‎Best Regards to Aida: the Defeats and Victories of a Music Man on Two Continents - 1st Edition/1st Printing‎

‎New York: Alfred A. Knopf. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1968. First Edition; First Printing. 1/4 Cloth. First edition/first printing in Very Good condition little sunning to top edges and soiling to fore-edges in Very Good lightly spine-faded dust-jacket. From the collection of Betty Anderson legendary art director of publisher Knopf in the late 20th century as evidenced by her small and unobtrusive inventory number; Best Regards to Aida: the Defeats and Victories of a Music Man on Two Continents tells the story of Heinsheimer a self-taught musician who in the early 1960s embarks on a daring and ultimately successful journey to perform Aida in Egypt and Buenos Aires two of the most notoriously difficult opera houses in the world. Heinsheimer's journey is not easy and he faces numerous obstacles from financial difficulties to public resistance. Yet he never gives up and in the end he is hailed as a musical hero by both audiences. This beautifully written and compelling book is a testament to the power of determination and faith in the face of adversity.; B&W Photographs; 8vo; FSA . Alfred A. Knopf hardcover‎

‎HELEN AND WILLIAM (BILL) ROSSAN‎

‎1952 - 1954 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT TRAVEL DIARY OF A MARRIED COUPLE OF AMERICAN SERVICE PERSONNEL TAKING ROAD TRIPS THROUGH RECONSTRUCTION ERA EUROPE‎

‎Europe. Very Good. 1952. On offer is an original post World War II manuscript travel diary handwritten by PFC Helen Rossan while she was stationed in Germany with her husband SFC William Bill. She wrote of three vacation trips they took through Europe and Scandinavia in 1952 1953 and 1954. She also wrote a couple of pages at the end of the book about her return trip home. Uniquely this is not an account of pre-planned touring and staying in beautiful hotels but more of a 'road trip' travelogue with all the ups and downs faced by independent travellers. They drove through Europe and were often plagued with flat tires and car trouble which usually resulted in epithets from husband Bill. They did not have much of a planned itinerary and looked for accommodations when they decided to stop for the night. They stayed at hotels or inns and at times with families. Helen wrote of staying at places that weren't too clean or without a bath and rarely did the accommodations have hot water. Yet they both enjoyed themselves immensely and the author wrote of the gorgeous scenery as they drove the countryside and described the many famous sights they visited. But she also wrote of the devastation caused by the war and the sometimes cool reception Americans received. Upon her arrival in England she wrote: "Tonight after all debarking passengers Beulah and I went on pass Liberty. On our way out saw the "United States" which docked a short ways from the "Darby". We walked around town. Found a place to drink had a couple but couldn't tell it. I went to the cloak rm walked more. The buildings are all attached and very much alike. Lots of vacant spaces with large holes in the middle bombed no doubt. We ran into a large number of people walking from work I suppose at seven PM. A young fellow walked up to me and said "Hello Little Darling".tisk tisk. Couldn't find another place for a drink so went back to the same place. Had one then walked until we found a taxi." Helen had a wonderful surprise when she arrived in Germany: "Arrived Frankfort at 7:20 AM. Got the surprise of my life when Bill grabbed me as I didn't expect him to be able to meet me until I got to Bad Mergentheim. We stayed at a French Hotel two nites without bath and a soiled towel on the rack. Bill introduced me to hot wine also coniac. We saw the town and country too. Ate at the PX cafeteria. The town has a great deal of bombing the ruins still standing in most places." On a visit to Paris Helen wrote in part: "Going towards France Paris. Beautiful country trees planted along hi way making an arch overhead. At the border policemen only interested in money so he can make out papers on the car. Called Bill "Mesure Ross-on". Afraid we would take off with his pencil. We didn't plan to go to Paris proper but no hotels on the out skirts so kept looking. Saw a brightly lit place called the Metropolitan. Turned out to be the subway.Stopped at another store. A French man who was a prisoner of Germans and could speak a bit of German so Bill got bread and a can of meat. So we had something to chew on at least. Found apples and pears along the highway.Just as it was getting dark we had a flat in front of some Catholic bldg with nuns. That didn't stop Bill from cussing. The police came by." "On to Austria. More beautiful country still many cows with bells. Up in snow. Got to Innsbruck just about dark. Picked up an old man on the way. Went to the restroom and paid to use slick newspaper instead of T paper. A room in a nice big looking hotel but too cold. So I'm going to bed disgusted. Hotel Maria Theresia Insbruck Austria. Arrived in Hamburg late. Guess we drove the wrong streets to find a hotel. Finally Hotel Zuman. The strangest hotel we've ever seen. It used to be a bomb shelter. It's a round t--- of a thing with thick walls and you walk around and around up a steep runway to get to the top. Tiny rooms all the way up with bunk beds. Not room enough to sneeze in. Quite an experience. Now we know what a bomb shelter looks like." There are 74 handwritten pages in the 8" x 5" book. Written in ink the handwriting is legible for the most part but the spelling is terrible. The hard cover book itself is overall VG.; Manuscript; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF POST WORLD WAR II EUROPE TRAVEL ROAD TRIP HELEN AND WILLIAM BILL ROSSAN AMERICANA AMERICAN SERVICE PERSONNEL IN EUROPE RECONSTRUCTION OF EUROPE HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT AUTOGRAPHED AUTHORS AMERICANA MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH KEEPSAKE WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL PERSONAL HISTORY ARCHIVE DIARY DIARIES antiquité contrat vélin document manuscrit papier Antike Brief Pergament Dokument Manuskript Papier oggetto d'antiquariato atto velina documento manoscritto carta antigüedad hecho vitela documento manuscrito Papel . hardcover‎

‎HELEN BROOKE HERFORD‎

‎1905 MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF A YOUNG WOMAN LIVING A FUN SOCIAL AND LIBERAL TEENAGE SCHOOLING LIFE HANDWRITTEN BY THE FUTURE FOUNDER OF THE BRITISH UNITARIAN WOMEN’S LEAGUE‎

‎CAMBRIDGE COUNTY SCHOOL WATERTOWN MASS. MA. Very Good. 1905. On offer is a historically significant diary from the main founder of the British League of Unitarian and Other Liberal Christian Women commonly known as the British Unitarian Women’s League Helen Brooke Herford. In addition to founding the organization Herford worked as Secretary from the League's inception in 1908 until 1929 accomplished a tremendous amount of good due to her tireless effort and enthusiasm. She helped set up the Correspondence Bureau during the First World War oversaw the publication of many pamphlets and help set up District Leagues establish the organization’s Monthly Letter and the League Annual Meeting and much more. By the time of Herford’s death 171 Branches 11 District Leagues and 2 Neighbourhood Leagues were in existence. This diary is from 1905 three years before she would found the organization when Herford was only 19 years living in Watertown Massachusetts and attending the Cambridge County School. It details the parties dances gossip crushes concerts church visits and many other aspects of the life of a liberal 19 year old female student. It certainly shows a different and very formative side of a woman who would go on to do so much good in her life. In addition to the normal entries of student life Herford also spends a significant amount of time traveling by train across America from Massachusetts to Portland Oregon stopping in Billings Montana for two weeks to stay with family. Helen goes to church often but does not speak too much on her personal beliefs. Like many young women her age she is more concerned with friends boys and school than she is with her religious beliefs. This diary contains approx 70 pages of handwritten entries some pages of which are full and double sided others just a few lines or paragraphs. Also included is a hand drawn floor plan of her house in Watertown Massachusetts. Her enthusiasm for the landscape of Montana would be realized when later in life she ended up owning a dude ranch near Limestone Stillwater County Montana. The book's leather cover shows some wear but is generally in good condition. All pages are intact and free of any major damage or discoloration. The diary is not full but does contain some interesting background information about her early life. TEXT: “Jan 1 1905. Went to bed this morning very early after Nannies party. Nannie and L went back with Whitney & Scott to sleep at the Henderson's because there were so many to sleep at the Whitneys. We decided we would not go in the any house again until next year so as it was only 15 past eleven we walked slowly to the station sat there for awhile that went to H’s and sat on the door step unit 12 Saturday 31 was Nannies birthday.”; “Jan 5 1905. School begun today and most of the girls are back but Edith Stor hasn't come yet and I wish she would come. We played around after noon and at dinner I had my presents Crawford from the four Rodgers Pride and Prejudice from Alice and Patty Sense & Sensibility from miss Hays and Miss Holbrook.”; “Jan. 13 1905. Went to Cambridge to see Rose with Elizabeth Mabel was there and we had tea. At the square waiting for a car Mr R. Moot came up and spoke to Elizabeth. Nell Murphy was here for the dance when we got back. Dressed after dinner Helen was here for the first one she has been down to only two of all the boys.”; “July 19 1905. Arrived in Billings Stayed in Billings for two weeks then started West for Portland Tacoma. The scenery from Livingston is very good some places in the mountains we could see three tracks below us where we had been. The prettiest scenery at Livingston and Bozeman and along the Green River. From Livingston we had two engines in front of and one behind part of the way. Spent the night in Tacoma and then took a train to Centralia and changed there for Hoquiam where we took the boat off to West Port Had met mother Mrs. Armstrong - Brooke & Jack half way there from West Port Edina visited on going through to life saving station.” Backround: Helen Brooke Herford was the main founder of the British Unitarian Women's League. Helen Brooke Herford worked as Secretary from the League's inception in 1908 until 1929 and much had been accomplished due to her tireless effort and enthusiasm - the setting up of the Correspondence Bureau during the First World War the publication of pamphlets the setting up of District Leagues establishing the Monthly Letter and the League Annual Meeting and much more. 171 Branches 11 District Leagues and 2 Neighbourhood Leagues were in existence and the Executive Committee had become the Central Committee. Members were encouraged to keep in touch with voting women who left home to take up work firstly in this country and then isolated women overseas. Work developed in many directions including the issuing of a monthly newsletter. With the advent of World War I branches rose to the special needs of the time including necessary articles made and distributed serving men welcomed into homes or visited in hospital. She was also the granddaughter of Unitarian minister and noted preacher and author who served several important churches in Great Britain and America. Her younger brother Oliver 1860-1935 a poet writer and illustrator in the USA was popularly known as “the American Oscar Wilde.” Her sons John “Jack” Herford and William Herford were sheep ranchers in New Mexico and later ran a dude ranch in Yellowstone County Montana. Beatrice Herford 1867–1952 a daughter became a Broadway actress. Following her education in Germany and Boston Massachusetts Helen Herford returned to Montana where she taught school in Carbon County and worked on her parents' ranch. Herford gained much of her experience in the Alliance of Unitarian Women in the USA. In 1929 she and a cousin Helen Underwood Wellington entered into a partnership to establish a dude ranch near Limestone in Stillwater County Mont. The Swinging H Ranch operated until 1937 when financial pressures forced Helen Herford to suspend operations and sell. She returned to teaching afterwards and died in Columbus Montana in 1972. Her archive of papers and correspondence is held at the Montana State University Library. ‎HELEN GERRISH HUGHES‎

‎1917 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT WORLD WAR I HOMEFRONT AND COLLEGE DIARY OF A YOUNG SAN FRANCISCO WOMAN ATTENDING UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA AT BERKELEY‎

‎BERKELEY WILTON SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY CALIFORNIA CA. Good. 1917. On offer is a charming original manuscript diary handwritten by Helen Gerrish Hughes who lived in San Francisco and attended University of California Berkeley. Historians and collectors of the era and particularly those in the San Francisco area Helen Hughes details her life and travels mentioning events and observations of many familiar landmarks: a banquet at the Claremont Hotel in Berkeley; New Year's Eve on Market Street; the Ferry Building etc. She mentions the "dreadful" traffic on Market Street in San Francisco. Her father is a colonel in the army and many of her acquaintances are in the service so there are references to military installations in the area and fears of friends being sent to France to serve. Folded inside the book maybe as a bookmark was the flyer advertising the Watchtower Society. For the most part the diary deals with 1917 - 1918 at the University with two entries at the end; one in 1923 we read that Helen is now teaching school in the San Joaquin Valley near Winton and then the last in 1924 merely up to say that she is still teaching quite happy etc. "What a contrast to those awful war days!" she exults in the 1923 entry. The book proper a 'Little Colonel's Good Times Diary' is written by Anne Fellows Johnston and published in 1909 this book includes a 10 page forward by the author a Birthday Record and a diary of 113 completed pages with entries beginning on December 23 1917. She notes the book is Volume II but the first volume is absent and unaccounted for. There is cover wear including some fading two ink spots on the front endpapers overall tanning one creased page edge wear and minor soil and separation of pages from the spine but overall G.; Manuscript; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall; KEYWORDS: UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA BERKELEY UCB SAN FRANCISCO WWI WORLD WAR I WORLD WAR ONE THE GREAT WAR THE WAR TO END ALL WARS BERKELEY WILTON SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY CA HOMEFRONT AMERICAN HOMEFRONT HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH DIARY JOURNAL LOG KEEPSAKE WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS DIARIES JOURNALS LOGS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL PERSONAL HISTORY antiquité contrat vélin document manuscrit papier Antike Brief Pergament Dokument Manuskript Papier oggetto d'antiquariato atto velina documento manoscritto carta antigüedad hecho vitela documento manuscrito Papel . unknown‎

‎Helen Leonard Gilman‎

‎1901-1903 Manuscript Diary of a Wisconsin High School Sorority Girl Who Would Go on to Marry Into a Prominent New England Family and Make an Impact At Dickinson College‎

‎Madison Wisconsin: Madison Wisconsin University of Wisconsin Dickinson College. Good with no dust jacket. 1901. Hardcover. On offer is a revealing diary written by one Helen Leonard Gilman 1884-1952 of Madison Wisconsin during her sophomore and senior years of high school at Madison High. Gilman would go on to graduate from the University of Wisconsin as a teacher and marry Dr. Herbert Wing a member of a prominent New England family which founded Sandwich Massachusetts and a renowned professor of Greek literature for many decades at Dickinson College in Pennsylvania. NOTE: We also hold a diary written by Dr. Herbert Wing in our collection - search for item # 2097 or contact us for the listing. See end of listing for complete BIO NOTES on Gilman and Wing. This diary covers the second half of Gilman’s sophomore year of high school with long chatty entries spanning January to August 1901. There is then a large gap and Helen returns on June 12 1903 for a detailed update about her high school graduation and once more on June 29 1903 when she meets up with her Delta Epsilon sisters for a final picnic before they all move on. In her diary Helen gives us much more than a daily look at her life. She is highly intelligent and provides great detail that situates the reader clearly in the teen world of Wisconsin at the turn of the 20th century. She is heavily involved with her high school sorority Delta Epsilon and discusses their activities at length including the initiation process for a new member named Daisy. She shares great detail about her education extracurricular activities church life and community involvement. She is an engaging writer and her entries are robust. She writes in a notebook instead of a diary allowing her to be as verbose as she desires in her writing. Some excerpts from her diary give a sense of the themes and style of her writing: “Another week of school begins! The same old studies History Caesar Algebra and Greek are gone over. This noon took my notices to the Journal office with my notices. After school tonight the committee appointed to oversee Daisy’s initiation met here. We have planned the most terrible things! Its a wonder if the poor child is not killed. This evening the Nautilus Club have a sleigh ride but I am unable to go on account of my cold and hard hard studies…” Jan 14 1901. “I took to school with me this morning the babies Mother Goose Rhymes which we Delta Epsilon girls gave to Daisy who is to learn portions of it Daisy is being initiated into the sorority. Nautilus club met this evening after school and we had quite an exciting time as one of the girls got so excited while talking about how much she loves Burns that she wept. After club Margaret F and I went up town. The small pox scare at the Psi U house has proved to be nothing put a case of La grip” Jan 15 1901. “This has been a very busy and delightful day – Flora and I went uptown at noon and tried to find a poster girl that I could use tonight but failed so after school I had to draw one. Such a sight as all the girls were this evening. Fran and Daisy came as ballet girls and looked too dear for any use. Awful low necks and short skirts. Dignified Clare shocked us all by appearing in a skirt far above her knees! .” Feb 21 1901. “. Today however is a great day for this morning I received the reward of four hard years of labor – my diploma from Madison High School . With a grade of 5th in a class of 95! . . Last night I received my graduation presents.grandma gave me a beautiful diamond solitaire and the aunts a beautiful pearl ring.Mama gave me one of her beautiful gold bracelets with the initials of all who have worn it inside…” June 12 1903. For a social historian or researcher into Women’s Studies this is a window into the role education played in socializing young women into gender roles. As the writer Karen Graves noted in Girl’s Schooling During the Progressive Era the high school education system became a more "efficient site for the construction of gender" Graves 2016. Traditionally education served to teach middle and upper class girls enough to make them suitable marriage partners for men who would actually be the ones running affairs. Its goal was to make them good wives and mothers not educated equals in society. This diary gives a fine view into this system and would be a valuable addition to any writings exploring this subject. Her sorority membership adds an extra layer as sororities and fraternities have long been seen as elitist and exclusionary organizations that serve to segregate young people based on ethnicity class and wealth. BIO NOTES: Gilman was born to Edward Gilman and Sophie Mosley in 1884 in Madison Wisconsin. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Wisconsin in 1907 and taught at schools around the state. She also worked for the Wisconsin Historical Library. In 1916 she married Herbert Wing who came from a well-established New England family. Helen and Herbert lived in Pennsylvania where Herbert worked at Dickinson College. They had one child H. Gilman Wing who graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Dickinson in 1948. During the senior Wing’s tenure at Dickinson Helen helped to organize the Mary Dickinson Club. While in Pennsylvania Helen founded the Carlisle branch of the American Association of University Women was a patroness of Pi Beta Phi sorority and was heavily involved in the Methodist church. Herbert Wing was an ancestor of Reverend John Wing who founded the town of Sandwich Massachusetts the oldest community on Cape Cod. Through marriage she is a member of the Wing Family of America Inc. This nonprofit corporation was formed in 1902 to preserve the family heritage of The Reverend John and Deborah Wing It also owns Wing Fort House the oldest home in North America continuously owned by one family. Helen sadly passed away at the age of 68 from breast cancer. This hardcover lined notebook measures 9.5 inches by 7.5 inches. It contains 96 pages and is about 50% complete. The cover is in good condition. The spine is in good condition but the binding is loose at the inside front cover although it is still intact. The pages are in good condition and the handwriting is quite legible. Tipped in to the diary are dried flowers from Helen’s high school grad two handwritten original Delta Epsilon songs and a handwritten list of names that appear to be connected to sorority life. Overall Good. ; Manuscripts; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 96 pages; Signed by Author . Madison Wisconsin, University of Wisconsin, Dickinson College hardcover‎

‎1914 Diary of a Teen Girl Whose Family Were Prominent Early Settlers in New York Involved in the Suffragette Movement Keenly Observant of Global Events‎

‎Upstate New York Ny Marcy: New York Upstate New York Marcy NYC Suffragette Movement New York. Good. 1914. Hardcover. On offer is fine diary written by a young woman in upstate New York at the outset of World War One. The author of this diary is 18 year old Helen Meyer. She was born in Marcy NY in 1896. Her grandfather was Mortimer Mayhew whose family had been early settlers in this area of upstate New York. Mayhew had once been the assessor and tax collector for Marcy and had served 7 terms as town supervisor. Her mother was Laura F Mayhew Meyer. She taught school and in 1890 was elected as School Commissioner for the First District of Oneida Co NY. Our informal research has not discovered any additional biographical information about her. Helen is a very smart young woman who did very well in school. Her grades were high and she wrote of graduating from high school with honours. She studied music at the Utica Conservatory and often played piano at community events. She writes: "20 o below at 6 A. M. Coldest day this year. Nearly froze riding in the car this A. M. Clear day. Glee club meeting Concert on Feb 6 at Junior Entertainment. Took my music lesson. Fine. He says I am doing very well. Will play at more recitals. My new coat is great. Wore it first time" Jan 13; "Beautiful spring day - warm. Our reports out today. New system - took them to each class. I received A - A - A - B. Had fire drill the third period. Late - got 8 AM car. Clock wrong" Mar 31; "Tried Virgil and English. Not very easy. Tired out. Stayed at Hotel Utica to wait for M. Grade certificate at conservatory" June 18; "Took music lesson. Had trouble with scales. Mr Magenday had me order 'Clementi Sonatas. Had enthusiastic assembly over Rome game. Cheered and sang til 9: 15" Sept 13Helen was well aware of events happening in the outside world. She noted the U. S. Invasion of Mexico and the taking of Vera Cruz the sinking of the Empress of Ireland in the St. Lawrence River and WWI: "War with Mexico. Vera Cruz taken by U. S…" Apr 22; "Decoration Day. Jane & I went to exercises at cemetery. About 60 present. "Empress of Ireland" sunk in St. Lawrence last night. Over 1000 drowned. 2nd to Titanic." May 30. She was certainty progressive in her thinking being elected as 'Class Suffragette'. In fact the term 'suffragette' is mentioned a number of times in her entries. She displays a wry sense of humour as well: "Dance. Fine night. Rained this AM. Had some good dances. I am not going to play for dances if no-one dances with me." Dec 30. For a social historian this is an excellent look inside the life of a quite mature older teenager. It would also be a good resource for a Women's Studies program as it directly addresses the existence of a Suffragette Movement that many think existed only in large cities. Measuring 4.0 inches by 2.5 inches this small diary contains 183 pages and is about 85% complete. The cover is in good condition as are the spine and binding. The pages are in good condition as well and her handwriting is legible. ; Manuscripts; 32mo 4" - 5" tall; 183 pages; Keywords: handwritten manuscript document letter autograph writer hand written documents signed letters manuscripts historical holograph writers autographs personal memoir memorial antiquité contrat vélin document manuscrit papier antike brief pergament dokument manuskript papier oggetto d'antiquariato atto velina documento manoscritto carta antigüedad hecho vitela documento manuscrito papel .
