Dr Charles Thomas Gnewuch
1953-1990 Travel Diary of a Wisconsin Chemistry Professors Two Incredible Outdoor Adventures At Ages 15 and 52
Milwaukee Wisconsin WI. Good with no dust jacket. Hardcover. On offer is an interesting journal with entries separated by nearly forty years. It includes a reference toanother of the unique historical and true legends of the west. The journal belonged to Dr. Charles Thomas Gnewuch 1938-2020. He was born to parents Charles and Dorothy Ahern Gnewuch and graduated from St. Mary Springs Academy in Fond du Lac WI. He earned a PhD in Chemistry at Georgetown University and became a university professor ending his career at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. His focus as a university educator and researcher was in the area of medicinal chemistry with an emphasis on anti-cancer agents. Outside of his professional work he was a gifted musician being heavily involved with the Green Lake Festival of Music. Gnewuch enjoyed a late-in-life marriage in 1999 to Julie Ann Lickteig. Julie cared for him as he lost partial use of his legs due to transverse myelitis. This journal is unique in that it contains details of an outdoors trip with his father Charles when he was 15 years old and a second trip in 1990 when he was 52. The diary also contains two photocopies of photographs taken at the Vagabond Ranch in Colorado a wilderness ranch still in operation today. The first trip was taken in 1953 along with his father. Together they travelled to join a larger group of campers with whom they set off on a cross-country adventure to a ranch in Colorado. He keeps detailed notes of each day and the flavour of the trip shines through: Got up at 7-15 and made bed. Ate breakfast. Packed extra socks . And sleeping bag in trailer and back of Chrysler. Started to Cheyenne at 10-30 or 10-40. . Finally camped near an amusement park not far from the rodeo grounds . Ate dinner on park bench. Before this we tried to go swimming in a lake nearby but the lake was closed to swimming Reason Water was so polluted and stagnant from lack of rain. . July 21 1953. He makes reference to both the Shepp and Bemis ranches in Idaho and the legendary history of Polly Benis. Got up around 6: 00 . Had the trout for breakfast. . Pack up and were on our way at 9-45 A. M. We saw some more deserted cabins. . The homesteads were a product of the Depression. . The Bemis and Shep Ranch. Bemis was shot during a poker game and a Chinese slave girl nursed him back to health. Benis took her to the ranch near the river. They were married and they lived together until they died
Aug 10 1953. . We started on the last leg of our journey at 9-00 A. M. We went through some good-sized rapids. At one rapids Dad and & I got out of the boat and got pictures
Aug 11 1953. Barely a page after the description of this trip as a youth Gnewuch begins a journal of a trip he took in 1990 from Fond du Lac WI to the southern states. At that time he was 52 years old and in the middle of a very successful career as a university professor and researcher. Unlike the first trip description this one does not bring him full-circle to his home but rather ends abruptly in Jackson MS. It is also a much shorter account. He begins on April 5th 1990 leaving Fond du Lac WI and driving to Cairo I. Its a succinct entry with a descriptive comment about Cairo: . Cairo is a poor town at the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. Down along the levi of the Ohio River Apr 5 1990. In Memphis his love of music comes through in his comments: .In evening went to Beale Street to listen to blues and jazz. Enjoyed listening to a jazz band at blank. All black musicians and a black female vocalist. Walked to the Peabody Hotel to listen to an old Negro pianist at the lounge. He played a boogie woogie number for me and he was very good with the blues
Apr 6 1990. The record of this trip extends another few days before ending abruptly when he is in Vicksburg Mississippi. This is a fine example of a look at an early formative experience in a successful mans life as he kept his childhood journal well into his adult life only to use it again to record another similar experience. The book is a travel journal and measures 6.5 inches by 4.0 inches. It contains 88 pages plus reference pages and is 50% complete. The cover is padded and it and the spine are in good condition. The pages are in good condition and the handwriting is legible. ; Manuscripts; 16mo 6" - 7" tall; 88 pages; Signed by Author . hardcover

DR HARRY H BAKER
1910 - 1911 ORIGINAL ARCHIVE OF TWO 2 MANUSCRIPT DIARIES DETAILING THE LIFE AND ILLNESS OF A BROOKLYN DOCTOR FROM DIAGNOSIS TO DEATH
BROOKLYN NEW YORK CHICAGO ILLINOIS. Good. 1910. On offer is a very interesting archive of two 2 handwritten diaries and 14 early photos handwritten by Dr. Harry H. Baker of Brooklyn New York and at one time Chicago Illinois. The diaries relate specifically to his life and practice but of particular note are entries detailing his own illness from diagnosis to death. In fact he writes right up until the last week of his life. Historians researchers and collectors of medical writings of a personal and intimate nature will find this a unique perspective within the two small leather bound diaries that the doctor kept in 1910 and 1911. He lived at 480 East 19th Street Brooklyn New York. He kept careful daily recordings of his activities. Beginning in June 1910 through December he begins detailed records of his visits to the doctor and he gets a diagnosis of Mitral Stenosis. He reports frequently afterwards on symptoms and medication. He keeps up a lively social schedule through the rest of the year. The 1911 diary continues with the details of his medical condition as well as social visits. He records driving his auto and taking a doctor who was afraid to drive on his calls. In fact he seems to love taking people for a ride in his auto no matter the weather no matter how bad he feels. His condition worsens in April of 1911 and he requires a nurse at home. Perhaps the same nurse who is represented in group of photos that came with these diaries He is bedridden and the diary ends May 7th. Research suggests he died only a few days later on May 12th. He sensed his oncoming death because at the end of April he makes out and signs a new will. Here are some snippets: 1910 "June 20th Began Digalon again. 5 qts. B's d. First since 4/9. 10 weeks. Legs swollen worst since came from Ohio. Did not go down at night as formerly." "July 7th Dig. 5 qts. Demonstration of Overland with Dr. F. When talking with Mr. Silver on curb felt faint. Lay down for almost 40-45 minutes. Better." "July 13th Mr. Silver agreed to make me a special agent for Overland on 10 percent commission and sell me a car at special reduced price and give me prospect to follow up. Watch 52 seconds slow." "July 30th Called on Mrs. Krause Bismarck Hotel Chicago. "Ed" Moved. "Isn't she a luscious piece of flesh" Fannie to Mrs. Clarke music teacher about Helen. Left 1934 Sedg. About 1 mo ago. H. " Enhancing the narrative are related photographs showing Dr. Baker from childhood as a baby only 4 months and on into his adult years. There are 9 photos of him all have his name on the back and some even his address at the time and the date. Two are duplicates but the rest were taken during the various stages of his life. On the back of one it says "6239 Monroe Ave. Hyde Park Chicago Ill. 1st Practicing medicine." One photo states: "Nurse. Mrs. Annis. 1908 or 1909." The other photos show his father and mother: The Rev. and Mrs. Ephraim Baker. Two of the CVDs are of Rev. Ephraim Baker at different ages. Then the younger man's photo was made by J.W. Clark Mendota Illinois the older man was made by Soderberg Sutton Nebraska. His wife was Janet or Jeanette Whitney. There is a photo of her as an attractive young woman with her hair dressed with long curl on her shoulder. The photographer was J.W. Clark. The Cabinet photo shows her as an older woman and there is no photographer named. According to family research both people graduated from Oberlin College. They were the parents of Dr. H.H. Baker. The 1910 diary measures about 2 ½" x 4" and the 1911 diary measures about 2 ¾" x 5 ¼". Both the diaries and photos are in good shape. ; Manuscript; 32mo - over 4" - 5" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF HARRY H. DR JOHN ARTHUR WILSON
1922 1928 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARIES HANDWRITTEN BY ONE OF AMERICA'S MOST NOTED CHEMISTS
Milwaukee Wisconsin WI. Very Good. 1922. On offer are original 1922 and 1928 manuscript diaries handwritten by noted chemist Dr. John Arthur Wilson. Dr. Wilson was one of the most distinguished chemists in America at the time and was so renowned that his scientific articles and papers were translated into many foreign languages and published in scientific journals throughout the world. These diaries detail and document his busy business and social life: he writes of working in his lab writing his book doing research going to Jones Island attending matinees giving lectures at different universities attending many dinners & meetings related to work. He writes of having lunch at Pfister and going to the Athletic Club. He frequently "called on the folks in the evening". A highlight of this diary is when he writes daily about a vacation to California on the Gold State Limited train. The trip lasted from June 3 to June 25 1922. Here are some snippets: January 26 1922: "Had luncheon at the Pfister with Statton Copeland and Steisig. Discussed problems pertaining to the experimental work at Jones Island." The American Leather Chemistry Association was founded in 1903. In 1959 Salem Oil & Grease Company established and financed a memorial lecture as a memorial to Dr. Wilson to be given at each annual meeting of the ALCA. It was designated as the "John Arthur Wilson Memorial Lecture" with awards still being given out today. Both of these diaries are in excellent condition for their age with tight clean pages no marks rips tears or loose binding and no musty smells. DR SWEPSON J BROOKS
1912 - 1915 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT TRIP AND TRAVEL DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A DEDICATED YACHT RACING DENTIST AND ALL AROUND 'OLD SALT'
HARRISON NEW YORK WESTCHESTER COUNTY BLOCK ISLAND. Good. 1912. On offer is a super original 1912 - 1915 manuscript relic of one man's utter dedication to sailing and yacht racing. Dr. Swepson J. Brooks of Harrison New York in Westchester County from August 1912 to March 1915 keeps a remarkable travel diary detailing his sailing sometimes motor boat trips. As he states at the outset: "An account of my wanderings by sea chiefly in the good ketch Sindbad". The 150 page book begins with a first voyage that appears to be Long Island Sound oriented and it soon becomes evident that Swepson is a real salt and a dedicated highly experienced sailor and captain. Position weather and wind all recorded faithfully along with a rousing narrative of all the ship and mates encounter. The work as a whole shows a man who as early in April as he can takes his boat out whether for his personal pleasure or to represent his yacht club. In 1913 he details a renowned area race between April 9th and June 18th 1913; he titles the section: Log of "Saxon" Block Island Race June 21 1913 under Edward G. Faile with Brooks as Mate". They only made the middle of the pack as we note in the clippings about the race and results which are tipped in. His voyages continue on his own boat with other trips to 1915 which includes a New York to Florida race. DR WILL P SHERIDAN and MRS MARY W P SHERIDAN
1909 1910 & 1911 ARCHIVE OF THREE 3 MANUSCRIPT JOURNALS AND DIARIES OF TWO DEDICATED CANADIAN MISSIONARIES BRINGING WESTERN HEALTH CARE AND CHRISTIAN OUTREACH TO THE SICHUAN PROVINCES WITH THE BACK DROP OF SUN YAT-SEN AND THE REVOLUTION
CHENGTU SICHUAN PROVINCE CHINA. Good. 1909. On offer is a simply super archive of three 3 historically significant manuscript diaries and journals authored and handwritten by Dr. Will P. Sheridan and his wife Mary W.P. dated 1909 1910 and 1911. Curiously inscribed noting that the diary is primarily Will's but Mary does the actual writing. The largish two-days to a page Grand & Toy 8½ x 7 inch journal style books sent by Toronto friend Ethel Cassidy are filled with this extraordinary Canadian missionary and doctor's narrative while in China at the C.M.M. General Hospital Chengtu. Rarely missing days though the 1911 book was delivered to China late but pages from another notebook are enclosed. The writings run from the mundane duties of daily life observations regarding Chinese medical methods comparing Western methods and all matters of day to day life like their 4th Wedding Anniversary on Oct. 16th 1911 their baby Virginia adoringly referred to as 'Little Girl Baby' plus almost daily fully written descriptions and opinions of this couple with a keen observant eye and obviously accomplished diarists. Adding a superb depth to the breadth of their mission are a number of ephemeral pieces including letter copies notes financials lists of visitors Christmas gifts recipes newspaper cuttings and Chinese Imperial decrees etc. etc. provide for an extraordinary detailed look into Christian outreach in China at the very moment of China's move into the Modern Era from just before the Wuchang Uprising and the ascendancy of Sun Yat-Sen. Dr William Ian Beardmore (Wib) Beveridge
1938-1939 Diary and Academic Notes of the Scientist Who Discovered the Cause of the Swine Flu That Caused the Spanish Flu Pandemic
United States Canada Mexico. Very Good with no dust jacket. Softcover. On offer are notes and a journal of one of the worlds preeminent pathologists Dr. William Ian Beardmore WIB Beveridge 1908-2006 known as the man who found the cause of the great epidemic. Beveridge identified the origin of the world-wide Spanish Influenza epidemic of 1918-1919. SEE BIO NOTES AT END OF LISTING. The journal is a record of two time periods that WIB spent in the United States. The larger section describes a road trip that Beveridge took with his family in the United States after relocating there from Australia. The smaller portion describes another trip taken following a conference he attended. Tipped into the journal are handwritten speaking notes from a 1951 academic address he gave at Oxford University on The Art of Research and a 1956 academic address he gave at Cambridge University called How Discoveries Are Made. There is also a photograph and some foreign exchange documents connected to his travel expenses. These presentations outline the thought processes of one of the great medical research minds of his time. The first part of the diary begins June 1 1938 where he notes that he Left Princeton and indicates that he his wife and his son John are traveling with him. His professional interests are never far from hand as he takes time to visit labs or universities. He visits the Connecticut State Serum Labs on June 10. On June 14 he spends the day in Fort Collins CO and the morning at Vet School talking to Dr. Newsom. After lunch saw Vet Hospital very good but small
. On July 22 he visits UC Berkeley where he sees the agricultural department and tours the campus. He found Berkeley to have fine buildings and grounds but not large
12000 students who attend
. The next day WIB drives to the Davis campus to meet Dr. Cameron at the Animal Health section of the Agric. Faculty of Univ of Calif. . On Sept 12 WIB visits Cornell University: Saw Dean WA Hagan and saw
new Moore building
also met Duhes the physiologist and Al the pathologist and others. This place seems more devoted to teaching than research
. On Sept 14 he visited Yale on the 15th Princeton. He comments on those he met and what he observed at both. In 1939 WIB picks up again in June detailing another trip. At the back of the diary are an additional collection of pages from Fall of 1939 where WIB discusses attending a conference on Microbials and his activities afterward being another road trip in the USA. Beveridge is a great diarist giving the reader intelligent insight into his journey describing in detail everything from the topography he views on hikes to his perspectives on the cities he visits. He travels widely across the USA goes into Mexico briefly and spends some time in Western Canada as he makes his way back east. He is an intelligent traveler making time for interesting stops such as a tour at a Ford plant in Detroit. A couple excerpts give the flavour: Took recently opened scenic coast route made Pat sick! . Very fine road along mountainside which rises straight from the sea. Country fairly barren - dry grass but some
green trees till Big Sur where we saw our first Redwoods all along the coast from S. Barbara. Often foggy and cool to cold off and on all day. Passed through Salinas just as the big rodeo was closing and went all traffic. Night at San Jose July 17 1938. Went into Chicago and did some shopping at Marshal and Fields then left town about 4: 30pm. Hot muggy day today although weather has been cool lately - cold last four nights. Traffic out of town very heaty. Drive through 2 or 3 miles of negro residential area - all negros. Night at Michigan City at Hotel Sept 6 1938. The final item in this small collection is an undated photograph of four men - obviously friends and possibly colleagues walking along a path. We believe one of the individuals shown is William Beveridge. The photograph has no annotations. This is an absolute must for the collection of any researcher or science-minded person wanting to own the insights of a brilliant mind. Through his writing we get to know Beveridge as a husband and father as well as gaining understanding of his passion for academia and research. This 6-ring binder measures approximately 7.0 inches by 4.25 inches and contains 2 groups of loose leaf pages 1 section with 168 pages and a 2nd section with 18 pages. The journal is about 50-55% complete with entries written usually on 1 side only. The covers are in good condition as are the pages. The handwriting is legible. BIO NOTES: WIB was born in Australia in 1908 and studied veterinary science. After graduation he focused his efforts on research working in the leading veterinary research facility in the country. In 1937 he moved to the United States to continue his research work at the Rockefeller Institute in New York. There he studied and researched the swine influenza virus. With a colleague he proved that this virus was identical to the virus that caused the 1918-1919 flu pandemic that world-wide killed an estimated 50 million people. It is considered one of the most deadly pandemics in recorded history. Following this work he moved to Cambridge University where he established their Veterinary school. He built a distinguished career. He was President of the World Veterinary Association for 18 years and published widely in scientific journals. ; Manuscripts; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 128 pages; Signed by Author . paperback

Dr. Diwakar Minz
The Martyrs of Jharkhand
ABOUT THE BOOK:- The Present book "Martyrs of Jharkhand" is an important chapter in the history of Jharkhand. The learned writer has not only gathered primary information about these martyrs by going to their areas but also collected necessary knowledge from the archives of several States and Commissionaires to establish their actual history. This effort is clearly reflected in the book. The previous writers had termed these incidents as insurrection which had been against Hindus, money lenders, contractors, landlords, but opposing rule which he has presented through factual analysis and indepth review along with historical proof. After two decades of Company Govt., for the first time, the tribals stood up in revolt against its wrong revenue policy pertaining to water, forests and land which had hurt the economic, social and religious feelings of the tribals. The writer has effectively revealed the history of the renouncement and sacrifices of these martyrs who have been the victim of anonymity in the freedom struggle.
