Giovanni Valeri fu professore di diritto criminale nell'università di Siena. Nacque a Grosseto nel 1775. Nel 1814 fu eletto professore di criminale diritto nella università di Siena, nel 1823 cominciò a scrivere nell'Antologia giornale fondato da Giovan Pietro Viesseux. La sua salma fu seppellita dentro il duomo di Grosseto.

Lacking binding. Purports to be the confession of the Countess of Guernsey 1753-1821 who takes the blame for the scandalously poor relationship between Queen Caroline and King George IV. Variously attributed to: Lady Anne Hamilton 1766-1846; Olivia Serres aka Princess Alive of Cumberland 1772-1834; Hamilton and Serres together; and Shakespeare forger William Henry Ireland 1777-1835. Whoever the author was it inspired Edgar Allen Poe's "The Purloined Letter." Scarce. In Fair Condition: lacking lower part of title page with loss of imprint except for th "L" from London and lacking upper corner without loss of text; closed 7-cm. tear in title page; pages are brown and slightly stained; complete. s.n. unknown

There is a name etc written on inside front cover not well blotted with resultant transfer to fep; there are losses to the top and bottom of front pastedown which may be past insect activity. The back pastedown is firmly intact. There is some tanning or discoloration to inside covers and endpapers. The bottom tips of the last two pages are curled. The extreme popularity of Hungarian statesman Lajos Kossuth de Udvard et Kossuthfalva 1802-1894 or Louis Kossuth as he was known in English is indicated by the publisher naming this literary annual for him. He had served as Hungary's president during the revolution of 1848-49; in 1851 he spent time in London before coming to the United States. He arrived in New York in Dec. 1851 as this volume appeared to a hero's welcome including a visit to the White House with President Millard Fillmore. The volume includes: 5 plates engraved by John Sartain; 2 works by Metta Victoria Fuller 1831-1885: The City of Night and The Wo-Prophet of Jerusalem; an engraving of the Crystal Palace; The Fear of Being an Old Maid by Mrs. E. H. Hall; and a biography of Kossuth. Very scarce. In Good- Condition: edges of spine and corners are rubbed; loss at ends of spine; cloth is separating along front joint; cloth is soiled and faded; front hinge is separating; old dampstain at lower corner of a few leaves; foxing throughout; otherwise clean and solid.
