1899 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY DETAILING THE LIFE OF A 2nd GENERATION JEWISH WOMAN THE DAUGHTER OF GERMAN JEWISH IMMIGRANTS CHASING THE AMERICAN DREAM
WILKES-BARRE PENNSYLVANIA WYOMING CANYON COALFIELD. Good. 1899. On offer is an interesting diary written at the turn of the century by an educated woman in a major American industrial city. Measuring 4.75 inches by 3 inches this diary is in good condition. It contains 122 pages of entries plus and extensive memoranda section of 72 pages. The memoranda section includes contacts cash accounts as well as notes. The handwriting is legible. Also included are to very small newspaper clippings. One which appears to be dated July 14 1899 is an ad for a teacher. Estelle Stella Jacobosky is a 24 year old woman who is beginning her career as a teacher. She was born in 1875 in Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania. Her parents were Jewish immigrants from Germany coming to America about the year 1861. Wilkes-Barre is located adjacent to the Wyoming Valley coalfield - the largest coalfield in the United States in the 2nd half of the 19th century. Her parents were part of the hundreds of thousands of immigrants that flooded into the area from Europe to meet the demands for an expanding workforce. Wilkes-Barre flourished and grew into an industrial and economic powerhouse. Local newspapers record her success in elementary and secondary school and her early years in education. She worked in Philadelphia New Jersey and Long Island as a substitute or supply teacher before returning to Wilkes-Barre where she assumed the role of teacher and head teacher/principal in Carnegie Pennsylvania near Pittsburgh In 1904 Stella married Harry Sumner Witmer. They made their home in Aspinwall PA where he worked as an accountant. They had had three sons. Stella passed away in 1955 at the age of 79. The diary is a record of her work as a teacher as well as her social life. Got up at 7:30 A.M. Went on 8:40 car. Home at 4:15 P.M. Dressed. Went sleighriding at 4:30 with Hal W Mrs. Witmer Mrs. Conner and Rose. Home at 6:00P.M. After supper to tailors. Came home and served. Hal called at 9 P.M. Retired 10:30 P.M. Jan 4 1899 Hal W is in fact the man she marries 5 years later. Got up 7:30 A.M. Taught school all day. Home 4:15 P.M. First day in school since I got back from N.Y. Home all evening and write letters. Retired 11:30 P.M. Mar 7 1899 Taught school all day. . Home 4:30 P.M. Went up town after school. In evening went to see Mable Edgar then took a walk. Had company May 19 1899 Arose 8:30 A.A. Started "A Tent of Grace" by a Jewess. Mrs. Taylor called in morning. Mrs. Conners Mrs Barrosti Rose and I went to matinee. Caught in rain . Home all evening. Sept 19 1899 Her cash accounts reveal things like her earnings $45.00 for the months shown the costs of many daily items such as streetcar fare 10¢ tooth powder 25¢ and thread 28¢. There is an extensive list of the people with whom she socialized with and called upon. For a genealogist this is an excellent record of many different family names all situated in a particular place and time. It is valuable cross-reference tool for family research. NEW YORK NY LOS ANGELES CA. Good. 1947. On offer is an absolutely fascinating collection of letters written in the immediate post-war years in New Your City. The collection contains 142 pages. The letters are of varying sizes. Most are handwritten and the writing is legible. Several are typed. The letters are in good condition. The letters are mostly written by a young Jewish girl named Estelle Mandelbaum who lives in the Bronx. The letters were written between 1947 and 1950. Context indicates that she is a young woman and the letters span high school completion and studies at Brooklyn College. Most of the letters are written by Estelle to her boyfriend a young man names Lenny Pitt who has moved to Los Angeles to attend California College. Several letters are also correspondence between Lenny and another friend Jerry Mintz. Research suggests Lenny Pitt may very well be Leonard Pitt noted historian and author and as such these letters make for a rare and fascinating look into the formative late teenage years of this noted academic. The letters are funny sometimes insightful profane and very much stream-of consciousness narrative. "Dearest Estelle - Hello. I wish I could explain how elevated I feel before my feelings run out. . I wish you were here. Or me in New York. I miss you. I don't know what love is. I'm too afraid to think logically about it or to let myself fall in love. I miss you though. I would want to be married to you at this moment." undated letter from Lenny to Estelle: "Most important is that I have needed you more strongly sanely and deeply since I have gone to school than ever before. Emotionally. Right now I have just finished reading some love poetry that I connected with you and they have made me sick with need for you physically for the first time." undated letter from Estelle to Lenny. Much of the writing has that earnest quality that comes from first exposures to ideas and attitudes in a College setting. ". I'm glad you finally recognized that you must become independent from your family. It's more important than anything you've said so far. We were discussing middle class parental attitudes towards children in English a few months ago. And it made me see a lot of the fragments I had discovered in a sensible pattern. It made the desire for separation from them logical to me and I realized it was right and necessary for me if I didn't want to cripple myself completely. It's a little comical that I actually felt guilty for not loving my parents after their suffering sacrifice and work . But actually it's the child who sacrifices to the parents and is tricked and shamed into it usually ." undated letter from Estelle to Lenny. One of the letters paints a disturbing picture of the racial discrimination that Black Americans faced and another passage immediately calls to mind the antics of Corporal Klinger in M.A.S.H. In that exchange between Jerry Mintz and his friend Lenny Jerry writes: ". This Miami is a stinking corrupt stupid hole. In order to work at Miami Beach the negroes have to get a special police permit - with their picture on it - a blood test - nobody says 'negro. They're not allowed to live here. In the liquor stores and bars in the negro section they keep stocks of cheap calico dresses and pairs of old shoes. The colored kids come in and they get a couple of pieces of the shit. This is so parents won't spend any money for clothes for them and will spend their money for drinks. Very disgusting low place. I took a leave of absence in the middle of the term in school - but I'll go back - if the fucking army doesn't grab me first. I'm finding ways to get out - rabbinical student - bed pisser -sleep walker ." undated letter between Jerry and Lenny. Meadville Cleveland Youngstown Pennsylvania PA. Good. 1919. On offer is the 1919 diary of Esther A. Walling of Meadville Pennsylvania. She is a very proud and at that time female Railroad Clerk at the Erie Railroad Office. Her brother with whom she lives is Frank. He is also a railroad clerk and a person she loves very much. She goes to church on Sundays and is often on trips to Cleveland Youngstown and Jamestown for fun weekends of shopping and entertainment with her girlfriends or brother. There are just a few entries until late February in which Esther takes a trip to Cleveland with her girlfriends. "Saturday February 22 We went shopping today and purchased this book also the picture "On the River Tiber." We went to the play "The Girl Behind the Gun" this afternoon and in the evening went to the Hippodrome. Aunt Attie met us & we took her to supper in the old arcade. We stayed at the Hotel Winton." She seems to have some pretty strong union sympathies often going to "Brotherhood of Railway Clerks" later known as the Transportation Communications International Union and speaking enthusiastically of the meetings and the new members initiated during the year. The early 20th century was a high time for labor movements in America and it was not uncommon to find strong believers in unions at this time. In May she and Frank go to Chicago to meet their mother who is returning from vacation in California. They spend a few days in the city shopping seeing sights and meeting friends. The entries are fairly irregular in their frequency. They tend to be most regular when Esther is on a trip outside of Meadville. During these trips there are usually entries written everyday until she comes back home in which they resume the frequency of two or three entries every week. July and September are the most consistent with entries almost everyday. The summer is filled with work small weekend trips meetings of the "Brotherhood" and much small town entertainment such as parades fireworks concerts and leisurely drives in her brother's 1919 Ford. In mid-October Esther takes a nice vacation with her girlfriend Hazel They go to Washington D.C. first and take in the famous sights. "Took sightseeing car around Wash. visited Capitol museum etc. In afternoon we went to Arlington VA. saw the wireless station where the time is sent daily over the country and many historical places." They go from Arlington to Mt. Vernon and visit Washington's home then off to to Philadelphia where they see the Liberty Bell and other attractions. From Philadelphia they move on to New York getting in at Grand Central Station. They do not stay long in the city as they have a same day train to Boston. "Monday October 20. We went in Sightseeing car to Lexington & Concord. Most interesting trip we took. Saw Harvard College and went in John Hancock's old home; saw homes of many authors poets and noted people." A few days later they are back home in Meadville. The rest of the year is back to normal for Esther. Esther's handwriting is simple and easy to read done mostly in ink with the exception of a few entries near the end of the year. The front and back cover are slightly detached from the paper. Mild age-toning to pages and some discoloration caused by newspaper clippings pasted to a few pages throughout the year mostly about birth and wedding announcements. There is also a small piece of ephemera in the book a letter from the office of D.G. Snodgrass M.D. that reads "July 27th 1918. Rec'd Esther Welling one dollar for vaccination. D.G. Snodgrass MD." Why this letter is in the book is not noted. Examples of text: "Thursday March 6. A number of other Erie girls & I attended the annual Fried Turkey supper at the Baptist Church this evening. Fine supper. After the supper we went to on Centre St. where an assistant organizer attempted to organize a local lodge of Railroad clerks." ; "Tuesday April 22. Went to lodge "Brotherhood of Railway Clerks" tonight. Good attendance. Nineteen new members were taken in and several names proposed for initiation at next meeting."; "Saturday August 16. The first annual picnic of the Erie RR Shops & Offices was held at Celeron today. Special train of 19 coaches left at 8:15 A.M. returning on special train leaving Jamestown at 11:30 P.M. There was a terrible storm & cyclone at Celeron."; "Sunday September 7. Slept till 10:30. Willie came up to attend the clam bake at Oakwood Park for Bessemen employers. An aeroplane passed over the city this A.M." Background - As related in the August 1919 issue of Erie Railroad Magazine the USRA found that nationwide 101785 women were working at railroad occupations at the high point of female employment October 1 1918. The Erie accounted for 11 percent of that total employing 10274 women in various job categories. LYCOMING COUNTY PENNSYLVANIA STEUBEN COUNTY NY. Good. 1895. On offer is the super original manuscript diary handwritten by Esther Marie Gernit Bullock b.1852 who lived in or around Lycoming County Pennsylvania or Steuben County New York. She is married to Francis Joseph Bullock and they have four children; Charles Edgar Walter Herbert Allen Gernit and Edna Maria. This is a very large very full diary measuring about 7 ¾" x 13" with 250 pages of daily entries covering September 30th 1897 all the way through to April 6th 1900. We learn that three of her four children are no longer living with them or soon on their way out. This greatly affects Esther and on many occasions she talks about being so lonely and missing her children greatly. The family moves two times during the time span the diary represents but only to a different house or location in the village. The boys seem to work for the railroad and she doesn't like it at all because of how dangerous the work is. Frank is retired but seems to be looking for work. There is also talk of the Spanish American War her first grandchild born to Charles Edgar her grandmother Bullock passing away and the funeral traveling to the near by villages talk about how the New York Central Railroad Company has taken over the Fall Brook Central RR Company line Cyclone flooding and so much more. On numerous occasions she says her days are "terrible and tedious". She also writes a very intriguing entry on October 6th 1898 telling that something so terrible has happened and filled them all with so much grief that she can't write it down. I am afraid he will suffer with the cold." "March 5th Real pleasant. Frank worked for Mr. Buck. Walter and Allen worked. Mrs. Saxton went home this afternoon. Frank and I went over on Bridge Street to look at a house. We have decided to rent but do not know just when we will move. Mr. Lamb owns the house. It is only a little ways from Charles Edgar's so we went up there a few minutes." "April 6th Cold and snowed nearly all day. We have had a hard day. We finished moving. Charles Edgar and Walter both helped or I don't know as we would have got through today. Libbie came over and helped me straightened around some. She and Charles Edgar put down the carpet in my room and the boys and made up the beds. If they had not I am afraid we wouldn't have got much done for I am tired out and sick. I wish Allen could have been here to dinner then we could have all eaten together. Charles has gone to Williamsport tonight." "April 21st Cold again and rained some. Frank and the boys worked. Edna went over town this afternoon and while she was over there she heard that war has begun between the United States and Spain. And the papers are all full of war talk. Allen met me at the depot and Oh! How glad I was to see his dear face. Every time I looked at him it seems as if I am dreaming. Julia Stuart Dell and Edgar are all sick. Edgar is under the Dr.'s care. I have been sick all day but fell better tonight. Jesse Bullock's folks have a daughter It was born the morning of January 19th." I suppose this will be his last trip for the Fall Brook Company for next Monday the New York Central will take possession of the road and will be known as the Pennsylvania division of the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad. Edna and I cleaned house. This evening she has gone to a party." "June 9th Rather cool all forenoon but think it is some warmer this afternoon. Charles Edgar went to Lyons this noon. Mrs. Smith Housel Nell Westcott died this forenoon. Her baby was born the next day after Libbie's and it seems so sad she must die and leave it. I have been down to Charles Edgar's this afternoon. They must be close to the border too because most of the towns are along it. The diary's cover is very worn and torn but the pages and binding are very good. Morse a young Massachusetts woman in her junior year at Wellesley College. A gifted and self-aware diarist Ethel offers an extraordinary first-person account of womens higher education and same-sex emotional life at the turn of the century written decades before such affections could be safely expressed. The diary reveals the inner world of a bright privileged New England student raised in an academic household her father a teacher who struggles to reconcile intellectual ambition with forbidden desire. From a family of means Ethel writes with wit and precision but as would be expected of a young woman caught up in the throes of academia social pressures and romance her composure sometimes frays. She chronicles her daily life with a focus on her all-consuming attachment to another student named Anna. This love story which is likely largely occurring in Ethels own mind is frequently impeded by the rest of the girls social world. Evening spent mostly at Annas. Sort of puzzled in my mind. Cant decide upon somethingwhat happened between Grace and Anna when they were together a week ago Saturday. Mar. 3 1904. The rivalry soon becomes personal and wounding: What a cold reception from Grace! She evidently was overcome by pains of jealousy or something for she hardly spoke refused as near as possible to kiss me etc. Mar. 14 1904. From that moment forward the shifting loyalties between the three girls dominate Ethels emotional life. Her affection for Anna is openly romantic:

Feb. 9 1904. As the semester advances her self-reproach grows sharper:

Apr. 27 1904. Throughout Morse documents the emotional grammar of female friendship at Wellesleydeeply affectionate coded and often indistinguishable from romantic attachment. I doubt sometimes whether Anna cares for mein fact I know she doesnt fully reciprocate all I feel
Oh if only I didnt care so much for her! She is a regular spell to me. The minute I see her everything seems to be harder to say. Apr. 25 1904. In May she vows independence: In spite of everything I was going to forget about Anna and Ruth and live my life with nobility and power
Perhaps this is just what I need to make me strong in my own strength. May 25 1904. Longer excerpts that take us from the summer after junior year into the autumn of senior year give further flavour to Ethels diary: .Was surprised about one o'clock by Anna. Such a good time we had! We just talked talked and talked some more! It all seemed quite like old times. She looks yet very tired though. I fear that the hard work at home wears on other more than she realizes. July 11 1904. Anna here with us tonight. Arrived before I knew it.It seems too good to have the dear child here. There is something about her which I simply can't resist. When college closed I felt a little hardened toward her - I couldn't help it - but somehow I seem to have lost all that. To me she seems quite like her old self. Only I have knocked out a little of my foolishness in regard to her. I admit I was very foolish at one time. - but we all must be foolish in one way or another August 18 1904. Another beautiful day - only Anna had to go home. It seemed indeed lonely here tonight without her beside me in bed. I forgot to say anything about that heart to heart talk we had until 10 last night. We just opened right up for the first time since that little fuss this spring. We found we had both forgiven and almost forgotten as near as we could. We just discussed everything and felt better for it. She was so mad when I wrote her that last note but she never has said one word about it to her mother or any of the family. I thought once that she had and that they were a little prejudiced against me for it. How cold anyone blame them! Yet I was not the only one in the wrong. Her queer silence about all her own affairs this spring - which hurt Ruth and me so much. She explained by saying our attitude. August 23 1904. .But ever with such a happy day my mind is far from happy tonight. The same old suspense. The heart still pains the wound doesn't heal. If it weren't for Ruth I would pick up everything I possess and go home. In such an atmosphere I cannot live. Mother referred to Anna tonight. I say nothing and try to keep her from knowing how I feel at heart. Taken together the diary stands as a rare early expression of female same-sex affection jealousy and emotional education within an elite womens college. Of special research value to scholars of Gender and Queer Studies womens higher education and the history of emotion it captures the interior life of a woman learning both to feel and to contain feeling in Edwardian America. The book is nearly full written in a page-a-day 1904 datebook measuring approx. 6.25 × 4 inches its pages densely covered in tight legible script. Only a few days are left blank and the book is about 90% complete. Two pressed four-leaf clovers remain between the pages dated May 25 1904 which Ethel noted as symbols of the day of good luck. Bound in maroon leather with gilt edges the volume is well preserved spine sound writing crisp. Overall VG condition. BIO NOTES: Ethel Almira Morse 18821966 was born in South Natick Massachusetts to Herbert Leonard Morse 18551930 a teacher and Sarah Adeline Jones 18571936. She was educated at the Girls Latin School in Boston Class of 1900 and entered Wellesley College Class of 1905. Afterward she attended a commercial school in Boston and later taught in the commercial department of the Salem Normal School Boston Evening Transcript Sept 5 1912. In 1916 she married Lyndon Blaine Tewksbury 18781947 a Yale graduate and salesman; they lived in Boston and had three children: Lyndon Jr. Frances and Hamilton. She died in 1966.
