‎Elisabetta. Per sempre regina. La vita, il regno, i segreti‎

‎ril.

‎CAPT LOUIS MCKEEHAN‎

‎1941 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF A CRITICALLY TIMED TRIP TO WAR TORN ENGLAND BY AN AMERICAN PHYSICIST WHOSE DETERMINATION AND OUTSIDE-THE-BOX THINKING WILL PERFECT THE ART OF TORPEDO WARFARE‎

‎LONDON ENGLAND GREAT BRITAIN UK 1941. On offer is a super very interesting historic original World War II manuscript diary handwritten by American physicist Capt. Louis McKeehan 1887-1975 head of the Mine Warfare Branch of the Bureau of Ordnance Director of the Physics Laboratories Yale among other noted positions. The diary is comprised of 37 pages of entries originally in a smallish flip style notebook now mounted four to a page on paper. The diary is a significant record beginning March 10 1941 through to May 25 1941 detailing his hazardous travels to England and a record of his important meetings and appointments and contacts with each diary page filled with many dozens of Government Military and Admiralty personnel not to mention the vast number of doctors and scientists he met with too. Each 5 x 2¾ note page is filled with data meticulously written as befits a scientist of his calibre. Historians and researchers will understand that this trip is many months before America would enter the War and there was controversy that America should have any involvement while clandestine efforts to assist England were on going. In fact the Lend Lease Act would be passed in Congress the very next day the Captain's trip starts. It is also to be noted this trip occurs at a desperate time for the British. Setbacks in Italy Greece and the terror of the air bombing campaign were all part of the backdrop to this narrative. BIO NOTES: McKeehan's life makes for a fascinating story of a dedicated 'outside the box thinker'. He took leave of his teaching position to help out with the war effort. He was the driving force behind the creation of the torpedo called Fido. Scientists at the Naval Torpedo Station at Newport Rhode Island had been considering acoustic homing torpedoes for fifteen years but insisted that torpedoes made too much noise themselves to be able to home on any external noise source and until McKeehan came along to challenge them they seemed to have a point. But McKeehan was not a career naval officer. He was a reserve officer on active duty for the duration whose peacetime job was director of the physics laboratories at Yale University. Unimpressed by the received wisdom of Navy engineers McKeehan turned to HUSL and BTL where his idea for an acoustic homing torpedo quickly bore fruit. With support and funding from the NDRC HUSL and BTL proved Newport wrong and only seventeen months after the beginning of the project Fido had entered service and made his first kill. After the war the scientists at Bell Labs who had worked on Fido returned to telephone work Captain McKeehan returned to Yale and Harvard - like some other universities - anxious to shed the military connection as soon as possible took back its buildings and ended its classified work. BIO NOTES: Louis McKeehan was among other things author of Yale Science: The First Hundred Years 1701-1801 New York: H. Schuman 1947. . Good. 32mo - over 4" - 5" tall. Manuscript. unknown‎

‎Captain Albert Henry Burwell and Captain Henry Borland Tasker‎

‎1882-1884 Captain’s Log for the First 17 Voyages of the British Warren Line’s Steamship Kansas Which Sailed between Liverpool and Boston‎

‎AT SEA Liverpool Boston New Brunswick. Very Good. Hardcover. On offer is the handwritten ship’s log for the first 17 voyages of the Scottish-built British-owned SS Kansas owned by the passenger steamship line George Warren & Company now the Warren Line in Liverpool. The log book contains the Captain’s handwritten log for the first 17 voyages of the SS Kansas occurring between May 1882 and April 1884. The SS Kansas sailed between Liverpool and Boston sometimes stopping in New Brunswick. It was built by Charles Connell & Company Glasgow Scotland. Its engine was built by John and James Thomson also of Glasgow. Historical records show that the SS Kansas was launched on January 19 1882 and set sail on its first voyage between Liverpool and Boston on May 21 1882. The log shows that the maiden voyage sailed with 100 passengers from Liverpool to Boston from Boston to St. John New Brunswick and then back to Liverpool arriving on July 4 1882. The SS Kansas’ inaugural captain was Albert Henry A. H. Burwell 1833-1882. Burwell was a Boston native who died of Rheumatic Fever while at sea on September 9 1882 during the third voyage of the SS Kansas. His death is recorded in a handwritten “In Memoriam” sic box at the bottom of the Remarks page. Burwell’s first mate Henry Borland Harry Tasker 1846-1889. Tasker was a native of Liverpool married to Mary Ellen Simcock Tasker 1847-1917 whose obituary was found tipped-in to the ship’s log. SEE BIO NOTES FOR MORE ON CAPTAINS BURWELL AND TASKER. For each of the 17 voyages the captain records their name the locations between which they are sailing daily coordinates course winds and remarks regarding the weather and other details and details on each voyage’s coal consumption revolutions and distance. This is a fascinating look into the daily record keeping of 19th century mariners and provides insight into the capabilities of the SS Kansas and the daily struggles encountered by 19th century commercial sailors. It may also be of interest to genealogists who are piecing together timelines for those who sailed aboard the SS Kansas. The book contains approximately 70 pages with writing front and back on about 85% of the pages. It appears a number of pages were ripped out of the back of the book though it does not appear voyages were tracked beyond the 17th. The book itself measures approximately 7.5x4.5 inches. The seams are extremely loose and many pages are detached. Strangely the first page of the records for the SS Kansas’ maiden voyage is out of order and is connected to the first page of the documentation for the 3rd voyage. The pages are all present and only that one appears to be out of order. The hard covers spine and binding are in poor condition though the book is intact. The handwriting is very legible and the pages are all intact aside from those missing at the back. Overall Fair to Poor. BIO NOTES: Albert Henry Burwell 1833-1882 was either born in Boston Massachusetts or was born at sea on a whaler depending on which source you read to Master Mariner Albert Augustus Burwell and Sarah Ellis Hyde. He was raised in Boston Massachusetts where he attended Worcester Academy before becoming a sailor. He visited England and married Elizabeth Rea in 1858. Rhea was the daughter of Captain Gray dockmaster of the Waterloo docks in Liverpool. Burwell captained the ships Autocrat and Sarah Hignett and later became the Commodore of the Warren Line steamships which sailed between Boston and Liverpool. He captained the steamships Minnesota Missouri Iowa and the Kanas where he died of rheumatic fever on a voyage from Liverpool to Boston. He was a member of the Boston Marine Society. Henry Borland Harry Tasker 1846-1889 was born in Liverpool Merseyside England to parents Henry Taker and Anne Elizabeth Goddard. He married Mary Ellen Simcock Tasker 1847-1917 on June 24 1869 in Lancaster. He was a member of the British merchant marine and later captained ships including the SS Minnesota and SS Kansas both of the Warren Line. During an 1879 crossing while he was captain of the SS Minnesota Tasker saved the passengers and crew aboard the shipwrecked vessel “Royal Arch”. He was awarded a certificate and medal by the Shipwreck and Humane society. Henry and his family moved to America in 1887 and lived in Kansas to work with the Southern Kansas railroad offices. Henry died of stomach cancer only two years later in Topeka.; Manuscripts; Thin 16mo 6" - 7" tall; Signed by Author . hardcover‎

‎CAPTAIN ANGUS RICHARDS‎

‎1901 - 1902 ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN LOG BOOK OF THE MANY TRIPS OF THE SCHOONER ‘KIPLING’ FROM NOVA SCOTIA TO BRAZIL AND THE CARIBBEAN PROVIDING AN EXCELLENT LOOK AT EARLY 20TH CENTURY AMERICAN SAILING COMMERCE‎

‎HALIFAX NOVA SCOTIA to BRAZIL & CARIBBEAN. Good. 1901. On offer is a curious and original manuscript relic of ocean going commerce being the log book of an ill fated vessel called the Schooner "Kipling" whose commander Captain Angus Richards details a journey from Halifax to Pernambuco Brazil in 1901-1902. The 175 page or so handwritten log is in many ways typical of sea faring logs kept since the age of sail. There are included within the pages a detailed weather conditions ship position cargo information stray observations and condition reports. The log begins “From La Have towards Halifax” on the 27th of February 1901. Next the ship is in the Port of Halifax on April 18. The entries while the ship are at port are the most expositional focusing mostly on observations and not the precise calculations of the ship’s navigation. From Halifax the schooner travels toward Pernambuco then Barbados on May 4 arriving there on May 16 returning to Halifax on June 7 continuing from there to LeHave and Liverpool where they took on a load of lumber bound for the island of Antigua. They arrive in Antigua July 26 proceeding to Barbados reaching there on August 8. From there they go on to Puerto Rico and ports of Humacao and Fajardo picking up a load of molasses. From Fajardo they set sail for St. John New Brunswick on August 27. Other ports of call include Boston with final entries dated November 22nd dropping anchor in Getson's Cove in Lunenburg County Nova Scotia and getting ready to go out again to sea however where the ship is going is unwritten. The Schooner “Kipling” would eventually sink off the coast of Maine in January 1906 and all seven members of the ship miraculously survived. The story is quite interesting for anyone interested. The log book is 13 1/4” x 8 1/4 inches. It’s a bit worn its edges but generally in pretty good condition. The front cover reads “Ship - Kipling; Captain - Angus Richards; From - Halifax; To - Pernambuco.” The hardcover is covered in marbled paper with a leather spine and sold by “Creighton & Marshall 64 Upper Water Street near the Ordinance Halifax NS.” The handwriting is very legible throughout in black ink that has not faded or smudged. TEXT: “Wednesday 28th Feb. 1901. ‎CAPTAIN CHARLES SANDERSON‎

‎1919 ORIGINAL SUPERB DIARY OF THE LAST YEAR OF WORLD WAR 1 HANDWRITTEN BY THE ACTING CAPTAIN OF A MACHINE GUN CORPS COMPANY FIGHTING AND LIVING THROUGH THE LAST GASPS OF THE GERMAN ARMY IN NORTHERN FRANCE AND BELIGUM‎

‎NORD FRANCE FLANDERS YPRES LYS BELIGUM. Good. 1918. On offer is the exemplary and fascinating wartime diary of Lieutenant Charles Sanderson of the Machine Gun Corps of the British Army. The diary covers the entire year of 1918 the last of World War 1. Kept against orders it is very rare to find such a detailed diary outside the archives of the Imperial War Museum or regimental collections. Sanderson notes all the place names and identifies brigades so that it is possible to follow in detail the final stages of the war. In the beginning of the diary Sanderson is in Amiens France. "Wednesday January 1918. Went into Amiens by Lorry from D.H.Q. Arrived at 9.00am. Bought Christmas Dinner for Company. Stayed all night at the Hotel de L'Univers. Coy. relieved in line by 7th Coy." The diary entries are most often short and concise matter-of-fact jottings on what was done by his company that day and the movements of other companies and officers: "Received orders for Coy. to go into line tomorrow. Won 35 fr. at Bridge."; "Rode toward Bgde. 195 Coy. in morning to 200 Coy. A.S.C. in afternoon. Went to Benatre at night to fetch in broken down G.S. wagon belonging to Bgde. H.Q."; "Rest of Br. Transport turned up in late morning. Nothing doing all day."; "Marches from Bois de Courton at 4.00 am and arrive at Germaine about 9.0 am. Entrains at 5.30 pm and detrains at Fere en Champenois at 9.30 pm. Went in lorries to Bn. at Corroy." There are also numerous entries of the fighting around him and his company. "Heavy bombing again at night. Bombs all round us but nothing hit at all in our Brigade."; "Aeroplanes about again but no bombs dropped near us."; "Badly bombed at night. 199 Coy. A.S.C. lost all their horses." In March Sanderson has leave for two weeks. He travels back to London to be with his family. "March 1. Arrived Boulogne about 6.15am. Had breakfast at E.F.C. embarked 8.30 am. Rough passage. Arrived London 2.30 pm. Went to palladium at night with Uncle Laura."; "March 9. Played golf with Dad Upjohn and T. Roman. Went to Upjohn's afterwards to play cards"; "March 15. Crossed to france in afternoon and stayed the night at the Cafe de la Pork." He is back with his company by the 17th. His company then moves onto Bucquoy France then Bonneville then Armentieres in Flanders. Here they see combat. "April 8. Attack south of Armentieres began. Part of 74th Coy. went up at night. Rode over to Free's Cashier at Ravesburg in morning." This is the beginning of the "Battle of the Lys" also known as the Lys Offensive the Fourth Battle of Ypres the Fourth Battle of Flanders and Operation Georgette which would last from April 7 to the 29th. The month of April is filled with entries about this battle. "April 10. Still at Ravelsburg but expect to move at any time. Took ammunation up to Petite Monque Farm at night."; April 14. Moved from field near Berthen to Boechepe - Abelle Road. Mess in at Boechepe. Took rations up to Dranoutre but could ot find men."; "April 22. Walked over to R. E. Park and to 199 Coy. A.S.C. in afternoon. Played bridge in evening with Dr. and Aycock and won 5 fr."; April 26. Attacked in morning & retook Kemmel Hill. Had to come back on French did not move." April 30. Heavy bombardment during day but no infantry attacked." After the Battle Sanderson takes leave in Paris: "May 17. Still in Paris having a hell of a time. Bolam & Markielle returned in evening. Went to Casino de Paris but had to leave early as there was air raid warning." After Paris he returns to his company and the trials and tribulations of war return: "May 27. Bosche attack started at 10 am. Drove us back. Moved transport back to Bourancourt and then to Lonchery Roady & then to Grevy. Out all night. Looking for Br. H.Q. and rations." Boche is a French slang word for 'rascal' first applied to German soldiers during World War One "June 16. Italians came to reconnaitre line to relieve us tomorrow night night. Major Courtaullo came up to take Command of Coy." Much of the diary follows this pattern. There are long days of his company's movement going to where they are needed and there are days where attacks and battles are witnessed and fought. In between all the moving and fighting Sanderson has his leaves from the military. These passages are much more detailed and jubilant than all the others for obvious reason. Whether in line or on leave Sanderson is quite the gambler and many passages end with him playing poker and winning or losing money. As the war nears its end there are still occasional entries of battle. In the end of October and the early part of November the last weeks of the War Sanderson sees heavy fighting in Northern France and Beligum. "October 16. Did attack with 55th Div. not a big success and had lot of casualties. Stayed with S.A. Bgde. in tavern W. on Montay."; "October 17. Still in same place with guns gradually pushing forward."; October 23. Operated with 7th 75th Bgds. in attack east of Le Calean. Took L'Eveque Wood. Moved from Quenette Farm to Pommereuil in morning living with combined Bgde. H.Q."; "November 4. Started fresh attack from neighbourhood of Fontaine au Bois. All going well. Went up to take over 'C' Coy. after Lime was wounded. Move in evening from Le Fause.; "November 6. Advanced again with guns moving behind advanced guard. Moved up with 7th Bgde. in evening to Faisniere. Put 8 guns in outpost line in evening Rept. 8 in reserve in Dompiere." The war ends on November 11: "November 11. 'Cease Fire' went at 11.00 am. So nothing more done except 'Celebration.'' The rest of the diary is comprised of pretty short entries: of parades church salvage duty and other post-war activities. On December 31st he writes: "Very wet all day & nothing doing. Months leave approved by XIII Corps. Made money in the evening at bridge." After the diary entries there are a number of detailed pages of 'Cash Accounts" that show all the money Recieved from and Paid to throughout the year. The book is roughly 100 pages long with almost every single entry on every page written in. There is a green cloth cover and structurally the book is in very good shape. Sanderson writes in pen with no smudge marks and his handwriting is very easy to read. Included as well is thin blue "Army Book 439" which was issued to every combatant officer below the rank of Lieutannt-Colonel. It has much personal and military information of Sanderson including army courses taken service record promotions received 1st Lieutenant - June 1st 1917; Captain - May 29 1918 and an employment form for when discharged from the Machine Gun Corps. The book is also in very good condition and is 12 pages long.; Manuscript; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF CAPTAIN CHARLES SANDERSON ACTING CAPTAIN LAST YEAR OF WW1 WORLD WAR ONE MACHINE GUN CORPS BRITISH M.G.C. ‎CAPTAIN CHARLES EDWIN GOOD‎

‎LATE 1880s EARLY 1890s ORIGINAL SCRAPBOOK OF OVER 400 ILLUSTRATIONS CUT OUTS AND PHOTOGRAPHS ALL PERTAINING TO THE AUTHOR’S DEEP AND WILDLY PASSIONATE ‘MARRIAGE’ TO ALL ‘THINGS PERTAINING TO THE OCEAN’‎

‎BOSTON MASSACHUSETTS MA. Good. 1890. On offer is a rare and one-of-a-kind love song of sorts a scrapbook of the people places and vessels that make up the allure of the sea and the life of a steamboat Captain. The book is question is a fantastic scrapbook featuring roughly 400 illustrations spread out of over 145 pages. There are also hundreds of clippings from newspapers magazines and books and over 20 photographs pasted onto thick paper. The owner of the book and creator of this wholly unique book is the Steamboat Captain Charles Edwin Good captain of the steamer ‘Rose Standish’. Charles E. Good was a steamboat Captain for the Boston & Hingham Steamboat Company and the ‘Rose Standish’ was a passenger steamer that carried passengers between Boston Hull and Hingham Massachusetts. The frontispiece shows a sepia-toned photograph of the steamer in question the ‘Rose Standish’ along with a name is all capital letters “C. E. GOOD”. The title page states him as “Married to things pertaining to the ocean”. What he is married to are all the illustrations photographs and clippings that make up this extraordinary book: various cultures and people; exotic places; shipwrecks and petulant weather; deserted isles; ports of call around the world; steamers sloops-of-war ferries ironclads frigates and all manners of sailing vessel; naval battles contemporary and classic; canals docks and harbors; rivers and oceans; Leviathans and other sea monsters; and so much more relating to the sea and all that comes with it. This is truly a scrapbook created by a man who loves the ocean and the sea and the extraordinary range of human activities that come with the sailing life. Near the end of the book come the photographs black and white and split evenly between photographs of beautiful masted sailing vessels and of shorelines and harbors and Capes. The photographer’s name is visible on one of the photographs: Charles L. Hovey. The author photographs have no name attributed to them but the style of the photographs is so similar it would seem most likely that they are Hovey’s work as well. The illustrations and such date from the late 1880s to the early 1890s so it is likely that this was scrapbook was put together after Charles Good had retired from the Boston & Hingham Steamboat Company and the sailing life. He would die in 1894. The front cover also has the name of his son Charles Morse Good and the date 1896 possibly when he inherited the book from the estate of his recently deceased father. There is also written in pencil provenancial information stating the book was purchased in 1973 from the author Elizabeth Coatsworth Beston and written by a man named John P. Richardson. This is a brilliant and exceptionally unique scrapbook of one man’s lifelong love to the sailing the ocean. It is a treasure that deserves to be cherished and preserved. The book is 7 ½ x 9 ¾ inches in hardcover. There are worn marbled boards with what is left of leather corners and spine and the spine’s entire leather backstrip’s gone. The binding is still tight however. There are about 3 or 4 pages that have detached from the binding. There is light to moderate foxing on some of the photograph plates but overall the pages are still in good condition. background: Charles Edwin Good was born at Hallowell Maine Oct. 4 1836; married in Hingham Elizabeth J. Easterbrook a daughter of shipmaster Samuel Easterbrook 1810-1883;; resided on Cottage Street. Good died on Aug. 27 1894 of consumption better known today as Tuberculosis. The steamer Rose Standish carried passengers between Boston Hull and Hingham about eleven miles down Boston Bay. She had a saloon on the upper deck. Built in 1863 at Brooklyn NY; was sunk by a collision with a tugboat in the Boston harbor on Aug. 28 1884; was raised and repaired. She seems to have lasted until at least 1920. After that I could find no more information on her. ‎CAPTAIN FRANCIS COGSWELL, USN‎

‎1919 - 1923 ORIGINAL POST WORLD WAR I MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY MUCH NOTED AND DECORATED COMMANDER OF THE USS CHANDLER AND HUSBAND OF AN AMERICAN SPY‎

‎USS MCDOUGAL USS CHANDLER. Good. 1919. On offer is the original post-World War I era manuscript 5-year diary of the much noted and decorated United States Navy Captain Francis Cogswell Commander of the USS McDOUGAL in the early part of the narrative and then on September 25 1919 he assumed command of the USS CHANDLER. He remained Commander of the USS Chandler until November 28 1922. Then in 1923 the last year of these diaries he and his wife bought a house in Dehlgreen VA. A detailed biography follows. It should also be noted that he was married to Foreign Service Agent and CIA operative Grace Phillips Cogswell whose diaries we list separately. In his entries he writes with incredible detail of his voyages and experiences while going around the American coast and docking in places like New York Boston Norwalk VA New Orleans LA Newport RI Key West FL etc. But most of his time was spent on voyages abroad to destinations such as Hong Kong Singapore Venice Italy Constantinople Egypt Cairo Bombay Paris England Saigon Scotland Manila and others. Further writings range from the mundane to shocking details of his life in command of hundreds of men. One reads of mechanical problems and incidents that occur damage to the ship places they anchor radio messages from other ships that he intercepts including a ship whose frame broke and was being flooded a report of a huge iceberg crew inspections having "full dressed ship" for the birthday of the crown prince of Italy locations where the crew gets liberty and the trouble they get into while on shore gambling fights robbing people forcing themselves into a women's bathing place shooting an English woman in her foot while at the beach etc what he does when he takes leave and goes ashore the gambling he does exploring an old Spanish fort going to see Roman ruins and the pyramids in Cairo seeing trenches and tanks in Paris important people he spends time with and those he dines with etc often going on board other ships to dine with other Captains and Admirals having tea at Mrs. Fletchers in Venice whom he notes was a "horrible artist" seeing sharks a large 60 foot whale that comes along side the ship that a crew member shoots at with a rifle which he writes did not seem to disturb the whale much the USS Green having a boiler accident that kills two men the crew having parties a French girl who tries to drown herself. Having "man overboard drills" firing "exercise torpedoes" and one circles and hits their ship diving to retrieve torpedoes crew members shooting each other "accidently" marrying a couple in Peking attending many parties a crew member getting killed by lightning a crew member trying to commit suicide and almost dying by cutting his wrist. Receiving "Legion of Honor" and attending other medal ceremonies attending a majors wedding flying ships flag half mast colors for two men killed in storeroom on USS Huron eleven crew members jumping ship Captain Curtis requesting that the men refrain from urinating on his naval base. Having seven Christmas trees decorated for the crew members and the gifts that he receives including a silver coffee set and a gold cigarette case his recollections of being shipwrecked in the pacific. He writes of taking on board 32 Russian refugees and his fear that the rough seas would cause a woman to have her child. He writes: "They are disinfecting Russians from Eastern Victor. Szecin & __ French stood in with 5000 Rushies. Typhus on first one. Conditions horrible. Much yap about quarantine. No food. - Red Cross arrived. Thank god!" "One case of small pox on S.S. Siam in __ with 460 including a 5 day old baby that hasn't been washed or had any milk yet only sugar and water." Francis Cogswell also spends a lot time with Captain Hellweg. In one entry he tells how Captain Hellweg while abroad was taking an auto ride with a woman and killed a small boy. And he writes of the death of crew member "Skinner" after falling into coma. An inquest was held after an autopsy could not determine the cause of his death. He was the son of Major Geo. C. Skinner of St. Louis MO. Then there's the surprising entries in which he tells of Lt. Harris catching Lt. Sullivan committing sodomy with Callard in the emergency cabin. They dock in New Orleans a couple of days later with them as "prisoners" but the Naval Station refuses to take prisoners. Two days later Sullivan "sawed off his irons" during the night and escaped! Collectors and researchers of naval and marine history and life will be hard pressed to find a more interesting World War I era diary. BIOGRAPHY: CAPTAIN FRANCIS COGSWELL U.S.N. was the son of Rear Admiral James Kelsey Cogswell U.S.N. a Spanish - American war hero. He was born at Portsmouth New Hampshire August 19 1887. ‎CAPTAIN GEORGE SYLVESTER CHASE‎

‎1868 - 1872 ORIGINAL SHIP'S LOG AND CAPTAIN'S DIARY WHO LIVES A ROLLICKING SEA FARING LIFE BUT PINES FOR HIS CARRIE‎

‎New Bedford Massachusetts MA. Good. 1868. On offer is a sensational original post Civil War era 1868 - 1872 Captain's log book and journal handwritten by Massachusetts mariner George Sylvester Chase 1833-1877. Born and raised in the Cape Cod town of Yarmouth later to New Bedford his registration for the 1863 Civil War draft listed his occupation as a "mariner at sea whaling" with the 1870 census shows him "at sea" and living in New Bedford. Their family was well noted in Deyo's History of Barnstable County as his father was the noted Cape Cod Baptist minister Enoch E. Chase 1804-1887. Captain Chase at age 35 would have been considered an old salt by anyone's opinion who holds naval and maritime history in high regard and those reading this log would not be disappointed. There are shades of Forester and Conrad on nearly every page. His various ships included the "Volunteer" "Ericsson" and "Regent" and immediately from the first pages we encounter high drama on the seas: "my first officer.informed me that a boat was laying off the ship and when he hailed the boat the reply he received was go to hell.I told them not to come too near. They call me a few hard names and a damned Cape Cod man and fired six shots at the ship." Given this is during post war peace it comes as an eye opening entry. The 12.5" x 8.5" folio has 100 pages or so and besides Chase's trials and travails at sea he always has his heart in New Bedford often entries in the manner of a diary addressed to his wife "Carrie" whom he greatly misses. At one point he expresses hope she will join him on the next voyage so that he might reap the benefits of her "superior mind" while at sea. Other entries include the description of a fight aboard ship involving a crew member who drew a knife while threatening to kill everyone in sight a crew member who fell overboard in "very heavy seas.and it would have been impossible to have lowered a boat" etc. Entries adding much depth to this book include heartfelt verse much addressed to his wife or a cousin sometimes for himself as creative outlet on long sea voyages. A fair bit of the son of a Baptist preacher peeks out from the page throughout his writings. And of course as with any ship's book he records the typical data any sailor would note such as position weather and any and all nautical observations. The book has some cover wear and some pages are loose but all accounted for and legible. ‎CAPTAIN GPD PEASE, ROYAL MARINE G P D‎

‎1939 - 1940 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY DETAILING THE ONSET OF WORLD WAR II AND THE ROYAL NAVY'S RUSH TO ENGAGE THE ENEMY FROM THE UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE OF A CAPTAIN OF THE ROYAL MARINES‎

‎ABOARD THE HMS HERMES. Good. 1939. On offer is a sensational 1939 to 1940 manuscript relic of Britain's naval war with Germany at the immediate outset of World War II being an original diary handwritten by Captain G.P.D. Pease Royal Marine aboard the ill-fated HMS Hermes. The diary begins October 7th a mere month after the declarations of war between England and Germany 1939 with sporadic entries from October until mid-December and then another long entry in June of 1940 covering 19 folio sized 8" x 13" pages. Two later pages have damage as if glued pictures were removed with some small loss but not terrible. The ship arrives in Dakar French West Africa to cooperate with the French Navy in hunting German raiders which they then proceed to do. At one point he is invited to go up in an aircraft as an observer. Upon returning they slide across the deck and crash upside down in the sea below. He and the other two aboard were able to escape into a life raft and were rescued. He has a very long entry about this as well as a photo of them being rescued. The long June 1940 entry is interesting as it details the confusion as to what to do with the French Naval ships around them as they don't know what their allegiance is after the capitulation of the French government at that time and the establishment of the Vichy French government loyal to Germany. The Hermes was later sunk in action in 1942. Tucked in are two telegrams from the Admiralty announcing destruction of Graf Spee off Montevideo another regarding HMS Ajax ten Captain's remarks certificates all highly complimentary of his of his abilities dated 1940 - 1957 and his 1938 report card and successful passing to rank of Captain of the Royal Marines. Later he served on the HMS Superb St. Angelo and Implacable. Included are a few miscellaneous photos as well. ‎CAPTAIN H HERMAN‎

‎1840 ORIGINAL SIGNIFICANT MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF A BRITISH ARMY OFFICER'S WHO MAY VERY WELL HAVE BEEN A SPY TOUR OF ENGLAND'S OLD FOE AT A TIME OF CHAOS AND COOPERATION‎

‎BARCELONA MADRID SEVILLE SPAIN. Fair. 1840. On offer is an original historically significant and absolutely superb first-hand account of an army officer travelling in 1840s Europe. Was he a tourist or was he a spy His journal takes the form of a pocket notebook measuring 7.25 inches by 4.75 inches. There are 54 pages and they are 100% complete. The handwriting is copperplate. It is hard but not impossible to read. The journal's contents more than make up for its condition. The covers have separated from the book. The pages themselves have separated into their several sections but all are present. The pages are not numbered but there are dates entered in places in his narration. It is the contents though that captures the imagination. Captain H. Herman is a British Army officer. In 1840 he travels from the northeast to the southwest of Spain. Visiting major centres such as Barcelona Seville and Cadiz he paints a detailed picture of the countryside its inhabitants and the customs he encounters. As befits a military person he has a sharp eye for detail and his notes are accompanied by a number of finely-executed ink line drawings. He notes other officers that he meets regiments including one that we would refer to today as 'off-the books' and notable personages. These were tumultuous times in Spain. Ferdinand VII died without a male heir. Prior to his death he changed the succession laws to enable his young 3 years old daughter Isabella to assume the throne instead of his more reactionary brother Carlos. This set off the Carlist wars that raged for years. Isabella's mother ruled as regent and eventually she found a winning general - Baldemero Espartero to help her drive back the Carlists. The country already devastated by the Napoleonic Wars sank further into poverty and destitution. The British government supported Isabella in her endeavours and indeed assisted in raising a regiment for her. The British Legion was a force of 10000 British military volunteers funded and paid by the Spanish crown. These British soldiers were placed under the command of Espartero. Espartero went on to become Prime Minister of Spain in 1840 and ruled the country with an iron fist for two years. Having a British officer travelling throughout Spain either on a personal trip or to report back to Whitehall was of clear benefit to Britain. He travels to Barcelona from Toulouse France in September of 1840. There he meets a Colonel Clarke of the British Legion who has with him 150 Dragoons and a brigade of legionnaires. He makes reference to Espartero receiving a civic crown: Espartero received a civic crown of delicately wrought gold and placed it on the colours of the 'Esparterists' present - 13000 men of his army they are all well made muscular fine men fit for army service. He dines with a newspaperman commenting: Moor who writes for the morning chronicle has £5.00 - he accompanied the army - as a favourite of Espartero often dined with him - has been in some actions with him and has decorations displayed - has seven or eight but the Major of one of the Reg'ts has some 13 I think !!! He met others in positions of authority or influence as well: the American Consul in Barcelona Mr McCulloch - splendid house dining bad champagne tolerable sherry bad port. At Taragonna he sketches the harbour including a ship under sail. notes crops grown in areas along coast. He describes one village as a vile place. Another area is described as : A dusty bad road - no view - no beauty. The populace poor ragged and ugly - not one good-looking woman . terribly dull place cheap houses. There is a 2-page ink and pencil sketch of Alicante with the Santa Barbara Castle on the cliff above and a description of the harbour. He refers to Sir John Murray and his defeat of the French General Suchet at the battle of Castallia Apr 1813 and then goes on to comment on Murray's disastrous attempt to take Tarragonna in June of that same year. He comments on the quality of Spanish troops he encounters - very poor. His journey takes him south to Cartagena and Almeria - and includes 2 excellent ink and pencil sketches. His descriptions of these cities are detailed but quite disparaging - possibly reflecting both his class origins in Britain and his rank as a British officer travelling in country won by Wellington in the Peninsular War. There are 2 excellent drawings of the port of Malaga. He provides a detailed description of what he sees and experiences in Grenada the Generalife and the stunning Alhambra palace: "The whole is beyond all description". There are drawings of a number of notable locations in Granada. he frequently notes formations of Spanish troops: 10th Cordova Regiment review 3000 national guard . some fine men . well skilled . Captain Jml Llamos reviews From Grenada he carries on inland: the approach to Jaen is most beautiful lengthy gentle slopes covered with superb hues. Further west he passes villages where battles were fought in the Peninsular Campaign: The French General was a coward. He surrendered to half his number… In Cordova he mentions of Espartero again: Espartero began his influence successfully by shooting half a dozen colonels for cowardice. In Cadiz he noted that Espartero was present for a review of 2500 troops accompanied by a few well mounted well looking lancers and about 40 lancers of the Horse Volunteers Also in Cadiz in December of 1840 he notes the arrival of the Captain General of Andalusia: Captain General of Andalusia here from Sevilla in anticipation of some disturbances of the Election which begins tomorrow. He noted as well that a French frigate came in to the harbour during the election. This is an utterly fascinating first-hand account of travels during the turbulent 1840's in Spain. It is a gold mine for historians especially those studying the Napoleonic Wars or Spain and Britain in the 1840s. Whether from a military or social history perspective Hermans' notebook offers a rich source of first-hand observations. The ink and pencil drawings carry an evocative power of their own. There is a sense of places frozen in place giving them a timeless existence. The constant revolutions and struggles between the traditional forces that supported an authoritarian government and a growing liberal faction were of keen interest to Britain as she had a long-standing ally in neighbouring Portugal. This turmoil was to continue in one form or another into the 20th century culminating with the brutal dictator Francisco France. It wouldn't be until the late 20th century that Spain and the Spanish people would see true democratic freedom.; Manuscript; 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF CAPTAIN H. ‎CAPTAIN JAMES P MARTIN‎

‎1856 - 1858 ORIGINAL METICULOUSLY DETAILED JOURNAL AND LOG OF THE NEWLY LAUNCHED MERCHANT SHIP'S MAIDEN 3 YEAR VOYAGE CRISS CROSSING THE GLOBE FROM NEWBURYPORT TO CALCUTTA AND BEYOND‎

‎ASEA ABOARD BARQUE OAK HILL. Good. 1856. On offer is a super original manuscript ship's log kept from 1856 - 1858 handwritten in a lovely cultured hand by Captain James P. Martin while aboard and in command of the Barque 'Oak Hill' out of Boston. The very large folio book is completely filled with details of the ship and given this appears to be the ship's maiden voyage the captain has provided some 'genealogy': it begins with the ship being built in Scarborough Maine in 1856. "Her frame is of oak mostly cut on the spot from which she was named. Crew 14 no passengers." "First part have light breezes and pleasant weather the atmosphere very clean around the horizon mare's tails and mackerel sky. Surely if there is anything in signs we shall have a breeze tonight" and otherwise he has done a superb job recording these multiple voyages over the 3 year period. The ship log details voyages carrying lumber to Buenos Ayres South America then to Calcutta to pick up a large cargo of 10000 bags rice plus the constant life aboard a working ship: sightings of sea life catching a shark with whole squid in stomach a young whale follows the ship cat on board catches bird purple kelp shooting stars and a meteor being struck while in India by Brig Grappler which carried away head rails and scarred the bow returned to Calcutta. Later the damaged mast needed to be replaced. There is so much more for the collector or researcher of ocean going commerce. Softcover well chipped and torn 11" x 13.75" with about 122 pages filled about half log records of temps readings and half daily text of the journey Sept. 1856-March 1858. ‎Captain JFAE VAN KEMPEN J F A E‎

‎1895 ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN JOURNAL: “METEOROLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS OF THE DUTCH STEAMER JAVA” AS IT GOES FROM AMSTERDAM TO THE DUTCH WEST INDIES AND BACK‎

‎AMSTERDAM to THE DUTCH WEST INDIES and Back. Good. 1895. On offer is a small but fascinating 30 page book of handwritten weather observations and meteorological observations from the very end of the 19th century from an author on board the Dutch steam ship ‘Java’. From July 31st to November 15th 1895 the book records various quantitative and qualitative observations about the weather as the steamer travels from the Port of Amsterdam around the Andalusian Peninsula through the Strait of Gibraltar across the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal and ending up in Padang in what is now West Sumatra in Indonesia and what was then part of the Dutch Empire. From Padang the ship goes to a number of ports in Sumatra and Java Pasuruan Pegalongan Tandjung Priok and a few others before it sails back to Amsterdam along a similar route. The front page declares the book to be the: “Meteorological Observations of the Dutch steamer ‘Java’. 1895.” The verso of each page is taken up with the quantitative measurements of the weather. This includes “Latitude” and “Longitude” in degrees “Tide” in speed and direction “Barometer” in millimeters of mercury and “Thermometer” in celsius. The recto of each page is taken up with qualitative “Observations” of the weather and occasionally the name of the location where the steamer was situated that day. For example: “August 9. Sea calm clear sky. Breeze E.N.E. Passed at the First Watch Cape de Fen.”; “August 24. Passed the Isle of Socator. Heavy breeze S.S.W. High sea S.S.W. hazy atmosphere.”; “October 20. Heavy wind. High sea. Rainy weather. Sea and wind west.”; “October 24. Light breeze sky a little cloudy. Sea calm.” The only pages that depart from this format are the very first page of observations “Departed the 31 July at ten o’clock in the morning from Amsterdam at 3h 35m afternoon from the harbour at Ijmuiden.” and the two pages where the ship is in Java and Sumatra going from port to port before heading back home. The first page also shows that the book was ‘Presented to Weather Bureau in August 1924 by Capt. J. F. A. E Van Kempen Municipal Officer Soerabaia Java formerly an officer on the Dutch S.S. ‘Java’ by L. S. Aug 28 1924.” The book is 30 pages and containing 28 pages of writing. It’s cover is red cloth board showing light shelf and edge wear to the soft boards. The pages within are slightly loose from the binding but still connected. The handwriting is legible throughout with the exception for the few and far between words in which the ink ha smudged and made the reading slightly difficult. The pages are also thin so the ink shows from the other side of the page. However It does not make any words on the page illegible or unclear. This piece would make an excellent addition to the history of the Dutch Empire its trade and its naval capabilities. Overall: G; Manuscript; 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF DUTCH S.S. ‎1911 - 1947 ORIGINAL LARGE GROUP OF JOURNALS DECK LOGS LETTERS OF CORRESPONDENCE DOCUMENTS AND EPHEMERA RELATED TO THE SERVICE OF AN EAST COAST CANADIAN MERCHANT MARINE STEAMSHIP CAPTAIN PLYING HIS TRADE FROM THE MARITIMES QUEBEC AND THE WEST INDIES‎

‎PORT OF SYDNEY CAPE BRETON ISLAND SHEDIAC LEVIS. Good. 1911. On offer is a sensational original archive of journals 3 official Deck logs 3 100 letters of correspondence plus ephemera both personal and marine related including lists of passengers personnel letters of recommendation letters from passengers etc. all handwritten or compiled by Captain John Henry Hubley born in 1884 a seasoned ship's master by the age of 20 no doubt having gained experience from his father who was also a ship's Captain. The group will provide a treasure trove for historians and researchers of Canadian steamship history and Canadian Government merchant marine commerce. The travel diaries run the gamut of sea lore from daily data of weather position calculations and narrative of events occurring as would on any voyage to the West Indies. Of the deck logs two 2 detail trips to Levis one though is different as it is labelled by hand "OUR QUEEN" then the published: DECK LOG BOOK SS Canadian Recruit from the Port of Sydney C.B. Cape Breton to Levis P.Q. Province of Quebec June 25th 1921 - August 12th 1921." We surmise a later hand penned the OUR QUEEN as they have used some of the book for pasting clippings regarding Queen Elizabeth II's visit to Prince Edward Island in 1964. However little data is lost as the clippings were tipped in at the top edge in most cases and the entries underneath visible. The entries are all signed L.H. Dicks Chief Officer under Captain Hubley. Another book is for the S.S. Canadian Warrior also in 1921 to Montreal. Lastly there is a smaller 8 x 10 inch log with contains some financial like receipts or fees paid but mostly letters from the Canadian Government Merchant Marine for promotions and other milestones following Hubley's career and appointments. The larger format informal logs is marked beginning Voy 25 in 1934 the other begins Voy 81 East dated September 4th 1942 the book full through 1947. ‎CAPTAIN RUSSELL EDWARDS‎

‎1899 Original Superb Log and Travel Journal of a Busy Working Schooner Trading around the World‎

‎At Sea Aboard The Corby Castle. Good. 1899. On offer is the super original manuscript log and journal of the schooner 'Corby Castle' handwritten by we believe Captain Russell Edwards. A number of the first pages bear the heading with this name. The Captain writes a wonderful account of sea worthy events over 300 pages all having to do with the boat's travels in 1899 on this very busy ship traveling back and forth from Newport Gibraltar Malta Port Said Suez Colombo Alexandria Liverpool Karachi Rangoon Socotra Antwerp Flushing Galveston Barry and more. All matters technical and anecdotal relating to the ship cargo travels the ports-of-call are described in nautical lingo and one is transported to the high seas over 100 years ago. Here are some snippets that follow the numerical calculations the longitude and latitude entries lists of cargo and entries etc.: 1899 "January 16th Squalls fierce with heavy rain…Several vessels in company. Sea increasing rapidly. Weather ugly. Gale increasing and Squalls violent with hail and rain. Very high sea shipping water fore and aft. Decks flooded fore and aft. Forward awnings bars and stanchions washed away and destroyed by sea. After winch steam pipes and covers washed up and badly damaged. Fastenings broken. No abatement. Tremendous confused sea. Ships slowed down since 3 p.m. Head sea better. Squalls of hurricane force. No improvement Dangerous high sea. Decks flooded……." "January 17th Gale decreasing but mountainous sea. Weather improving sea truer. Kept ship away on course "full speed". Frequent heavy squalls and hail but great improvement. Fresh breeze heavy beam sea shipping sea water aft at times….Williams A. B. knocked down by sea on after deck leg badly hurt. Sea still very heavy. Williams and Johnson A.B. off duty sick list." "March 12th In Rangoon Went for a drive to the Lakes with Baugh and Georgie. Met the Vaillant's. After dined with Baugh and Georgie. Had dinner on board then went with the Gardner's to Valliant's. Had some good music and singing." "May 26th Had letter from Marion and sent one……Stopped took on board Port Said pilot proceeded. Moored in Port Said Harbor. Started coaling. Took in tons coal. Finished at 5:45 p.m. Took electric light on board. Canal pilot on board got underway…." "June 27th Strong breeze. S.W. fine. Clouded sky. Very high sea ship plunging and taking large quantities of water on board. Noon no change. Steam pipe covering abreast of No. 1 hatch broken away from fastening. Hole in latch flagged. Very heavy sea. Weather clear overhead. Misty round horizon." "August 5th Cargo on board; Cement Lime machinery preserved vegetables toys porcelain paper glassware nitrate of potash carbonate of magnesia tea salt perfumery talc coco chlorate potash wash blue acetate of soda slate pencils ware." There are so many entries like the ones above but he also got a rather sensitive side and one finds some poetry written in the front: "Kind messages that pass from land to land. Kind letters that betray the heart's deep history. In which we feel the pressure of a hand. One touch of fire and all the rest is mystery." "The words we do not say. Deeper then cords that search the soul and die mocking to ashes color's hot away. Closer then touch within our hearts they lie the words we do not say." He also mentions the other ships they see. The journal measures about 8 ¼" x 10 ½". ‎CAPTAIN THOMAS CLARKE‎

‎1810 ORIGINAL ENIGMATIC SHIP'S LOG BOOK OF AN UNUSUAL RUSSIA AND NORWAY TO RHODE ISLAND VOYAGE‎

‎ASEA ABOARD THE NARRAGANSETT. Good. 1851. On offer is a fascinating though enigmatic and curious 1810 manuscript ship's log of Captain Thomas Clarke's return voyage from Russia and Norway to Bristol Rhode Island on the ship "Narragansett". Dated September through December 1810 in many ways this is a typical 'Age of Sail' ship's log book classically filled with daily data required of all formal logs: weather winds sail settings navigational details and entries related to observations and events on and about the ship in this interesting and unusual east to wet trans-Atlantic voyage in an early 19th Century merchant vessel however it appears the book was started mid trip and begins at sea. Curiously someone after the voyage excised very neatly every other page of the journal leaving 26 otherwise well filled pages out of 44 pages in the remaining portion of the book. ‎Captain W S Cain (William Stephen Cain)‎

‎1908-1918 Author and Civil War Captain’s Manuscript Ledger of His Efforts to Market and Distribute His Book Plus Records of His Personal Correspondence‎

‎Atchison Kansas. Good with no dust jacket. Softcover. On offer is a fascinating ledger kept by a Kansas Civil War captain who farmed became a dry goods dealer and served in the Kansas legislature. The ledger mostly relates to his work marketing and distributing his own autobiography which is still available for sale. The ledger was kept intermittently from Sept 1908 through June 1918 by Captain William Stephen W. S. Cain 1836-1920. Cain was a white officer in the U. S. Colored Troops USCT during the Civil War. Born in the Isle of Man he settled in the USA in 1855. He lived in Wisconsin before purchasing 160 acres of land which he farmed near Atchison Kansas. Following the war Cain was elected to the Kansas’ legislature. In 1875 he moved into Atchison and established a dry goods business. Cain was married twice first to Anne Cowley and later to Susan Crouch. Cain and Susan had two children both of whom tragically died young CONTACT SELLER FOR FULL BIO NOTES. In his ledger Cain records his efforts to market and distribute his book titled “Autobiography of Captain W. S. Cain” which he published in 1908. Over the course of the 10 years he keeps this ledger it transitions into a record of all his correspondence related to both his book and his other life events. This ledger book is both a fascinating look at the world of marketing a small-scale niche book in the early 20th century and a goldmine of genealogical information given the hundreds of names Cain has noted. The ledger opens with Cain’s title “Record of my Book Sent out from Atchison” followed by a long list of names the number of copies they received and whether or not the recipient has paid. A selection of a few names on the list follow: “Arthur Miss Jenny Aunt Sophia Editor Globe Editor Champion Wm S Washer…Gov Crawford Judge Gill Patrick Rev F. S. White Father Girard Jessie A DeMuth Mrs. WA McKelvey…The President of the US…”Throughout 1908 and 1909 there are many such entries. Cain writes the date and lists the people who received copies of the book. As news articles are written about Cain and his book he notes the date of publication and to whom he is sending copies of articles.
