Nel borgo marinaro di Riva Trigoso, sulla riviera ligure, fonti parrocchiali attestano la presenza dal XVII secolo di una famiglia di nome Lena, i cui membri sono attivi nel piccolo cabotaggio e nel commercio locale. Presto però la microstoria della famiglia e del borgo si incrocia con la storia globale mediterranea e poi atlantica: dalla partecipazione a grandi spedizioni di pesca sulle coste nord-africane in convogli di imbarcazioni locali tipiche (i leudi), fino al possesso di grandi velieri adibiti al commercio vinicolo euro-mediterraneo e - in parallelo - alla conquista dei massimi vertici della marina mercantile sulle rotte transatlantiche. A segnare il salto di scala dell'attività negli anni Ottanta dell'Ottocento è Paolo Lena, grazie all'accumulo di un piccolo capitale come marinaio nei piroscafi che trasportano migranti, che gli vale il soprannome Merica. Merica diventa così il nome della sua famiglia allargata che coincide con un'azienda di dimensioni crescenti, l'una e l'altra improntate a un modello arcaico, patriarcale e gerarchico. Sono caratteristiche che dureranno nel tempo, attraversando il passaggio dalla vela al vapore, dal legno al ferro, fino al declino e all'estinzione dell'intera compagine. La conservazione di un eccezionale patrimonio documentario familiare ha permesso agli autori la ricostruzione di questa storia sull'arco di oltre centocinquant'anni, con una speciale attenzione alle transizioni sociali e ai conflitti culturali, alle persistenze e alle lente metamorfosi delle mentalità: un capitolo rilevante e poco noto della modernizzazione italiana tra Ottocento e Novecento.
