brossura Salvatore Morelli, importantissima anche se non sufficientemente conosciuta figura dell'area riformista italiana, opera e scrive nella seconda metà dell'ottocento. Le sue poderose riflessioni si concentrano sulle disuguaglianze sociali, storico-culturali, che penalizzano e sviliscono la figura femminile. Nelle pagine dei suoi scritti, più volte lo studioso e politico pugliese di Carovigno fa osservare come sia del tutto ingiustificato, disutile e antieconomico il processo discriminatorio nei confronti della donna. Ha una visione economica, sociale e umana oltremodo moderna. Focalizzare l'attenzione sui diritti umani e dar voce alle donne e ai più deboli della società per lui è una priorità sociale oltreché un dovere morale. È stato tra i più moderni e cosmopoliti degli italiani; è stato un pioniere con le sue concezioni addirittura avveniristiche - alcuni parlavano di utopia - per quel che riguardava il concetto della donna e del suo importante ruolo nella società; aveva uno sguardo che andava oltre l'orizzonte del tempo. Le proposte di Morelli, come si vedrà, erano in anticipo di circa cento anni, infatti per vederle realizzate bisognerà aspettare il nuovo diritto di famiglia del 1975: è stato un profeta inascoltato. Le donne, cui vuol dare i diritti che spettano loro, sono le donne invece cancellate dal Codice unitario. Morelli si fa portavoce delle rivendicazioni delle femministe italiane che non possono parlare in aula. Alcuni suoi spunti sulla condizione femminile e il sistema giuridico normativo che lo suggella paiono a un lettore frettoloso utopistici e irrealizzabili, ma se si guarda con più attenzione si scopre che il deputato italiano recupera con le sue proposte pensieri antichi e blasonati che si snodano fra "La Repubblica" di Platone, l'"Utopia" di More e "La Città del Sole" di Campanella. Riletta oggi, la posizione di Morelli è più facilmente condivisibile ma negli anni in cui veniva espressa rappresentava una profonda rivoluzione copernicana dei sistemi sociali. Emerge, nell'intellettuale pugliese, la centralità della riflessione come autostrada introspettiva che obbliga a fare i conti con se stessi e con le nostre conoscenze. Riscoprire oggi la figura di Salvatore Morelli significa anche ricordare un'Italia piena di contraddizioni che cercava di riunire sotto uno stesso tetto tante piccole Italie, una diversa dall'altra per tradizioni, idiomi, economia e politica.

There is some foxing and toning to the front free page. "Deacon Walter Colton b. 25 August 1764 Longmeadow Hampden Massachusetts d. 28 April 1862 Georgia Vermont. He was the son of Deacon Aaron Colton and Mary Ely. He married Thankful Cobb daughter of Lieut. John Cobb of Hardwick Massachusetts she died 7 June 1843."He was a man of naturally moral fibre passionately fond of music and proficient in its art and science his violincello was for a half century a great factor in the village church choir and a source of great pleasure and elevation in the home circle. He loved good literature and had a keen sense of the beautiful and pure in good books and cultivated a fine literary taste up to the measure of his opportunity and means." This book gives both biographical material and thoughts on his life as a deacon. The book includes information on the early days of the area of Georgia Vermont. Interestingly one of the sons responsible for this memorial book became famous for his introduction of Nitrous Oxide for use in dental procedures: "Intially nitrous oxide laughing gas was exhibited by Gardner Quincy Colton as a novelty demonstrating its mirth-provoking effects. It's value as a dental anaesthetic was recognized by Dr. Horace Wells who adopted its use in his dental practice though its use did not spread at that time. Eventually it was Colton though not a dentist himself who popularized its use in dentistry to replace the more risky method of using chloroform and ether. Cloth wrinkled edge-rubbed lightly soiled & scuffed. Carries old donation bookplate. Binding shaken; else good condition. Colum 1881-1972 was an Irish-American author and poet. Born in Longford Ireland he was active in the Irish literary renaissance and helped found the famous Abbey Theatre. He married in 1912 and moved with his family to New York in 1914. They relocated to France in the 1930s where Colum renewed his friendship with James Joyce and for whom he typed parts of 'Finnegan's Wake'. On returning to America he taught comparative literature at Columbia University and became an American citizen in 1945. 'My Irish Year' is composed of studies made while the author was living among the people of the Midlands and the West of Ireland. 'It is not representative of the whole of Ireland: Catholic and Peasant Ireland only is shown localized in a strip of country crossing the Midlands to the West.' 'The life described may stand for the life of the Catholic peasantry. And the Catholic peasantry are not merely the bulk of the Irish population; they are roughly speaking the historic Irish nation' from the author's Introduction. The book is divided into four Parts the final one of which deals with 'The Crisis in Ireland'. The author was clearly a republican and eschews the control which England then exerted over Irish life and government. In this and in the experssion of his sentiments he clearly antecedes 'the Troubles' only a few years' hence. This is the first American edition this title also having been published in Great Britain by Mills and Boon 1912. It is a very scarce title by an important Irish American author playwright and poet.
