PLAINVIEW ARKANSAS OUACHITA NATIONAL FOREST. Good. 1929. On offer is a young high school student's diary that follows part of her experiences growing up in rural Arkansas. Measuring about 6in by 3 1/2 in this leather bound 5-year diary spans the years 1929 to 1933. The cover is in good condition with some wear marks and the clasp works. The entries for 1929 are nearly complete 1930 about 45% and only a couple of days each in 1931 and 1933. Geraldine Henry lives in the small community of Plainview Arkansas and attends Plainview High School. From the context of some entries a reader could surmise that she is 16 or 17 years old. The entries themselves are full of the ordinary day-to-day events of a young high school student: "Rained like everything. I went to school and wished it would stop as Plainview could play Ola Arkansas on Wed" Jan 22 1929 "Went down to Holiman's drug store and spent the afternoon most all my friends were down there." Feb 2 1929 "had a good time at school today .Train time Corinne and I went to Post Office. Heard the news. If you ever want to hear gossip go to Post Office." Mar 21 1929 ". Today was my birthday Lathelle gave me a compact and lip stick. Corine gave party tonight and she gave me handkerchief and garter set" Nov 22 1929. The entry for Sept 13 contains a small annotated photograph. The Memoranda section has a number of autograph entries similar to a high school yearbook. 1952 ORIGINAL SAD SIGNIFICANT MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY THE WIFE OF A MAN SLOWLY INEXORABLY DRAGGED DOWN TO HIS DEATH BY ALZHEIMERS
PAINESVILLE OHIO. Good. 1952. On offer is a rather poignant journal of a woman caring for her elderly and ill husband in the final year of his life. It measures 8 inches by 6.75 inches and contains 200 pages. It 30% complete. The cover has wear marks but the binding is intact as are all pages. The handwriting is clear and legible. The author of the journal is Geraldine Brown wife of Fayette Brown. Fayette Brown was born in 1883 and in the 1930's was President of the Interlake Iron Co. in Toledo OH. The journal covers the period from May 10th to Oct 20th 1952. At 70 years of age Fayette was suffering from Alzheimer's and his wife was caring for him at home. The couple lived in Painesville Ohio and had several grown children. The diary opens with Geraldine writing about her motivation and inspiration to keep this journal: "This book came from Aunt Alice's when we closed her house. There were so many of her diaries which have inspired me to start this as in the future there may be some events which would be helpful to refer to especially as to dates." May 10. Little was known about Alzheimers at that time. She referred to it as his 'dark cloud'. Despite that challenge she is devoted to her husband and that love comes through in comments such as these: "Austin came out about four. Thinks that I should get away. I know that it is the only sensible thing to do. The only thing I want to do is to go and see Ralph and Fan and the baby. Would prefer waiting a month but he seemed insistent that I go immediately so will call Mrs. Shevel and see when she can come. Had long talk with Hall about his work. He does not feel it is too much for him. Austin in his talk with him evidently suggested a night nurse and for Hall to take over the day but that is entirely unnecessary now. As long as I am here do not want any one else around in day time besides it's too confusing for Fayette. I have a feeling that the boys thing there should be some one else here because of me. They just do not understand how much it means to me to be able to do something for Fayette and as long as he realized that I am with him no one else is going to take over. Besides what would I do. I don't want to be any other place and am not happy when I am away." May 20; "Fayette had a wonderful night didn't stir until 7:30 this morning then went back to sleep until 9:30. He is standing up under the heat remarkably well. The only change I find is I have to help him almost entirely with his meals and when he walks he drags his feet." June 16. In spite of the challenges of helping her ill husband she also notes happenings in the wider community. The general election campaign is underway and one of her daughters is working in it: ". my heart aches for her. Politics is certainly a dirty business I have to have any of mine in it and yet what will happen to the country if those with ideals and the will to work hard " July 11. Eisenhower won the 1952 election to her approval. Alzheimers Disease places an enormous strain on the caregiver and immediate family. What comes through in this diary is Geraldine's love and care for her husband as this incurable illness slowly progresses in him. Her last entry was in September: ". I thought when I got back from Bennington that Fayette seemed stronger mentally but the last few days he hasn't seemed as well. Maybe it is the change of personalities. We weighed him this morning and he was only 164. Our first snow and hail last night and this morning. Much too early. Katherine is on her vacation and Ward is here taking her place." Oct 20. Fayette Brown passed away 3 months later. Geraldine lived another 29 years passing away at the age of 91. This is an excellent glimpse into the daily life of someone caring for a loved one who is suffering from the ravages of Alzheimers. Questo libro autobiografico tenta un'impresa forse sin troppo audace: esplorare il cervello (e il cuore) di un padre molto amato, Antonello Gerbi, storico delle idee prestato alla Banca Commerciale, nato nel 1904 e scomparso nel 1976. Ma esplorare come? Ad esempio ripubblicando il suo opus magnum sulla presunta inferiorità delle Americhe secondo il fior fiore della cultura europea; oppure promuovendo raccolte di suoi articoli dimenticati; o ancora, scrivendo di lui in numerose circostanze. Un padre importante, dunque, e un figlio 'normale', la cui formazione - qui raccontata - ha preso le mosse proprio alla fine degli anni Settanta, con una decisa svolta dal giornalismo finanziario a quello culturale e allo studio della storia contemporanea. Ne è valsa la pena? L'autore pensa di sì, confortato anche dal fatto che Gerbi sr ha suscitato sin dagli anni Venti l'ammirazione di personaggi come Carlo Rosselli, Giuseppe Prezzolini, Luigi Einaudi, Raffaele Mattioli, Giuseppe Antonio Borgese e Benedetto Croce, nonché l'interesse di Antonio Gramsci, in carcere. Nella prima parte, il protagonista è Antonello, attraverso scampoli di sue lettere dal Perù (1938-1947) ai due fratelli, fuggiti a loro volta negli Stati Uniti in seguito alla legislazione antiebraica. Nella seconda l'autore racconta cosa ha fatto in concreto per valorizzare il lascito intellettuale del padre: un lavoro durato 45 anni e forse non ancora concluso.

1865. Hardcover. Good. The West Point account book of William Gerhard while a cadet 1865-1869 and 6 documents relating to his military service. William Gerhard 1847-1914 of Philadelphia was the son of Benjamin Gerhard 1811-1864 and Anna Sergeant Gerhard 1815-1873. He married Sally Lyle Howell 1855-1879 and they had one child Arthur Howell Gerhard 1877-1949. He was appointed a cadet on Sept. 8 1864 and was at West Point from June 1865 through June 1869 when he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieut in the 9th United States Cavalry on June 15. He served in Texas from Oct. 1869 until he resigned on September 30 1874 having been promoted to 1st Lieut on Nov. 19 1873. Following his military service he was a manufacturer of chains and anchors in Ardmore Pa. and then a senior member of Empire Chain Works Philadelphia Pa. The account book is the original calf-bound book issued by West Point showing Gerhard's monthly expenses for items from the commisary and other expenses for the 4 years he was a cadet. With handwritten paper label on the front cover: "Cadet William Gerhard June 1865." The additional documents consist of: 1 a handwritten letter reporting "Gen. Stanton and dated Feb. 22 1866 sic; 4 Gerhard's appointment as Second Lieut. in the 9th Regiment of Cavalry signed by Secretary of War John A. Rawlins and dated June 24 1869; 5 a leave of absence for 3 months for Gerhard signed by Adjutant General E. D. Townsend and dated June 23 1869; and 6 Gerhard's promotion to 1st Lieut. of the 9th Regiment of Cavalry signed by Secretary of War Wm. W. Belknap and dated Nov. 29 1873. The handwritten letter is unsigned but attributed to James Cornell Biddle 1835-1898 which is consistent with the letter. The account book is in Good Condition: front board is detached but present; lacking leather from spine; pages are clean and tight. Documents are clean and solid; light folds some of which are starting to separate. hardcover
