‎Russell, William Howard (1820-1907).‎

‎MY DIARY. North and South.‎

‎pp. xxii, 602. Penciled ownership of Richard Lee (?). Large 12mo. Early quarter leather over marbled boards binding. Spine and extremities very worn with loss. Hardbound. The author was acting as war correspondent for the London Times. Ref: Howes 540; Sabin 74402. We do wonder who this early owner was - Richard Lee! "When the early secessionist threats were made by American southerners, William Howard Russell, a British journalist of international repute, was sent to the United States as a correspondent for the London Times. Besides dispatching letters to the Times, he kept a detailed personal diary in which he described the people he encountered, the social and cultural milieu, and the political confrontations. This new edition of Russells journal consists of selections from the complete Diary, which was originally published in 1863. Arriving in New York in March 1861, Russell traveled extensively through North and South, visiting both rural and urban areas, talking with both blacks and whites. Since Russells reports were known to sway public opinion, Union and Confederate officials, including Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis, were anxious to cooperate with him. Pleading immunity, Russell refused openly to favor either side, but did feel free to issue highly critical evaluations of people, events, and customs. The American public became increasingly wary of his reportage as nationalistic feeling deepened on both sides. After he published several unpopular commentaries, the American press generally lambasted Russell for snobbery and for enjoying undeserved privilege. By 1862, he was denied access to essential news sources at the front which thus concluded his mission as a war correspondent. Few people traveled as widely throughout the United States in 1861 as did Russell and no other journalist interviewed as many Union and Confederate leaders in so short a time. His balanced appraisal of social and political life at the advent of the Civil War provides a fascinating description of Americans as no American could have seen them. " - From a blurb about a 1987 edition of the Diary. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! SHELF W29‎

Sarah Tuke Grubb (1756-1790) was born at York, England and traveled throughout England, Ireland, Scotland, Germany and France as a minister of the Society of Friends. This account of her life and travel with extracts from her writings is extremely informative. Especially worthy of attention is her interest in Ackworth School (a Friends boarding school for girls) and her interest in Christian education generally. These particular accounts were addressed to a friend in America who was interested in founding similar institutions there. First published in Dublin in 1792. This Second Edition, served as a model for the first American edition (Trenton: 1795). **PRICE JUST REDUCED! PA 60 L Stk‎

This account of his Italian travels (1855-1857) in journal form was first published in 1859. Concentrating on Italian history and art, it covers: the Italian Riviera; Genoa; Florence; Rome; Naples; Etc. Norton also has some unkind things to say about the Roman Church and Papal Government. ‎THE DIARY OF AN ENNUYEE. From the Last London Edition.‎

‎341p. + Engraved portrait frontis. All edges gold. XLib. (24mo in 8's). Original full blue cloth binding embossed in gold and blind. Hardbound. Anna Brownell Jameson (1794-1860) was born in Dublin and after several moves with her family (including one stay above a bookseller) she settled in London. In 1820 or 1821, Anna was introduced to, and subsequently became engaged to a lawyer, Robert Jameson, the protege Basil Montagu, and a friend of Hartley Coleridge, Charles Lamb and Henry Crabbe Robinson. By June 1821, however, she had broken her engagement and had set off for Italy with the Rowles as a governess to their daughter, Laura. In 1825, she finally married Robert Jameson. Around the same time she wrote 'The Diary of an Ennuyee' which was originally published anonymously in 1826 and called 'A Lady's Diary'. The text was widely read as the actual travel biography of a young, heartbroken English lady traveling through Europe for the first time. The writer is suffering from an illness and a recurring melancholy that she often mentions and that often appears to impair her enjoyment of her travels. The last twenty pages of the text see the `writer' becoming increasingly ill and dying. Of course the book gained her a certain notoriety when it was revealed to be fictitious rather than strictly autobiographical. Curious little Civil War era edition. ** PRICE JUST REDUCED!! TRAVEL/2‎

He promoted doctrines that embroiled him in controversy that led to the first major schism within the Religious Society of Friends. . Hicks was one of the early abolitionists among the Friends. He spoke about slavery often and worked hard to persuade others to oppose it. His 'Observations on the Slavery of the Africans' (1811), which argued for a boycott of slavery-produced goods, represented one of the earliest social reform boycott efforts in the United States. The state of New York, due in part to Hicks's efforts, abolished slavery within its borders on July 4, 1827" - Wiki. PA SHELF 60 MIDSTK‎
