Emily Caroline Smith
1913-1914 Diary of a Single Morris County NJ Woman with Close Familial Ties to the Col Hiram Smith Mayflower Settlers and an Heir to the Smith/baldwin House Writing As WWI Commenced
Morris County New Jersey: Morris County New Jersey Mayflower Baldwin House. Good with no dust jacket. 1913-1914. Hardcover. On offer is a very well-written diary of a New Jersey woman written at the beginning of WWI This diary measures 6 inches by 3 inches and contains 365 pages. It is approximately 85% complete. The covers are in good condition with some light wear marks. The spine and binding are also in good condition as are the pages. The handwriting is legible. The author of this diary is Emily Caroline Smith. She lived in Boonton NJ. She was born in April 1876 and lived her entire life in Morris County NJ. She passed away in 1956 at the age of 80. Smith is 37 when she writes this diary. The diary covers 1913 as well as a number of entries for 1914. On her mother's side Smith was a direct descendent of one of the Mayflower settlers. Her paternal great grandfather was Col Hiram Smith. Smith was a veteran of the American Revolutionary War and afterwards played a prominent role in his community. He was variously Justice of the Peace County Judge Sheriff of Morris Co member of the NJ Legislature Major and then Lt. Col in the New Jersey Militia. His son Hiram Smith Jr. Was a wealthy farmer and property investor. In 1833 he purchased a home that had been built in 1811. That house known today as the Smith / Baldwin House remained in the family until 2013 when the local government purchased it as a historical property. When he died he left his estate to his son Richard Emily's father. In time Emily and her sister Marjory inherited the property. Emily sold her share to her sister in 1909. Some moments from Emily's diary are captured here: "Horrors. Another birthday! Did a lot of shopping in A. M. took O'Dally to the 4: 00 boat. ." Apr 5 1913; "Afternoon to Settlement House to help Deaconess. Called on Mrs. Anderson and Mrs. Barclay in the hospital. Evening played bridge with Capt. Colday Miss and Luther." Aug 5 1913; "Authors Reading for Hosp. Geo Ade and Sewell Ford read from their stories." Feb 18 1914; "Rainy day - Marjorie came up in A. M. . Sue and I went down home for supper. Back to in violent rain." Nov 15 1914; "Marjorie came up for all day. We started the childrens comfortables. A stormy day." Dec 9 1914. For a local historian this is an excellent direct connect to a family with a long history and deep roots in their community. For a researcher in Women's Studies this diary offers a very good look at the world of a single relatively well-off woman at the turn of the last century and the attitudes and expectations prevalent at that time.; Manuscripts; 32mo 4" - 5" tall; 365 pages; KEYWORDS: HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUITÉ CONTRAT VÉLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGÜEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL Emily C. Emily Mary Kehoe
1933-1937 Diary Following a Pennsylvania Girl from Pre-Teen to High School Senior
Philadelphia PA Pennsylvania. Poor with no dust jacket. Hardcover. On offer is a fascinating 5 year diary of Emily Mary Kehoe 1920-2013 who writes from age 12 through 17. Born in Manhattan Emily is in her final year of middle school and becomes a teenager on August 2 1933. She keeps the diary until age 17 when she is a senior in high school. In Fall of 1933 Emily begins at Tredyffrin Easttown High School in Berwyn Pennsylvania. Following graduation Emily would go on to attend Ursinus College in Collegeville PA. In 1952 she married Raymond Emanuel Fahnestock 1923-1975. Raymond served in WWII in the 43rd and 63rd Bomb Squads. It does not appear that they had any children though data was somewhat lacking in researching this couple. Although born in Manhattan Emily was raised and settled in Pennsylvania. Emily keeps her diary during the depths of the Great Depression though the world is viewed through the eyes of a child blissfully focused on the coming-of-age events that define a young womans life. She begins with optimism and hope listing the resolutions she has made for herself in 1933: I resolve to: Be more helpful to Mother and Dad/Avoid quarrelling with Honey & Ted/Keep my room closet and dresser neat/Take disappointments quietly/ Keep the friends I have and make more/Keep up in all schoolworkfrontspiece. Her diary records the expected events of a young lady's life. She talks about school and friends. Emily keeps her diary religiously in 1933 and 1934. Her entries become very spotty after that with few entries in the final three years. Her last entry in the diary is on Sept 24 1937. Some excerpts give the flavour of Emilys entries: Wed. Cloudy. Cold. School. We won in gym 12-6. Did errands. Put time in on machine. Homework. Bed. In assembly name was called for being on honor roll. Signed book Jan 25 1933. Raining. March 7 1937. She makes little reference to the turbulent outside events that affecting so many other Americans. In this her diary offers an interesting view of life in those difficult times. For a social historian this offers a contrast to the journals that describe events from a wider perspective on just how difficult it was living in these time. It is an especially valuable piece as it shows life from the perspective of a child. The diary measures 5x3.75 inches has 365 pages and is approximately 55% complete. The front cover is missing as is the clasp on the locking strap. The spine and binding are barely intact and worn to the point that the back cover may separate in shipping. The pages are all intact and the handwriting is legible. Overall Poor. ; Manuscripts; 24mo 5" - 6" tall; 365 pages; Signed by Author . hardcover

EMMA FREIDA GERZ
1912 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY AN ENIGMATIC YOUNG LOS ANGELES WOMAN TRYING TO BECOME A STAGE ACTRESS ONLY TO BE OUTRAGED WHEN SHE IS CAST AS A 'NEGRO MAMMY'
LOS ANGELES CALIFORNIA CA PEDRO. Good. 1912. On offer is a fascinating enigmatic original 1912 Los Angeles California manuscript diary handwritten by Miss Emma Gerz. A secretary we believe who employs shorthand throughout the 95% filled diary which makes for very intriguing reading. While she is rather open in regular cursive one can only imagine some of her perhaps more intimate entries and more cutting comments she is sometimes catty. We also learn she went on picnics the different plays she's in taking lessons a fellow she likes named Billy a man asking her to go to the beach sometime and her telling him off life with her parents and that she plays basketball and goes to the gymnasium regularly for theatrical rehearsals. Talented enough at piano she gives lessons her first love is the stage and she tries out for a number over the year; when she finds out her part she is outraged: 'Went to see Mr. Earnest and he gave me the part of a Negro mammy ah
.shorthand
.mama is angry about it too.' Miss Gerz in general is not a happy person though for the most part though she is surrounded by friends has dates goes to nice restaurants and sees shows and does get parts in productions. She suffers from headaches feels low and bemoans her luck: 'No one called. Guess our phone has forgotten how to ring.' Eeyore has nothing on Emma Gerz. She has a large circle of friends through clubs and such and there appears to be a big connection with the German community as most of the people she mentions have Germanic last names. She moves about Los Angeles almost daily as she attends 'Masquerade' exercises climbing Figueroa hill gives piano lessons going to the Wallis Dramatic School and much much more. Fascinating look at this intriguing young woman's life in Los Angeles with the back drop of the early motion picture business happening all around her. EMMA JANE SMITH
1919 - 1921 FASCINATING POST WORLD WAR I MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A PIOUS WOMAN IN SERVICE TO A CORNWALL ENGLAND FAMILY
CORNWALL ENGLAND UNITED KINGDOM UK. Good. 1919. On offer is a diary that provides a fascinating look into the life of a 41 year old woman who works in service to an English family immediately following WWI The notebook is in very good condition and the entries are quite legible. It measures 8 in by 6 1/2 in and contains 141 pages. It is 100% complete. It covers the time period Jan 1st 1919 until Oct 24th 1921. Two to three entries are made each week. Church life plays a very important role and virtually every entry contains quotes from scripture or references to going to church services quite regularly. There is little reference to her daily tasks other than passing remarks about going shopping or having a difficult day with a child. Most geographical references are to locations in Cornwall UK. 'Wingfield' is frequently referenced as home and it was located on the edge of Plymouth. This is confirmed by numerous references to 'the Hoe' a large open space in Plymouth. She has a very active social life with a small group of friends and daily rounds of meeting for tea going bathing swimming together and long walks comprise much of her entries. There is little reference to events in the outside world. ". Went down and walked along the sands sat on high rock after and did some knitting. Peace Treaty was signed at Versailles this afternoon" June 28 1919."Went over to Penhenver in the morning to see submarine k14 pass" Sept 1st 1919. Most entries are similar to these: "Went to the Meeting church service in the morning & called to see Ethel D who is so ill. Went over to see A and H and had tea there. 12 altogether at tea and Mr. Gully was there - the blind brother. I enjoyed it very much. Went to the gospel and Mr. G preached Acts 7:55 ." Sept 28 1919. "Paid a visit at last to Mrs Bowen felt impressed to go since getting up. I had a very happy time with her one felt the warmth of Christian love coming out. After tea I called to see Ethel D. She is still very ill" Oct 8t 1919. "Mr. G went to Newquay today also Mr. T to see about electric lights for "Rockland" Mar 9 1920. "It is a lovely day today. We took our tea to Porth and had it on the rocks the waves dashing up. 11 years today on a Friday John passed away I thought about him" Apr 16 1920. And so the entries go - much focused on her immediate life and those in her small circle of friends. This diary gives a wonderful look inside what may appear to be an ordinary unremarkable life. But closer scrutiny can yield many nuggets of information for a social historian or someone involved in gender studies. It offers a great deal of local information about places in Cornwall UK.; Manuscript; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF CORNWALL UK ENGLAND BRITAIN SOUTH WEST ENGLAND EMMA JANE SMITH PLYMOUTH UK THE HOE NEWQUAY WINGFIELD HALT PENHENVER GENDER STUDIES POST WW1 PERIOD IN BRITAIN 1920S 1910S EARLY 20TH CENTURY ROARING TWENTIES IN BRITAIN LIFESTYLE IN 1920'S BRITAIN WOMEN IN INTERWAR ENGLAND SMALL-TOWN LIFE IN INTERWAR ENGLAND CORNISH GENEALOGY CORNWALL LOCAL HISTORY LIFE IN CORNWALL BETWEEN THE WARS HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS DIARY DIARIES JOURNALS PERSONAL HISTORY SOCIAL HISTORY HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUITÉ CONTRAT VÉLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGÜEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . unknown

EMMA JUNE HIBB
1927 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT EUROPEAN TRAVEL DIARY OF A KEEN EYED FLORIDIAN
SARASOTA MANATEE FLORIDA FL ASEA TO EUROPE. Very Good. 1927. Manuscript. On offer is a very good pre Depression era European travel diary handwritten by Emma June Hibb of Manatee Florida not too far from Sarasota. Mrs. Hibb is a keen observer and dedicated diarist traveling with a large group of Floridians from September 6 1927 through October 11th when they return to New York. A quirky writer going from catty commentary - her girlfriend is miffed that they are traveling with so many of the people she can't stand from back in Florida to her observation that some men aboard ship sure do change their attitude when they discover a woman is married and her husband is also aboard ship. Emma also captures some choice moments on tour especially moving a passage wherein a French woman recognizes them for Americans and rushes over to embrace them all the while holding their hands and weeping in a thank you obviously the under current being the strong emotions still attached to the 'Great War' but 9 years in the past. She has the great habit of giving people nicknames based on place or memorable trait - Budwieser Iowa Carolina and West Palm to mention a few. The book has 2 pages filled with autographs from shipmates and Emma overwrites the book proper using the alphabet address area for other daily entries. This is a lovely travel diary of a woman with personality and keen eye. EMMA L KITCHELL [nee REYNOLDS]
1863 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT NEW JERSEY CIVIL WAR HOMEFRONT DIARY OF A 29 YR OLD WOMAN HOPING TO BE A BETTER CHRISTIAN IN THE NEW YEAR
NEWARK MENDHAM NEW JERSEY NJ. Good. 1863. On offer is a nice original manuscript relic of the Civil War year of 1863 handwritten by Emma L. Kitchell nee Reynolds of Mendham and Newark New Jersey. Emma seems to be a down to earth hardworking woman who on New Year's Day hopes the coming year finds her a better Christian. In fact the thread of religion winds its way throughout the narrative. On her 29th birthday January 27th she writes that 'about a year since I gave myself to God. Oh how unfaithful I have been. I have been devoted to God. May this year see me more.' There are some reports of the war but the year seems to be one of sickness: children with the measles bad colds sore throats fevers . Never-ending work constant sickness the war and Emma continues to 'chore'. The in February Emma writes: 'Decided to go to H & L Entertainments. Quite a treat for me to go out an evening.' Collectors historians and researchers of this era and the New Jersey area will find a treasure trove of names and local events observed and noted by Emma. In the back of the diary are cash account spending records etc. This leather diary measures 4" x 3" and overall is G.; Manuscript; 48mo - over 3" - 4" tall; KEYWORDS: NEW JERSEY NJ RELIGION CHRISTIAN BAPTIST DEDICATION TO GOD KITCHELL MENDHAM NEWARK HOMEFRONT GENEALOGY CIVIL WAR GENDER STUDIES WOMEN'S STUDIES PRE SUFFRAGE HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH DIARY JOURNAL LOG KEEPSAKE WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS DIARIES JOURNALS LOGS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL PERSONAL HISTORY AMERICANA antiquité contrat vélin document manuscrit papier Antike Brief Pergament Dokument Manuskript Papier oggetto d'antiquariato atto velina documento manoscritto carta antigüedad hecho vitela documento manuscrito Papel . hardcover

Emmanuelle Soeur Asso Philippe
Richesse De La Pauvrete
Flammarion 2001 180 pages in8. 2001. Broché. 180 pages.
