On offer is an original diary handwritten by Miss Ethel Dyson during over 39 pages her trips to Italy April 4 1913 - April 25 1913 and her trip to Belgium The Rhine and Switzerland August 9 1913 - August 30 1913 with her mother and father Edwin. There are 2 Thomas Cook and Son itineraries covering the 2 different trips. Miss Dyson is a rather charming diarist but can be pointed as she notes - 'It took a long while passing thro the Customs House where the officials are very excitable and stupid'. She also states there is a Lady Spencer in the party although the passenger list only refers to a Mrs. Spencer. Overall this is a rather lovely travel diary of two fast paced tours of targeted European locations by a charming detailed writer. Sensational 1899-1903 Belle Époque collection of two scrapbooks and one handwritten personal diary by a young singer named Ethel Fiske who studied under some of the greatest vocal instructors of her time. Fiske was the daughter of Harvard professor and author Dr. John Fiske. She lived on Brattle Street in Cambridge Massachusetts and was 27 years old when she began writing the diary. Sensational 1899-1903 collection of two scrapbooks and one handwritten personal diary by a young singer named Ethel Fiske who studied under some of the greatest vocal instructors of her time. Fiske was the daughter of Harvard professor and author Dr. John Fiske. She lived on Brattle Street in Cambridge Massachusetts and was 27 years old when she began writing the diary. Fiske’s entire diary is concerned with her voice lessons in the United States and in Paris. She records what happens in her lessons names the songs that she sings and comments on and critiques her music teachers. When Fiske lived in Cambridge her teacher was Mademoiselle Avigliana a Dramatic Soprano who had once worked at Covent Garden and the Royal Italian Opera. There are several long letters from Avigliana to Fiske included in the diary. The following are excerpts taken from Fiske’s dairy: “I took a lesson. I sang all the lessons through. …Mlle gave us a new arpeggio several notes longer than the second one . Then I sang ‘Thou That Tellest. ’ She said ‘this is a good lesson’” February 22 1899. “I sang to Miss Willis and Mr. Frank Lee in Nichewaug music room without accompaniment. Mr. Lee said ‘it was delicious’” September 7 1900. In October 1900 at age 28 Fiske travels to France with her friend Francis Ames where Fiske along with a successful young student named Miss Dodge becomes the student of Paul Marcel. Fiske hopes to become a singing sensation and her diary is full of the compliments and words of praise that she garners. Her father dies and she returns to the United States for several weeks. She then returns to France to become the student of famous German mezzo-soprano Mathilde Marchesi at her school on Rue Jouffroy. There are two original handwritten letters from Marchesi tucked into the dairy. Fiske does not explain why she left the tutelage of Marcel. Marchesi is known today as the teacher of a significant number of great singers including Nellie Melba Emma Calvé and Frances Alda. One entry indicates that by 1903 Fiske had established her own salon: “I sang in my salon to Mr. & Mrs Hallett. Sallia played for us ‘L’Eselave’. . Mrs Hallett said my voice was ‘magnificent’ October 29 1903. Tipped in or laid in the diary are seven music programs eleven original handwritten letters nine news clippings seven original photographs including two of Ms. Ames and six miscellaneous pieces of ephemera. The diary ends somewhat abruptly. There is a short section dated 1904 which indicates that Fiske is still in France and has a salon at which she sings for very small audiences. Fiske’s scrapbooks contain extensive clippings of opera and theater performances in Paris during the 1902 1903 and 1904 seasons. The covers of both scrapbooks have separated from the binding but all pages are intact. Included are numerous playbills and magazine clippings regarding shows and actresses. Fiske has recorded the dates of every performance she attended as well as many of the restaurants she dined in she includes names or initials of her theater and dinner companions. The newspaper clippings and theater programs are in excellent condition. Examples of items preserved include detailed restaurant bills calling cards invitations and personal notes and letters. There are several news articles about a famous criminal fraud case involving the notorious Therese Humbert as well as photographs of various theater stars including Sarah Bernhardt. There is also a 1902 map of the Paris Metro. Fiske’s scrapbooks offer a comprehensive look at the cultural and theatrical life in Paris over a century ago. ‎1934 - 1938 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A TEENAGE NEBRASKA GIRL TRYING TO NAVIGATE THE TRICKY WATERS OF BOYS AND DATING AND A THOUSAND OTHER MATTERS‎

‎Nebraska U.S. Good. 1934. On offer is an excellent 5 year diary simply chock full of the details and minutae of a young girl growing up in the 1930's in mid-western America. The diary is a leather-bound volume measuring 5 1/2 inches by 4 1/2 inches. It contains 365 pages plus memoranda pages and covers the years 1934 through 1938. It is essentially 100% complete. The cover is in good condition and the pages are all intact. The handwriting is legible. Etta May Hale was born in 1920 and this diary records her teenage years from the time she is 13 until she is 17/18. She grew up in the Great Depression and Nebraska was hard hit in that economic catastrophe. Etta May married and moved at some point to Denver CO where as Etta May Russell she passed away in 1995 at 74 years of age. It would be tempting to suggest that she married one of the boys she mentions in the book Jean Russell but obituary records indicate that he married someone else and never left his hometown of Weston MO. From her entries it's clear that her family was not affect to any great extent. While no details are provided there are passing references to her father and his office. "Dad moved the office downstairs in the Memorial Building . The room sure is large" Feb 28 1934 "Sis has been working at the office" Feb 2 1934. As well money was simply not in short supply. It seems from context that she clearly comes from a very comfortable middle class family. There are many descriptions of purchasing trips for example a bedroom suite in Omaha about 100 miles away clothing such as a new suit and tickets to many plays and movies. The list is long: new "swagger" suits a bedroom suite casual and formal dresses white string dress red sport suit darling green taffeta formal hats and shoes pretty pair with brown leather heels white canvas brown kid and suede winter shoes prom shoes brown school oxfords cute white Swing strap pair black suede shoes silver sandals black oxfords and even a fur coat in 1937. There are periodic references to cleaning the house but nothing more detailed than that. She seems to do well at school being exempted at times from exams. The vocabulary and diction used in her entries indicates that she would be likely a good student. As one might expect from someone her age her diary is filled with the innumerable goings-on of a busy teenagers life. Many of her entries deal with her social life especially with boys. As with many young people their social life especially with the opposite sex is paramount. She is continually discussing this boy or that boy and navigating the tricky waters of dating - fairly successfully. She participates in activities with 2 Masonic youth organizations - Job's Daughters and De Molay which suggests her father is a Mason. Her social life is very active - dances movies plays meeting friends - its a constant whirl. The real value in this diary though is her meticulous recording of details such as movies seen items purchased. For example: 1933 Tugboat Annie Papa Loves Mama Peg O' My Heart The Strangers Return Three Cornered Moon.1934 The Kid from Spain I Loved a Woman Mr. Skitch Lady Killer Havana Widows Bitter Sweets Frontier Marshal Dinner at Eight S.O.S. Iceberg Jennie Gerhard are just a few of the over 250 movies mentioned in her diary. This alone indicates that money is not a concern for Etta. Many locations are noted as the family has sufficient money to travel around visiting sites and dining out. Places mentioned include Marshall's the great department store in Chicago the Chicago World Fair President Ulysses S. Grant's home in Galena IL many visits to Omaha among some three dozen places mentions. In what has to make this diary a goldmine for local historians and genealogists she records full names of people she knows and with whom she interacts. For example: Carroll Boyd Jean Russell Benner Jane Porter Billie Scott Elmer Gregory & wife Lulu Luke Gregory Frank & Arline Marqua Vera Fleming Gertrude Roberts Anna Keohane Jack Kyle Helen Jean Porter Mildred Kotas Ruth Dunesing Kathleen Beard Betty Aldrich Clarice Hutchison Marguerite Adams Mary Bitterbush Sara Frances Turner Marion Boyd Mary Virginia Brockway Bill Boyd Roberta Roberts Grace Anderson Ethel Tignor Richard Haff George Craig Dwight West Dorothy Smith Beverly Sidylitz Kathryn/Kate Faunce Dorothy Pooley Ellsworth Hall Merrill Rosenberger Harold Neimann Bud Cowles James Chapin Lois Hail Winston King Mary Jane Davisson are just some of the over 100 individuals by their first and last name. Thus this diary becomes a powerful cross-referencing tool. A social historian would appreciate the day-to-day detail she records of the comings and goings of her and her friends.
