‎At the Bible in George Yard Lombard Street: Luke Hinde 1756. First edition. Small octavo pp viii 198 publisher's advert 2 pages a little used internally some pages with slight tears to the gutter margin contemporary full calf rubbed worn at the corners raised bands to the spine but no label. With the signature of an early owner John Gillett on the rear endpaper. With the further Quaker signatures of Joseph Gillett of Somerton and William S. Clark. Samuel Bownas was born in 1676 to Quaker parents although his father died when he was a month old. His father had been a Friend during the time of Quaker persecution with meetings of the Friends having been held in his house. In 1696 his life was changed. At this time he was apprenticed to Samuel Parrott a Friend from Briggflatts meeting in Sedbergh. Attending meeting for worship another Friend Anne Wilson rose in worship and accused him of being no better for his attendance of meeting for worship and that would prove perilous for him "in the end". Afterwards he felt called to preach and read the Bible with greater ease. His famous "A Description of the Qualifications Necessary to a Gospel Minister" was first printed in 1750. Having first journeyed to Scotland he sailed for America aboard the Josiah John Sowden master. He landed two months later in Potuxant River Maryland about 29 May 1702 and continued his work. Bownas died at Bridport Dorset on 2 April 1753. First Edition. Full Leather. Good. Luke Hinde Hardcover‎

‎* Josef (Jupp) Elze (* 14. Dezember 1939 in Köln; ? 20. Juni 1968 ebenda)[1] war ein deutscher Profiboxer im Mittelgewicht. Seine Profikarriere begann im September 1961 im Kölner Eisstadion mit einem KO-Sieg über Peter Faust. Am 30. Mai 1964 besiegte er, ebenfalls in Köln, in seinem achtzehnten Profikampf Manfred Hass und wurde somit Deutscher Meister im Mittelgewicht. Im Mai 1966 trat er in Berlin gegen Nino Benvenuti um die Europameisterschaft an, verlor jedoch durch technisches KO in der vierzehnten Runde. Vor 25.000 Zuschauern verteidigte er am 2. September 1966 im Müngersdorfer Stadion seinen Deutschen Meistertitel gegen Peter ?de Aap? Müller. Bereits in der zweiten Runde entschied Elze den Kampf gegen seinen Herausforderer durch KO. Müller beendete nach diesem Kampf seine Profikarriere. Im Jahr darauf konnte Elze seinen Deutschen Meister-Gürtel gegen Horst Wieczorek durch einen KO-Sieg in der siebten Runde erneut erfolgreich verteidigen. Am 12. Juni 1968 unternahm Elze den zweiten Versuch, Europameister im Mittelgewicht zu werden. Er stieg gegen Juan Carlos Duran in den Ring, den er zuvor im April 1965 bereits nach Punkten besiegt hatte. In der fünfzehnten Runde wurde Jupp Elze am Hinterkopf getroffen und ging zu Boden. Kurz nachdem er wieder aufgestanden war und seine Aufgabe signalisiert hatte, wurde er bewusstlos und fiel ins Koma. Trotz einer sofortigen Notoperation am Gehirn starb Elze acht Tage später an einer Hirnblutung in der Universitätsklinik in Köln-Lindenthal. Eine Obduktion ergab, dass Jupp Elze mit drei verschiedenen Substanzen gedopt war, unter anderem mit Methamphetamin. Sein damaliger Manager war Jean Löring. In die Geschichte ging er vorrangig als erster deutscher Profisportler ein, der an Doping-Folgen starb. Sein Grab befindet sich auf dem Kölner Ostfriedhof.(Quelle Wikipedia)‎

‎* Joey Giardello (* 16. Juli 1930 als Carmine Orlando Tilelli in Brooklyn, New York; ? 2. September 2008 in Cherry Hill, New Jersey) war ein US-amerikanischer Boxer. Konterboxer Giardello wurde 1948 Profi und boxte hauptsächlich in seinem langjährigen Wohnort Philadelphia. 1952 und 1953 gewann er zwei von drei spektakulären Kämpfen gegen den zukünftigen Hall-of-Fame Boxer Billy Graham, hatte aber während der gesamten 1950er-Jahre Schwierigkeiten, an große Kämpfe zu kommen. Im Jahr 1959 fanden die ersten zwei von insgesamt vier Kämpfen gegen Dick Tiger statt; beide gewannen dabei je eines der Duelle nach Punkten. In seinem ersten großen Titelkampf gelang ihm am 20. April 1960 gegen Gene Fullmer nur ein Unentschieden. 1963 besiegte er den 42-jährigen Sugar Ray Robinson und bekam einen dritten Kampf gegen Dick Tiger, der inzwischen die Mittelgewichtsweltmeisterschaft gewonnen hatte. Am 7. Dezember 1963 gewann er im Alter von 33 Jahren durch Punktsieg gegen Tiger und errang damit den Titel. Er verteidigte ihn gegen Rubin Carter, unterlag aber 1965 im vierten Aufeinandertreffen Tiger und verlor den Titel. 1967 beendete er seine Boxkarriere. 1993 fand Giardello Aufnahme in die International Boxing Hall of Fame. ‎Libre penseur, patriote et démocrate, Pierre du Calvet (1735-1786) fut un formidable pamphlétaire à dénoncer l'arbitraire des autorités coloniales et à revendiquer l'instauration des libertés fondamentales, des droits constitutionnels et de la démocratie parlementaire au Québec. Arrivé en Amérique en 1758, cet immigrant huguenot, devenu négociant prospère et nommé juge de paix dans le district de Montréal, osera non seulement dénoncer le despotisme des autorités coloniales mais aussi proposer des réformes démocratiques essentielles au développement de sa patrie d'adoption. Habité par l esprit des Lumières, ce combattant des libertés passera près de trois ans en prison, sans connaître les motifs de sa détention et sans subir le procès qu il ne cessait pourtant de réclamer. Libéré en 1783, Du Calvet décide de porter sa cause en Angleterre en réunissant ses écrits de prison dans deux ouvrages, "The Case of Peter du Calvet" et "Appel à la justice de l'État", qui suscitèrent de vifs débats tant en Angleterre et en Europe qu'au Canada. Son Appel à la justice de l'État, publié intégralement ici pour la première fois depuis sa parution à Londres en 1784, constitue le premier manifeste de nos libertés démocratiques et contribua à l'avènement de l'Acte constitutionnel de 1791, octroyant une Chambre d'Assemblée élective à travers laquelle nos premiers représentants amorcèrent l expérience démocratique dans la vallée du Saint-Laurent. En publiant cette biographie de Pierre du Calvet et son "Appel à la justice de l'État", de même que vingt-deux lettres inédites du prisonnier à ses geôliers, l'auteur et l'éditeur du Septentrion ont voulu rendre hommage à celui qui eut le courage de pourfendre la corruption politique de son temps et de réclamer l'application des droits démocratiques dans la province de Québec Voir le sommaire sur photos jointes.‎
