M HARWELL, ROYAL MARINE [?]
1875 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT JOURNAL AND LOG BOOK OF A NINE MONTH VOYAGE TO INDIA ABOARD THE ROYAL YACHT SERAPIS WITH HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS PRINCE EDWARD
ASEA ABOARD THE HMS ROYAL YACHT SERAPIS TO INDIA. Good. 1875. On offer is a superb manuscript relic of Victorian Era travel detailing a well documented trip by H R H Prince Edward and various dignitaries to India traveling by way of HMS Royal Yacht Serapis. The journal of the trip begins with the author we believe to be M. Harwell Royal Marine as was marked the chest from which this manuscript was rescued though we note a later childish hand circa 1900s wrote the name of Kenneth Ellicott among other scribbles and drawings a later relative we suspect being based on a hulk in Portsmouth awaiting the ship being prepared for the 9 month voyage. Researchers and historians of Victorian travel or the global politics and commerce behind this trip will relish the large folio sized 12½ x 8½ inch 86 well filled pages with super detail by this crew man giving good account of movements of crew HRH visitors deaths accidents in harbor receiving gifts such as ostriches. M HENSLEY
1936 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HAND WRITTEN BY A KEEN EYED WELL READ AND EDUCATED YOUNG WOMAN TEACHING IN THE BURNSVILLE AND ASHEVILLE AREA
ASHEVILLE NORTH CAROLINA. Fair. 1936. On offer is an interesting diary of a young woman living in the far western reaches of North Carolina's mountainous Appalachian region. The diary is in fair condition. The spine has broken but all save the first page remain sewn in. The diary measures 5 1/2 inches by 4 inches and has 356 pages. There are entries for all of 1936 and the first 2 1/2 months of 1937. The handwriting is fairly legible. The only identification of the author is the inscription M. Hensley on the frontispiece. From context we learn that she is a young woman who lives at home and teaches in a local school somewhere close to Burnsville NC. Her life is taken up with activities involving her teaching and some socializing with friends. She makes frequent trips to Burnsville for education activities and goes to Asheville with friends for shopping and entertainment. She reads extensively e.g. Pearl Buck's The Exile enjoys listening to classical music on the radio piano concert by Mozart Metropolitan Opera Company broadcast of Carmen and seeing performances in Ashville such as Tale of Two Cities and Mutiny on the Bounty. She is certainly aware of things happening in the wider world. For example: ". news of a new kidnapping case 10 yr old Chas Mattson." Jan 5 1937. This refers to the famous Mattson child kidnapping in Tacoma WA in December 1936. It was news across the United States and ended unfortunately in the murder of that child - something she noted in her Jan 15th entry. "Read an account of Bruno Hauptmann's execution. I was among one of the many Americans who hoped in vain for a reprieve. The sensational crime is unsolved to my mind." Apr 4 1936. The 'sensational crime' that she is referring to is the kidnapping and murder of Charles Lindbergh's son in 1932. "The world is all agog over the abdication of King Edward. Ah romance is still alive in the 20th century. Or is it really romance - no-one knows save the abdicated King" Dec 10 1936. One of the most poignant series of entries occurs in April 1936 when she learns of the sudden death of a very close friend: "A letter from Dan brought the dreadful news - the breath-taking news of Emma's sudden death. I am unable to realize it. I can't comprehend it. I rebel against her being taken from me - who loved her as devotedly - my dearest of friends! Why!" Apr 11 1936. "Wretched day. How miserable I feel - I walked 3 miles - Oh Emma if you could only come back to me! How I love you darling. How can I go on without you - my heart is broken so" Apr 12 1936. The raw emotions and feeling lift off the page and transform this diary from a dusty recollection of words from years gone by and breathe life into this indistinct image of a young school teacher in rural North Carolina. A social historian or a researcher into women's studies would find this diary quite valuable in examining life in a small rural area of North Carolina particularly as it was written by an educated and observant young woman.; Manuscript; 24mo - over 5" - 5¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF M. M JAY FLANNERY
1888 - 1918 SUPER NEAR COMPLETE ADULT LIFE ORIGINAL DIARY GROUPING OF THIRTEEN 13 NOTEBOOKS HANDWRITTEN BY AN ANTIOCH COLLEGE PROFESSOR DEDICATED TO HIS PROFESSION AND HIS COMMUNITY
Yellow Springs Ohio. Good. 1888. On offer is a fascinating collection of diaries written by Professor M. Jay Flannery an educator at the turn of the 19th century in central Ohio. Born in 1857 he secured a position teaching at Antioch College in Yellow Springs OH just south of Springfield. He died in 1920. The diaries take the form of 13 notebooks measuring approximately 6 3/4 inches by 4 inches and one smaller volume measuring 5 1/4 by 3 3/4 inches. The books volumes contain about 120 pages each and are essentially 100% complete. The smaller volume is about 50% complete. The books are in very good condition and the writing is quite legible. Flannery writes extensively about everyday events commenting on school life personal and other professional matters: "Mrs Foster went away this morning. In school all day. School good. . A number of girls stayed to prepare for Democrat rally in Osborne tonight. Big Democrat torch-light procession from here to Osborne . We had a meeting at the schoolhouse tonight to organize a Teachers' Reading Circle. . we will read 4 chapters of a Guide to Health. Harry had a tooth ache tonight and broke his tooth trying to pull it" Fri Oct 19 1888. "Thanksgiving! No school as this is a holiday. Beal brought the bookcase and other things about noon and Dillinger and I worked hard the rest of the day putting it up putting the bureau upstairs changing things around in the room changing books etc. I sent my examination lists to the printer today. I used old ones. Uncle Joe died about 6 o'clock this morning. I suppose the masons will bury him ." Thurs Nov 29 1888. In October 1894 he pastes in a lengthy newspaper clipping referencing something he wrote. The article hints at the tensions that existed at Antioch College between several groups involved in the running of the College. "Got a letter from Sister today. She says that ma is not well. Took 's picture down to Miller the photographer to have a small better picture made from it . This has been a rather pleasant day" Wed Feb 5 1900. He notes political events that happening commenting on Cleveland's election as president in Nov 1888 and McKinley's assassination September 1901. He continued working in education teaching writing and publishing. At one point he was elected superintendent of the local school system: "Anne and I came tp Springfield this morning. This morning I received some copies of the New England Journal of Education for Sept 25 containing as its leading article my paper The Lure of the City. Last night I attended a meeting of The Chautauqua and was elected Secretary and Chairman of the Executive Committee ." Sat Oct 4 1919. Taken as a whole these diaries paint a picture of a man who is committed to his profession and his community. Because of the span of years they cover these diaries offer a historian or researcher an excellent longitudinal view. The diaries cover the following time periods: Oct - Dec 1888; Oct - Jan 1894-95; June - Oct 1898; Jan - Apr and Aug - Dec 1899; Dec - Mar 1899-1900; Mar - July and July - Oct 1900; Apr - June and July - Sept 1901; Oct - Jan 1901-02; Jan - May and May - Oct 1902; Aug - Sept 1918-19.; Manuscript; 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF 19TH CENTURY 1880s 1890s 1900s 1910S GILDED AGE PROGRESSIVE ERA UNITED STATES OHIO GREEN COUNTY YELLOW SPRINGS M.
