In 1922, a young Belgian ?pedologist' named Raymond Buyse accompanied the famous Dr. Ovide Decroly on a study tour of the United States of America. They met with well-known American professors to learn more about the ?scientific' study of the child and especially about applied American psychology. Buyse noted his impressions of the trip in a diary. These are scribbles, sometimes difficult to decipher, written on loose sheets, held together by a ring binder. They reflect the culture shock experienced by Buyse in confronting this dazzling nation. The young scholar writes in a lively style and with humour about his meetings with the ?great' psychologists and educationalists of that time, visualizing his impressions of the land and the people with little drawings in the text. Here the record of this fascinating scholarly and cultural encounter is published for the first time, both in the original French with an English translation. ‎Van de Woestijne was niet de ivoren torendichter waarvoor hij vaak versleten werd. Als correspondent in Brussel van de Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant (NRC) volgde hij van 1906 tot 1929 de politieke en culturele actualiteit in Belgie. Zijn verzameld journalistiek werk uit die krant beslaat vijftien delen (uitgegeven 1986-1995). Hoezeer zijn oeuvre verbonden was met zijn omgeving, blijkt vooral uit zijn proza. Afwisselend is het gesitueerd in de stad (Gent, Brussel, Oostende) of op het platteland, vooral Sint-Martens-Latem waar hij woonde van april 1900 tot februari 1904 en nog eens van mei 1905 tot oktober 1906. Een aantal gedichten uit de bundels De boom-gaard der vogelen en der vruchten (1905) en De gulden schaduw (1910) bezingen het Leielandschap.‎

Inspiré de The Illustrated London News, l'hebdomadaire L'Illustration a été fondé par les journalistes Jean-Baptiste-Alexandre Paulin, Édouard Charton, le géographe Adolphe Joanne, l'éditeur Jean-Jacques Dubochet et le journaliste Jacques-Julien Dubochet, qui en devient rédacteur en chef et gérant. Son premier numéro paraît le 4 mars 1843. La rédaction est située rue Saint-Georges dans le 9e arrondissement de Paris et l'imprimerie à Saint-Mandé.
