Barbier ne cite que la réponse à ces mémoires par Saint-Brémond. (Barbier III, 204). Maria Mancini (1639-1715), una donna astrologa 380 anni fa, il 28 agosto 1639, nasceva a Roma da nobile famiglia Maria Mancini, una fra le pochissime donne dedite all’astrologia e comunque l’unica della quale siano pervenute opere astrologiche scritte. Nel 1676, a Colonia, per i tipi di Pierre Marteau, apparvero le sue memorie apocrife dal titolo “Mémoires de M.L.P.M.M. [Madame La Princesse Marie Mancini, N.d.A] Colonne G. Connétable du Royaume de Naples” , dove ovviamente veniva calcata la mano sulle vicende più piccanti della sua vita in special modo coniugale.

br. Il volume è dedicato alla figura di Adele Alfieri di Sostegno (1857-1936), finora del tutto trascurata dalla storiografia. Figlia di Carlo Alfieri e Giuseppina di Cavour, Adele intrattenne una fitta corrispondenza con Pasquale Villari dal 1888 al 1917, anno in cui quest'ultimo morì. Il carteggio, riportato e analizzato nel volume, evidenzia un rapporto molto confidenziale e profondo fra la famiglia Alfieri, l'Istituto "Cesare Alfieri" e Villari, figura centrale degli indirizzi scientifici e didattici assunti dalla Scuola dopo la scomparsa di Carlo. Ma soprattutto dalle lettere emerge preponderante l'immagine di una donna autonoma, coraggiosa, capace e caritatevole che viaggiò per l'Italia e l'Europa, senza risparmiarsi per promuovere attività di solidarietà sociale verso gli emigranti e i più deboli in particolare nella Calabria sconvolta dal terremoto.
