CHARLES J PETERSON [?]
1862 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT CIVIL WAR ERA DIARY CHRONICLING THE TRAVELS AND TRAVAILS OF A CIRCUIT RIDER TEACHER IN CENTRAL NEW YORK STATE
New York New York NY USA Oneida Chenango county. Good. 1862. On offer is a super detailed Civil War era diary by a circuit-rider school teacher who we believe was a Charles J. Peterson of Philadelphia who details his visits stays 'scholars' and local events of the area he serviced in central New York state. The author has connections to the area as he mentions births and funerals specifically related to him and his family. This diary will prove a wealth of genealogical and historical first hand information in central New York State specifically Oneida and Chenango counties. Each day begins with where our author will sleep that night. He also records the number of students daily and then makes a separate note in the margin. Research suggests he is paid by the number of students he teaches per day. The writer is also very involved in the communities - singing schools assisting in farm chores; hauling wood taking up carpet tapping sugar bush cleaning up etc. being nominated at 'Caucus' to be a constable meetings with the Teacher's Association a child dying from diphtheria his own bout with Scarlet Fever and so on. It seems teaching duties end in the spring when the weather improves and though he travels around a bit still our writer settles with one family for the summer and does farm labor for the most part. Diary is a small size measures 4" x 2 ½" & is all intact & clean with supple pages some wear on spine.; Manuscript; 48mo - over 3" - 4" tall; HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH DIARY JOURNAL LOG KEEPSAKE WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS DIARIES JOURNALS LOGS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL PERSONAL HISTORY AMERICANA antiquité contrat vélin document manuscrit papier Antike Brief Pergament Dokument Manuskript Papier oggetto d'antiquariato atto velina documento manoscritto carta antigüedad hecho vitela documento manuscrito Papel CIVIL WAR WAR BETWEEN THE STATES UNION REBELS NEW YORK TEACHER TEACHING EDUCATION ONEIDA CHENANGO DIPTHERIA SCARLET FEVER GENEALOGICAL . unknown

Charles L Merrick
1925 Diary of Charles L. Merrick Whose Family Farming Legacy Dates Back to 1714
Wilbraham MA. Good with no dust jacket. 1925. Hardcover. On offer is a fine diary of successful farmer Charles L. Merrick of Wilbraham Massachusetts in the early years of the twentieth century. Merrick was born in 1902 and lived his life in Massachusetts. He passed away in 1995 at the age of 93. Merrick is part of a multi-generational family that has owned Merrick Farm in Wilbraham since the original land grant in 1714. The farm business continues to this day in the hands of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. At the time the diary was written Merrick was 23 years of age. The diary tells us he had graduated from college and was a member of a fraternity most likely Theta Delta Chi. At the time of writing he was working for a company possibly family-owned that produced among other products sashes. This diary gives an excellent look at the life of a young man just beginning his career. Very hot. Pa Dick & I went to Amherst after some business in Amherst. Saw Whitcomb Daly & Olds about the young books. Got some stuff at the house left Dick and went to . to see the Starkweathers. Thunder showers. Home about 8: 30. Took a look at the strawberry festival. Multigraphed 400 copies of Frat. Letter to Alumni June 1. Quite hot. To office. Some late. Finished warehouse records. At 2 went to see John Murray & Geo Cassidy about Friskdale proposition. Cassidy offers $12000 & about $1500 cash and $3000 in good 2nd mtgs. Looks ok to me August 18. To office. Shipped quite a lot of heavy sash. My back nearly broken August 20. Cloudy. Not too much stirring. Paid off mortgage of $5000 & then settled payments etc with Mr. Cassidy finishing all papers; thru with Fiskdale except $6.36 on Taxes September 14. This small diary measures 6 inches by 3 inches and contains 122 pages. It is approximately 70 percent complete. The cover binding and pages are all in good condition. Several pages have either had a portion cut out or been completely removed from the diary. The handwriting is legible. The notebook contains an extensive list of contacts and in many cases individuals location details. It offers an outstanding look into the early life of a man who would build on the legacy of his forefathers in central Massachusetts. It is also an excellent source of personal data for people living in this historic part of New England. ; Manuscripts; 6" x 3"; 122 pages . hardcover

Charles Leonard Cone and Marian Erma (Williams McCracken) Cone
1925-1938 Diaries of the Husband and Wife of a Stafford New York Farming Family Both of Whom Are on Their Second Marriages
Stafford Batavia New York New York State. Fair with no dust jacket. Hardcover. On offer is a terrific archive of two diaries and a cash accounts book kept by a farming husband and wife in Stafford New York which follow them from late in their courtship through their marriage and the family life that followed. The diaries belong to Charles Leonard Cone 1904-1978 and Marian Erma Williams McCracken Cone 1905-1995. Charles and Marian were each others second spouses. Charles first wife Mae Pinney died in 1926 while Marian divorced her first husband Ezekiel David McCracken in February of 1929 in her accounting notes she includes the $70.00 she paid for said divorce. Marian and Charles married on May 4 1929. They had ten children. They each entered their marriage with a child from their previous unions Evelyn and Charles Jr. . Together the couple had Doris who did not survive infancy Shirley Norma Laura Laverne Lloyd Robert and Betty. This collection of three diaries covers the years of 1925-1938. The first two books were kept by Marian. The first is a diary that covers January 1 1929-May 9 1929 and May 10 1930-August 5 1930 note that this is a 1929 diary and Marian has changed the year to 1930 beginning on May 10. The second is a cash account book offering a fascinating look at the cost of goods and services in the 1920s and 1930s. Marian begins the accounts book in January of 1925 and keeps it consistently until mid-1926. The book is then used inconsistently between 1928 and 1938 allowing the researcher to compare cost of living over the course of 13 years. The final dairy allows us to see the Cones world through their patriarch Charles. He keeps the diary mostly from January to April 1934 with a few entries in 1937. His entries are fairly brief but provide a nice contrast to Marians as he describes the work he does day to day. Some excerpts from Marians diary follow: It has been pleasant just like a spring day. The snow is all gone. The creek is up to the road and it is raining tonight. I mopped and done my ironing this forenoon. We sewed this afternoon. I finished Elsi Scotts dress and got Mothers all done but the hem Jan 18 1929. It was pleasant only the wind blew. Louis plowed all day. We went over to Stafford and got our license this forenoon. We took Evelyn up to his folks while we went up and got married. We went up to Ruths tonight. Charles Junior came home with us this afternoon. Ruth and George had gone away. I made a cake and decorate it for Ruths birthday. I broke the starter again May 4 1929. Louis plowed over to the other place in the afternoon he dragged the barley ground. Charlie drilled the barley in the forenoon and sowed grass seed in the afternoon. I rolled a while in the afternoon May 10 1930. It was pleasant all day. The boys began pulling beans this morning. Had to fork them out by hand. I baked a cake and 2 pies this morning then went over and forked beans the rest of the day Aug 28 1930. Excerpts from the Charles diary follow: Arose 5: 30. Took children to school. Took Marian to dentist had all her teeth out. Rev Miller was here tonight. Mrs. Votry kept children Feb 1 1934. Fixed spreader in a. M. Cut awhile p. M. Until rain. CHARLES M DAWSON
1876 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT TRAVEL DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY AN ENGLISH WOOL MERCHANT'S 18 YEAR OLD SON WHO GAINS KNOWLEDGE CONFIDENCE AND EXPERIENCE IN CANADA AND THE USA BEFORE HE TACKLES CHINA
SS ADRIATIC AMERICA CANADA. Good. 1876. On offer is a super original May to September 1876 manuscript diary handwritten by Charles M. Dawson the son of British wool manufacturer Mark Dawson. Only 18 years old the tour to the US and Canada was undertaken to build up the confidence and experience of the scion of a successful enterprise. We note this trip was a prelude to a much longer undertaking in 1877 - 1878 when he visited China to sight-see conduct business but mostly to assess the market on behalf of his father's firm Mark Dawson & Sons of Bradford England worsted spinners est. 1848. We list these diaries separately Seller ID #0002187. Using a small 3 x 4 inch gilt edged undated note book with worn marbleized covers titled 'Log of my Journeyings in America and Canada from May 23rd 1876 Private' has approximately 115 pages of entries one cannot fail to be impressed by the maturity and composure of this young man who does a fine job of describing his voyage and his observations of all that he experiences. Adding further depth are a small number of illustrations by the young Dawson who is already quite and accomplished artist. We have a sketchbook he created much later in life. Beginning May 24 1876 leaving on the SS Adriatic from Liverpool we learn of seasickness whales icebergs and the death aboard ship of a young man in the last stage of consumption. Then to New York where his North American sojourn begins. Here are some snippets: Thursday Sept. 28 "This day being Pennsylvania Day all the stores were closed the streets were lined with bunting and flags as fine as are the 4th July - Geo having nothing to do he I set out early for the Exposition. We arrived there with great difficulty as every possible means of conveyance was crammed. The crowd at the Centennial was something fearful. Every passage and aisle was crowded to suffocation. We rambled around somehow nearly all day. We had a fine look in a Turkish café smoking long pipes and houkahas drinking coffee etc. We created a great sensation." Included is a tucked in photo of the 67 year old Charles. The cover is worn spine loose but overall G.; Manuscript; 48mo - over 3" - 4" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF CHARLES M. CHARLES M DAWSON
1877 - 1878 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT TRAVEL DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY THE 19 YEAR OLD SON OF AN ENGLISH WOOL MERCHANT TRAVELLING IN THE GUISE OF A GENTLEMAN ON A GRAND TOUR WHO IS IN FACT A SPY
AMERICA CHINA SHANGHAI. Good. 1877. On offer are a fascinating pair 2 of original 1877 - 1878 manuscript USA/China travel diaries handwritten by Charles M. Dawson the young 19 year old son and scion of an established successful English wool manufacturing concern. The books are fascinating as a substantive and significant historical record on numerous levels considering that while traveling as a young bon vivant an English gentleman on a fantastic sight seeing tour we soon learn what will be of particular interest to historians and researchers that the underlying reason for the young man's trip was industrial espionage! Touring and sight-seeing were a mere cover for Dawson's primary mission which was to study observe and gather intelligence on textile manufacturing processes using China grass hemp etc and trade opportunities with the option of whether to set up a factory in China or bring Chinese methods and products back to England. Undertaken at 19 years old a well educated now somewhat seasoned Dawson with one international trip under his belt having toured the USA and Canada the year before we list this diary separately Seller Id #0002186 he joined his father's firm 'Mark Dawson & Sons of Bradford England worsted spinners est. 1848' at an early age and later became a director of Henry Longbottom top-makers of Bradford. Book 1 has approximately 175 pages dated July 12th 1877 through October 28th and book 2 with about 90 pages dated October 29th through January 3rd 1878. A keen observer and a dedicated diarist Dawson records a treasure trove of interesting stories and observation of all he sees; places people customs culture industry and events from New York and his railroad journey across America to San Francisco the voyage to Japan and his fascinating record of China over a period of 100 days. Seeing such sights and making such observations as the Chicago riots Wahsatch Yokohama manufacturing activities prisoners Peking the Ming tombs smuggling skulls in pots a cat and rat market a brick tea factory grass processing factory and even tortures and executions and much much more. He writes while in Shanghai "I do not see much chance of putting up machinery here. First water power is impossible in Shanghai & coal is fearfully dear
out of Shanghai you have no protection from the Government. If Johnny was to see what we were up to the grass "guild"
would set the natives on & then good bye to grass machinery. When I get to Suchow if I can manage to get there "en guise" of traveller I shall be able to see how they prepare it & if possible buy it in a ready prepared state. If the Chinese even in the house here got to know my object in coming out I should not have the slightest chance of doing anything so I am merely here to look about & as I have taken a fancy to see some works I am going if possible to Suchow". Dawson negotiates purchases of China grass for export back to England as well as visiting manufactories. Adding further depth are a small number of illustrations by the young Dawson who is already quite and accomplished artist. We have a sketchbook he created much later in life. CHARLES MARSH

CHARLES P LEVY
1910 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT LETTERS COPYBOOK FILLED WITH ECLECTIC COPIES OF LETTERS TYPED AND HANDWRITTEN BY A GARRULOUS MARYLAND BUSINESSMAN SPORTSMAN AND POLITICO
FREDERICK MARYLAND. Good. 1910. Offered is a super letter copybook of 125 letters handwritten some typed by Charles P. Levy of Frederick Maryland. Mr. Levy is a bit of a character and somewhat garrulous as can be seen in his writings. The letters are an eclectic group some are business related some personal; about getting a gun repairs to it a hunting dog and hunting in general we note a letter to Governor Philip Lee Goldsboro on hunting laws and also important legal and judicial matters involving the county and environs. They are all from 1910-1912 and are in good condition. Here are some snippets of this interesting man: "I have on several occasions called the attention of both Judge Motter and Judge Peter to your cases and told them that you were very anxious to have them render their decisions on the demurrers
he promised me to see Judge Peter on Monday and come to a conclusion in the matter. He intimated that the demurrers would be overruled
" "Our December term of court is usually and unsatisfactory one in which to have cases assigned for a particular day as the court has to divide the time between Frederick and Montgomery Counties." "I used to raise Chickens but got tired of them and I have had no pets of that kind for some time and have been considering making a fresh start with pets of some kind which would not only be a pleasure but which would produce some revenue as well
I notice advertisements for guinea pigs frequently in the papers and very rarely see and advertised for sale and this gave me the idea there must be a fair demand for them
I intend to keep a few for my own pleasure
" "I examined the gun and accepted and paid for it. The gun is in fine condition except the very bad dent in the right barrel. Won't you kindly tell me what caused the dent and whether you have ever shot the right barrel since it received the injury and if so what effect it has on the shooting qualities and recoil of that barrel. In other respects I am very much pleased with the gun
" Letter to Parker Bros Meriden Connecticut
"I own one of your GH grade hammerless guns with Damascus barrels. In some way or other the right barrel has gotten a dent in it. The dent is apparently a slight one and yet it is perceptible on the inside of the barrel it is about the size of the small 1 in this type. Do you consider it safe to use the barrel in this condition Can you take the dent out and if so what would be the cost" "I bought eight guinea pigs about 3 weeks ago and four of them died soon after I got them
" "Queen is still lame she goes sort of sore and stiff like a dog often does the day after hard days hunt or like a very old dog. I am unable to locate the seat of the trouble sometimes it seems to be in the left shoulder and sometimes in the right hind leg but she does not flinch or show any signs of pain when you examine or press on these places
I gave her a two hours run in the fields yesterday a week ago but was not lucky enough to find any birds
" "What I want is a level headed steady going bird finder that will point every bird found and not one that chases all over the country and flushes as often as it points
I have a dog now that I need not pay attention to whatever he is not fast but finds more birds than half dozen of the race horse kind and he is just as steady as the last hour of the last day when he points you can eat your lunch and he will stay on point while you get through
