1840 RIVETING ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT SURVIVOR'S ACCOUNT OF THE SINKING BY FIRE AND EVENTUAL RESCUE OF AN AMERICAN PACKET SHIP FILLED WITH COMBUSTIBLES AND PASSENGERS
25 MILES SOUTH OF NANTUCKET SHOALS. Good. 1840. On offer is a sensational original 38 page manuscript account dated Boston 1840 of the ill-fated voyage of the packet ship 'Poland' which caught fire on May 16 en route from New York to Le Havre in France her passengers being rescued two days later by Captain J.B. Ingersoll with the Clifton. The narrator and survivor was Mr. J.H. Buckingham a descendent of Thomas Tinker one of the Pilgrim Fathers on the Mayflower his father being Hon. Joseph Tinker Buckingham 1771-1861 politician journalist and founder of the Boston Courier in 1824. J.H. Buckingham is also associated with the Boston Courier for many years serving his father's enterprise as editor publisher and reporter. Before this voyage he had just resigned as publisher of the Boston Courier in 1939 but would return as a reporter shortly thereafter. In July 1847 he made a stage-coach trip to Chicago and throughout Illinois as a delegate to the River and Harbor Convention and as a reporter for his father's paper accompanying none other than later President Abraham Lincoln. The actual writer appears to be Elizabeth Elise Russell Tyson daughter of George Tyson a railroad official and former merchant in the China trade and Sarah Anthony Tyson. She lived with her family at 314 Dartmouth Street in Boston and in 1915 married attorney and fox hunting aficionado George D. Vaughan. The detailed account of Poland's final voyage interrupted and ended by a lightning induced fire about 25 miles south of Nantucket Shoals leaves little to the imagination as Buckingham describes all: the beginning of the journey the devastating storm and subsequent fire to the cotton and flour in the cargo hold measures taken by crew and passengers for survival the struggles and the collaborative efforts the slowly passing and uncertain hours are recounted in detail until the final rescue. Luckily for historians and researchers the witness to these events was one of the few who remained on the vessel after most were placed on longboats. Not knowing if he would survive at all his observations are recalled in a calm stoic manner his recollections vivid and clear. We quote from the Sydney Gazette: "No language" says the writer of narrative. "can tell of the sufferings of that night which was far more dreadful than the previous night." After a variety of the most agonizing apprehensions and sufferings during which the mothers who had been compelled to hold their youngest children in their arms were well nigh exhausted the ship was put before the wind in the hope of falling in with some sail and as the vessel leaked the men were put to the pump and the water first pumped up was hot. At two o'clock on the afternoon of Monday a sail was discovered from the mast-head. It proved to be the Clifton Captain J. B. Ingersoll bound from Liverpool to New York with two hundred and fifty steerage passengers. The transfer of the crew and passengers of the Poland to the Clifton was effected. At the time the last boat's load left the former her decks had become too hot to stand upon and as she rolled in the sea the water ran from her reeking sides as from hot iron. On board the Clifton every attention was paid to these who had escaped such extreme danger and in due time they were landed safely in New York." Overall G. HISTORICAL NOTES: On 11 May 1840 she left New York with a total of 63 persons on board 24 being cabin passengers. On the 16th she was struck by lightning a disastrous event which resulted in a fire being sparked onboard creating a desperate situation which just in time ended in a rescue. On the 18th the Boston built 'Clifton' commanded by Captain J. B. Ingersoll bound from Liverpool to New York with two hundred and fifty steerage passengers came upon the Poland with her passengers sequestered to the vessel's bow. She took all persons onboard along with any salvageable provisions until the Captain deemed it unsafe to continue. At the time of the last load being removed Poland's decks had become too hot to stand upon. The deeply grateful group watched the Poland burned into the sea knowing that they had so narrowly escaped the same end. The loss of property to the Poland was estimated at $150000. 1888 - 1929 FASCINATING ORIGINAL GROUP OF 15 MANUSCRIPT DIARIES HANDWRITTEN BY THE WIFE OF AN EDINBURGH MINISTER
Scotland. Good. 1888. On offer are 15 detailed diaries of a Scottish minister's wife at the turn of the 19th century and extending into the first quarter of the 20th century 1888 through 1929. Comprising about 200 pages each these leather-bound volumes are in very good condition. They measure about 5 inches by 3/34 inches. Most of the annual diary entries are 99% complete. Several are 33-50%. There are additional notes in the Memoranda sections. The entries are brief and her handwriting is very tight but fairly legible. The 1923 volume contains an insurance policy attached to the inside rear cover. It was issued by the Ocean Accident & Guarantee Company Limited. Ocean was incorporated in 1876 and through mergers continued in business until 2005 when it was wound up. The 1929 volume was printed by Letts & Co the firm that invented the world's first commercial diary more than 200 years ago. Under a red-sealed ribbon it contains 2 unique sales offerings. One is an accident insurance policy which notes it is not necessary for the . policy or the diary to be on the person at the time of accident. The 2nd insert offers an anonymous mailing forwarding & redirect service. The firm British Monomark had been established only 4 years previously and remains in business today as one of the UK's largest mail forwarding and virtual business service providers. The other interesting feature of this 1929 volume is a folding memo tablet attached to the rear cover. It can be used as a mini whiteboard as its polished surface can be erased with a damp cloth. The volumes for 1924 1925 1927 and 1928 are Edinburgh Diaries manufactured by George Waterston & Sons. They contain a very extensive information section including the usual lists such as Postal rates MP's and UK and Scottish holidays etc. Additionally there are some unique sections such as an extensive Gardening Kalendar Game Laws Terms Tide Tables for Principal Scottish Ports and a detailed listing of the Members of the Royal Family. The author of the diaries is unknown. From context we can gather that her husband 'A' is a minister possibly Church of England. There are a number of references to locations that lead one to believe they live in Edinburgh. Her entries recount personal events and happenings within her community: "Went into town in the afternoon and accomplished all my errands which were numerous. Called on Mrs. Mrs also on Miss Gibson" April 27 1888. "Stopped at Britismans a cod fishing station. 31 millions caught this year . "July 4 1888. "Lunched with D McGregor and Lady Jane Dundas and Lady Caroline Charteris. Aunt Helen had baptism . " Mar 5 1889. "Left Edinburgh at 10:30 for Abington where the 4-in-hand coach awaited us. The party consists of Mr & Mrs Thomas Leadbetter Miss Thomas Ball P & E and us. Lunched at Leadhills down Menock Pass past Canonbridge to Thornhill. Called at the Rogersons" May3 1889. She notes with a great deal of tenderness: ". Tonight at ten minutes past eleven our little girl came to us - our first born. How strange it all seems! God be praised" Aug 7 1889. "Percy left this morning. Mary at Creigs. A left this morning for Balmoral with P who was going across to Fife ." Sept 21 1889. "Meeting about various messages in the morning Shopping with E in the afternoon. Made calls in connection with the projected mission. Harry Parker came in at night. Called on Mrs. Williamson" June 8 1891. "At Graham Park Mission all day decorating the hall." Dec 23 1892. Many entries note shopping excursions and lunches with friends. She helps out with church events and bazaars. She has a very busy social life as would befit someone who is married to a minister with some standing in his community. The diaries contain a section for noting who visited the date of their visit and when the visit was reciprocated. There are many entries over the time period. Her cash accounts are sporadic but do note costs of various items plus her donations to various causes. Twenty five years on her life is still focused around family her very busy social life and church activities. "A went to 's funeral and took the service. I had no black or dark clothes so I sent flowers. I called upon Mrs . Fresh but cold. ." Aug 13 1924; "Went hunting for carpets for Joppa Home in the morning."Apr 14 1927. Joppa Home was a home for unmarried mothers and their babies. This is a superb resource for a social historian looking at the role of women in a society with a highly defined structure. This would be especially the case for Victorian Scotland. The author is a very literate educated woman who diligently records her daily life over a period of many years. On offer is a very interesting original manuscript copy and transcription created in the late 1890s of the "Journal of Elizabeth Leonard" wife of Captain Ezra Leonard and the "Journal of a Voyage from Boston to Valparaiso Chili in the Ship Prospero of Boston Capt. Oliver Lane Jr." The 9 x 14 inch book was handwritten by Elizabeth Leonard who apparently wanted to preserve her family's maritime history and thusly she copied a journal that she had kept of a voyage in 1855 and also a journal of a voyage kept by Captain Oliver Lane from Boston to Chile in 1854. She also writes of family history and genealogy in this record book. The Leonard's as well as Capt Lane lived in Anniasqum Massachusetts. In this journal Elizabeth starts with her preparation for the voyage aboard the brig "John M. Clayton" to San Juan Cuba. Ezra Leonard was the master of the brig and his wife Elizabeth was the only passenger aboard. The round trip voyage starts from Boston on the 2nd of February 1855. Elizabeth gives a very detailed; places people observations and her thoughts all recorded. She also writes about her family and friends and her home life and Annisquam and Chelsea. For example she also discusses a robbery that took place just before her voyage. Some local people had broken into Captain Lane's house in Annisquam and stole $300.00 and some personal items including a watch that has value. This section of the journal is 54 pages long and she includes about six pages of family history. The "Journal of a voyage from Boston to Valparaiso Chili in Ship Prospero of Boston Capt. Oliver lane Jr" is ten pages long. Captain Oliver Griffin Lane was a renowned sea captain of his time. He made many merchant voyages to Liverpool England the Caribbean Islands San Francisco and to the East to China and India. He sailed three ships and built his homestead in Annisquam Gloucester Mass. on Leonard St. where he had a store which sold the overage of his ships' inventories. This journal kept by Captain Lane is a classic log book providing the numerous details ships record since time immemorial: the ship's position winds weather observations etc. The journal starts on June 18th 1854 and ends on August 18th 1854. On offer is an original manuscript diary handwritten by future author historian and noted scholar of the eastern seaboard and American coastal waters Elizabeth Francenia McKoy. One of a prominent historical family she was the niece of noted portrait painter of Captain Kidd Henry Bacon. Of particular interest to historians and biographers of the author and the era this diary details her time in 1906-1907 while she's attending Converse College in Spartanburg South Carolina and in many ways is a unique relic of this school in the new century. Dated November 13th 1906 through June 16th 1907 the diary has 122 handwritten pages and is also full of ephemera; letters photos invitations etc. adding great depth to her Converse College experiences. MANCHESTER-BY-THE-SEA ANDOVER MASSACHUSETTS MA. Very Good. 1923. On offer is the 1923 handwritten diary of Elizabeth E. Saunders beginning in 1923 and going all the way to 1941. She writes of her life spent in Manchester-by-the-Sea Massachusetts as well as Andover and Arden as well as her friendships that last many years. The beach and nature figure prominently throughout as do fireside discussions about books she is reading birds she has spotted friends she has seen and enjoyed and much more. It is a diary of a bygone era and should be in a museum in Manchester-by-the-Sea. It is above all else beautifully written: October 8 9 10 1923. Days of unbroken sunshine. On the beach - in the woods - under the pines - by the fire. Each meal a movable feast. Called on Miss Anna Proctor in her darling house.Walked through the woods to the station. Ravine of unsurpassed brilliance. Met at the station Miss Mabel Carter of Andover who comes for a visit. In the afternoon I walk with Miss Carter around the shore via Smiths Point. Home at dusk; fire and supper. Long evening by fire-light only. Fuel enhanced by dry leaves. Mabel Carter eloquent on her Order of Silence a persuasive voice speaking out of the shadows around the glowing embers. She magnified and illuminated all the attributes of God with the tem infinite; Never love wisdom and power alone but always infinite-love infinite-wisdom infinite-power. The diary takes on a unique form after a few pages. On the right hand side of the book there are entries going chronologically from 1923 usually a few a year. On the left hand side of the book are long entries from the year 1941 beautiful written as well and presenting a very interesting juxtaposition between the two pages written many years apart. The 1941 entry is an account of a number of weeks at the beginning of autumn going on for many pages only on the left hand side. It stops for a few pages and then continues again. This can be confusing but Saunders writes on the bottom of each page where to go next to get the continuing 1941 entry. After the 1941 entry ends there is one for 1942 this time discussing the carefree summer months and the perfect Arden days. As the entries from the early years progress Elizabeth Saunders begins to include quotations essays passages and more taken from other sources. These include The Lost Continent of Mu by Colonel James Churchward; a passage from An Undiscovered Island Depicted in Shakespeares Tempest; Sacrament of Fire by John Oxenham; Islands of Light by Glenn Clark; and many other passages listed from many sources. Saunders always writes her personal feelings on these passages in very intelligent and interesting ways. She is obviously a very intelligent and learned woman. She is also a bird lover and includes lists of bird sightings for many years in the 1930s. Book lists are included as well beginning in 1923 and going all the way to 1941. Saunders writes often of her summer daily walks to Manchester-on-the-Seas Singing Beach of bonfires and holiday beach picnics with friends and family of the solitude of the beach in winter of bird sightings and books read. Her entries are an absolute joy to read and one that presents a complex and fascinating portrait of a woman over almost 20 years of her life living in the same place. This book is lovely and incredibly unique. Its cover has 1/2 leather binding and is still in very good condition. There is almost no wear and tear at all. The book was obviously very important to Ms. Saunders as it is still in excellent shape even after decades of use. Overall it is clean and almost immaculate. Pages and binding are in exceptionally great condition. The handwriting is clean and crisp throughout in blue and black ink. This book is really a treasure. 1951 Detailed Travel Diary of a Halifax Womans Train Tour Across Canada and Into the Western United States
Regina Seattle Vancouver. Good with no dust jacket. 1951. Softcover. On offer is a wonderfully detailed description of a classic train trip across Canada in the middle of the 20th century often reading as a love letter to Canada as it was shortly after the second world war as the baby boom was in full swing. The journal belonged to Elizabeth Helen Mahon 1926-2020. Mahon was born and raised in Halifax Nova Scotia graduating from Dalhousie University with a B. Sc in 1948. She worked in public health and as a registered lab technician. She married Ronald Curtis Lewis who passed away in 1964 and in 1993 she married Ernest Cavanaugh who passed away in 1994. Elizabeth had three children. After leaving Halifax Elizabeth lived in Amherst Dartmouth Toronto Brantford and finally settled in Cornwall Ontario. Elizabeth was devoted to the United Church and an active member of the UCW. She was also a long-term member of the Canadian Federation of University Women CFUW. In 1951 Elizabeth was 25 apparently dating her would-be husband who she calls Curtis and working in public health. She embarked on what is often seen as the iconic Canadian experience travelling across the vast expanse of Canada by train. On this trip she was accompanied by her aunt. She travelled west to British Columbia and then south to the United States stopping in Seattle before heading back east through Montana. Some of the many places Elizabeth stops tours and discusses at length in her diary include Montreal Winnipeg Regina Edmonton Banff and Lake Louise Vancouver Victoria Seattle Yellowstone Montana. She does indicate that she travels to Chicago on her way back to Halifax but her record cuts off after the Montana leg of her journey. Helens descriptions are well written and offer an excellent perspective of Canada as it was as well as some nice insight into western USA. Mahon often stopped in cities where she had friends or family and described local tours or excursions she took which adds a richness of detail to her journey. The following examples will illustrate not only the images and impressions of what she wanted to capture but also her descriptive writing. Note that these are just excerpts. Her entries are very long and chatty. : Soon after leaving Newcastle came to Bathurst and to the Bay Chaleur and saw the Gaspé Peninsula very clearly. High hills looking quite purple with green fields just like squares at the foot and little white dots where there were villages. Some places looked like sheer rock June 10. .Returned over the Henri Mercier Bridge in heavy traffic and came through west part of Montreal. Many of the Indians from the Reserve work on bridges because they are surefooted at high altitudes. Many work on bridges in New York and Montreal. Return to their little shacks on weekends in big cars

June 27. .The bus brought us direct to Banff Springs Hotel. We really felt ritzy in our room which is huge. If this is what the cheapest ones are we wonder what the more expensive ones are like
then we went to the Town to get mail at the Cascade and take the chair lift up Mount Norquay. This chair life is really wonderful the way you just float to the top of the mountain. The view was superb. We looked down on the Town of Banff the Banff Springs Hotel and right down the Bow Valley the way it flows toward Calgary. Mt Rundle is really a beautiful mountain and no picture I have seen does it justice

July 7. Also included with this diary are 20 black and white photographs. The pictures are of individuals and small groups who obviously were important in her life. One has the annotation Anna. Anna was with Elizabeth on this trip. For a social historian this diary offers a fine overview of what Canada looked like through the eyes of a a young woman on her first trip across this vast country. For a gender studies program it points to the changing roles of women in Canadian society prompted by the enormous changes in society as a result of WWII. This small travel journal measures 6.5x4.0 inches and contains 108 pages. It is about 90% complete. The covers and binding are in good condition as are the pages. 1884 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A PENNSYLVANIA WOMAN WHO IS FALLING IN LOVE WITH DENVER
PITTSBURG PENNSYLVANIA DENVER COLORADO. Fair. 1884. On offer is an original charmingly intimate manuscript diary dated 1884 handwritten by Ella C. King from Pittsburg Pennsylvania but as the diary opens up on July 28th 1884 we find Ella in Denver Colorado. While one would classify this as a travel diary in many ways it is more of an homage to the 'Mile-High City' as Ella is in love with the Rocky Mountains and on numerous occasions she mentions how she feels as though she might never visit this beautiful place again and becomes rather depressed at the thought. In fact at one point she is talking about how she is so in love with the mountains and says before she dies she will see them up close and follows that passage with
."If I only had one of the children and a horse of my own I would be so happy." In all she spends a little over 2 months in Denver. However while the 170 page narrative begins in the 5 ½" x 7 ½" notebook style journal a few days after her arrival later on the reader will realize this diary is very interesting on yet another level this being a sociological study: Ella is without her husband and children as she talks about them being back in Pittsburg. Why Intriguing clues may make for an interesting research project into her motives. Here is an example in the last entry: "December 31st The last day of the old year and I am all alone and in going over the past there is one little part I would clearly love to undo but as that is impossible it will be something for me to regret
.Good bye old year! I wonder where one year hence will find me." After her extended stay in Colorado in the fall she travels back home to Pittsburg. There she's a very busy socialite going to the opera hospital fairs democratic conventions taking her children to dancing school and other social engagements. Historians and researchers of the era in Women's Studies will have an interesting time with Ms. King. The journal was kept in a beautiful marble covered journal which is now falling apart and needs some archival repair. Both the front and back covers have fallen off but are accounted for. But the inside pages are securely attached to the binding and it rather large for its size as diaries are concerned. Here are some snippets: 1884 "July 28th Still very warm but breezy. I did little or nothing till morning. Indeed this is a very lazy life. In the afternoon I went to call on Mrs. Cinnamond an aunt of Alex Morris. She is a widow and keeps boarders. In the evening Harry took us the loveliest drive and we saw the prettiest part of Denver. Beautiful residences and the sweetest cottages covered with vines. From Capital Hill we had a magnificent view of the mountains. They looked so grand and majestic with the snow on them and the sunlight too. Looked as though they were almost at our feet when they are more tan fifty miles away." "August 1st I can write nothing but beautiful weather all the time. Jennie is something better though very sick yet. Harry and I have been with her almost all day. The Dr. has prescribed pretty severe treatment and if carried out I know will prove very beneficial. The fever is broken and she feels better though she would rest tonight." "August 26th Jennie has been more or less amused today watching young Stanchfield who is to be married this evening. I baked and was busy all morning. In the evening me and Mrs. Butler came and took me a lovely drive all over Denver. It looked so pretty with the electric lights all burning. We had the benefit of a sand blow coming up the hill. Mr. and Mrs. Yankee here in the evening." "August 7th Jennie's birthday! I had just finished cleaning up the room when who should arrive but the Dr. He was perfectly furious at finding her in bed but she feels so weak and easily tired. She don't like to make an effort to get up. How ever she will have to rouse herself from this time but
.Harry is putting up a tent for her to stay in during the day. Mrs. Kent here this afternoon killing herself over the Kennedy's having nothing to eat at the meeting." "September 1st What a lovely day this will be at home. The children all getting ready for school with the first stroke of the bell they will be off. I am so glad they have all had such a nice summer. The prettiest thing I saw was the representation of a ranch at Palmer Lake close to the foothills and the scenery was very natural and pretty. WACO TEXAS TX. Good. 1922. On offer is a super piece of early 20th century Texas Americana being a 1920s handwritten diary of a high school girl from Waco Texas. Ellen Barnett within the 86 pages of handwriting provides an amazing account of what life was like during the 1920's while living and attending high school in Waco. Of particular interest to Texas collectors and historians in this panorama of 1922 through 1930 will be the detailed entries on two important facets of Texas life at the time: football and the Ku Klux Klan. Although she does not write daily entries she writes quite a lot and she has a tremendous personality in many ways and the fact that her high school football team ends up making history as state champions in 1922 is a great thread throughout this journal. Her team the "old" Waco High Tigers were known for their famous coach Paul Tyson began his career in Waco in 1913. He was one of the best known and one of the most successful high school coaches in America. His teams at Waco played in seven state championship games including six consecutive 1922-27. Waco was state champions in 1922 1925 1926 and 1927 and runner up 1923 1924 and 1939. In 1927 Waco had one of the most dominant seasons in Texas high school football history. Ellen is very passionate about the football team and the games they play. She writes with great detail about many of the games has several pieces of ephemera inside representing her team and gets fired up on numerous occasions concerning specific games; almost to the point of tears. Ellen also tells of the Cotton Palace one of the most popular fairs in the South. June 3rd 1923 Ellen details the KKK parade through town and the description is riveting. Research informs us that in 1923 more then 2000 Klansmen paraded through the city and the organization boycotted businesses of people unsympathetic with its agenda. Many of the Waco's business and political leaders and Ellen seemed to implicitly support the Klan during this period and one member claimed that the Klan "controlled every office in the city of Waco" during the 1920's. Here are some snippets: 1922 "October 12th Last night or rather this morning at 5 a.m. the "hull" neighborhood with the exception of Mrs. Ivey and us were awakened by Mrs. Gentry's unearthly screams. "Help Help Come quick! Mr. Crow!!" Then she jumped in the car and went off. Everyone in our vicinity has been trying to find out what it was about. Mrs. Chapoton said that Mrs. Gentry went out to her car to go down and meet Mr. Gentry and there was a man sitting or rather sleeping in it. Then was when she screamed bloody murder. People a block off heard her. The man was a man who had been going to see her sister and he finally quieted her up no creo" "October 14th I didn't do much of anything today or rather this morning. But this afternoon mother and I went to town. I never saw so many old men loafing in front of Goldstein's
." "October 21st I wrote to Cardelia this morning and told her everything that popped into my head. I have to go to the post office this afternoon. Isn't it awful The Cotton Palace opens today with a parade at 10:30 a.m. and one at 7:00 p.m. It's the one I want to see. Governor Neff is to head the parade and 1500 Baylor students are to follow giving college yells and songs. I have no desire to go to the Cotton Palace except the night of the Queen's Ball and oh I want so much so much to see that for it must be beautiful and I know the one last year was for I saw that." "October 26th and 27th We are going to cook at the Cotton Palace tomorrow. "Aint we got fun"

When we finished cooking we went to see the Art exhibit and all exhibits in the main building. Dennis had the best looking bed room suite out there I ever laid my eyes on it was perfectly beautiful. Then we went to the automobile exhibit and---oh to be rich! There were some of the best looking cars out there; Hudson's Cadillac's Packard's Nashe's and every other kind of 1923 models. Then in this building there were four real Hawaiians who played on guitar
Then we went down on the "War Path". They had a lot of stuff down there and Garrett wanted me to go in "Home Brew" It's a thing where you go in a room and they turn it around and you get sick so I didn't go. Some more side shows were "Coney Island" a place where you saw glass blowers and men eat fire "Noah's Ark" "Feeding the Chickens" "The Country Store" "The Old Mill" "The Wall of Death". Then there were fortune tellers galore and then they had Ferris wheels merry go rounds the whip and everything else imaginable
" "October 31st Halloween! And of all the pranks played they were played. The "merrymakers" stole cars held up street cars let the air out of automobile tires stole flowers broke windows broke the speed limit by going down Austin Ave real fast with several tubes tied on behind creating quite a noise. They also pulled the trolley's off the street cars. This lasted until about 12 p.m." "November 23rd WACO HI HAS NOT BEEN BEATEN YET!!!!! They have not been beaten in a game however they have been scored on. It made me so angry----when we got scored on. We just barely beat Milford 12 to 7. Isn't it awful We play Palestine at Corsicana tomorrow. I hope hope hope we win. But I'm sure we will
." "December 9th Waco won the game! And I'm so happy happy happy. 30 to 0. Yesterday a bunch of us were going out to the Cotton Palace to see the game. School closed at 1 p.m. so we started and had walked about 5 blocks when imagine Barry picked us up and took us on out there. The bleachers and the grand stand were pushed in a little while. Then an areoplane from Temple flew over and dropped a big roll of canvas. On it was this a message to the wild cats "Fight em Wildcats." Two Temple boys carried it all over the field and let everyone see it. Then the game started both sides fought hard when suddenly Boody Johnston made a touch down. The 12000 fans simply went wild! Oh how the Tigers did fight!! The Wildcats fought just as hard but the Tigers fought them. Then they brought the most wonderful thing I ever hope to see!! It was some flowers in the shape of a football
" 1923 "January 3rd I never did write about that wonderful K.K.K. parade I saw the other night. There was the awfulest jam downtown on Austin Street. About 50000 I think. There was supposed to be 10000 Klansmen take part in the parade but something happened to the train that was to bring them here so only 2500 took part. There were no locals in the parade. Then it took them 28 minutes to pass. They were in full regalia and masked. I'm for the Klu Klux!!!! I am. They are strong too. They looked wonderful on horseback with the great beautiful fiery cross leading them. Then in the parade they had the original 1866 in cars. They had grey hair and grey beards and it gave me such a thrill to think that maybe one of these had helped save our forefathers after that awful civil war. Everyone cheered them. They deserved to be cheered." Right after this passage on a different date and in pencil she writes: "I'm not for em now though. April 20th 1924." On a trip to San Antonio in August of 1923. She writes about supper at a place called the "Original" talks about San Pedro Park Brekenridge and the Japanese Gardens White Horse Tavern Empire Theatre and more. 1924 "November 22nd Well Waco High has played and won many games since I've written in here. The next game we played was with Corsicana with Corsicana. I did not get to go but we won 43 to 0. I was delighted of course. Then we played Waxahachie here on the Cotton Palace gridiron. I heard the game at Mr. McCurdy's over the radio. Waxahachie scored first and naturally I nearly went wild. But when Waco did start scoring OH Boy! The final score was 24 to 7. Waco was tickled pea green and purple. Right after the game we decided to have a parade. So we got in a long line and started from the Cotton Palace gates and walked and ran running most of the way right up Clay Avenue. Everyone screaming at the top of their voices. We held up automobiles and street cars. We ran right through the signals on 8th street and on down Austin with everyone grinning at us
" Then she describes a trip to Dallas and goes to The Majestic Highland Park Fair Park Grounds Scenic Railway called "The Lightening" the Jefferson Hotel and their $50000 fountain and the Grand Parade. These type of entries from her high school years stop on December 7th 1926. She then starts writing again on August 5th 1929 telling of her trip to Corpus Christi and San Antonio which is 4 pages long. After that is another trip on June 24th 1930 to Arkansas and Reservation Mt. and the Belvedere Nightclub. That trip consists of 3 ½ pages. Because Ellen writes in a large ledger that measures about 8" x 12.5" you get a lot of writing per page. As with all diaries lots of names are mentioned. In Ellen's she talks about; Leslie Davis Ernest Waldorf her teachers Waller Christian and Payne. Also Joe McClain Garnett Dodson Dell Scott Moorman Elizabeth Comley Boody Johnson Miss Leslie George Fall Wier Washam Charlie Taylor Tyson Burl Hotman Armstrong Claude Meadows and more. One of the pieces of ephemera is a city brochure from 1925. It has several business' represented inside such as; Morrison's Famous Soda Fountain Stratton-Stricker Furniture Elite Café hardin Kelly Drug Co. The Thompson Studio Purity Ice Cream Co. Hippodrome Theatre Stringfellow's Barber Shop Cayle Printing Co. Ed Bauerle Jewelry and a few more. On offer is a super original historic 1943 manuscript and ephemeral relic of the United States War effort American enthusiasm for the cause and a fascinating home front look at a young American woman's contribution and service. Handwritten by 25 year old Ellen Frances Tobey later Washburn of Kittery Point Maine she worked at the Portsmouth Naval Ship Yard and kept a small 2½ x 4¼ inch diary wherein Ellen did a wonderful job filling the small book with all the details and duties of her life and those around her. Of particular interest to historians and collectors of the war ephemera will be the treasured mementoes Ellen included in the book being 19 launch tags each created to commemorate the completion and launching of submarines that would soon confront the German and Japanese navies. The submarines launched are: USS Capelin USS Crevalle USS Apogon USS Batfish the renowned USS Archerfish USS Burrfish USS Sand Lance USS Pampanito USS Picuda USS Parche USS Bang USS Pilotfish USS Pintado USS Pipefish USS Pomfret USS Sterlet USS Piranha USS Plaice and the USS Queenfish. Ellen a very active Pythian sister was born January 9th1918 died in April 1st 2000 was we believe in the purchase section of the supply department for the Navy Yard and seems to have made a point of attending the submarine launches. The launch tags are stapled by the string not the tag itself into the diary on the days of the launch. Overall the book and the tags are VG. BIO NOTES: LIVERMORE FALLS Maine - Ellen F. Washburn 82 died late Sunday night April 1 in the comfort of her home on Munsey Avenue with her family at her side. She was born Jan. 9 1918 in Kittery Point Maine the daughter of Charles G. and Cordelia Wildes Tobey. She received her education in Beverly Mass. graduating from Beverly High School in the Class of '35. She continued her education at Hawthorne Business School in Salem Mass. She was employed at a fish market in Salem Mass. and moved back to Kittery Point where she was employed by a finance company. She retired from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard after 20 years of service and on August 25 1962 married S. Paul Washburn at the Kittery Point Congregational Church. After moving to Livermore Falls she was one of the first employees during the construction of the Androscoggin Mill International Paper Co. and worked in the engineering department. He later was a bookkeeper for New England Furniture Co. and Dunton Department Stores in Livermore Falls. She was active in many fraternal organizations. She was a 50-year member of the Rebekahs the Order of the Eastern Star and Pythian Sisters. Boston Massachusetts MA. Good. 1892. Cloth. This is the hand-written diary of Ellen M. Handy wife of Captain Charles Handy from somewhere near Boston Massachusetts. The diary which measures 3 1/4" by 6" is written in an 1892 book with some of the dates changed to 1893. There are entries for every day most averaging a few sentences but some are merely a brief mention of the weather. She writes about her three or four children one appears to be married one in college one still in school and about her husband's ship refers to it as "the vessel" his cargoes and various trips. Some of the town names mentioned are Boston Bridgewater New Bedford Mattapoisett Providence Newport Wareham Fall River Middleboro Cataumet Fort Phoenix Stonington Red Hook Palmers Island and Marion. Many people's names are mentioned some by first or last name only. Some are: Mrs. Hadley Mrs. Willis Ed Luce Linus Rider Alfred Parker Charles Hammond Gertrude Blankenship Edith Thomas Fred Vose Mary Weeks Rufus Brett. The diarist writes of daily activities visits made and received entertainments some birthdays her husband turns 61 births deaths. Some of the entries mention going "May flowering" loading box boards for New York went to hear Phillips Brooks speak frost in June a lawn party saw a wrecked vessel got a watermelon went "graping" put up huckleberries took Mr. Weeks to the Insane Asylum got mantels for the new house. Her spelling and grammar are very good and the writing is easy to read. Near Rochester New York. Good. 1928. Devotees of the art of the diarist will find nirvana with Ellen Wilson. Each of the four diaries in this archive was received as a gift from intimate and far-flung family so-well known is Ellen's passion for writing in her diary. It is her sister best friend and confessor and recorder of all events important to Ellen's world - local and international. She is a huge fan of Charles Lindbergh and some months it seems that his travels exploits and tragedies are foremost in Ellen's daily entries. At one point she exclaims she had never been interested in South or Central America until she began following Lindbergh's Central American tour. Distances feats and accomplishments are all annotated. Here's a wonderful quote from Ellen which I think sums it all up: New Year Day 1940: after a long write up of the day's events ".then I had a short rest then did my first writing in this my new 1940 diary. I keep a diary because I like to do it. I live a very quiet uneventful life and I can record these things each day to my confidante the diary." Truly remarkable coming from a woman who is mother grandmother and great-grandmother wife to a police or fireman reference of a station house involved with family and community that writes page after page of comings and goings and doings. For example here are just a few lines of the 1935 and she mentions the trial throughout the diary; "The trial of Bruno Richard Hauptmann swings into action today Jan.3rd. Lindbergh's testimony will be one of the highlights of the trial." She speaks of the evidence they find against Hauptmann. On March 1st-" the 3rd anniversary of the fatal night on the Lindbergh Baby - Hauptmann is in NJ death house convicted as the sole perpetrator of the kidnap/killings as they found $15000 on Hauptman premises of the $50000 ransom". On Feb.12 Ellen Wilson Birthday "another milestone is passed and I will go on not knowing what awaits me". She and Agnes went to the movies to see Katherine Hepburn in "The Little Ministers." Agnes and her talk about the "going away of her son Harry and it left me feeling so lonely & just revived hurt & loss of my boy all over again." There is also mention of Oliver Wendall Holmes 93 yrs old jurist "gravely ill with bronchial pneumonia. Many went to pay their respect to one of the nations best-loved man." Speaks about Amelia Earhart; "1st flyer to cover 2100 miles to NY without stopping". Ellen is following the War in Europe noting number of Nazi planes downed versus British. She is keenly aware that the War is a danger to civilization and makes many anti-German notes and prays for the prisoners in "their nasty detention camps." She also puts newspaper clippings stamps pictures within the text or on the address pages. She has family named Wilson in Kansas as evidenced by the gift inscription on the 1928 diary. There are some water stains some splits to the cover/spine edge and a mouse has nibbled at the top edge front cover of 1928 but otherwise in very good shape.
