‎1952 Original Handwritten Diary Account of an American Army Mp Who Witnesses the Bloody May Day Riots in Japan and Serves in the Korean War‎

‎On offer is a small diary where young American Army MP Charles A. White recorded his experiences in Korea during the war.

White was from St. Louis Missouri. He enlisted in the United States army in 1948 and served in the 95th Military Police Battalion. This battalion was the largest most geographically dispersed military police battalion in the United States Army. The unit fell under the command of the 18th Military Police Brigade. The 95th was activated in June 1945 in Germany and operated until its inactivation in June 2014. It served in post-war Germany the Korean War the Vietnam War Iraq and Afghanistan.

White's diary begins with him preparing to board the troop carrier USNS General Hugh J. Gaffey leaving from Fort Leonard Wood and bound for Korea. "Went aboard USNS Gen. Hugh J. Gaffey at 1300. Cold nasty day. Ship large nice. Sposed to be best troop ship. Pacific. Movies crowded. Food not bad. Weather warming. Do nothing today but police. Am enjoying trip a lot. Wish was in Navy. Ship 16000 tons. 608 feet 23 knots. Said to be in tail of hurricane. Weather worsening. Little sleep tonight almost tossed out top bunk. Still stormy; ships paper reports 60 foot waves still supposed in hurricane. Dependents topside. Certainly going first class" April 2.

On April 14 the ship arrived in Japan. "Weather nasty. Word passed we have guard tomorrow for debarkation. Rainy. Passed Yokosuka dropped hook. Still raining cold. Guard debarked ship. Jap train to Camp Drake. Processed. First views of Japanese and buildings. Little wooden hovels and some US type buildings. People smile seem very friendly to US G. I.' s. Drake's buildings 450 ft. Long. Jap prep school. PX fabulous. Thru processing. Hope I get G. H. Q. Find M-1 for zero. Japanese are interesting bunch. All smiles and little bows. Beginning to realize a little of what people like about this place."

White's April 30th entry discusses the Bloody May Day riots for which he was present. By June he had arrived in Korea. "We pull CQ here every fifteen days and it gets rather tiresome after awhile. Have a lot of planes. Red and Yellow for air and ground attack several air alerts but no enemy planes. The Han Bridge is blocked out as is a great deal of the area surrounding it which makes it a glorious black target in the midst of the lited area in case of a possible raid. Won is supposedly sold legally at 6000 to the dollar but the value fluctuates with the time of the month near or far from payday on the black market and who buys it legally The usual range is from 7000 right after payday to maybe 110000 toward the end of the month. You are continually besieged by little boys who look to be about 7 but are probably nearer 17 who want to 'changyamung' or invite you to a 'Horahora' where they assure you the girls are all clean well educated and Japanese" June 9.

Measuring approximately 2.5 inches by 5.75 inches the diary contains 52 pages and is approximately fifty percent complete. The cover and binding are in good condition as are the pages. The handwriting is legible. This is an excellent perspective of the Korean War seen through the eyes of an MP who was there on the ground. A military historian would find this valuable in cross-referencing other information. White's comments add a human note to this very grim war experience. hardcover‎

‎Charles Albert Rodock‎

‎1943 Manuscript Diary and Personal Items of a US Navy Recruit from Ohio Who is Delighted to Join Up and Describes Daily Training with Enthusiasm and Rare Detail‎

‎Great Lakes Training Center Chicago Nellie Ohio. Good with no dust jacket. 1943. Hardcover. On offer is a diary that doubles as a coming-of-age tale of a 20-year-old newly inducted US Navy serviceman from Nellie Ohio kept for three months in 1943 while he trained at the Great Lakes Training Center near Chicago graduated took a short leave back in Ohio and headed to his next base in Hitchcock Texas. During this time he describes in very impressive and rarely-seen detail every aspect of his training and adjustment to army life. The author of this diary is Charles Albert Rodock 1922-2012 who worked as a grinder at the Timken Company in Canton Ohio for his entire career. He married bookkeeper Mary Kathryn Jones 1927-2017 and together they had one child Deborah Jean b. 1952. To learn more about Charles and the Rodock family of Ohio see BIO NOTES at end of listing. Charles registered for the army in 1942 at age 19 and was inducted into the army on March 9 1943 and began training at the Great Lakes Training Centre on March 19 1943. He kept this diary carefully until a few days before he was transferred to the Naval Air Station Hitchcock Texas in late June 1943.Charles follows the flow of his My Life in the Service diary to the tee. He fills five pages titled “My Buddies” and “My Buddies in the Service” to record and have his pals record their names addresses and some well wishes. He leaves the intervening pages blank and picks back up at the “diary” section of the book and begins right at the beginning: “I was sent to Columbus for induction into the US Army. I chose Navy and was held over that night” March 9. Over the next several days he writes of each day’s events related to his induction into the service from his swearing in to his medical checks to his travel to Chicago where he arrived on March 18. His energy for his new job as a member of the US Navy cannot be overstated nor can the detail with which he describes his daily routine as he trains into his role. Excerpts give a sense for the vigour and detail with which Rodock writes: “Up at 5: 30 in the morning. Took a physical exam. Passed with flying colors. Got a real set of clothes and sure wasn’t sorry I joined the Navy. Sure got my first taste of navy chow. Breakfast was good Dinner fish and Supper stews. What a time when I first got into my Navy blues which made me feel like I just became a man” March 19. “Went to morning quarters inspection for the first time. We have it every morning from here on out. Had a class in Navy statutes and then clothes rolling. I got all of mine done in good shape. Bag inspection is soo so the C. P. O said. Company is beginning to go to work and get things done. We got our smokery privilege but no canteen privilege yet. Got a very nice picture from Betty” April 7. “Got a class in boxing and final two shots. They were the worst two and one fellow fainted as we were about to leave the drill hall. Then we drilled four hours in the afternoon. I stood guard while the boys went to a show…” April 8. “To day was a long tiresome and very disgusting day. We were on regimented work detail. Started off with early morning quarters and then fire drill…. Ended up by standing guard from 8: 00PM util 12: 00 midnight” April 9. “We got up and then started to pack our things sea going style. We cleaned up the barracks and started to our new camp at 8: 30 AM. Arrived in Camp Green Bay at 10: 00 AM and met our new C. P. O. He gave us instructions on first about every thing. I met Buck at the canteen at 5: 30PM. He sure was glad to see Jack and I. We had quite a get together. I took him into my barracks and I went into his afterwards. Then I had charge of taking the boys to the show. We saw “Cabin in the Sky”. Then we got back to our new barracks and prepared for bed. It sure was a great day and a busy one. Because of our first time for moving” April 24. “This looks as if the last day Jack and I are going to be together. He is being drafted to Saben Pass Texas and I am going to Hitchcock Texas air base. We packed our gear and left New Orleans naval station at 8: 30. We rode the train all night and got in Houston Texas” June 11. “I unloaded bombs weighing 325 lbs almost all day long. I then cleaned up and went on Liberty. I sure was tired and didn’t feel like doing much. Met several nice gals and sure had a good time” June 21. While this diary does not contain the action that a frontline WWII diary might the detail with which Charles describes his experience leaving nothing out from the moment he is inducted into the army through his graduation from training and trip to his first naval base makes it a true treasure. This diary would be of interest to anyone interested in World War Two from the perspective of the young recruit or the lived experience of a young small town man coming-of-age in the army. This diary measures approximately 6x4.5 inches. 53 pages are filled with long newsy legible diary entries an additional 5 pages have names and addresses of the author’s pals and approximately 4 other pages in the diary have been filled in. The diary is hardcover and in good condition with only typical signs of age and wear typical of a diary of its age. Included with the diary are a number of Rodock’s photos ephemera and a personal bible gifted to Rodock and inscribed by his reverend. These accompanying pieces add colour to Rodock’s story. BIO NOTES: Born in Nellie Coshocton County Ohio Charles Albert Rodock graduated from Warsaw High School in the Class of 1940. He then moved to Canton to work for Timken Company as a grinder in the Bearing factory where he would work his entire career until his retirement in 1985. In 1947 Charles married Mary Kathryn Jones a bookkeeper at First National Bank and later at the Bearing factory. Charles and Mary had one daughter Deborah Rodock Maiese b. 1952. Deborah married Dr. Philip M. Maise in 1978. Deborah is a highly educated and accomplished researcher who attained a Master’s degree in public administration from George Washington University. Charles was an active member of his community being involved in the Dueber United Methodist Church Canton Lodge No. 60 F&A. M. Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Canton and Goodyear Hunting and Fishing Club of Akron.; Manuscripts; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 62 pages; Signed by Author . hardcover‎

‎CHARLES DAWSON MCALLISTER; GAYLORD GILBERT‎

‎1932 SUPER SIGNIFICANT ORIGINAL TYPED MANUSCRIPT LOG BOOK DETAILING AN EARLY AVIATION EVENT OF STUNNING ACHIEVEMENT IN AN OPEN AIR BI-PLANE BY AN EARLY AVIATION PIONEER AND GREAT FRIEND OF CHARLES LINDBERGH‎

‎DAYTON OHIO TO PORTLAND OREGON. Good. 1932. On offer is a superb and quite rare logbook detailing a cross-continent flight in an open-air biplane. Measuring 11 inches by 8 inches the log book contains 19 typed pages plus 2 pages of orders The log book has a hard bound cover and it is in excellent condition. It is one of only five copies made. The log details a cross-country flight in 1932 in a two-seat open-cockpit BT-2B Douglas biplane by First Lieutenant Air Corps Charles Dawson McAllister and Captain Gaylord S. Gilbert Cavalry National Guard. The flight was a training flight authorized by the chief of the Air Corps via Special Orders No. 188. Its purpose was to attend the Legion Convention in Portland OR. The flight log describes the details of their flight and personal reactions in a very informal sometimes humorous style. Includes a page detailing takeoff and landing points times of arrival and departure miles and time in the air for each leg of the journey. Tucked inside is an article from Purdue's alumni magazine The Triad published March 1933 describing the flight; the article has two photographs. Charles Dawson McAllister 1896-1997 was born in Logansport Indiana. He entered the military service in May 1917 and served in WWI as a lieutenant in infantry. He later graduated from Purdue; at one time he was head of the Purdue Alumni Association. In 1924 he transferred to the Air Corps and eventually became Chief Electrical Unit Engineering Section of the Air Corps. In the 1940s he ran the country's only B-24 training program. McAllister had a storied flying career. Before retiring as a colonel he flew 6200 hours for the Army. He also flew 5000 hours in his own planes - including a 19000-mile trip to the southern tip of South America. McAllister was associated with a young Charles Lindbergh. On March 26 1925 McAllister and Lindbergh who were both in flight school were involved in a much-reported mid-air plane collision out of Kelly Field. At the time McAllister was an officer and Lindbergh only a cadet. The two along with an instructor were on a three-plane training maneuver during which Lindbergh according to McAllister hit McAllister's plane. Both safely bailed out. The two had a relationship which continued over the years. He passed away in 1997 at the age of 102. Co-pilot Gilbert graduated from law school in Louisville KY and was a captain of cavalry in the Kentucky National Guard. Casual research did not turn up any additional biographical information on Gilbert. They flew a BT 2B Douglas biplane. Built as an observation aircraft for the United States Army in the 1920's this was a very reliable plane. The Douglas Aircraft Company was founded in 1921. In 1967 it merged with McDonnell Aircraft to become McDonnell Douglas. In 1997 McDonnell Douglas merged with Boeing Aircraft. The flight detailed in the logbook began and ended at Wright Field Dayton OH. They took off on September 7 1932 and made 10 stops along the way -- Minneapolis Municipal Airport Minneapolis MN; Great Falls Municipal Airport Great Falls MT; Boeing Field Seattle WA; Pearson Field Portland OR; Crissy Field San Francisco CA; Clover Field Santa Monica CA; March Field Riverside CA; Phoenix Airport Phoenix AZ; Biggs Field El Paso TX; and Fort Sill OK. They returned to Wright Field on September 21 1932. The log was written mostly by Gilbert. In addition to flight and navigation details Gilbert makes frequent personal comments. September 7th - Wednesday 9:30 A.M E.S.T. left Wright Field Ohio; weather - perfect. Wind - north. Temperature - mild. 12:15 P.M. C.S.T. left CHICAGO Terrain flat to MT. HOREB WIS. Good landing. Then rough rolling to LACROSSE. Poor Landing. Weather - prefect. Average calm flying low all the way under 1000 feet to take advantage of wind Rough over Wisconsin. I had apple pie too early this morning. May not keep it. Just got rid of apple pie etc. over WISCONSIN…I climbed up to 3000 feet altitude where it was smooth but wind too strong to make speed. September 8th - Thursday 9:50 A. M. We are cruising at 112 mph and compass reads two points north of west. Over the plains now. There is a nice herd of cattle. I will have these notes typed when I return to the office with extra copies. I am passing the note book forward to MAC. Maybe he wants to say whether or not this country is worth fighting for September 9th - Friday It was too rough to do any writing in the plane yesterday P.M. but I will try to describe in a very few words our experience over the ROCKIES at the CONTINENTAL DIVIDE. About 3:30 P.M. we were flying due west at 5000 feet over the desert of SOUTHERN MONTANA. We had taken off our jackets and opened our shirts trying to keep cool through the desert climate. Just as we were nearing the foothills a "LINE-SQUALL" struck us and the ship dropped several feet and then twisted right and left and up and down. MAC's life belt was unfastened and he was trying to control the ship with one hand and fasten his belt with the other. This air disturbance lasted for several minutes immediately we encountered a 65 mile wind from the northwest. The air was exceedingly rough and we were tossed up and down right and left. We continued fighting this storm for over an hour with the nose of the 'plane pointing northwest into the storm but the 'plane actually travelling a due westwardly course. It seemed to me that the 'plane was hardly moving. For another one and one half hours we continued to freeze and fight that windstorm 9000 feet over the rocky peaks of the CONTINENTAL DIVIDE. Arriving at the convention in Portland OR Gilbert comment on the outstanding hospitality: I never saw a CONVENTION CITY give so much away free to the VETS as PORTLAND did this year . p7 The log details some of the activities in which they participated and them documents their return trip to Wright Field. There is a summary of the flight data for each 'leg' of the journey. And on the last page Gilbert identifies who received each of the 5 copies of this log. This is a rare and valuable document that provides an excellent 'cockpit view' of the state of flying in 1932. The dry flight data is accompanied by the wry and frequently humorous comments that Gilbert makes in his entries. An aviation historian would find this log a goldmine of information about this plane - only one of which exists today. A geographer would appreciate the detailed descriptions of the terrain they flew over much of it a low altitudes.; Manuscript; 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF CHARLES DAWSON MCALLISTER; GAYLORD GILBERT; LEGION CONVENTION PORTLAND OR 1932; BT-2B DOUGLAS; DOUGLAS AIRCRAFT COMPANY; MCDONNELL DOUGLAS; BOEING EARLY FLIGHT CROSS CONTINENTAL AIRPLANE FLIGHT CHARLES LINDBERGH OPEN COCKPIT OPEN AIR BIPLANE AEROPLANES TRAINING FLIGHT AVIATION PIONEERS AMERICANA HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS DIARY DIARIES JOURNALS PERSONAL HISTORY SOCIAL HISTORY HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUITÉ CONTRAT VÉLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGÜEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . unknown‎

‎Charles Dalton‎

‎Memoir of Captain Dalton : Defender of Trichinopoly, 1752-1753 [Hardcover]‎

‎About The Book : The Indian historian of the eighteenth century, transferred a great part of the contents of the MS. journal kept by Captain Dalton, during the last few years of his service in India, to his History of the War in India, which appeared in 1763. Much of the credit that devolved upon Orme for his historical production was really due to Dalton, and it is because this fact still remains unknown that I now publish the military memoirs of my great- grandfather, who supplied the historian with the minute details which characterise a great part of the first volume of a work which went through four editions, and has supplied the foundations stone of all subsequent works relating to the transactions of the British in India a hundred and thirty odd years ago. I am quite sure, desired no public acknowledgment of the favour he conferred upon the historian, by furnishing him with the interesting chronicle of the stirring military events which took place in Southern India between 1750 and 1754. About The Author : Charlie Dalton (1850-1913) was from Drumcondra in Dublin. After the free state was established he became a colonel in the new Irish Army, and along with Major-General Liam Tobin, signed the ultimatum that instigated the Army Mutiny in 1924.Liz Gillis is a historian and tour guide in Kilmainham Jail. She is the author of 'Revolution in Dublin' (2013) and 'The Fall of Dublin', part of the Military History of the Irish Civil War series.‎
