‎Downie, Jill‎

‎Storming the Castle: The World of Dora and the Duchess‎

‎"...tells the colourful, upstairs/downstairs saga of two remarkable, unsung women of the Edwardian era, whose lives would intersect in Canada at that era's precipitous end. While the ninth Duchess of Devonshire and her cook were born to as different destinies as can be imagined, those destinies were forged in a singular historical moment. These were the last, golden days of Empire, remembered as much for their splendour and pageantry as for utter obliteration in the First World War. In this, la belle epoque, Ritz and Escoffier would reinvent magnificently the trappings of leisure, while women would attempt to reinvent the sexual hierarchy. This was the social and political backdrop in which Evelyn Lansdowne and Dorothea Mary Lee would find themselves..."345p. plates. bibliography.index Book‎

‎Doyle O Crain‎

‎1952 Diary of an American Seaman Posted to the USS Marsh During the Korean War‎

‎Korea: Korean War USS Marsh. Good. 1952. Hardcover. On offer is a fascinating first-hand account of a young American sailor in the Korean War. This slim notebook measures 6 inches by 3.5 inches and contains 136 pages. It is 10% complete. The cover binding and pages are all in good condition. The handwriting is quite legible. The author of this notebook is Doyle O. Crain. Born in Tulsa OK Crain was 18 when he entered the United States Navy. Crain passed away in 2009 at the age of 75. Casual research had not turned up any additional biographical information. Crain's notebook begins on June 13th 1952 and ends on August 6 1952. He was posted to USS Marsh DE 699 a Destroyer Escort in February 1951. Marsh had been in Korean waters when Crain begins his entries. When Crain's journal begins Marsh has been ordered to return to Okinawa for hunter-killer exercises returning to Korea on 21 June. Taking up aircraft carrier screen duties she operated with Bataan CVL-29 and HMS Ocean in the Yellow Sea. In July she again headed south this time to serve with the Formosa Patrol then on 22 August returned to the battle line. She patrolled off the west Korean coast initially but was moved to the east coast in late September to blockade. She participated periodically in the shelling of troop and transportation centers in the Songin and Wonsan areas. On 22 October she sailed again to the Korean coast where she conducted patrols until steaming for Yokosuka and the United States on 14 November. In October Marsh was involved in an action shelling shore batteries. In the engagement she called for assistance and the Royal Canadian Navy destroyer HMCS Iroquois came to her assistance. In rendering that assistance Iroquois was hit. USS Marsh did not offer assistance and instead steamed away. According to some reports RCN ships in Korea from that moment on rarely made requests for support; and those requests whenever possible excluded the ships of the USN. Thunder in the Morning Calm Brown 2011. Crain was rated as a Seaman SN. Some examples of his entries include: "Nice weather today. Plane guard detail for carrier "Sicily" 118 CVE. 6 more days to Okinawa" June 14; "Got contact this morning with another sub at 0600. Not too good of weather this morning. Pay day today!" June 15; "Nice cool day. We are with the British carrier Ocean. The same ones we were with in Korea. We are supposed to be in Sasebo the 10 th of July" June 22; "The sea is very rough and it is raining hard - the wind is also blowing hard. We are going to refuel and then go on to the Worthington patrol tonight. It won't be no picnic" June 28; "The sea is very rough today and the wind is blowing very hard. We are with three other DE's - the Walton 361 McCoy Reynolds 440 and the Currier 700…" July 20; "Nice Day. Refuels from the tanker this morning. Met the Walton 440 this afternoon and their Capt. Came over and had a talk with Capt. Venne of the Marsh" July 30. This short notebook offers a fine view of the daily life of a US navy sailor during the Korean War. For a naval historian if offers additional cross referencing for the location and roles of other warships serving in that theatre of combat. ; Manuscripts; 16mo 6" - 7" tall; 14 pages . ‎DR and MRS HG KRIBS H G‎

‎1920s ORIGINAL SCRAPBOOK OF EDUCATIONAL AND CHRISTIAN OUTREACH BY THE AMERICAN PRESBYTERIAN MISSION AS A PENNSYLVANIA DOCTOR OF BIOLOGY AND ZOOLOGY SPENDS 7 YEARS IN INDIA TEACHING‎

‎ALLAHABAD INDIA BOMBAY JAMUNA RIVER SANGAM. Good. 1920. On offer is a sensational original scrapbook compiled and owned by Dr. H.G. and Mrs. Kribs of Pennsylvania. The book details their journey to India and their social life and meetings with the upper strata of East Indian society and many many government leaders with the background of their educational missionary work. That said much of the content shows that they were attempting to bridge the cultural gap between societies as many of the invites reveal 'mixed race' parties and functions. The diary is packed - to the point of the covers bursting and off though present - with invitations letters to and from photos newspaper clippings and much much more dated through the 1920's. There are a few photos at the very back in later years. The Kribs were based in Allahabad and were very highly connected as evidenced by the invitations. Invites include: Rai Bahadur Jagmal. Raja The Vice-Chancellor of Allahabad University Members of the Indian Science Congress The Chancellor and Members of University of Bombay His Excellency The Governor and Lady Hailey The Senate House 8th December 1926 The Staff and Students of Oxford & Cambridge Hostel 1924 etc. Online references flesh out the details of the Kribs' trip and experience in India: 1 Narberth Presbyterian SPEAKER: Dr. H. G. Kribs University of Pennsylvania. SUBJECT: Some World Problems of Religion." This service will be under the auspices of the H. C. Gara Men's Bible Class. Dr. Kribs is a man of wide experience and will bring a worthwhile message. EVERY MAN is cordially invited to be present. 2 Dr. H. G. Kribs of the Department of Zoology of the University of Pennsylvania will speak on "Some Problems of Religion. He has had world experience as a teacher traveler and social worker only recently returned to this country after seven years residence at Allahabad India where he taught Biology in the Christian College. 3 Ewing Christian College ECC was established in 1902 as Allahabad Christian College by the American Presbyterian Mission ECC is one of the oldest colleges established in India. However this claim is doubtful because the British East India Company was long gone at the time of the college's founding as the British had taken over the control of India after the first war of Independence in 1857. At the beginning the college was named Vernacular school. Later its governance was shifted to the Presbyterian Church. In 1910 it was called Allahabad Christian College. The campus is located on the northern bank of Jamuna River near Sangam on the southern part of Allahabad City. Spread on a sprawling green campus of 42 acres 170000 m2 the college opened its Agriculture Economics Extension Department on the other side of the river which soon developed into Allahabad Agriculture Institute now a deemed university. The college took giant strides in the field of higher education with Dr. Dudgeon opening a first laboratory course in botany laying a very strong base for research in the college. In 1903 many undergraduate offerings were initiated. However in 1922 on the account of a new university act the school lost its college status. In 1935 it started offering classes in a coeducational setup. In 1950 after the permission of Allahabad University classes for degree students began and once again it acquired college status. More recently in 1995 it achieved its autonomous status as institution in India which could offer its own examinations under the affiliation with Allahabad University.; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall; KEYWORDS: JAMUNA RIVER SANGAM ALLAHABAD UNIVERSITY ALLAHABAD CHRISTIAN COLLEGE EWING CHRISTIAN COLLEGE SOCIAL STUDIES RACE RELATIONS CASTE SYSTEM DR. ‎Dr Charles Thomas Gnewuch‎

‎1953-1990 Travel Diary of a Wisconsin Chemistry Professor’s Two Incredible Outdoor Adventures At Ages 15 and 52‎

‎Milwaukee Wisconsin WI. Good with no dust jacket. Hardcover. On offer is an interesting journal with entries separated by nearly forty years. It includes a reference toanother of the unique historical and true legends of the west. The journal belonged to Dr. Charles Thomas Gnewuch 1938-2020. He was born to parents Charles and Dorothy Ahern Gnewuch and graduated from St. Mary Springs Academy in Fond du Lac WI. He earned a PhD in Chemistry at Georgetown University and became a university professor ending his career at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. His focus as a university educator and researcher was in the area of medicinal chemistry with an emphasis on anti-cancer agents. Outside of his professional work he was a gifted musician being heavily involved with the Green Lake Festival of Music. Gnewuch enjoyed a late-in-life marriage in 1999 to Julie Ann Lickteig. Julie cared for him as he lost partial use of his legs due to transverse myelitis. This journal is unique in that it contains details of an outdoors trip with his father Charles when he was 15 years old and a second trip in 1990 when he was 52. The diary also contains two photocopies of photographs taken at the “Vagabond Ranch” in Colorado – a wilderness ranch still in operation today. The first trip was taken in 1953 along with his father. Together they travelled to join a larger group of campers with whom they set off on a cross-country adventure to a ranch in Colorado. He keeps detailed notes of each day and the flavour of the trip shines through: “Got up at 7-15 and made bed. Ate breakfast. Packed extra socks . And sleeping bag in trailer and back of Chrysler. Started to Cheyenne at 10-30 or 10-40. . Finally camped near an amusement park not far from the rodeo grounds . Ate dinner on park bench. Before this we tried to go swimming in a lake nearby but the lake was closed to swimming Reason Water was so polluted and stagnant from lack of rain. . ” July 21 1953. He makes reference to both the Shepp and Bemis ranches in Idaho and the legendary history of Polly Benis. “Got up around 6: 00 . Had the trout for breakfast. . Pack up and were on our way at 9-45 A. M. We saw some more deserted cabins. . The homesteads were a product of the Depression. . The Bemis and Shep Ranch. Bemis was shot during a poker game and a Chinese slave girl nursed him back to health. Benis took her to the ranch near the river. They were married and they lived together until they died…” Aug 10 1953. “. We started on the last leg of our journey at 9-00 A. M. We went through some good-sized rapids. At one rapids Dad and & I got out of the boat and got pictures…” Aug 11 1953. Barely a page after the description of this trip as a youth Gnewuch begins a journal of a trip he took in 1990 from Fond du Lac WI to the southern states. At that time he was 52 years old and in the middle of a very successful career as a university professor and researcher. Unlike the first trip description this one does not bring him full-circle to his home but rather ends abruptly in Jackson MS. It is also a much shorter account. He begins on April 5th 1990 leaving Fond du Lac WI and driving to Cairo I. It’s a succinct entry with a descriptive comment about Cairo: “. Cairo is a poor town at the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. Down along the levi of the Ohio River” Apr 5 1990. In Memphis his love of music comes through in his comments: “.In evening went to Beale Street to listen to blues and jazz. Enjoyed listening to a jazz band at blank. All black musicians and a black female vocalist. Walked to the Peabody Hotel to listen to an old Negro pianist at the lounge. He played a boogie woogie number for me and he was very good with the blues…” Apr 6 1990. The record of this trip extends another few days before ending abruptly when he is in Vicksburg Mississippi. This is a fine example of a look at an early formative experience in a successful man’s life as he kept his childhood journal well into his adult life only to use it again to record another similar experience. The book is a travel journal and measures 6.5 inches by 4.0 inches. It contains 88 pages plus reference pages and is 50% complete. The cover is padded and it and the spine are in good condition. The pages are in good condition and the handwriting is legible. ; Manuscripts; 16mo 6" - 7" tall; 88 pages; Signed by Author . hardcover‎

‎DR HARRY H BAKER‎

‎1910 - 1911 ORIGINAL ARCHIVE OF TWO 2 MANUSCRIPT DIARIES DETAILING THE LIFE AND ILLNESS OF A BROOKLYN DOCTOR FROM DIAGNOSIS TO DEATH‎

‎BROOKLYN NEW YORK CHICAGO ILLINOIS. Good. 1910. On offer is a very interesting archive of two 2 handwritten diaries and 14 early photos handwritten by Dr. Harry H. Baker of Brooklyn New York and at one time Chicago Illinois. The diaries relate specifically to his life and practice but of particular note are entries detailing his own illness from diagnosis to death. In fact he writes right up until the last week of his life. Historians researchers and collectors of medical writings of a personal and intimate nature will find this a unique perspective within the two small leather bound diaries that the doctor kept in 1910 and 1911. He lived at 480 East 19th Street Brooklyn New York. He kept careful daily recordings of his activities. Beginning in June 1910 through December he begins detailed records of his visits to the doctor and he gets a diagnosis of Mitral Stenosis. He reports frequently afterwards on symptoms and medication. He keeps up a lively social schedule through the rest of the year. The 1911 diary continues with the details of his medical condition as well as social visits. He records driving his auto and taking a doctor who was afraid to drive on his calls. In fact he seems to love taking people for a ride in his auto no matter the weather no matter how bad he feels. His condition worsens in April of 1911 and he requires a nurse at home. Perhaps the same nurse who is represented in group of photos that came with these diaries He is bedridden and the diary ends May 7th. Research suggests he died only a few days later on May 12th. He sensed his oncoming death because at the end of April he makes out and signs a new will. Here are some snippets: 1910 "June 20th Began Digalon again. 5 qts. B's d. First since 4/9. 10 weeks. Legs swollen worst since came from Ohio. Did not go down at night as formerly." "July 7th Dig. 5 qts. Demonstration of Overland with Dr. F. When talking with Mr. Silver on curb felt faint. Sat on window ledge a moment. Worse. He took me in to Cowperthwaite's where I lay down on settee. Better. Walked to 62 Ave. Worse again. Sat and cold sweat on forehead. Pulse almost imperceptible. Lay down for almost 40-45 minutes. Better." "July 13th Mr. Silver agreed to make me a special agent for Overland on 10 percent commission and sell me a car at special reduced price and give me prospect to follow up. Watch 52 seconds slow." "July 30th Called on Mrs. Krause Bismarck Hotel Chicago. "Ed" Moved. "Isn't she a luscious piece of flesh" Fannie to Mrs. Clarke music teacher about Helen. Left 1934 Sedg. About 1 mo ago. H. W. at work for Field's on wagon. Mrs. Yorke and Mr. and Mrs. Opert's came." "August 6th At Dr. Cady's 11:30-12:30. Walked over Brooklyn Bridge. "September 26th Went to Bellevue Hosp. Poor report for Miss Brink Supt. Of training nurses. Also poor report of Mr. Wilson of Roosevelt Hosp. Exam of Cadillac Stearns and Jackson Autos." "October 2nd Slept late and well. Went in auto with Dr. and Mrs. F. to call on Dr. Barnes at Williamsburg Hosp. Still in bed over 4 weeks after operation for Apps. Chess. "March 21st About 12:30 P.M. had an attack of weak heart and poor circulation causing awful tingling and numbness in leg then foot and toes became immovable. Will gave me Puls. Cc1. In 2-3 hrs it got some better tho tingling when touched on inside of leg and foot. 2 days. Pain with this was excruciating. Auntie came over and helped Dr. and Mrs. F. Had a nurse Mrs. Evelyn at night." "April 5th Slept fairly well. Felt better during day than since taken sick this time tho very weak. Sharp pain about heart 4-5 times very severe. "May 5th Slept 5 ¼ hrs. at night. None during day. Sat up most all day. Very difficult to lie down. Miss Smith sick and did not come Thursday night. Miss Arnold stayed till 11 A.M. 5". F. over to see Will 9-11 P.M. Miss Cunningham at night……" Enhancing the narrative are related photographs showing Dr. Baker from childhood as a baby only 4 months and on into his adult years. There are 9 photos of him all have his name on the back and some even his address at the time and the date. Two are duplicates but the rest were taken during the various stages of his life. On the back of one it says "6239 Monroe Ave. Hyde Park Chicago Ill. 1st Practicing medicine." One photo states: "Nurse. Mrs. Annis. 1908 or 1909." The other photos show his father and mother: The Rev. and Mrs. Ephraim Baker. Two of the CVDs are of Rev. Ephraim Baker at different ages. Then the younger man's photo was made by J.W. Clark Mendota Illinois the older man was made by Soderberg Sutton Nebraska. His wife was Janet or Jeanette Whitney. There is a photo of her as an attractive young woman with her hair dressed with long curl on her shoulder. The photographer was J.W. Clark. The Cabinet photo shows her as an older woman and there is no photographer named. According to family research both people graduated from Oberlin College. They were the parents of Dr. H.H. Baker. The 1910 diary measures about 2 ½" x 4" and the 1911 diary measures about 2 ¾" x 5 ¼". Both the diaries and photos are in good shape. ; Manuscript; 32mo - over 4" - 5" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF HARRY H.
