My Life and What I Did with It
Jerusalem : Koren Publishers Ltd. 1979. Bright clean square tight unmarked copy. Sharp corners. No owner's name or bookplate. No remainder mark. Dust Jacket is lightly frayed at spine ends. Scarce especially in Dust Jacket. Frontispiece portrait. This is Herman Hollander's autobiography. Born in Altoona Prussia Hollander moved in 1931 to New York where he became a successful businessman in the leather industry. At one point in 1943 it was possible to ransom Jewish captives from the Nazis. "That Friday afternoon" Hollander recalled "I proposed to my wife that we sell our very comfortable three-story home and give the difference between the mortgage and the selling price to the Vaad Hatzala for the release of the ransomed Jews. My suggestion meant we would have to move into my in-laws' house until we found other accommodations. My wife readily agreed. After my in-laws also consented we sold our house and gave the money to the Vaad." In 1948 Hollander was among those who voted to declare a Jewish state and he was one of the first American Jews to settle in Israel. He was also part of the Israeli founders committee for Bar-Ilan University along with Moshe Haim Shapira Dr. Joseph Burg Dr. Zerach Warhaftig David Pinkas M. D. Magid Y.
