1847 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT INTRACONTINENTAL TRAVEL DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A YOUNG WOMAN TRAVELING FROM NORWICH TO NEW YORK TO CLEVELAND TO PHILADELPHIA TO NEW YORK ALL BY THE CANAL NETWORK ESTABLISHED IN THE PRIOR 20 YEARS
NORWICH CONNECTICUT INTRA CONTINENTAL USA. Good. 1847. On offer is a rare handmade travel journal dating from early 19th century America. The paper volume is composed of 16 pages hand stitched inside a heavier paper cover. The small volume is in good condition and all pages are intact. There is some discolouration due to age but it does not affect the handwriting. The volume measures 6.5 inches by 4.25 inches and is approximately 50% complete. The journal is written in 1847 by a woman named Betsy Allen. Her home is recorded as Norwich which could refer to Norwich CT as her journey begins by travelling to New York City. Allen travelled in a great loop from New York City up the Hudson River and into the Erie Canal. She passed through Buffalo and sailed on to Cleveland OH. From Cleveland she travelled south by canal boat to Ellsworth OH arriving on July 22th. She stayed in Ellsworth until Oct 19th. Daily entries often take the form of a single line or comment: "Left Norwich landing for New York sailed all day slow and sure come to New York" July 7; "7 o'clock came to Rochester" July 16; ". went into Capt Allen's boat Buffalo early in morning" July 19; "50¢ sail out for Cleveland" July 20; On Oct 19th she left Ellsworth in the company of her father and 5 other women and began a remarkable trip back to the east coast via the Ohio and Pennsylvania canal systems. This canal route was a complex transportation system that included canals dams locks tow paths aqueducts and viaducts. Construction of this network began in the early 1820's and continued for the next several decades. She travelled through places like Petersburgh Bridgewater and Lowry. Eventually she reached Pittsburgh. From Pittsburgh she followed the canal through places like Johnstown and Holidaysburgh crossing over the Juniata River by means of a rope ferry. She crossed the Susquehanna River by an aqueduct eventually arriving at Philadelphia after passing through Harrisburg. At Philadelphia she boarded a steam ship for New York City and then Norwich on Oct 27th. She offers more details in her comments during this portion of her trip: "Left Ellsworth for home. Got a cup of coffee and dinner at Mr. Speers in Petersburgh . put up early at Mr.Wells four miles from Bridgewater fare not very good" Oct 19; ". passed through 16 locks in the forenoon. Nothing particular this afternoon only the passage through the tunnel this is a piece of art." Oct 21; ". crossed the Juniata while eating by means of a rope ferry" Oct 23. This is an absolutely fascinating journey and her description spare at times provides an excellent catalogue of the canals and locks that she traversed. It is all the more remarkable because this is a woman making the trip and she obviously came from a family with the means to afford such a trip. By 1900 the canals essentially ceased to operate as railroads took over as the preferred way to move people and goods. However the canals played a vital role in opening up the interior to move settlers west and bring raw materials and crops east to the growing cities of New York and Philadelphia. Tacoma Washington Usa. Good with no dust jacket. 1930. Softcover. On offer is a delightful collection containing a school aged girls pocket diary and a collection of her handmade artwork. The diary and artwork were created by Betty Jean legal birth name: Andrina Elizabeth Willison b.1920 of Tacoma Washington. Betty Jean was the third of five children born to Andrew and Olive Derrickson Willison. She was in elementary school at the time she kept this diary but would go on to graduate from Stadium High School and George Washington University. In 1942 Betty Jean would marry Lloyd Garrison 1917-2007 in Palm Beach Florida where Lloyd was stationed with the US Navy. They divorced in California in 1971. Unfortunately we were unable to trace the rest of Willisons life. Betty Jean kept her diary in 1930 and from March 10 through May 1st. While brief her entries paint a quite lovely picture of the life of this 10-year-old girl with her family friends and at school Some excerpts: Last night I went up to Virginias house. I made the cutest garage for a little car and she made a little Gas Station March 12. Saturday we played baseball and every time I was up they caught my fly. So it made it very bad for me Mar 15. Last night I went to the Symphony concert. My cousin played in it. Her name was Virginia Willison Mar 20. Last night I played Jacks. I was in my 60s when my sister was only in her 30s April 19. Yesterday we played house. I was the maid Jessie was the father and my cousin was the mother and my little sister was the child April 27. Along with her sweet diary are several pieces of Betty Jeans artwork some of which are signed by her most being forms of paper applique. Altogether it is a charming diary and collection of a childs artwork highlighting the daily life of a happy and secure school age child at the outset of the Great Depression. The diary consists of a small top-bound notebook measuring 5 inches by 3 inches. It contains only 24 pages all with diary entries with evidence that a number of pages had been removed at the back of the notebook. The covers are in good condition as is the binding. MINNEAPOLIS MINNESOTA. Good. 1944. On offer is a superb 1944 diary of a young woman working in Minneapolis MN during 1944. The daily diary measures 7 1/2 inches by 5 inches contains about 380 pages is virtually 100% complete. The hard cover and pages are in very good condition. Included in the diary are 2 unidentified pictures of individuals in uniform and a number of items attached to individual pages. The writing is quite legible. The writer is Betty Jean Lenz. When she begins her diary she is 22 years old and working at an unidentified business in Minneapolis. She lives with her parents. The diary details her everyday happenings 1944. Her entries can be long and remark on family activities and her fairly busy social life. She certainly enjoys the cinema and sees a movie many evenings of each week sometimes with her mother and other times with various friends. A film historian would delight in this year-long catalogue of 1944 movies. "Got up at 9:00 A.M. Dressed and had breakfast. Went downtown early to pay my Insurance. Went to work. Valentines Day today. Got a letter from Wally. Had supper with Margie and Gracia. Gracia met me after work and we went to Curley's. Some soldiers and sailors tried to pick us up but no go. Got to bed about 12:00 midnight" Feb 14. ". Went downtown about noon to go to Orpheum to see the Andrews Sisters in person. . Real good. . Mom and I went for a walk and ended up at Emma's. . . Played cards. Got to bed at 12:30 AM" May 14 ". Helen Griffin came up to see me. Gracia didn't leave for NY after all - she got a job at Curley's. I went bowling for Dayton league . I'm on Tally-Ho team. We lost all games to Nylon team. Margie's announcement engagement notice clipped to the page was in paper tonight" Sept 12. On April 6th she changes jobs to begin working at Daytons University Store - the major retailing department store in Minneapolis. On Aug 13th she and a friend take their vacation in New York City. Her diary is replete with references to well-known points of interest. For example: Marshall Field & Co Chicago Aug 14 Rockefeller Center Aug 16 Jack Dempsey's restaurant Aug 18. A constant theme throughout the diary is her relationship with Wally Spriestersbach. The year begins with her being engaged to him but by June they had broken up. They continued to see each other and rite each other and by year end were still going out together. She is certainly aware of events happening on the world stage: "Rome was captured by allies. One down & two to go - Berlin & Tokyo" June 4; "Allied invasion started. Allied troops landed in France. So glad it finally started" June 6. She notes the servicemen they met and good times enjoyed with them: "Met two "Jewish" soldiers Abe and Sal. Played cards and had a lot of fun" Aug 14; " . Met 2 soldiers after the show: Bill Grever and John Willix. Went to Cafe Metropol and Candlelight Lounge with them" Aug 16. This is a superb example of detailed diary-keeping. A historian or researcher looking at life during the war years will find this to be a goldmine of data.
