‎1932 Sea Scout’s Diary Chronicling His Journey around Cape Horn and His Life As a Busy Teen Upon His Return to Wisconsin‎

‎Menomonie Wisconsin AT Sea. Good with no dust jacket. 1932. Softcover. On offer is a superb journal of a young Wisconsin man's 1932 adventure around Cape Horn as a Sea Scout and his experience speaking about his trip upon his return. In 1932 diarist Harold Jack Milnes 1915-1995 who went by Jack lived in the Lake View area of Menomonie Wisconsin. He was a 16 year old Sea Scout at the time of his writing. The Sea Scouts is part of the international Scouting movement that focuses on boating and maritime skills. As part of their program Milnes and some fellow Sea Scouts had an opportunity to travel from the midwest by train to San Francisco and board the steamer SS West Mahwah. They sailed with the West Mahwah south to Panama traversed the Panama Canal and continued on a journey that took them completely around the South American continent via Cape Horn. After high school Milnes attended the University of Wisconsin Stout Campus. Upon graduation he became a teacher married Marjory Steiner Milnes and served as a Sergeant in World War 2. Upon his death Milnes bequeathed $1.4 million to the University of Wisconsin-Stout in the form of The Steiner Milnes Scholarship. Milnes keeps a very detailed record of his trip for a teen boy who was very busy experiencing the world for the first time. His first entry is on May 25 1932 and it reads: “Omaha Made friends with the Conductor and Brakeman. Hit every bump in the road but will sleep better tonight”. Two days later he boards his ship the SS West Mahwah where he writes: “Arrived San Francisco and went directly to the docks. Sail on the West Mahwah which weighs 3586 tons empty and 9000 tons loaded” May 27. They slipped May 31st and his great adventure was underway. He was no mere passenger but worked standing watches polishing brass washing and darning etc. On their trip south to Panama he experienced their first storms and sea-sickness. They traveled across the Caribbean and then south: “Scott and I moved in together. We put a bunch of new shelves in and some new hangers. We have to live in suit cases partly for the rest of the voyage. Today we crossed a streak of muddy water in the ocean that extended as far as we could see. said it was the mud from the mouth of the Amazon” July 1. Soon he crossed the Equator and was initiated into the Kingdom of Neptune as sailors have been for centuries: “Initiation today. We were led out to King Neptune blindfolded. He said a lot of hooey and then gave us to the doctor their chaperone from context He covered us with monochrome and then the barber shaved us. He painted our face with grease and for good measure covered the rest of us with it. Then we had the kiss the holy stone. They pushed us backwards into a tank of water and called it quits” July 4. They stopped at harbours such as Bahia Rio de Janeiro Montevideo and Buenos Aires touring around and taking in what had to be exciting and exotic sights sounds and smells: “Doc Thompson Mr. Peterson Jack & I went ashore we went through one of the open markets Then we took an elevator up about 500 ft to the town. We rode a street car to the end & back for a cent and a half. Doc bought a monkey two marmosets and two turtles. He gave then to me to take home” July 9. The voyage north up the west coast of South America was uneventful and they arrived in San Francisco on Sept 13th. He spent a couple of days there before beginning his trip west: “.We saw the tallest man in the world. He was 8 feet 91/2 inches tall. . Saw . Bing Crosby in person at the Fox Theatre” Sept 14. He makes regular notations about weather and weather phenomena. By late September he is back in school recounting his great adventure. He also speaks to several other groups. The balance of the entries for October through December are full of the busy day-to-day events of a teenage boy's like school girls activities with friends. An example of a post-trip entry follows: “I talked at the East School Mothers Club. Caucus for class officers. I’m Pres. Jeanette Vice Pres…I did a good job of engineering. Hope it works. Bud Paul Janet Marlys Red Jeanette Hanson and Stewart were over. We sang till 9: 30. Had a dandy time. Are going to form a singing group” Oct 18. A geographer or historian would find this a very interesting description of ports and routes especially through the eyes of a 16 year old. It is great plot material for a short story Researchers looking for climate data and observations tied to specific periods and/or geographic regions would find this data to be very useful in looking at trend lines or making comparisons with weather patterns today. This is especially the case as Milnes traveled a long distance over a very large and diverse area. This travel diary measures 5.5 inches by 4.5 inches and contains 83 pages plus memoranda. It is about 90% complete. The leather cover is in good condition and all pages are intact. The handwriting is clear and legible. Overall G. ; Manuscripts; 24mo 5" - 6" tall; 83 pages; Signed by Author . paperback‎

‎HARRIET ?‎

‎1929 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A YOUNG LOS ANGELES GIRL AND THEN AS A WOMAN NOTING THE TRAGEDIES OF HER LATER LIFE‎

‎LOS ANGELES CALIFORNIA CA. Good. 1929. On offer is an original rather charming at first glance 1929 manuscript diary handwritten by a young Los Angeles County California girl named Harriet. The diary begins in January 1929 and her writings are for the most part during 8th Grade. Typical of the time and the place Harriet and friends enjoy sports trips to Redondo Beach with Grandma and Grandpa and life is near idyllic. However Harriet writes in spurts of several weeks and then is quiet and then starts again so 1929 has about 200 entries but it is the later entries that bring the reality of life's vagaries. Coming back to the diary at key terrible moments in 1930s 1940s and 1950s that stand out: "October 16th 1949. Daddy died Sunday morning 7 A.M. at Rochester Minnesota at the St. Mary's Hospital. It was a beautiful sunny morning. They killed him at least they did hurry his death but for the best before his time by giving him too much anaesthetics. For 4 nights and 4 days he did not sleep. His poor heart was going like a trip hammer and he was constantly moving and working with anything he could touch on the bed. It was terrible. But not till it was too late did I know what they were doing. When he was dying I read the chart and then I knew. But 3 day before he told me they were doing him "dirt"….Then under this she writes. "Now it is December of 1952. I know that Joe had to go. He couldn't have lived very long and perhaps he didn't know how ill he was. They did what they could to help him. However he did know me when I spoke to him on that terrible morning. His eyes were drawn and half closed. He put his free arm around my neck and kissed my cheek and the last words he spoke were for a priest he said "Monkski" I said "you want a priest" and he faintly said yes. A priest is available at that place at any time. They even have a good sized church in that enormous building. Two nights before I had called a priest for him so this time I didn't call the priest. I should have done so. I regret I didn't. But God loves Joe. God loves us all." And then comes 1951: "April 9th 1951. This morning I find a lump walnut size on the right side of my neck. I'm worried. Dr's say operate. I can't……April 9th 1952. I have many lumps now and some on the left side. I ask God to help me. I can be made well if God wills it." Those are her last entries and one cannot help but wonder what happened to this woman. Here are some snippets of the Grade 8 year and a 1933 trip her family took to Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon in 1933: 1929 "January 1st Stella and I are starting our diary. Grandpa took Junior Hazel and I to the Rose Parade. I spent the evening at Hazel's. Had a good time. Betty was there too. School starts tomorrow." "January 11th Well I expected mama but she didn't come so tomorrow we are going to climb Alpine Hill and take our lunch. Hazel Alta and I are going and Betty." "February 25th Today is Sunday. We went to Pomona to the dump. Had a lot of fun." "March 4th Today we heard Herbert Hoover talk over the radio at school. We missed some sewing." "March 9th Today is Saturday we went out to the Glendale playhouse and saw Pollyanna. I got a typewriter…" "April 13th Got acquainted with 2 girls at Grandma's. Went down to the beach at Redondo with grandpa and grandma. We left grandpa at the beach and walked home. Trouble. I have a very heavy cold." "April 24th Played with Hazel again this eve. An army airplane fell over on Ave. 50. Drove over to see it. Took Mr. and Mrs. Lawson. Fell on an auto. Pilot of plane had broken shoulder." "July 14th Today I am at Stella's. Stella and I went to the Golden Gate show. The name of it was "The Squall." "July 21st Phyllis and Jean and myself went to the show in the afternoon and saw Mae West in "She Done Him Wrong." "March 10th 1933. 5155. A severe earthquake lasting all night with recurring shocks for 6 months." "September 4th & 5th 1933. We left this morning for the World's fair at 7:00. We drove 400 some miles. The heat was awful. Stopped at the 7-V Ranch….Today we saw red rocks and Indians with their Angora goats. We could see the Painted Desert in the distance. It was still hot but not as hot as yesterday. Stayed at Gallup N. Mexico." "September 9th 1933. Today we came through Missouri. We came through St. Louis. It is a dirty town. We crossed the Miss. River. It was hot. Stayed at Green Gables in Illinois. Mama telephoned her friend at St. Louis a girl named Rosina Frantz." "September 16th 1933. Today Charles Starr came and stayed with us. Grandma and mama and Charles went to the restaurant to eat. Fair in eve." "September 18th 1933. Today we left Chicago and got in Charleston in eve. We are staying in the Charleston Hotel. Not so good." "September 24th 1933. Sunday stayed in a wormey cabin out of Louisville Kentucky. Bad Night. Hot. Worms hanging from the trees and even in our cabins hanging." "September 26th 1933. Tuesday night we stayed in Montgomery Alabama. Had a terrible time. Drunk people next door. Talked loud all night. Had a terrible fight in morning. One woman broke the man's windshield on his car." "August 6th 1934. Today we started to Yellowstone. We drove 502 miles. We are going with the Searless's. It sure was hot. We are staying in Cedar City Utah." "August 9th & 10th 1934. We rode around and looked at some of the geysers and came home at noon. In evening we watched them dance at hotel….Today we rode around the loop. I got a ring in West thumb. We saw bear deer elk antelope buffalo moose coyote crane. We saw beautiful falls and grand canyons." "August 15th 1934. We left Yellowstone at 10:00 o'clock this morning. We stayed in Logan Utah. Not so hot." "August 30th 1934. Went to North rim of canyon and got caught on desert. Stayed in Hogan Indian house." "April 15th 1937. Grandpa died this morning about 3:40. He had been struck by a car at night two weeks before. Grandma will be alone now. She must come with us. Mama wants her and so does daddy and I." "May 7th 1949. Our dear little girl was born today at 8:55 A.M. I wanted a little girl. Frank said he wanted me to have what I wanted. I was very happy. I cried. Frank is very good to us. God bless each of us and our dear ones we love so much." November and December have no entries. The 5" x 6" book's cover is scuffed around the edges and the flap that once held it closed is torn up. ‎Harriet Sumner Shaw‎

‎1936 Diary of a 74-Year-Old Republican Who Dislikes Roosevelt and Loves Her Husband the Superintendent of the City Public Welfare Dept.‎

‎Pittsfield Massachusetts. Good with no dust jacket. 1936. Cloth. On offer is the diary of Mrs. Harriet Shaw 1861-1959 wife of Albert William Shaw 1861-1940 a prominent citizen of Berkshire Massachusetts. Harriet L. B. Sumner Shaw was born in Vermont. She settled in Pittsfield MA in 1880 where she married Albert William Shaw in 1882. They had four children: three sons and one daughter. Albert who was the superintendent of the Berkshire Public Welfare Department as well as being a banker and real estate investor and a member of the Freemasons. Harriet herself was a member of the First Church of Christ Daughters of the American Revolution and matron of a chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. Given Albert’s status within Berkshire the Great Depression did not impact the Shaw family. Rather Albert had his regular meetings with the “Bank Men” as Harriet calls them throughout 1936. Her children are grown and living their lives. Harriet has friends to the house goes out about town sends packages to her children has her children and grandchildren to visit. She reads attends meetings and keeps track of Albert’s whereabouts. Importantly Harriet is very interested in politics and 1936 was an election year. She comments on the Presidential election making her pro-Republican views quite well known. The following excerpts will give a flavour to her diary: “.Henry called at noon and so did Marion. Park & Marion returned yesterday from New Jersey where the had a fine time. Tonight we listened to President Roosevelt making a campaign speech in the guise of an address to Congress. It consisted of words. Congressman Treadway called it a ‘one ring circus’. D. A. R. Met today” Jan 3. “We went uptown this morn and I did some shopping for the house – new draperies for the house etc for the guest room. In the afternoon we went to Lebanon Springs and brought home four gallons of water. Had a nice ride. Albert gave me two lovely red rosebuds. I put all the clocks ahead tonight as daylight savings begins tomorrow. How I dislike it! ” Apr 25. “Light frost this morning. The second day of summer. Albert went out with the Bank Men. Mr. And Mrs. Herman Wood and Barbara from NM called this morn. Miss Campbell was with them. Albert and I went up to the Lake after supper. We sat up til 10pm to hear John Hamilton’s chairman of the Republican Party. He was very good” June 22. “.The Bank men came for Albert at 9 AM. After dinner Albert & I voted in the Primary and later went to the Donations Party.Only a few were there – it was so unpleasant.” Sept 15. “We went uptown this morn. Albert paid the taxes which amounted to considerable. I gave some coffee to the House of Mercy Bazaar. In the afternoon we went to Richmond and stopped at the Pravus but they were not at home. Park Marion and the children stopped here a few minutes” Oct 22. “We went uptown this morn and Albert did a lot of marketing as we expect Charlie tomorrow. Had a nap after dinner. Albert went to an Anti-Tuberculosis meeting this afternoon. We heard Ex Pres Hoover over the radio. Then we had the Halloween callers and gave them candy. It rained a little” Oct 30. “.Roosevelt is re-elected and I am disgusted! .” Nov 4. In the Memoranda section she keeps track of her expenses and accounts and lists the Christmas gifts she received. For a social historian this diary offers an excellent look into the world of the well-off during the depths of the Great Depression as well as providing a neat through-line about a Republican’s experience of an election year in which a Democratic candidate is the incumbent. This diary measures 6.0 inches by 4.5 inches and contains 365 pages. It is 100% complete. The red leather cover is in good condition as is the binding. The pages are intact and the handwriting is legible. Overall G. ; Manuscripts; 16mo 6" - 7" tall; 365 pages; Signed by Author . hardcover‎

A rugged individualist, an independent thinker, and a firm believer in free enterprise, he grew thousands of acres of crops, fed some 100,000 head of cattle, processed 800 head of cattle a day, and sold a portion of his meat through his store and restaurant." - dust jacket. [6], 7-145, [1] map. Chronology. Reproductions of photos in color and black and white. Clean, bright and unmarked with very light wear. Average wear to dust jacket now preserved in archival-grade Brodart. A quality copy of this inspiring American success story. Book‎
