br. La vicenda di Marco Antonio appartiene alla storia dei vinti. La sua condotta fu diffamata con accanimento dagli antagonisti politici, Cicerone prima e Ottaviano poi; la sua memoria, dopo la morte, fu oggetto di sistematica rimozione in attuazione di un provvedimento del senato; la sua figura fu consegnata ai posteri inquinata dalla manipolazione del vincitore, il futuro Augusto: ne emerse l'immagine di un abile generale romano, soggiogato però dall'amore per la regina d'Egitto Cleopatra, corrotto dalla depravazione dell'Oriente, caduto preda degli eccessi di vino, cibo, lusso, sesso. A dispetto di tale deformazione, la documentazione superstite ci restituisce il profilo di una personalità politica animata da una progettualità innovativa. Nel contesto pubblico l'adesione al progetto cesariano e l'empatia nei confronti dei ceti popolari maturarono in una visione politica che intendeva conciliare le istituzioni della repubblica romana praticabili in Occidente con gli assetti delle monarchie ellenistiche a conduzione dinastica, proprie delle province orientali; a tale impostazione, ispirata a flessibilità e diversificazione, si coniugarono il rispetto, la valorizzazione e l'accoglienza degli usi e costumi del mosaico di popoli che componevano l'impero. Nell'ambito privato egli oppose un consapevole rifiuto delle convenzioni. Ad una esistenza consacrata, secondo le tradizioni, alla morigeratezza, alla sobrietà, allo spirito di sacrificio, all'impegno per l'interesse collettivo, egli contrappose un modello di vita che riservasse spazio ai piaceri individuali: le gioie dell'amore, l'ebrezza del vino, le raffinate prelibatezze della tavola, l'apprezzamento per ogni forma d'arte, la propensione per il lusso, la complicità cameratesca, la solidarietà con l'elemento femminile.
