The vast majority came after the Great Famine in search of a dream or simply to survive. As their descendents we now yearn to know all that we can about these Celtic pilgrims. We may have discovered a birth date a marriage record or the place where they lived but little more. We are left to imagine what rituals and routines filled their lives each day -- their dreams and desires their fears and foibles their sins and celebrations. THE VIEW FROM SHANTY POND opens a door to that forgotten world. Touch your Irish past. Come visit your ancestors in Shanty Pond.". INSCRIBED / SIGNED by the AUTHOR. First Edition. Hard Cover. This copy has been signed by the author with an inscription on the front endpaper. This book is in Very Good condition and has self-wrappers cardboard covers with a semi-attached dust jacket. The book and its contents are in clean bright condition. There is noticeable toning to the spine joints and all edges of the book covers. The book covers have some beginning spotting and foxing. The text pages are clean and bright. The front innner hinge has started to crack. This copy has been signed by the author with an inscription on the front endpaper. There is also a second gift notation on the front endpaper as well. "Fanny and Robert were married in May 1880. She was 40; he was 29. He said that he was "a mere complication of cough and bones much fitter for an emblem of mortality than a bridegroom." He travelled with his new wife and her son Lloyd north of San Francisco to Napa Valley and spent a summer honeymoon at an abandoned mining camp on Mount Saint Helena today designated Robert Louis Stevenson State Park. He wrote about this experience in The Silverado Squatters. He met Charles Warren Stoddard co-editor of the Overland Monthly and author of South Sea Idylls who urged Stevenson to travel to the South Pacific an idea which returned to him many years later. In August 1880 he sailed with Fanny and Lloyd from New York to Britain and found his parents and his friend Sidney Colvin on the wharf at Liverpool happy to see him return home. Gradually his wife was able to patch up differences between father and son and make herself a part of the family through her charm and wit. " from Wikipedia ; Signed by Author .
