‎Edward Dudley Tucker‎

‎1911-1915 Diary of an Engaging Pittsburgh High and Carnegie Tech Student Coming-Of-Age before Enlisting in the Great War‎

‎Pittsburgh Pennsylvania PA. Very Good with no dust jacket. Hardcover. On offer is diary filled with the musings of a student age 17 when he begins writing that provides exceptional insight into the experience of a teenage boy in the years before World War One. The diary belonged to Edward Dudley Tucker 1893-1977 who went by Dudley SEE BIO NOTES AT END OF LISTING. Dudley kept the diary regularly from January through August of 1911 while completing his junior year of high school. He returns to his diary for a couple entries in 1912 when he had just completed a summer job at an electrical company and is beginning his studies at Carnegie Tech which would later become a part of Carnegie Mellon University. The diary concludes with a final entry in April of 1915 where Dudley writes of the death and burial of his family’s 17-year-old dog Toby. He also uses a few additional pages to note his expenses while attending Carnegie Tech. Tipped into the diary are two manuscript letters and a printed dance card from Dudley’s high school dance in April 1912. The two letters are from 1911 one being a newsy familiar letter written to Dudley by his friend Hazel and another being a detailed letter written by Dudley to his Aunt Helen where he provides great detail about his studies in senior year and his devoted work on his model airplanes. His diary is written in a ledger book allowing him freedom to write extensive and descriptive entries which he often does. Some entries span pages and provide details of his experiences lists of friends’ names and even drawings. Other entries are just a quick line or two. “I went out to the library to get some material for my debate on the 20th today. I did not know how to act but found out…” Jan 17 1911“I lost my debate to-day but only by a little bit they clapped me but not Beistel. I lost on account of the following. I should only write the headings and write them large and in ink and number them and leave a space of about a line between each…. Be sure to get the material on both sides of the question and get things to knock out his proofs. And greatest of all go slow take plenty of time…and don’t be afraid to pause…” Jan 20 1911. “We initiated Cornell into the club the 500 Club to-nite we did a lot of things to him. We were all dressed up so he wouldn’t know us. We gave him some sweet stuff then some quinine then we put a mustard plaster on his arms then we painted U. S. On his hands with iodine and then tarred and feathered one finger. Then we gave him a dippy note to give the druggist. He gave it to him and the druggist laffed and showed it to a customer. Connell says he’ll make the next initiative strong enough for the next member. I am reading sweet book “The Golden Kingdom” by Andrew Balfour. This is some songs taken out of it…. ” Feb 10 1911. On May 20th he describes a hike in the countryside and accompanies the description with a very detailed map of the immediate area he explored with some friends. “.Hyppo and Eli and I took a walk down in Fern Hollow yesterday. We went down past the gas wells and then climbed up where I found the Indian last Sunday. There Eli got a couple of ferns I had told him about and then we climbed to the top of the hill where there is an orchard an old disused railway and a path…” May 20 1911. “I was down to Tech to see Dean Leete today and had my personal interview. I met a fellow from Texas whose name is McBride. I spent 10 cents for cab fare” March 25 1912. “.I hated to see those little kids doing those stunts on the stage the other night at the Rowland Circus. It seems barbarous to me that we should allow such things when it probably shortens the life of the person greatly. I saw Sue Trotter this afternoon for the first time for about a month. Gee she sure has got some shape. I saw Jennie Mountford this afternoon too. Her hair is sure bleached some. She makes everybody call her “Jean” now. Some loving believe me…” Dec 15 1912. At the back of the book is a list titled “Things I want To Do. From context this list was written after his return from WWI or during a leave. It includes: . “Fix my army stuff to my walls Find a way to take a picture through a telescope Put electric lights in my cabinet.” and more. For a social historian this diary gives a fine look inside the life of an American teenage boy in the years immediately preceding WWI. A genealogist would find the list of school friends very helpful in researching family and community connections. BIO NOTES: Dudley was born in Westboro Massachusetts to parents Frances Augusta Robinson and Curtis Allen Tucker and raised in Edgewood Allegheny Pennsylvania He graduated from Pittsburgh Central High School in 1912 and later graduated from Carnegie Tech. He became a civil engineer and worked in a variety of places including Koppers Company. He served in World War One from November 1915 through June 1919. In 1923 he married Mary Strang in Wilkinsburg PA. Together they had one daughter Mary Jane Tucker. The journal was kept in a ledger book measuring 11.75x7.5 inches. It contains 100 numbered pages plus 6 others inserted into it. It is about 50% complete. The covers are in good condition as are the binding and the pages. The handwriting is legible. Overall VG. ; Manuscripts; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 100 pages; Signed by Author . hardcover‎

‎EDWARD E AVERY‎

‎1913 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DIARY BY A HARD DRINKING HARD DATING EAST LYNN MASSACHUSETTS MAN‎

‎EAST LYNN MASSACHUSETTS MASS MA BOSTON AREA. Good. 1913. On offer is an original 1913 handwritten manuscript diary by Edward E. Avery who lived in and around East Lynn Massachusetts mentioning frequent trips to Swampscott East Lynn Boston Salem and Olympia. This is a very interesting look at a pre World War I American male as he passes his days dating drinking bowling and hanging out with his pals. While he initially begins the year seeming a placid fellow as the weather warms so does his temperament as he has a scrap or two with his pals and he has plenty of girl trouble and not only trouble between different girl friends but also with their parents. His very last sentence for the year on December 31st seems to sum it all up: "I suppose there will be trouble now for we were almost caught tonight." While we are uncertain of his age though most certainly a young man 20-25 we approximate or profession here are snippets that will enlighten: 1913 "Janaury15th Cold in a.m. Warmed up and rained a little in the evening. Tonight I meet G. F. at 7:15. We took the 7:30 train for Salem. Went into the Empire Theatre to see "The Easiest Way." It was a great play and played by a good company. The 11:09 was twenty minutes late so we didn't get home until 12. I won't see her again until Sat. evening. None of the fellows up to the house have been near me except Stewart and he came down Sunday because I asked him to so as to pay him what I owed him." "January 19th Clear and very warm for this time of year. I didn't get up until noon. I read all the p.m. Went across the street and engaged board then met G. F. We went to the Chinese restaurant and had supper. She came up in the room until 9:30. I don't know but I guess she thinks I am slow well I am not that kind of a fellow and she will find out so when she knows me better. I wrote a letter home one to New Mexico. My sister comes tomorrow. Cut out cigarettes today for some time. I don't know how long it will last." "February 16th I didn't get up until 10:30. Wrote a letter home one to N.M. Went out and had dinner. Down to Peaves. Went up with Jammie F. to his room at 4. We came up in the square and picked up a couple of girls from Salem. I left them and met G. F. at 6:15. She came down to the room and stayed until 10. I have her guessing for fair but I am sick of girls and all that goes with them. It is a damn nescience to be bothering around with them. Went in Hunt's and had supper at 12 o'clock. I think I will get married." "March 1st Nothing goes right and I am always wrong. I try to do what is right and am always taken as bad. I think I will get out of Lynn before long but what's the use." "March 2nd ……I have been fighting depression. I don't know. I don't seem to find joy in anything or something. I wonder why I ever was born. I suppose life is what we make it but I can't make myself happy. Something seems to be plucking love!" "April 17th Fair. Left Lynn at 9:15. Dinner at Portsmouth at Ham's. Won't serve any beer said we were drunk. Got ditched twice……" "April 24th Down to Auditorium tonight with G. F. and Mr. and Mrs. Denton. Came home. Fellow was going to murder a girl on Broad St. Some excitement for a time. 11:30." "May 9th In shop most of day. Tonight G. F. was down to room. We had a little falling out. She was mad because a girl called me up and drove because Rich is going to meet her tomorrow night. If she wants to see me again she is to call me up. I shall never call her. She is altogether too mean for me. She doesn't like any of my friends and everything I do is wrong. A hell of a lot I am…." "May 30th & 31st Left Lynn at 8:15 for Centerville Cape Cod. Had a blow out before we got to Point of Pines. 45 minutes to change shoe. Cape at 2.…Out fishing at 7:30. Over to Hyannis to Dennis this p.m. toyed around until 10:15. Bed." "July 29th Met V.G. tonight. Over to band concert on High Rock. Came home. She said she was willing to marry me…." "August 14th Took Misses down to Swampscott. Up to V.C's Up canoeing. Home. Had a nightcap. Tried out V.C. Nothing doing. She is as good as gold. Her sisters are always picking on her. I am going to have a talk with her mother." "August 28th Home. Drunk tonight. Louis and Jim took care of me. Louis and I went over to Nahant and got a quart. Took Miss Hyde and Polly over. Broke shifting lever." "September 22nd ……Called up V.C. at 9:30. Talked until 12:30. All we did was scamp. She got sore over nothing and I helped it along. I wert sore but she thinks I am. Nothing doing. I love her too much but I do like to kid her poor child." "October 8th Didn't work today. Out a little while this p.m. Up to V.C's tonight. Some one told Olive that I told them V.C. was up to my room last night. They are all mad with me up there except V.C. The poor kid. I have only made life hard and miserable for her ever since we met. I am wrong for I have always tried to be on the square with her that is more than I ever did for anyone else. But from now on I shall cut Guy Roberts and Jim Delong off my list of friends." "October 10th Went to work at seven. Bors told me I was to go with him to the Mts. All my troubles seem to come in a bunch. I guess I have lost V.C. I can't loose her. I had about as soon die as to loose her. Her sisters are all to blame. I may be better off without any girl but I never before loved as I do her. Why don't she call me up Olive said she would as soon as she got home. It is now 11:15. Surely she is home by now." "October 14th Snow about 2 inches. Something seldom heard of. Well I am back in Lynn but I guess I shall love V.C. I meet her tonight and her mother has given her the choice of school or me. If I love her it won't be for long because I can't give her up and I think she love me too. We drove about all the way in snow." "November 24th Had card from G. D. F. today saying she was in Lynn. Didn't see V.C. or haven't heard from her tonight. She may call me up later. I was down and bowled a couple of lines tonight. I am in a bad box now. I don't know how to work it. G. F. wants me back and I don't want to go. The game will be hard and V.C. will have to help me but we can win with all she can say." "November 29th ……Met V.C. at 9:30. She wants me to leave her for a month to show her mother that she doesn't care for me or something. I couldn't just get it. Anyway she has changed her mind over. Why can't we get along without so much trouble First one then the other. Will it ever end It has been going on almost from the day I met her." "December 31st ….Met V.C. Put car in Essex. She and I came up here. Both went to sleep woke up at 11:30. Down to commons to concert. Took her home in car. Left her at 1. Doron got Boss at 2. Home at 2:15. V. is sick. I can't find out what is the matter with her. I don't want her to get sick. It is hard enough now as it is. I suppose there will be trouble now for we were almost caught tonight." There is so much more to this diary. He writes for every day of the year and since this is a "page a day" diary his entries are usually quite long. And as with most diaries lots of names are mentioned some of which are; Gertrude French Phillips Mae Perry Al Mitchell Lucy Dixon Dearborn Guy Roberts Fred Woodward Denton Hastings Hubbard and more. The diary is in good condition and measures about 4" x 7". ; Manuscript; 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall; MASSACHUSETTS DRINKING ALCHOLISM DRUNKENNESS GENDER STUDIES PRE PROHIBITION PRE WORLD WAR I PRE WWI HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH KEEPSAKE WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL PERSONAL HISTORY AMERICANA ALS ARCHIVE DIARY DIARIES CIVIL WAR ERA WAR BETWEEN THE STATES ANTIQUITÉ CONTRAT VÉLIN MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT GENEALOGY antiquité contrat vélin document manuscrit papier Antike Brief Pergament Dokument Manuskript Papier oggetto d'antiquariato atto velina documento manoscritto carta antigüedad hecho vitela documento manuscrito . unknown‎

‎EDWARD EVERETT LOVEJOY‎

‎1860s SUPER ORIGINAL PAIR OF MANUSCRIPT DIARIES HANDWRITTEN BY A DEDICATED STUDENT OF THE NOTED NEWTON ENGLISH AND CLASSICAL SCHOOL‎

‎Massachusetts. Good. 1861. On offer is an outstanding pair of journals written at the outbreak of the American Civil War. Each volume measures 8 inches by 6 1/2 inches and contains 144 pages essentially 100% complete. The journals run from April 1861 through December 1862. They are hard cover and the pages are intact and in good condition. The handwriting is clear and legible. The author is Edward Everett Lovejoy. Research shows that he was born in 1845 in Boston MA and died at age 70 in Bangor ME in 1915. At the time of writing Lovejoy was a student at the well-known West Newton English and Classical School. An Illustrated Biographical Catalogue of the Principals Teachers and Students of the West Newton English and Classical School West Newton Mass p118 . This school was established by Nathaniel Topliff Allen and he was assisted by his brother George. Both of these men and their brothers and wives were noted educators. Nathaniel Bell George Bell and his wife are mentioned in the journals. To quote from historical notes associated with the Allen Papers: "The school was progressive in every way providing equal educational opportunities for girls as well as boys in racially mixed classes. The inclusion of gymnastics as part of the educational offering along with a pure kindergarten were also educational firsts. Allen required student's to keep daily journals that were critiqued every two weeks. ." Lovejoy's diaries are certainly part of these daily journals. Not only are they scrupulously maintained they are also evaluated and his teachers notes can be found in the margins. Most of the entries naturally refer to school life activities. He notes class presentations assignments and daily interactions with staff and friends. He studied English Grammar Spelling Mathematics Natural Philosophy Geography Music and French as well as taking part in sports such as cricket swimming and baseball. He was also elected 2nd Lieutenant for the schools cadet corps. "Mr. William read my name this morning to be in the first class in . I have been in Mr. James Allen's class . but now I have to speak up here before the school and recite today in spelling. Mr. N.T. Allen gives us words from the dictionary and we write them in the little books and hand them in to him and he corrects them."Apr 26 1861 The margin note from his teacher reads: "Well begun in many respects. Sorry to see so many words misspelled". Today I recited in Botany then in Geography then in Grammar then in Natural Philosophy. We had a very hard time in Natural Philosophy. There were so many engines to explain about and explain all about the different pieces of machinery and their use" May 22 1861. He mentions a visit to the Boston Aquarial and Zoological Gardens and seeing a white whale Beluga June 6 Slipped into that page is a printed excerpt from the Boston Journal describing the exhibit. By far the most interesting entry is dated April 21 1861: "I heard that yesterday that a man on State Street Boston was discussing with another and one said something about secession and the other man drew a pistol and shot the other down but did not kill him." Apr 21 1861 He goes on to describe a subsequent riot by a mob in Baltimore. This riot known as the Baltimore Riot of 1861 or the Pratt Street Massacre took place when a mob of Confederate sympathizers set upon a column of Union soldiers passing through to Washington. It resulted in the first Union deaths of the Civil War: ". while the troops were marching along one man snatched a musket from one of the troop and shot him through the back and killed him ." Apr 21 1861. The Civil War came to his door when his parents visited him at school to tell him that an acquaintance who worked for his father had died from exposure on duty. May 26 1862. Records indicate that after graduating he went into business apparently trading in lumber and stocks. These two journals are an outstanding resource for a historian studying American education in the mid19th century. They provide a fascinating glimpse into the efforts during this time of turmoil to provide a classical education to young people. They could also form the basis for an interesting comparison to education efforts today.; Manuscript; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF UNITED STATES MASSACHUSETTS BOSTON WEST NEWTON NEWTON VILLAGES MIDDLESEX COUNTY 19th CENTURY 1860s EDWARD EVERETT LOVEJOY; WEST NEWTON ENGLISH AND CLASSICAL SCHOOL; AMERICAN CIVIL WAR; ALLEN FAMILY PAPERS; HISTORIC NEWTON; AMERICAN EDUCATION IN THE MID-19TH CENTURY PRATT STREET MASSACRE BALTIMORE RIOT OF 1861 19th CENTURY CURRICULUM SCHOOL EDUCATION IN AMERICA SCHOOL STUDENTS IN 19th CENTURY NATHANIEL TOPLIFF ALLEN 19th CENTURY EDUCATORS AMERICANA HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS DIARY DIARIES JOURNALS PERSONAL HISTORY SOCIAL HISTORY HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUITÉ CONTRAT VÉLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGÜEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . hardcover‎

‎1927 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF A YOUNG MAN'S FIRST VOYAGE PROUDLY AS THE DECK BOY BUT NOT ONE AFRAID TO TAKE A TURN AT THE WHEEL‎

‎ASEA ABOARD THE SS WEST HARCUVAR. Good. 1927. On offer is an utterly charming from a fascinating perspective original 1927 manuscript trip diary handwritten by E.J. Austin Deck Boy on the SS W. Harcuvar. Edward as we learn from a tucked in news clipping about the 38 year old man uses a 'Composition' notebook beginning Sunday April 17th to May 31st while undated the year matches up to 1927. He begins with the first entry as if a the book is a long letter to his mother and family. Typically his first few days aboard ship as a new crewman is fraught with the highs and lows: the sea air makes for a big appetite and then the rolling of the waves make for a 'green' sailor in both definitions of the situation. By the end of the first few weeks he is an old tar taking his turn at the wheel in between paint chipping sessions at the forecastle. The book also contains a letter perhaps unfinished tucked in dated Summer 1928. At the back of the 8vo book are some religious writings including "The Path of Freedom" Presence of God. ‎Edward Maunde Thompson‎

‎Diary Of Richard Cocks : Cape-merchant In The English Factory In Japan, 1615-1622 With Correspondence Volume 2nd [Hardcover] Volume 2nd‎

‎About The Book : The history of the English trading settlement in Japan in the first quarter of the seventeenth century is the history of a failure; and the causes of the failure are not far to seek. Choosing for their depot an insignificant island in the extreme west of the kingdom, without even good anchorage to recommend it, and at a far distance from the capital cities of Miako and Yedo, with the Dutch for their neighbours and, as it proved, their rivals, the English may be said to have courted disaster. It is true that firando was a ready port for shipping coming from Europe; its ruler was friendly ; and it lay in a convenient position from whence to open the much- desired trade with China. And the policy of making common cause with the Protestant Hollanders against the Spaniards and Portuguese, who had first secured a footing in Japan and were powerful in the neighbouring town of Nagasaki, would have been a sound one, had the latter remained supreme. But, when the English landed, the Dutch had already obtained privileges and had established their trade in the country; and what ought to have been foreseen inevitably came to pass. About The Author : Sir Edward Maunde Thompson GCB FBA (1840–1929) was a British palaeographer and Principal Librarian and first Director of the British Museum. He is noted for his handbook of Greek and Latin palaeography and for his study of William Shakespeare's handwriting in the manuscript of the play Sir Thomas More. Richard Cocks (1566–1624) was the head of the British East India Company trading post in Hirado, Japan, between 1613 and 1623, from its creation, and lasting to its closure due to bankruptcy.‎

‎EDWARD RISCHMANN‎

‎1918 SIGNIFICANT ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT LETTER HANDWRITTEN BY ONE OF AMERICA'S MOST HONOURED SOLDIERS OF WWI RETELLING THE ACTION THAT LED TO HIS DISTINGUISHED SERVICE CROSS AND WHOSE VERSION DIFFERS FROM THE OFFICIAL GOVERNMENT CITATION‎

‎WESTERN FRANCE. Good. 1918. On offer is a simply outstanding first-hand account which differs with the official account of how a soldier won the second highest military decoration in the United States. This handwritten letter is 4 pages long and each of the two pages measures 9 inches by 6.75 inches. Although a bit frayed in some places along the edges the letter is completely intact. The handwriting is legible and easily read. Edward Rischmann was an American soldier who served with Company I 312th Infantry Regiment 78th Division A.E.F. near Grand Pre France. He was a private. The letter was written on Oct 22nd 1918. Rischmann was 23 at the time. On October 23rd he participated in the assault on the Citadel of the French town of Grandpre. This action was a small part of the overall Meuse-Argonne Offensive. It was the largest military operation in United States military history involving 1.2 million American soldiers. It was one of a series of Allied attacks known as the Hundred Days Offensive which brought the war to an end. The battle cost 28000 German lives 26277 American lives and an unknown number of French lives. It was the largest and bloodiest operation of World War I for the American Expeditionary Force AEF which was commanded by General John Pershing and it was the second-deadliest battle in American history. Rischmann's citation succinctly describes his actions. The citation however is incorrect: "CITATION: The President of the United States of America authorized by Act of Congress July 9 1918 takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Edward Rischmann ASN: 2412427 United States Army for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company I 312th Infantry Regiment 78th Division A.E.F. near Grand Pre France 23 October 1918. Private Rischmann was a member of an assaulting party which stormed and captured the Citadel at Grand-Pre. He scaled the wall and alone entered a dugout from which he captured 45 Germans guarding them until assistance arrived". His letter however breathes life into those dry words. Filled with courage humanity and at times despair his letter presents a haunting picture a man plunged into the hell of close combat: "In the middle of the roadway lay one of our dead soldier lads dead laying on his front part of his stomach. It was a pitiful sight to stare at. I can never get it out of my memory of this beloved young soldier lad who was shot down and killed while he was advancing toward the enemies. I will never forget as it is as though this boys position and his agonies he suffered dying there is imprinted into my mind". Although the Citation says he scaled the wall and alone entered a dugout from which he captured 45 Germans guarding them until assistance arrived. Rischmann's own words describe a grimmer reality. As he writes in his letter in the assault Rischmann was captured. He was led by his captors into that dugout. Because he was able to speak German he could communicate with his captors and began to help treat their wounded. "I was taken into a dugout that led into the earth. . What befell my youthful body and eyes I will never forget here were dying comrades of their army suffering in terrible pain. I quickly went to work and asked for bandages . I done everything human for these unfortunate men for I too felt sorry for them". A short while later he was questioned by a senior German officer and he offered to take their surrender and thus save their lives: ". I can save their lives and mine if they would surrender and give up to me. They held a brief talk together and suddenly the highest one who happened to have an iron cross pinned on his uniform said Alright Comrade We Give Up. So forty five Germans surrendered to me". Rischmann lived a full life after the war. He passed away in 1978 at the age of 83. This is an outstanding piece of primary documentation from World War 1.For a war historian it is precious. It provides the flavour and the context of an event that clearly warranted recognition. It conveys the immediacy of the action and hints at the horrors that he witnessed. It is a superb piece of battlefield history.; Manuscript; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF; 20TH CENTURY; NEWARK; NEW JERSEY; 1910s; FIRST WORLD WAR; WW1; GREAT WAR; EDWARD RISCHMANN; WORLD WAR 1; AEF; AMERICAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE; GENERAL JOHN PERSHING; 312TH REGIMENT; MEUSE-ARGONNE OFFENSIVE; GRANDPRE FRANCE; DISTINGUISHED SERVICE CROSS; DSC; WARTIME CORRESPONDENCE; WARTIME LETTERS; WAR HEROES; HUNDRED DAYS OFFENSIVE 78TH DIVISION OF AMERICAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE; 312TH INFANTRY REGIMENT; MILITARY HISTORY; PERSONAL NARRATIVES OF WW1; AMERICAN HEROES OF WW1; AMERICANS AND GERMANS ENCOUNTERS IN THE GREAT WAR; NEWARK SOLDIERS IN WW1; GREAT WAR HEROES FROM NEW JERSEY ; FRANCE; WESTERN FRONT; INFANTRY DIVISIONS OF THE US ARMY; AMERICANA HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS DIARY DIARIES JOURNALS PERSONAL HISTORY SOCIAL HISTORY HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUITÉ CONTRAT VÉLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGÜEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . unknown‎

‎EDWARD S SCHWANTES‎

‎1917 ORIGINAL CHARMING PEEK INTO YOUNG LOVE AND COURTING WITH THE AWFUL BACK DROP OF WWI LOOMING FOR A COUPLE WHO WOULD JOIN IN LIFE FOR NEARLY 6 DECADES‎

‎RIDGEFIELD WASHINGTON WA. Good. 1917. On offer is a lovely original manuscript record of a young man's efforts to court a girl with whom he has obviously fallen in love. This soft cover journal is actually a notebook in which he has written in the dates and entries as the year progressed. Measuring 11 inches by 5.5 inches it contains 96 pages and is approximately 80% complete. He also includes a record of his expenses month by month. The cover is in good condition considering its age 100 years and the pages are all intact. His handwriting is legible. Edward S. Schwantes was born in Wisconsin in 1893 his parents came from Germany in the mid-19th century later his family moved to Clark County in Washington. He kept this journal in 1917 when he was 24 years of age. Although it records many things that took place in his life that year its focus is his courting of a young woman names Olga. Casual research has not turned up very much biographical information on Schwantes. We know he served in the U.S. Army and was discharged as a Private but the service years are not known. He is also recorded years later as a building contractor. He died in 1975 in Salem. However did he get the girl The answer to that lays below. Schwantes is a labourer in the Ridgefield WA area. He worked in carpentry agriculture and a variety of odd jobs: "Worked in the woods all a.m. To town in the p.m. and took in cream & brought back grass seed. To library in evening". Jan 25 1917; "Butchered old sow in the a.m. cut wood the rest of the day. Sent for 50 ¢ jar of Jacksons Influx Hair Grower & and one cake of soft Jacksons medicated soap - 25 ¢" Jan 29 1917. In February there is the first mention of 'Olga': ". took Olga home after church and found out some of her troubles. God help you Olga to win out in your undertakings. God only knows how much I would like to help you and I'm praying for you all the time Olga. I would like to do more and would do anything in my power to comfort and help you and protect you if only I dared to and I hope some day I will dare to . " Feb 18 1917. The relationship appeared to be blossoming over time: ". Had the pleasure of taking Olga home after church again and found out that her folks didn't object to my keeping company with her anymore." Mar 18 1917. He notes her birthday and his gift-giving ability: ". took Olga home after church her 19th birthday and all I could give her was love; it seemed I didn't have enough of that to satisfy her ." July 8 1917. Throughout the year he reports daily on his work whether cutting wood grubbing clearing trees shrubs stumps and rubbish from a site often a prelude to construction building and construction work etc. References to he and Olga continue throughout the year charting ups and downs. His journal also contains a detailed list of monthly receipts and expenses. And in the end did he get the girl Yes - research indicates that an Olga was born in 1898 in Scappoose moved in Ridgefield when she was about 16 in 1919 she married Edward Scwhantes and they were married for 56 years until his death in 1975. During the WW2 Edward and their sons were in the army and Olga worked as a welder in shipyards. One of their sons Paul was killed in action in the Philippines in November 1944. Olga passed away in Salem in 1996 at the age of 98. This is a wonderful looking into the life of an ordinary young man growing up in early 20th century America. His entries are well written and detailed. They give a social historian an excellent window into life in this time and place. The detailed information about receipts and expenses certainly help confirm other outside information about the economics of life at that time.; Manuscript; 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF; 20TH CENTURY; 1910s; WW1; CLARK COUNTY; WASHINGTON; WISCONSIN; EDWARD S. May 4th 1880 thusly 28 to 35 years old over the writings of Plymouth Massachusetts.
