‎Early Huron Houses - Book No. 1 - Three on the Huron Road‎

‎Goderich Ontario: Self-Published. Very Good. 1965. First Edition. Paperback. Describes the histories of "three homes found in a group about one and a half miles east of Goderich Ontario on number 8 Highway. They have long been of local interest and the cause of road stops by admiring passers-by. Few inland Ontario farm homes can count as a long-time occupant the grandson of an English Earl and reflect the gracious manner in which he lived as does the Curzon house. Few can rival the stateliness of the stone Rundle residence with its winding drive and its magnificent setting high on the banks of the Maitland River. Few too match the eye-catching appeal of the Laithwaite farm with its pleasing one hundred and thirty year old farmhouse and its five lawns adorned with statuary. This book presents these homes not so much for their architectural quality or impressiveness but for the eloquent record they furnish of the work aspirations and everyday life of their builders and other occupants in the early years of the twentieth century." - Foreword. p. 4 22. Black and white reproductions of archival photos. Clean and unmarked with light wear. A quality copy. Bishop p.1084.; 8vo . Self-Published paperback‎

‎Ellis, George Edward.‎

‎MEMOIR OF SIR BENJAMIN THOMPSON, COUNT RUMFORD, With Notices of His Daughter. Published in connection with an edition of Rumford's complete works, by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Boston.‎

‎pp. xvi, 680 + full page plates. Very XLib. Many signatures loose. Large 8vo. Original full cloth binding, worn. Hardbound. Poor copy. The career and accomplishments of the American born Count Rumford (1753-1814) are quite remarkable. Thompson was an active and prolific inventor, developing improvements for chimneys, fireplaces and industrial furnaces, as well as inventing the double boiler, a kitchen range, and a drip coffeepot. He invented a percolating coffee pot following his pioneering work with the Bavarian Army, where he improved the diet of the soldiers as well as their clothes. The Rumford fireplace created a sensation in London when he introduced the idea of restricting the chimney opening to increase the updraught, which was a much more efficient way to heat a room than earlier fireplaces. **PRICE JUST REDUCED!

‎1925-1926 Letters from a Globetrotter Volume 2 Written for Members of the Round-the-World Society: Real Letters with Stamps Postmarks and Cancels‎

‎Morocco Spain Monaco Italy Greece: Round-The-World Society. Very Good. 1926. Hardcover. On offer is a wonderfully preserved book of vintage stamped letters from 1925 and 1926. One of only a handful still in circulation "Letters from a Globetrotter" is a travelogue in the form of a series of subscription letters written by Elmer D. Raymond founder and president of the Round-the-World Society. This particular collection’s title page has "Volume Two" printed on it. Included in the book are close to 30 typewritten mimeographed letters over 65 real stamps with postmarks and cancels and three black and white photo plates. There is also a fold-out map of the world and a black sketch with blue background drawn by the author. Each letter in this collection is numbered with a roman numeral LIII being the first and addressed to Mrs. Geo W Acker of Port Gibson Mississippi. The return address of the letters is the Round-The-World Society in New York NY. The letters include stamps on the front some letters with one stamp and some with up to five or ten and about three pages of typed text inside. Every letter is titled eg "THE FOUR CITIES OF THE SEVEN HILLS" and includes a location at the top before the greeting of "Dear Friend: -" The contents of the letters are fascinating as Raymond uses his words to paint vivid pictures of the people culture history and current events of the places he visits. The travelogue begins en route to Fez Morocco with letter LIII. Raymond sets the scene writing "To-day we are awakened by the bells of a caravan drawing through Taza. First you think Santa Claus is paying a belated visit but soon you hear the shouts of the driver: 'Ahr zitt! Ahr zitt! ' Santa Claus wouldn’t talk Arabic to his reindeers." Raymond travels around Morocco before moving on to Monaco and into Italy. The collection ends with letter LXXIX in Greece. The leatherette two-hole binder measures 6" x 9". The screw posts used for binding are intact and the cover letters map plates and stamps within are in great condition. In this stunning artefact of travel writing Raymond captures the reader’s imagination from the opening lines of each letter. He provides a remarkable illustrated depiction of one possibly American man’s travels in North Africa and Europe in the 1920s. For a collector there is a wealth of stamps mailed to the United States from numerous fascinating locations. This is one of two volumes of "Letters from a Globetrotter" in our collection. Both are relatively unique with overlap of only twelve letters and three photograph plates. ; Letters; 8vo 6" x 9" . Round-The-World Society hardcover‎

‎1925-1926 Letters from a Globetrotter Volume 1 Written for Members of the Round-The-World Society: Real Letters with Stamps Postmarks and Cancels‎

‎Arctic Europe North Africa: Round-The-World Society. Very Good. 1925. Full-Leather. On offer is an amazing vintage book of letters from 1925 to 1926. One of only a handful still in circulation "Letters from a Globetrotter" is a travelogue in the form of a series of subscription letters written by Elmer D. Raymond founder and president of the Round-the-World Society. Included in the book are approximately 150 pages describing Raymond's voyages photo plates a fold-out map of the world and approximately 140 real stamps all with postmarks dated 1925 and 1926. The return address of the letters is the Round-The-World Society in New York NY. There are more than 45 letters contained within this book each addressed to Mrs. Harriet H. Hale of New Haven Connecticut. The letters include stamps with postmarks and cancels on the front some letters with one stamp and some with up to five or ten and about three pages of typed text inside. Every letter is titled eg "ON THE TRAIL OF BARENTS" and includes a location at the top before the greeting of "Dear Friend: -" In addition to the typed letters there is a sketch of a ship by Raymond himself and some 16 black and white plates with photographs capturing images from the various locations Raymond visited. The first 13 letters are not numbered but the 14th is labelled XXVII. All the letters that follow are similarly labelled with Roman numerals in sequence. Some appear to be missing--for example the numbers skip from XXX to XXXIII. The travelogue begins at the North Cape Norway where Raymond describes seeing Europe from where he sits: "There beyond the thick dull curtain of fog lies the most interesting and colorful continent of the world Europe." The author states that this is the first of his Arctic letters. He goes on to write from Greenland Bear Island Spitzbergen and the North Pole. Next he sails to Antwerp and visits various locations in Germany France and Monaco. Then he moves on to North Africa where he describes places including Tunisia Algeria and Morocco. The descriptions are colorful and entertaining and provide an interesting look at these various communities through the eyes of a man who is likely American or English. He writes of a visit to Ruisseau des Singes in Algeria saying "Some of the monkeys get so bold as to put their hands into our pockets searching for hidden peanuts. One of them finds a shiny coin and steals it. He climbs a tree and sits on a branch. Fingering the coin he examines it carefully." The letters conclude with a flight from Tangier to Gibraltar and a trip into Spain where the letters end with letter number LXIV: "A Bullfight in Seville". The leatherette two-hole binder measures 6" x 9". The screw posts used for binding are missing but could easily be replaced. There is some general wear to the leather. The letters map plates and stamps within are in great condition. This well-written detailed collection of letters paints a vivid picture of one man’s travels from Norway to the North Pole and south to North Africa. The photo plates give us a beautiful visual of what Raymond describes with words. For a collector there is a wealth of stamps mailed to the United States from numerous fascinating locations. This is one of two volumes of "Letters from a Globetrotter" in our collection. Both are relatively unique with overlap of only twelve letters and three photograph plates. ; Manuscript; 8vo - 6" x 9"; KEYWORDS: ELMER D.
