No dustwrapper spine and the top and outer half-inch of blue cloth-covered boards are a bit discoloured by old pipe-tobacco smoke but there is only a faint not unpleasant smell. Gilt titles on spine and gilt crest on front board are both still bright. Minor bumping to spine ends and corners of boards some browning to outer edges of pages otherwise a good clean tight copy of this hard-cover book. A biography using his own surviving letters and papers of Admiral Sir William Cornwallis who served in the Royal Navy from 1758 until his retirement in 1806. 527pp 8 b&w plates. First Edition. 1909 ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT JOURNAL DETAILING A BRITISH LEGATION MISSION TO MEET THE SULTAN OF MOROCCO
GIBRALTAR TANGIERS FEZ MOROCCO. Very Good. 1909. On offer is a simply sensational seventeen 17 page handwritten original journal detailing a British Legation mission of some importance to meet with the Sultan of Morocco in 1909. This 100 year old coverless folio sized journal is an account of a political mission most likely from April 19 1909 to December 1909. Historians and collectors of the World War I era and the history running up to the 'Great War' and of North Africa will acknowledge this was a critical period of Moroccan history when European countries were trying to influence Morocco. One online source claims: "The first years of the 20th century witnessed a rush of diplomatic maneuvering through which the European powers and France in particular furthered their interests in North Africa. Disputes over Moroccan sovereignty were links in the chain of events that led to World War I." In a strong neat hand our author Corporal Stanley R.A.M.C. Medical Orderly reports just such a mission and he begins with a list of all the members of the mission; the Minister the Hon. R. Lister a Doctor Major C.E.P. Fowler Military Attache Colonel Count Albert Edward Wilfred Gleichen who appears to have published Journal of our Mission to Fez 1909 By the Military Attaché London: Harrison & Sons 1909 and a number of other WWI related books that may very well have come from this manuscript or his own parallel journal wives secretaries attaches valets/grooms etc. This is an absolutely stunning record of the trip with the commentary beginning on Gibraltar then on to Tangiers and then Fez. Along the way Stanley notes many mishaps of early exotic travel; wild camel attack causing multiple injuries and a broken leg insurgent attacks shootings deserters storms visiting royalty . Living in tents and traveling across deserts this is very well written by an intelligent keen observer and in many ways typical British soldier and citizen who has a great handle on the written language of the day. Some of the super commentary includes Corp. Stanley's description of a presentation of gifts to the Sultan wherein the Minister gifted the Sultan a beautiful gold Bulldog statue. In return the Sultan gifts a moth eaten camel blanket a rogue stallion that was returned due to its wildness and further embarrassed the company by not giving the traditional gift of a curved silver knife to all members. The Corporal's disdain for the event drips from the page. This is fascinating relic of British colonial times and the global politics pre World War I. 1943 PERSONAL HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT BATTLE DIARY OF AN AMERICAN INFANTRYMAN
North Africa Italy Europe. Fair. 1943. Corporal Joseph Engelhardt scrupulously writes over 55 pages in an address book converted into a diary full from A - L of his journey from North Africa to Italy in the late summer of 1943 through to June of 1944. Battles troop movements anectodal observations and much more. Engelhardt is a keen observer and exhibits a fair bit of charm as he shares his thoughts and opinions. This is a down to earth yet cocky and brassy the young man is writing from a grunt's eye view; a soldier of the 34th Infantry Division 168th Infantry Regiment the famed "Red Bull" and "Deset Bull" divisions that helped beat the Germans in North Africa and opened the door for the invasion of Italy that this very same soldier took part in. The regimental motto is 'ATTACK ATTACK ATTACK'. This diary begins with his account of North Africa time in Oran and then onto Italy. He writes of his pals killed in action the wounded and he suffers wounds too. In a very moving passage he makes a note to himself to write 'Nana' but not to tell her he is in the hospital again. He also writes of personal matters; girls back home girls in Europe. In one personal passage he writes of receiving a letter from a girlfriend - "Got a letter from June which I didn't go for. She isn't going to tie me down to unhappiness after what I've been through!!" Stunning to consider this man's placement in World War II history and that he so carefully wrote of his times thoughts and adventures. I'll quote from his last charming entry; June 1944 "Everything set to leave. Still awaiting on furlong papers. Am I on edge!! Damn this waiting!!" Condition wise the book's exterior has been repaired with tape along the spine. Contemporary parchment with blind-stamped decoration; lacking clasps. Engraved title page and initials. Inscribed on front free endpaper: "Presented from Poe Kurz at Shelby October 29th 76." An earlier inscription at lower edge of title page with oval stamp over it of Bibliotheca C.SS. R. Ilchester Maryland. Small embossed stamp on title page verso and last page of text of Bibliotheca St. Alphonsus Esopus N.Y. A biographical work in prose and poetry by Cornelis de Corte 1590-1638 about St. Nicholas of Tolentino c. 1246-1305. Scarce.
