Ernest Hart [Ernest Abraham Hart] (1835-1898), editor of the British Medical Journal, ophthalmic surgeon and collector of Japane
Ernest Hart medical journalist editor of the British Medical Journal and collector of Japanese art. Autogaph Letter Signed to A. M. Broadley describing the meetings by his club with reference to Tenniel Lister Du Maurier Sambourne and others
No date 1880s. On letterhead of 38 Wimpole Street W. London. See his entry in the Oxford DNB from which the scandalous Broadley is unaccountably absent. 2pp 12mo. On bifolium of grey paper. Tears to the second leaf not affecting signature have been unobtrusively repaired with archival tape and its blank reverse carries a thin remnant of the mount. One postage fold. Addressed to ‘My Dear Broadley’ and signed ‘Ernest Hart’. Having talked over Broadley’s ‘brilliant sketch’ no doubt written for Edmund Yates’s newspaper The World of which he was de facto editor with his wife they have agreed to ask him to ‘modify the impression that our society is exclusively medical or by adding to the sentence wh. speaks of Clarke Wells Lister &c. meeting at Wimpole St. the leading provincial medicos’ after words such as “these latter make the acquaintance perhaps of Tenniel . Du Maurier & Sambourne or of Leckie Seeley & Ray Lankester†whom I grasp as representing the amusing & the serious sides of art & literature’. He concludes: ‘As a matter of fact we rarely ever have more than 1/3. doctors or of any one set at a dinner.’ Broadley was a renowned autograph collector as well as " barrister author company promoter and social figure. He is best known for being the defence lawyer for Ahmed 'Urabi after the failure of the 'Urabi Revolt." Wikipedia No date [1880s?]. On letterhead of 38 Wimpole Street, W. [London] unknown

Anonymous ( manuscript diary )
ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN DIARY OF SOUTHAMPTON PORT ENGLAND DOCKMASTER 1869-1873
Single volume. Sm.4to. 287p. no blanks marbled boards with leather spine. Entirely manuscript. Title of first page: "Diary Commencing Sunday Oct 3 1869 at Colombo Ceylon". Diary ends April 13 1873. First 38 pages are very interesting as the diarist describes in fine detail- with frequent touches of dry humor - his adventures as he travels on the Simla Steamship from Colombo through the Suez Canal back to London. He mentions that he has taken this trip before. The rest of the diary is written in England apparently in Southampton and most all entries follow a pattern of first describing the day's weather and then listing ships going in or out their passengers and/or their cargo usually coal slate or peat. A few personal notes are given but not often. On his way up to the Suez Canal the Simla stops to pick up coal. Diarist writes: "Aden is very rocky with a dry scorched burnt appearance little or no soil & no vegetation.hot & the glare of the sun exceedingly effecting to the eye." He goes inland to a settlement where he finds "half a dozen of the Simla passengers surrounded by almost two dozen of native trading Jews particularly anxious to pass their wares ostrich eggs and feathers.the din and noise they made baffles description drowning our voices so that we could not hear each other speak. After a quarter of an hour spent in the noisy battling with our salesmen I became the purchaser of some ostrich feather white and gray." Later in trip the ship's Lieut. Col. Lacy "died suddenly after a few hours illness of heat apoplexy". The next day the ship's chaplain refuses to assist at the funeral services as he believed Lacy brought on his own death by drinking too much. Typical entries once back in London: "January 9 1872 . Light airs and colam. Reaper sailed at morn.light breeze from NE with rain second case of diptheria reported in Island at Windbreck. Dr. Logic came here on sunday ." "July 3 1872. Moderate light breeze.Boat off for first load of peats. Simson came in with cargo of slates." From the text is seem likely that the diarist worked either as the Dockmaster or employee of some sort at the Southhampton dock or as an employee of a shipping company located in that area. Some names mentioned in the diary: J. W. Heddle Capt. James Cromarty J. W. Laughton and his son John John Storach and Charles Henry Sparkes. Diarist does say his brother-in-law was Samuel L. Louttie who died unexpectedly on October 22 1869. Another interesting note is that diarist mentions that "The Bank" began July 15 1872. Neat and legible. Diary is in near VG condition with no spotting or tears but some light cover wear. Pictures available on request. . hardcover

The Wall Street Journal
A HISTORY OF ORGANIZED FELONY AND FOLLY: The Record of Union Labor in Crime and Economics
1923. 104 pp. brown cloth spine w/ gray boards black lettering & framing; Book shows light wear to ends of spine w/ bumping & a little wear to corners of boards esp. bottom; darkening & some foxing to edges of page block w/ some light foxing to endnapers; prev. owner's gift note to front endpaper / The inscription to the book's front endpaper reads "With luck to Brother Fortman Wm. E. Reddin." There is in fact a William E. Reddin mentioned on page 71 as part of the section entitled "Canonization of Crime" in a list of officers and members of the Bridge & Structural Iron Workers Union "convicted of conspiracy in connection with more than 100 outrages committed over a period of five or six years." It reads: "William E. Reddin financial secretary and business agent Local No. 8 Milwaukee Wis.: Original sentence three years; released on bond; refused pardon by President and ordered back to Leavenworth by Circuit Court of Appeals." A reference to Reddin in old court documents I found available online seems to indicate that his offences related to bombings or "dynamiting" as it was referred to at the time. I have made a few small corrections in parentheses to words that seemed misspelled due to problems in OCR scanning: "CRIMINAL LAW § 242 FEDERAL OFFENSESREMOVAL ron TRIAL. I An indictment charging formation of a conspiracy December 1 1906. A to violate federal laws by shipping dynamite or nitroglycerine in inter·state commerce and continuous carrying on of the conspiracy until filing of the indictment specific shipments made in 1910 and 1011 being set forth showing times trains and places of shipment and destination is sufficient to warrant removal of accused as co-conspirators though they did not enter the conspiracy December 1 1906. Ed. Note.-For other cases see Criminal Law Cent. Dig. §§ 500 510; Dec. Dig. § 242. Application by the United States for a warrant to remove William E. Reddin and another to another state for trial. Application granted. Guy D. Goff U. S. Atty." Here is a snippet from an old newspaper: ". . . Dynamiting Gang of Iron Workers Union is Refused Review of Conviction by US . . . Paul J Morrin William E Reddin Michael J Cunnane Michael J Hannan Murray . . ." I'm speculating that Reddin may have been amused or flattered in some way that this obviously anti-union book had referenced him and for that reason signed copies at least one to friends and associates. I also found this from the "History of Ironworkers Local 8" by J. Jamakaya: ". . . federal indictments for conspiracy and transportation of explosives were issued against 42 ironworker leaders at both the International and local levels. One of those charged was Local 8 Business Manager Bill Reddin . . . Members of Local 8 now rallied around their own leader Bill Reddin. He was tried in federal court in Indianapolis found guilty and sentenced to three years in prison. An appeal was denied and he ultimately served two years and three months at Leavenworth prison. But members of Local 8 were convinced of Reddin's integrity. Just weeks before his trial they presented him with a gold watch and chain as a token of their 'esteem and confidence.' Upon his return to Milwaukee in 1916 he was greeted by a crowd of union supporters and Local 8 and the Building Trades Council held a public reception to celebrate. Reddin was immediately re-elected to office and served as Business Manager of Local 8 until his death in 1933." / . Inscribed. Hard Cover. Good /No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Hardcover

Sclater 1829-1913 a co-founder and editor of Ibis was a well-known and highly productive over 1400 publications ornithologist by trade. He is also remembered for his 1858 paper setting out the faunal regions classification of zoogeography later adopted by Alfred Russel Wallace. He was also secretary of the Zoological Society of London a member of more than forty professional societies at home and abroad and a council member of the Royal Society of London. Assisting him as co-editor of some of the issues was Howard Saunders or A.H. Evans until 1931 when C.B. Ticehurst took over as editor.
Now subtitled the International Journal of Avian Science it is in its present form a peer-reviewed scientific journal which covers ecology conservation behavior palaeontology and taxonomy of birds. For it’s first nearly one hundred years however the journal focused on a more popularistic type of article often introducing species and images to the public for the first time.

A group of friends mostly wealthy collectors of bird specimens founded the British Ornithologists' Union in 1858 with the primary intent of starting an ornithological journal. The first volume of the journal The Ibis appeared in 1859. Lists of species observed by traveling ornithologists and long catalogues of specimens obtained on expeditions filled the journal. “This random fact gathering on distribution persisted unchanged from 1859 to the 1940s.†In her article entitled “The Ibis: Transformations in a Twentieth Century British Natural History Journal†in Journal of the History of Biology October 2004 Volume 37 No. 3 pp. 515–555 Kristin Johnson points out in a much more complete and professional manner the difference between “popular†ornithology and “scientific†ornithology study of the living bird in its natural environment more on a biological aspect the transition of which occurred post-1940. Meanwhile the articles appearing in the Ibis were geared more toward the popularization of the science and the spread of knowledge of geographic distribution and the habits and patterns of the various bird species. John van Voorst (1883-1886); Gurney and Jackson (1887-1903); R.H. Porter (1904-1913); British Ornithologists’ Union (1914-1932 unknown

Ahora Periodico Illustrado [CHURCHILL, Winston] [ROOSEVELT, President Franklin D].
Atlantic Charter Version grafica de la Historica Entrevista realizada entre el Presidente de Estados Unidos Mr Franklin D. Roosevelt y el Primer Ministro de Gran Bretana Mr Winston Churchill. Agosto de 1941.

Buenos Aries Ahora Periodico Illustrado. 1941. Oblong. 210x278mm. 32 leaves with 31 black and white photographs pasted in. Each photograph has printed captions text in Spanish pasted onto the bottom edge. The first leaf has the title details printed on white paper pasted in. Each photograph has a glassine protective sheet. Contemporary string bound album covered in maroon cloth and stamped with the name of the owner "Mervyn F. Ryan" on the upper cover with "Ahora Periodico Illustrado" stamped at bottom right corner. Some slight rubbing to extremities and wear to corners but otherwise very good and in excellent condition internally with the photographs especially well preserved. This album or anything like seems to be unrecorded and we have found nothing similar in the auction records. This fascinating collection of is a rare photographic record of the signing of the Atlantic Charter by Roosevelt and Churchill. It was produced by the Argentinian illustrated periodical Ahora. This was a news magazine and these photographs are enlarged versions printed on good quality gloss photographic paper of the pictures used in a series of issues of the magazine between 22nd August and 5th September 1941. There is little staged about these images and they have the immediacy of a true journalistic record. Unsurprisingly Roosevelt and Churchill feature heavily – they were the two big beasts Churchill holding the line in Europe and Roosevelt playing a very delicate domestic game with American public opinion – but there is a strong sense of the broader picture with lots of other figures contributing to the bustle and urgency of a major diplomatic conference. The Atlantic Conference took place between 9th-12th August 1941 at the US Naval Base Argentia in Newfoundland and the declaration issued as a statement rather than as a written document was made on 14th August. Although it was in a sense merely one of a number of similar declarations and agreements made that year the Anglo-Soviet Agreement – Evelyn Waugh's "day of apocalypse for all the world" - had been signed the previous month the Atlantic Charter the name was coined by a British newspaper and it stuck had a greater immediate impact and has had a longer lasting effect. Arguably it led to Pearl Harbour the Japanese interpreting it as an act of aggression; its call for national self-determination set the ball of decolonization rolling; and it laid the foundations for NATO and the United Nations. A new world order was emerging. The recipient of this album given to him we assume by Ahora magazine was Mervyn Ryan an engineer who worked in railways in America Britain India and Argentina. He was in Argentina for most of his working life latterly advising the Argentine government on the management of the previously British-owned railways. With fingers in lots of pies and a prominent member of the British community in Buenos Aries the editors of Ahora no doubt thought that Ryan was the right audience for this specially produced record of a major political event.
[Buenos Aries] Ahora Periodico Illustrado. hardcover
