Questa è una favola. È la favola di un uomo che corona il suo sogno concludendo la Maratona competitiva di New York. È il 5 agosto del 1976, quando Adriano Berton e suo padre, su uno scooter, vengono travolti da un'auto impazzita; il papà perde la vita e ad Adriano si spezza la gamba sinistra, completamente. Giunto all'ospedale la soluzione più lineare pare quella dell'amputazione, ma il chirurgo che lo accoglie lo guarda negli occhi - è un bimbo di nove anni - e non se la sente. Contro tutti decide di "tentare" di riattaccargliela; è la prima volta che un intervento del genere viene sperimentato in Italia. L'operazione riesce e la vita di Adriano cambia. "Inoltrandomi nell'inferno, mi sono trovato in paradiso", afferma a distanza di tempo l'autore. Soltanto attraverso quel dolore, infatti, dice di aver potuto raggiungere la serenità, la tranquillità d'animo di chi sa accogliere gli eventi come necessari, e da qualunque vicenda riesce a trarre il meglio e a crescere di un passo. Grazie a quel drammatico giorno, infatti, e dalla forza che ne ha tratto, è riuscito a superare tutte le difficoltà a cui la vita l'ha messo di fronte, e ora, raccontando di sé e del suo progetto di riscatto attraverso lo sport, urla al mondo intero che ce la si può fare, che ce la si deve fare, qualunque cosa succeda e a qualsiasi costo.
