1923 1926 ORIGINAL PAIR OF DETAILED DIARIES HANDWRITTEN BY A PENNSYLVANIA MAN TRYING TO MAKE ENDS MEET DURING THE GREAT DEPRESSION BUT WHO ONE DAY WILL SIT ON THE INDIANA SUPREME COURT
ORWIGSBURG PA. Good. 1923. On offer are two original small diaries dating from the 1920's. The first diary has 52 pages full of extensive memoranda pages and is 100% complete. The second has 365 pages plus memoranda. It too is 100% complete. The cover and pages of the first diary is in good condition but the cover has separated from the spine. The second diary is in very good condition. The handwriting in both is very very small but very neat. The diaries belong to Alan Maurer of Orwigsburg PA. He was born in 1892 was a graduate of Valparaiso Law School in Indiana and Indianapolis Law School and admitted to practice law before Indiana Supreme Court in 1917. He passed away in 1941 at the age of 49. Records show that he served in the U.S. army in WWI. Casual research has turned up no other biographical information. Maurer works in the nearby town of Palo Alto PA. Most of his brief entries concern either travelling back and forth to Palo Alto time spent with his out-of-town girlfriend and routine day-to-day tasks: "At 7 A.M. to Palo Alto. Home at 7 P.M. Out town a while. Home early and bed early. PAY TODAY Bad cold" Jan 21 1923; "At 7 A.M. to Palo Alto. Home at 7 P.M. Out town a while. Home early. Pres Wilson reported dying." Jan 22 1923; "At 7 A.M. to Palo Alto. Home at 7 P.M. Out town a while. And to movies with Mom "Enemies of Women". Home at 11:15 P.M. Wrote Anna. No letter so far since Mar 26. Partly cloudy and moderate."Apr 2 1923. The second diary offers a little more detail as his entries are not as brief: "At 7 A.M. to Palo Alto. Home at 6:30 P.M. with Tobias. Eve. Out out town a while. Mom to movies. Out town to meet her. Home at 11 P.M. . Miners ok pact at Scranton. Work tomorrow. . " Feb 17 1926 ". David L Marshall the Phila chiropractor guilty of murder in the second degree for the death of Miss Dietrich. Abraham Wernick credited with triumph in saving prisoner from the electric chair. Charles Edwin Fox was District Atty who prosecuted and Judge McDewitt presided." Mar 24 1926. Overall these two diaries paint a picture of the life of an ordinary young American working man in the years immediately prior to the Great Depression. What comes through is a person who is meticulous about recording daily events and observations. ABOUT THE BOOK:- Anna Kingsford was born in England in 1846. She was an English woman of many accomplishments: mystic, doctor, women’s activist, vegetarian and writer. She was president of the London Lodge of the British Theosophy society in 1883 and formed the Hermetic Society in 1884. Her name appears in studies of the women movement in the second half of the ninetieth century in England. She has a prominent place in the history of vegetarianism and action against vivisection. She figures in medical history as among the pioneer women gained qualifications in the male profession. Despite suffering from asthama, Anna led a very busy life, lecturing widely on vegetarianism and against vivisection in addition to her medical practices. In November 1886. Anna received a drenching in a Paris downpour which triggered consumption. Travel to the Riviera and Italy did not improve her condition. In June 1887 She settled in London, and died there in February 1888. ABOUT THE AUTHOR:- Alan Pert has studied comparative religion and Hermetic philosophy for many years. He lives in Sydney. The author has managed an accurate biography of the amazing English woman Anna Kingsford (1846-1888). She accomplished much of lasting value in her life, tragically cut short by consumption (tuberculosis). In 1971, he graduated from the University of Sydney, Graduate Diploma in Librarianship from the Canberra College of Advanced Education in 1981. Since 1988 he has been a librarian at his alma mater. The 104 pages are fair copies in a secretarial hand or perhaps a scrivener of the intimate descriptive letters to his mother of the future Admiral Lafone while under the command of the Arctic explorer Captain Albert Markham likely written soon afterwards by a friend or family member from the originals which are unaccounted for. Albert proves to be a gifted writer making for keen eyed observation and intelligence. He provides significant accounts of the 'stirring events' of the Battle of Iquique between the navies of Bolivia Peru and Chile sent from HMS Turquoise illustrated with a 'rough' chart ending in the ruse by which the Independencia's Captain 'endeavoured to ram the Covadonga. The threatened blow was skilfully avoided by a sudden rush ahead and the great ironclad ran right up on to the reef the surf breaking over her. the Captain set her on fire and the crew escaped in boats'. There follows a vivid account of the sinking of the Esmerelda 'each crew firing their guns as the water touched it. They went down shouting "Viva el Chile"'. There are visits to Acapulco and an Admiralty commissioned scientific survey and research voyage to the Galapagos Islands which was written up in the Royal Geographic Society Monthly Record in 1880 with its 'lava rocks' and San Francisco the Lafone finds himself moored at Esquimault in British Columbia where the ship is refitted and he devotes himself to observation of local culture: 'About 2 miles from the ship there is an indian village; the people are half civilised'. This doesn't prevent games of football with locals vividly described rowing races visits by trainee Japanese officers and a fund raising drive for a ball and provision of a social club despite criticism of 'the society about here' as 'regular republicans'. It appears that Mr. George was a clergyman as he writes about many religious topics mentions giving sermons and speaks of others as "other clergyman". Entries paint a detailed picture of the times as he writes about many topics including the bad economy poor living conditions socialism insane hospitals and he mentions the women in the church being involved in suffrage plus much much more. Albert also does a good job as a diarist outlining his visits: Jamaica Plains Lincoln School S.J.C.D Parker House Harvard . Names mentioned include Judge Michael J. Murray Mayor Curley Dr. E.H. Bradford Jack Rese plus many others.
