‎Sybille Schmitz, die in den 30er Jahren als die schönste Frau des deutschen Films galt, gehorchte keinem Typ. Sie war vor allem sie selbst. Eine Schauspielerin mit einer starken, unverwechselbaren Eigenart. 'Als ich mich vor zwanzig Jahren für die Ufa und ihre Stars zu interessieren begann, entdeckte ich unter den glatten Salondamen, den patenten Mädels oder den tanzwütigen Revuegirls das Gesicht einer Schauspielerin, das herausfiel, sich der Zuordnung entzog. Dieses ungewöhnliche Gesicht mit seinen klaren, herben Zügen, seinem scheuen Blick und dem stets etwas traurigen Mund umgab ein Hauch von Fremdheit, von Einsamkeit, die etwas mit seiner androgynen Schönheit zu tun haben mochte, jedenfalls in krassem Widerspruch stand zum eher gewöhnlichen Namen der Schauspielerin. Sybille Schmitz: Das hat etwas von Lieschen Müller und klingt beinah wie Ironie für diese einzigartige Frau, über die ich anfangs wenig erfuhr: dass sie bisexuell war, mit Goebbels aneinander geriet, in den 50er Jahren beruflich wie privat scheiterte und schließlich Selbstmord beging. Meine Neugier war geweckt. Wo immer ich jemand traf, dem der Name Sybille Schmitz etwas bedeutete, stieß ich auf Begeisterung, schwärmerische Verehrung. Und Unverständnis, dass diese Frau heute so vergessen ist. Mehr als drei Dutzend Filme hat Sybille Schmitz zwischen 1928 und 1954 gedreht, die Hälfte davon als Hauptdarstellerin. Mit prominenten Partnern wie Hans Albers, Heinz Rühmann oder Willy Birgel. Und unter Regisseuren wie Georg Wilhelm Pabst, Frank Wysbar oder Herbert Selpin. In ihrer erfolgreichsten Zeit bekam Sybille Schmitz ebenso hohe Tagesgagen wie etwa die Superstars Lilian Harvey oder Marika Rökk. Doch schon damals erreichte sie deren Popularität nicht annähernd. Ein weiterer Grund dafür, dass Sybille nie so populär wurde, wie manche der unbegabteren Kolleginnen, liegt in ihrer unverhohlenen Abneigung gegenüber dem Dritten Reich und dessen Führung. Sybille hatte eine Reihe jüdischer Freunde und Kollegen, für die sie sich einsetzte, als ab 1933 deren Ausgrenzung begann. Das trug ihr bei den Nazis den Ruf der politischen Unzuverlässigkeit ein. Bei Goebbels, der als ?Schirmherr des deutschen Films? ihr oberster Chef war, kam persönliche Abneigung hinzu. Entgegen Sybilles späterer Behauptung lässt sich aber ein durch Goebbels verhängtes Berufsverbot gegen sie nicht nachweisen. Dass es dennoch zuweilen schwierig war, Sybille Schmitz zu besetzen, lag auch am favorisierten Genre der Ufa unterm Hakenkreuz: In den harmlosen Unterhaltungsfilmen wirkte das ernste, abgründige Wesen dieser Schauspielerin wie ein störender Schatten. Sybille Schmitz, die in den 30er Jahren als die schönste Frau des deutschen Films galt, war weder das süße Mädel einer Magda Schneider, noch die Femme Fatal einer Zarah Leander, noch die Grande Dame einer Olga Tschechowa oder Lil Dagover. Sie war nicht die Opferfrau einer Kristina Söderbaum und auch nicht die kumpelhafte Landserbraut einer Ilse Werner. Sybille Schmitz gehorchte keinem Typ. Sie war vor allem sie selbst.
