ill., br. Ilio Barontini è stato un antifascista che fu costrettoa fuggire all'estero. Ha avuto un'esistenza che per molti fuoriusciti solo una "fede" poteva rendere accettabile. Eppure la figura di questo terzinternazionalista non fu mai quella del sacerdote rosso. La sua azione - in Spagna a combattere la guerra civile, in Etiopia a portare avanti un'azione che aveva il sapore della disperazione, in Urss dove era facile il sospetto - lo rese sempre una figura problematica. Durante la Resistenza organizzò, diresse e istruì i 'franc tireurs' nella Francia Meridionale e i gappisti in Alta Italia. Conosciuto come Dario, fu comandante partigiano nell'Emilia Romagna. Alla fine della guerra, per i suoi meriti indiscussi, fu decorato tanto dall'Unione Sovietica che dagli Stati Uniti.

Nell’opera “si dimostra come, e per chi le belle arti di pittura, scultura e architettura, lasciata la rozzezza delle maniere greca e gotica, si siano in questi secoli ridotte all’antica loro perfezione”. Questa edizione porta in Appendice la ristampa della “Vita del Bernini” (che l’A. scrisse per commissione di Cristina regina di Svezia). Così Schlosser Magnino, p. 466: “E’ questa in realtà la prima storia universale dell’arte figurativa in Europa, scritta in uno stile impeccabile, sì da esser compresa fra i testi di lingua della Crusca.. Si comincia con l’avo leggendario Cimabue (1260) fino ad arrivare a Fra Mattio Preti, detto il Pittor Calabrese (1670).. Baldinucci ha riunito documenti e altri manoscritti in quantità rilevante, e anche se la sua critica è talvolta discutibile, con questo uso di relazioni autentiche egli si avvicina al tipo del moderno storico dell’arte”. Divenne poi il quinto volume dei sei tomi delle tre estese edizioni successive del Baldinucci, comprendenti notizie biografico-artistiche dal XV al XVII secolo. Esemplare a pieni margini assai fresco (legatura modesta)..
