In queste parole, c'è molto del carattere di Elisabetta d'Austria, che tutti ricordano come Sissi: la fuga dal mondo, l'inquietudine, l'insopprimibile bisogno di sentirsi diversa dagli altri. I soggiorni meranesi del 1870-72 videro protagonista una donna sportiva e al culmine della sua bellezza, che già sentiva come una minaccia l'avanzare del tempo. Tra i monti del Trentino-Alto Adige Sissi cercava innanzitutto la quiete. La trovò, ma il suo desiderio di evadere si dimostrò più forte e per diciassette anni rimase lontana da questa regione. Ricomparve solo nel 1889, dopo aver visitato quasi tutta l'Europa, invecchiata, ammalata e distrutta dal più grande dei dolori: il suicidio del figlio Rodolfo. Il Tirolo si rivelò ancora una volta un rifugio accogliente e Sissi decide di tornarvi in altre due occasioni, nel 1894 e nel 1897, soggiornando a Madonna di Campiglio e al lago di Carezza, località turistiche che devono in parte a lei la loro fama successiva. Un anno dopo, venne uccisa a Ginevra da un anarchico italiano e per lei, che desiderava diventare invisibile agli occhi del mondo, si prepara l'immortalità. Questo libro accompagna il lettore in un affascinante viaggio nel tempo, seguendo le "tracce" di Sissi in Trentino Alto Adige e in tutta Europa e analizza le ragioni del perdurare di un mito che pare destinato a non morire mai.
