‎Hampton England Britain: The Blitz Bombing England War Effort Farmer Woman. Good with no dust jacket. 1940. Hardcover. On offer is a superb first-hand account of ‘the Blitz’ - the bombing of southern England in the early days of World War Two combined with a journal of a young entrepreneurial woman engaged in the family farming business. This diary belonged to Marjorie Maud Lush 1917-2016 a 22 year old girl living on a farm in southern England specifically in Hampshire. She was born in Ringwood Hampshire to Louisa Maude Thorne and Albert Ernest Lush. She never married passing away at 98 years of age. In 1940 she was living with her parents on their family farm Badmington Farm near Fawley just outside of Southampton. She is recorded as working as an assistant to her father in a small herb business and many entries refer to that. She was certainly aware of what was going on in the war and her account provides a fabulous insight into the experience of the war from an English layperson: “News of the bombing of the Altmark by the men of HMS Cossack and the rescue of between 3 and 400 English merchantmen who had been prisoners on board since the battle of the River Plate. They had been captured by the Graf Spee” Feb 17. “Raid on Portsmouth dinner time hit a brewery and one or two small boats in the docks. Very heavy gunfire. Terrible smoke over P. Saw one man come down by parachute - landed in water off Calshot” Aug 12. Amidst all of her day-to-day activities are her entries about the rising tide of bombings as Hitler’s Luftwaffe sought to pummel England to her knees. “London had its first bad raid. Gunfire here nearly all night long” Sept 8. “Another raid on London. Gunfire here until the ‘wee wee hours’. Supposed to have been invaded yesterday. Church bells were rung and L. V. D. ’s were ready but nothing happened although the C. O. Told Mr. Soffe that we had been very hush hush on the subject” Sept 9. That ‘gunfire’ was the planes of the RAF engaging the waves of German bombers in what came to be known as the Battle of Britain. The Battle of Britain raged for several moths between July and October in 1940 and resulted in Germany’s first defeat in WWII. Earlier she had written: “The day Hitler said he was going to be in London. A tea party was arranged with places saved for Hitler and Mussolini but message received from H - “Regret not being able to attend; set out as arranged but blown back by a hurricane! ! . Raid over Southampton again…7 or 8 balloons were shot down…” Aug 15. The “hurricane’ reference being a nod to the RAF Hurricane fighter that made up the majority of RAF Fighter Command. As well as her detailed accounts of the war Marjorie wrote of her daily life including her work on her family’s farm and her acquaintance Madge Hooper who owned and operated The Stoke Lacy Herb Farm in Hereford. In 1940 Hooper had just begun this venture which was to grow into an internationally known business: “. Madge engaged to Mr. Hooper the male student at the Herb Farm” Aug 2. “G. M wanted 3 packets mixed herbs of course I only had 2 in stock. Sent off to The Herb Garden Stoke Lacy Herb Farm for 1 doz pkts Mixed Herbs 10 pts mixed and 2 pkts Lemon Thyme. Beagles caused great excitement among the cows” Feb 24. The diary covers the year of 1940 and Marjorie has tipped in two additional pages containing diary entries for January 7-21 1941 in which she writes details of a “bad raid on Pompey…” likely referring to the German bombing that killed dozens near the Bank of England. Marjorie has also tipped and glued in an extensive number of newspaper clippings such as one with King George and his wife Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother surveying damage to Buckingham Palace after one air raid. There are 2 ration books and 2 sketched-out family trees. This is not just a diary but a scrapbook too. For a historian this is a superb first-hand account of those grim and harrowing days in the early years of WWII weaved in alongside the daily diary of a young entrepreneurial British woman. Measuring 12.25x 7.75 inches this hardbound book contains 107 numbered pages. It is approximately 75% complete. The cover and pages are in good condition the binding is loosening. Legible. On offer is a sensational original scrapbook and group of ephemera related to both the 1901 Pan-American minor focus and 1904 Louisiana Purchase major focus Expositions of the publicity superintendent and man responsible for the public faces of the Fairs being a scrapbook of his incoming correspondence including several typed and signed letters from William Buchanan the Director General of Pan-American Exposition handwritten notes news and magazine clippings photos there is a wonderful F.P. Stevens aerial photo of 1904 fairgrounds looking east documents and other ephemera tucked and tipped in regarding the Fairs making for an original unique behind the scenes look. Compiled and created by Mark Bennitt sometimes Bennett a highly successful writer who became involved with both the 1901 Pan-American and 1904 Louisiana Purchase Expositions as the Publicity Superintendent. While the book goes a very long way in detailing the Fairs it is obviously Mr. Bennitt's personal scrapbook and it is apparent from the outset that Mr. Bennitt was a brilliant hire for those responsible for the Fairs' success as witnessed by the clippings related to his hiring and personal background as befits a man of success and proud of his ongoing accomplishments but that stated Mark was a master of his craft and the book tells the story of the machinations to making the Fairs and the man who made them publicity successes. Of particular interest will be that the book provides a mirror view of the Fairs as seen by the outside public while for the historian also providing a look at the Fairs from the inside. We note: Near the back are some dozen pages of later writings of Bennitt's sojourn up the West coast in 1906. He is also a meticulous financial record keeper with 12 months of his income and expenditures recorded in the back of the diary. Since Stiles was such a busy man with hands in so many pots his diary provides great insight into the work of an elected official farmer surveyor and family man. A real treat. Excerpts give the flavour of this impressive diary: “No snow on the ground very nice wagoning and a beautiful day. I am in Belfast today. The Dec turn of the C. C. Court closed yesterday and the Dec. Adj. Turn begins today. The new member of the board is with us - Mr. C. D. Wilson. A new organization is made up today. I was elected as Chairman of the board for the ensuing year. Accepted an invitation to a turkey dinner with Mr. O. G. White the retiring Co. Treasurer. Mr. Payson went also. Mr Payson Mr. Tileston Waldin Clerk of Courts and myself bought a couple trimmed rocking chairs for Mr. Thompson the retiring C. C. ” Jan 1 1889. “We met this A. M. Have had Osborn’s man up to see about taking up the carpet on the Court room and cleaning and replacing it but decided not to do it at present. Visited the jail P. M. Decided to go to Augusta and consult with the C. C. ’s of Kennebec Co. In regard to tramps etc. Wrote letter to them & also wrote invitations to the boards of several other counties to meet us there” Feb 13. “Went to Brooks this A. M. This diary would appeal to anyone interested in the inner workings of a local county commission a legacy farming family and New England in the 19th century. This diary is also interesting to those who focus on male diarists of the 19th century as the nature of Stiles’ clean cursive and his commitment to long descriptive entries is quite unique. BIO NOTES: Mark S. Stiles Jr. Was born in the town of Jackson Maine to parents Lydia Kingsbury and Hon. Mark S. Stiles. Mark Jr. Followed in his father’s footsteps with the elder Stiles serving as a well-loved county commissioner and a selectman of Jackson. When Stiles Sr. Died in 1889 he was the oldest living person in Jackson. Stiles Jr. Married Elizabeth Jane Lizzie Hanson in 1885. Together they lived near Brooks Maine. They had a daughter Lula and a son Robert. Stiles Jr. Worked in land surveying and also ran a farm. He was elected to the Waldo County Commission becoming Chairman in 1889. This diary measures 6.0 inches by 3.5 inches and contains 365 pages plus Memoranda and Bookkeeping pages. It is 95% complete only missing about three entries. The cover spine and binding are all in good condition though the pages are loosening they are intact. ‎1961 ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN HAND ILLUSTRATED SCRAPBOOK AND TRAVEL JOURNAL OF ONE GERMAN MAN'S TRIP HALFWAY AROUND THE WORLD‎

‎ASEA ABOARD THE HIPPER. Very Good. 1961. On offer is the super original manuscript journal and travel diary of a young German sailor in training aboard school frigate 'Hipper' with an escort being the school frigate Spee the namesakes of both ships were scuttled during World War II - the Spee in 1939 the Hipper in 1945. Beginning January 5th until February 8th they are in "cadet training" in the harbor at Kiel Germany near the north coast east of Denmark. They do go to sea on training maneuvers but only for a few hours at a time. Each of the cadets rotates through various duties and watches. "Clean Ship" is mentioned a lot night watch on deck and the usual naval watches. There is mention of provisioning the ship and there are photos of beer being loaded. On Thursday February 9 1961 they get ready to leave the harbor - lots of relatives come to see them off. The writer of the journal's father brother and sister come - he mentions that his mother is in hospital. When they depart at 10 am there is a large colorful mass of people on the pier. From this point on he notes latitude and longitude degrees and the time 1200 with every entry. He mentions passing between Dover and Calais February 11 in the English Channel and Casablanca February 17 the Canary Islands on February 18. On February 21st he talks about crossing the equator and the ceremonies that take place There's a type-written memorandum dated February 23 1961 from the ship's doctor with cautions and tips on how to handle being in the tropics. On Thursday February 23 they are in Porto al Pedro then Porto Grande then Cabo Verde - where he writes about asking if Cabo Verde is a part of Portugal or a Portuguese colony. He makes a comment about the teacher saying something that he didn't understand. The teacher says it doesn't matter it's better that way. Then in English: "We cannot say and discuss all things we are thinking about because the walls have got ears." On Wednesday March 1 he makes a comment about the fleas they brought on board in Porto Grande - lots of the crew have bites. He learns that the next day the Admiral's flag is to be raised - Admiral Triton is to come aboard to see the preparations for the christening. There's a typewritten sheet with orders for Thursday March 2nd 1961 - with times and duties outlined. The ceremonial inspection etc. was to begin at 16:30. There's also an unused $10 stamp from Cabo Verde it's nested in that page. Penedos de Sao Pedro e Sao Paulo - an archipelago of cliffs that stretch out into the sea of the coast of Brazil. On Friday March 3 the "Equator Crossing Christening" by His Majesty Neptune is to take place at 9 am. They arrived in Rio de Janeiro on March 10. The following days until March 15 when they departed are descriptions of his impressions of Rio and the girls he met. A typewritten memo about shopping in Buenos Aires cautioning against shopping without knowing the shops and recommending that the crew accept the advice and help of resident Germans who would be able to suggest suitable gifts for loved ones back home. The memo provides names and addresses of shops restaurants and public transportation methods. There's a declaration signed by Mr. Behrendt on March 21 acknowledging that he owes the government .96 DM for losing 3 teaspoons. They arrive in Buenos Aires on Friday March 24. He's collected "souvenirs" - a menu with handwritten prices and daily specials cigar wrappers a city map Argentinian stamps a 10-peso note a candy or chewing gum wrapper and a post-card picture of the Admiral Graf Spee battle ship burning presumably in 1939 a price list from a liquor store a cardboard coaster some tickets addresses of women and a newspaper clipping a receipt and a type-written news report that says "for authorized use only". They depart from Buenos Aires on Sunday April 2nd Easter Sunday in the afternoon. There's a loose leaf inserted that one one side has the "Serenity" prayer in German and on the other side from a resolution of the German Catholic Youth Movement of June 19 1960 discussing the political correctness of the various names by which the former East German Republic which is on their list of no-no's was referred to and makes two recommendations for what would be acceptable and appropriate. By the entry of Saturday April 15 there's pamphlet about the Amazon region in German. Between pages 72 and 73 there's a type-written sheet that appears to be a variety-show program by the ship's crew. On Tuesday April 18 they are Belem do Para on the Amazon Estuary. There is a receipt from a hotel restaurant. They stop in Trinidad Port of Spain Porto Azul. La Guaira Venezuela. The last entry in the book is Sunday May 7th. There are later entries on other sheets of paper and it looks like Markus Behrendt was attempting to write about his experiences and publish or self-publish them.
