The book and its contents are in generally clean condition. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some light bumping rubbing and wear along with light fraying. The lettering on the spine of the book is noticeably rubbed. The text pages are generally clean though noticeably toned and brittle. The front endpaper has missing bits where the side stapling of the book has damaged the paper. Illustrated throughout. "Phineas Taylor Barnum July 5 1810 – April 7 1891 was an American showman businessman and politician remembered for promoting celebrated hoaxes and for founding the Barnum & Bailey Circus 1871–2017 with James Anthony Bailey. He was also an author publisher and philanthropist though he said of himself: "I am a showman by profession . And all the gilding shall make nothing else of me". According to his critics his personal aim was "to put money in his own coffers." He is widely credited with coining the adage "There's a sucker born every minute" usiness owner in his early twenties and founded a weekly newspaper before moving to New York City in 1834. In 1897 Bentwich led a group of 21 including the writer Israel Zangwill on a tour of holy sites and new settlements in Palestine on behalf of the Maccabaeans and in 1911 he acquired land for settlement at Gezer near Ramleh on behalf of the Maccabean Land Company. He later became president of the Maccabaeans. Bentwich was a founder of the British Zionist Federation in 1899. From 1916 to 1918 he served on the Zionist political advisory committee under Chaim Weizmann.
