‎The Diary of a Young Girl‎

‎ABOUT THE BOOK:- The Diary of a Young Girl, also known as The Diary of Anne Frank, is a book of the writings from the Dutch language diary kept by Anne Frank while she was in hiding for two years with her family during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. This remarkable diary has become a world classic, which: · Is a powerful reminder of the horrors of war. · Offers a fascinating commentary on human courage and frailty and a compelling self-portrait of a sensitive and spirited young woman. · Is a timeless and eloquent testament to the human spirit. · Gives details about the petty frustrations of the confined quarters. · Shows Anne's adult wisdom and viewpoint beyond her years. The diary is not written in the classic forms of "Dear Diary" or as letters to oneself; Anne calls her diary "Kitty", so almost all of the letters are written to Kitty. Her account is thoughtful, moving, and surprisingly humorous. ABOUT THE AUTHOR:- Anne Frank was born in the German city of Frankfurt am Main in 1929. Anne’s sister Margot was three years her senior. Unemployment was high and poverty was severe in Germany, and it was the period in which Adolf Hitler and his party was gaining more and more supporters. Hitler hated the Jews and blamed them for the problems in the country. He took advantage of the rampant antisemitic sentiments in Germany. The hatred of Jews and the poor economic situation made Anne's parents, Otto and Edith Frank, decide to move to Amsterdam. There, Otto founded a company that traded in pectin, a gelling agent for making jam. She died when she was 15 years old. Before her death she wrote quite a few books like Diary of a young girl, Het Achterhuis. The Title 'The Diary of a Young Girl written/authored/edited by Anne Frank', published in the year 2019. The ISBN 9789353241520 is assigned to the Paperback version of this title. This book has total of pp. 350 (Pages). The publisher of this title is GenNext Publication. This Book is in English. ‎ANNE PATEAT‎

‎1937 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A WHIP SMART YOUNG WOMAN STUDYING ENGLISH AT A WOMEN'S ONLY COLLEGE PARTICIPATING IN ITS TIME HONORED TRADITIONS AND TRAVELLING THROUGH THE GRAND CITIES OF PRE-WAR EUROPE‎

‎MEREDITH COLLEGE RALEIGH NORTH CAROLINA NC. Very Good. 1937. On offer is the lovely and interesting diary of a young female art student studying at Meredith College in Raleigh North Carolina. Her name is Anne Pateat and she is quite the character describing her life in a comprehensive and lovingly detailed way writing of her many adventures and readings her thoughts on art and shakespeare and a myriad of other ripe topics for a young woman’s mind in school to think over. She is obviously quite the student as evidenced by the fact that she is a member of Silver Shield Honors Society Junior Editor of The Acorn a campus literary magazine member of the English club and Field Hockey team and an avid participator in the Meredith College Crook Hunt in which the Junior Class of which Anne and her friends belong hunts for a crook or shepherd’s staff hidden by the senior class. It is a tradition that has been in Meredith College since 1906 and the diary is filled with numerous attempts to find the crook on campus. “When 10 O’clock P.M. came around almost 6 of us started crooking and we were the usual sorry sights. We walked down the R.R. bend when we came to the highway. Maxie leafed around like a kangaroo and some one in a roadster stopped to find out what the trouble was. He went on when we started tearing back down the tracks. The next gentleman who stopped to investigated backed his car up and sat on the tracks and stared at us for several minutes. We were scared to death at first and ran wildly in all directions - but finally we stared him down - still no crook.” While at school her life is filled with frequent work for her English classes lots of Shakespeare Robert Browning and other formative authors. In July Anne takes an exciting trip across the Atlantic on the famous ‘Queen Mary’ to London Paris and then Edinburgh. “On board the S.S. Queen Mary and we almost didn’t make it! We went down to the dock at 10 to be early for a 12 o’clock sailing and lo and behold the thing pulled out at 10:30! Shudder shudder at the tho’t of missing it! It is quite the most wonderful ship I have ever seen” Her trip across the Atlantic is well and humorously noted and when she arrives in England she writes “the long awaited day is over and the family is together! And what a family! They took peculiar to me and they primped on me because of the way I talk - so it goes. My first impression was that they all looked pale - but they improve on acquiescence and keep me roaring with laughter.” She even takes to calling her family the “thundering herd.” Her trip makes up the last two months of entries in the journal and contains detailed accounts of everything seen and done in the European cities visited. “Boy oh boy oh boy! have we ‘done’ Paris!” The entries stop on August 21 but pick up again September 9th. “I vowed to start this little animal again when school commenced and it did in a big way.” However only two entries were written before it stops again. Finally on September 20 she writes “I’m making another brave attempt at keeping this poor thing alive!” but only a few days later on October 1st she writes her last entry in the book after which she stops writing in the journal for good. The diary as a whole is an absolutely fantastic look into the life of a strong humorous artistic young woman in the last few years before WW2. It’s a fantastic document of Meredith College of pre-war America and Europe and of a wholly unique life. The front and back cover are in good condition showing some scuffing and wear but are still very structurally sound. The pages within are free of major discoloration rips or tears. The handwriting is legible and readable throughout in blue ink. There is some fading of the ink at points but it does not affect legibility. The book is approximately 380 pages in length of which around 300 have writing. OVERALL: VG. Sample text: “Friday May 28 1937. The last exam is over and I’m a senior in College! Wonderful day this afternoon. I went for my final hour in the library and it felt wonderful. Lee took me down to Mac’s for supper and we drove around for a little while. Carl was there for supper and was right much fun. After I came back this P.M. I sat in the course and talked.”; “Friday June 4. Most of this day I have been closeted with Kristen and it’s got me going - this morning I did tear myself away from it long enough to go to town with Pris and buy me some silk to make a suit and 2 patterns - the things will be real pretty when they’re made up. Every time we tried to get stuff to match the blouse for the suit wwe had to bike out to sidewalk with a bolt of cloth to see if it was o.k. By light of day. At 12 we went to the Doctor’s Office and I got stuck with a typhoid shot. The only insult I can see or feel is a sore arm - I guess sleepyness is just my natural state. Pris went to a bridge party at 3 all dolled up in a leg bow hat among other things - and she came home without the Prize. ‘Happy’ has gotten so that she has to be scratched in a very winsome manner - It rained dogs and cats this aft and eve for a while.”; “Tuesday August 10. Boy oh boy oh boy! Have we ‘done’ Paris. This A.M. and aft. we took a conducted tour around the city and ‘did’ Napoleon’s Tomb he’s buried in 6 coffins to prevent desecration saw Heloise and Abelard Musset’s tomb a beautiful memorial to the Dead drove around the exhibition etc. This aft. we went to Notre Dame and saw the exquisite rose windows. There are some cardinal’s hats hanging in the ___ and when they fall from old age the souls of the deceased are supposed to leave purgatory. And this P.M. from 9 until 3 we have done the night life and have we done it! Several cabaret's and ended up at the Moulin Rouge dancing. The floor show there was grand and so was the orchestra. An English girl was the only other girl besides me so we didn’t lack for partners. The Champagne flowed without cease. After the Moulin closed we ended the evening at a street side place with coffee at least I did. The Eng. girl was the only one who spoke French so we all had a charming time.” Background: Anne Poteat Rose 94 born 1911 died Sunday April 24 2011 at the St. Francis Home after a period of declining health.

‎Very Good English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. 151-170 pp. Shah 'Inayat Shahid of Jhok: A Sindhi mystic of the early 18th century. Shah Inayatullah, popularly known as Sufi Shah Inayat Shaheed, Shah Shaheed, sometimes referred as the First Social Reformer of Sindh was a 17th-century Revolutionary from Jhok, Sindh who was executed at the hands of Mughal Emperor in early eighteenth century. Sufi Inayat was accused of leading small army of peasants (Harees) of his area to challenge the domination of Mughal Emperor Farrukhsiyar, local feudal landlords and Mullahs. His mantra was 'Jo Kherray so Khaey', means the one who ploughs has the foremost right on the yield. The popularity of Sufi Shah Inayat forced the feudal landlords of the area to contact Mughal King Farrukhsiyar who on wrong information ordered the ruler of northern Sindh Mian Yar Muhammad Kalhoro to uproot the Sufi Inayat and his companions. A prolonged siege of Jhok resulted in the offer of negotiations from Kalhora commander and Sufi Inayat accepted the offer to avoid further bloodshed. As he arrived for the negotiations in the enemy camp he was arrested and later executed in Thatto.‎

‎1894 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY THE BRIDE TO BE IN AN INTERESTING DECEMBER - MAY MARRIAGE‎

‎CHATHAM NEW YORK NY. Good. 1894. On offer is an original manuscript diary and fascinating late 19th Century look at love and relationships and most interestingly a May-December pairing of 33 year old Annie C. Mead b. 1861 of Chatham New York to 21 year old Sherman b.1873. Handwritten by the bride in 1894 we learn that Annie marries Sherman an undertaker as per the 1930 census on March 14th of 1894. She writes every day from January 1st to October 8th with only 14 days missed between those months. After October 8th the diary has no entries other then in the back memoranda where she's filled out two pages showing what they received for wedding presents. Annie's does a great job as a diarist providing names genealogical information local events and insight into her life. Another interesting item we note from her writings is that Sherman suffers from constant headaches. They are so bad at times that he has to stay in bed all day. Of further interest to researchers of women studies and gender issues is that Sherman is under the care of Dr. Hattie Van Buren. Here are some snippets: 1894 "January 6th Powder well exploded at Rosendale. Shook our house like an earthquake. I cleaned the parlor and dining room in the morning. Sewed until 4 P.M. Went up street and paid bills. Spent the evening playing hymns and studying S. S. lesson." "January 15th Mary Washed. I did the house work. Sewed until noon. About 2 o'clock Sherman came for me to go to Valatie for my watch. We saw where Kendall's building had burned the night before. Went to Mrs. Mead's for tea. Walt Pears lost his baby that morning. Mr. M. brought us home. Rained so stayed in." "February 23rd Sarah mamma and I sewed all day. I went to bank jewelry store Rogweski's and Hattie Wheeler's in the afternoon. Mamma was taken sick with colic in afternoon. Was sick all night. Sherman came about seven and went to lecture. He stayed all night." "March 14th Wedding Day Worked all the morning clearing the rooms. Helen and Clara went to Roller's for flowers to decorate the rooms. We were married at half past two by Reverend William F. Compton. Left for Albany at 5:08 P.M. Stayed at the Globe Hotel." "March 17th Packed our bag in the morning. Spent the time from there until three o'clock talking to Mr. and Mrs. Ketchwick. Took the three o'clock horse car for Mechanicville. Took train for Albany and 5 o'clock train for home. Found mamma much better." "March 22nd Sherman too sick to go to the farm. His father came to see him. Got him some medicine which he took. Was quite sick in the afternoon. I had to go up street. Hart Johns shot himself." "April 2nd Mrs. Mead and I went to Albany at 11:40. Brought carpet shades and curtains and some cups and saucers. Got home at six o'clock. Sherman had been home. He met us at the train. He and I went up street in the evening." "May 3rd Sherman so sick with his head that we went to Dr. Hattie Van Buren. She told him not to work for a few days. Mrs. Mead cleaned the setting room. ‎Annie M Barker Potter‎

‎1919 Diary of the Business-Minded Matriarch of the La Fox Illinois Potter Family Who Were Integral in the Region’s Growth in the Late 1800s‎

‎La Fox Illinois Kane County. Good with no dust jacket. 1919. On offer is the incredible 1919 diary of Annie M. Barker Potter 1840-1933 kept when she was the 79-year-old widow of La Fox Blackberry Township Kane County Illinois visionary Lemuel Milk Potter 1830-1897. Originally of the Plymouth Massachusetts Barkers Annie married fellow Massachusetts native sea captain and widower Lemuel Milk Potter in 1863. That same year Annie and Lemuel alongside Annie’s brother Henry H. Barker 1848-1889 moved to La Fox Kane County Illinois. The entrepreneurial Lemuel became a key player in La Fox’s early development. In collaboration with Henry Lemuel purchased an interest in Frederick Dean’s store and renamed it Potter’s General Store. He and Henry also constructed a grain elevator and a cheese factory which was converted to a creamery and later became a meeting place La Fox Hall in La Fox. Lemuel also had a large residence built for his own family in La Fox. SEE BIO NOTES FOLLOWING LISTING FOR MORE ON THE POTTERS. Annie and her adult children were actively involved in the thriving Potter family businesses at the time she kept this diary. A large number of her entries relate to her role within the business. Annie comments regularly on the Potter’s general store her investments financial transactions and business dealings as the inferred manager of the Potter’s other properties. It is impressive that Annie a female in her golden years was still respected as a key player in the business by the surviving Potter men. She was also very socially engaged involved in women’s clubs and keenly aware of the comings and goings of members of the community. Some excerpts of her diary which cover the year of 1919 give the flavour of her entries and her relationships with the larger Potter family: “Charlie Eatman and Blanche and Althea are here. I have been writing to Alden” Feb 23. “Recd of CA Potter to apply on principal of loan $100 and I paid that into the store this top up all the loans on the trust deed of $3500 except a little interest” April 12. “I went down town with Doc nickname for her son Charles and sent my $15.00 Liberty Loan off to be registered and I got the int on my $25.00 Liberty loan also on my $14.00 liberty loan The 60 Club met at Mrs. Caldwell’s. My int on loans was $50 50 on one and 30 30 on the other” April 24. “Had a telegram from Angie that Everett Chaffee died suddenly today. Frank Pudds wife also died today. Rec’d…note $6.00 took this to store and got the money on it” May 27. “I’ve been copying my statement and making out my yearly statement. A hard wind storm has just come up and we think it may take some of the strawberries. We are beginning to have them going to have quite a lot. Tayler paid me rent to Dec 15 1919 $48.00” June 11. “Have just written to Lizzie about the change over w the store. Arlo and Bill have been to St. Charles Doc and Grace were up tonight to talk business” Oct 16. “Got word from Doc that he had heard from Herbert that it was all right to sell the property” Oct 24. “All the Finns were up…for dinner tonight we went to Elburn on the O. E. R. To the entertainment…got home about 1 o’clock” Nov 21. “I was sick all night last night and all the forenoon. Got my check from Scott Washburn for rent. 6.00 for Dec 1919” Nov 30. As well as keeping her diary nearly every day for the year of 1919 Annie also kept good track of her finances in the Cash Account section at the back of the diary providing a clear picture of her transactions and financial habits. This diary provides an insightful peek into the business and personal dealings of the La Fox Illinois Potter family who were vital in the building up of the community and whose work in La Fox still stands today. Annie is a strong elderly woman who is more active than many women half her age. She is obviously extremely savvy in business and finance. This diary would be a valuable addition to the collection of any historian or anyone interested in the role of women in business in the early 20th century the experiences of widows of entrepreneurs in maintaining family legacies and those interested in the Potter family or pioneering residents of Illinois in general in particular Kane County. Diary measures approximately 5x3 inches. Cover is chipping slightly but the spine and pages are all intact. Diary is 90% complete and writing is legible. Overall Good. BIO NOTES: Lemuel Milk Potter of Massachusetts first married Elizabeth A. Davis 1835-1855 in May of 1854. Together they had one son Alden Howland Potter 1855-1933. Following Elizabeth’s death only two months after Alden’s birth Lemuel married Annie M. Barker also of Massachusetts in 1863. Annie was born to William and Rebecca Potter Barker. Together Annie and Lemuel had five children: James 1866-1906 Arthur b. 1872 died in infancy Nellie Emma 1874-1899 Charles “Doc” Arthur Potter Sr. 1878-1966 and Elizabeth Potter Wing 1868-1955. Prior to becoming a force of nature almost single-handedly building up La Fox Illinois Lemuel worked as a whaling captain from May 1859 through June 1863. He left the ship he was captaining the “Mary Ann” in June of 1863 and married Annie that October. They moved to La Fox Illinois after they married. Lemuel’s first child Alden Howland Potter married Jane Carr Bliss 1861-1929. They were parents to Alden Archibald Potter 1884-1961 Zenas Lemuel Potter 1886-1958 Jessica Potter Broderick Johnson 1896-1991. The Potter family has remained very important in Kane County with Potters constructing or buying at least 12 buildings in La Fox. The Potter and Barker Grain Elevator which Lemuel and Henry built in 1868 was an important grain transfer point and was added to the United States’ National Register of Historic Places in 2016. This listing was re-researched re-written and re-listed in 2025.; Manuscript; 48mo - over 3" - 4" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF ALDEN A.
