1932 THROUGH 1999 ORIGINAL SPORADIC MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY AN AMERICAN NURSE WHO FINDS HER WAY FROM NEW YORK TO ALASKA TO MASSACHUSETTS AND BACK TO ALASKA AND BEYOND
ALASKA UNITED STATES. Good. 1932. On offer is a fascinating and unusual diary with entries covering decades in the life of an American nurse. It is the nature of these entries that gives so much value to this diary. The diary is hardcover and the cover is in reasonable condition with wear on the spine. It is a five-year diary with pages formatted for 5 entries per page. Measuring 7.75 inches by 5.5 inches it contains 365 pages and is approximately 15% complete. Natalie Franz Hewlett was born in 1907. She grew up in Stockbridge Massachusetts. She was 25 years old and living in New York City with her husband Arthur when she began her diary. They had one daughter Anna. Hewlett passed away in Juneau AK in 2004 at the age of 97. Although the diary is a five-year format she ignores the printed format when it suits her. For example her entry for Nov 3rd 1932 takes the entire page. In another departure she does not follow the dated format of the pages either: i.e. the aforementioned Nov 3rd entry is written on the page marked for January 5th. There are also huge time gaps in her entries. They range from 1932 to 1999. They are in no particular order. Where the value lies is in the snapshots they provide of her life over nearly three quarters of a century. For this perspective it is easy to overlook her unconventional use of the diary. The first seven pages of the diary contain entries for Jan 1 Sept 18 Oct 17 & 18 Nov 4 8 and 16 and December 25. The next few pages have their dates crossed out and instead an entry for November 8th 1936 is written which sums up the previous few years: "I hadn't realized how long it was since I last wrote in this book - so much has happened Notable events are - Nov. 1934 we had a fire in my dressing room - we lost all our clothes but everyone was so nice and I think we were better off than before . April 1935 lost a seven months baby boy I suppose I was lucky to escape with so little trouble. Of course we were disappointed as we have been married for five years" Nov 8 1936. In the same passage she notes that Arthur has started a business - Long Island Canine Catering a business that struggles. However she also notes: ". On this Nov 4 1936 we celebrated our sixth wedding anniversary. We went to town N.Y to dinner and then saw Helen Hayes in Victoria Regina. It is an excellent play and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Being married for six years" Nov 8 1936. In a couple of entries she makes her political beliefs plainly understood in the election contest between Herbert Hoover and Franklin D Roosevelt: "Election Day - Hoover & Roosevelt - Roosevelt won much to my disgust - Hoover has done so much for this country and seems honest which is more than you can say for most political men" Nov 8 1932. On Nov 4th was election day. Roosevelt vs Alfred Landon Governor of Kansas - As we were against Roosevelt and his reckless spending we were very disappointed when Roosevelt was re-elected by a sweeping majority Nov 4 1936. Trained as a nurse at St. Like's Hospital New York during World War II she worked as a nurse's aide for the Red Cross. Encouraged by friends who served as missionaries in Alaska and inspired after hearing Episcopal Bishop Peter Rowe speak of his experience the Hewletts decided to move to Alaska in the late 1940s. They settled first in Anchorage later moving to Homer where her nursing skills were invaluable. She delivered many babies. Her husband started the first Bank of Homer in their basement and customers often had to walk through the family laundry drying on the line to do business. Her husband died in 1953 and she eventually sold the bank and returned to Anchorage. This was a significant move for them as they were leaving all their family and social acquaintances behind. There is also a reference to the antisemitism that pervaded life in mid-century America. "We are selling all our household in preparation to go to Alaska to try our fortune there. We have felt that if we haven't made much progress here and living is so expensive that possibly Alaska will open up new business. . Too we would like to offer Nancy our precious daughter broader fields in culture which is definitely not here . I have no regrets about the house but I do mine very much selling some of our nice furniture to Jews.
" Oct 12 1945. She and her husband built a life for themselves in Alaska with Arthur passing away there in 1953. She returned to Massachusetts for 15 years but eventually moved back to Alaska. Her diary entries are sporadic over those years mostly recounting the daily events of her life: "Sun. Rain - Went to museum at 11am very busy - don't know where everyone came from. Called Carol Hand in Greenwich N.Y. as A.A. died of cancer. Remember him so well when he was little. Then went to Tracy Ann's house - It was beautiful" July 24 1988. "Fri. Cloudy - Paid my I.R.S. quarterly - Can't believe I owe so much $695.00 - Went to Hannah Daniels house - Walked - Foodland - I was so exhausted and ached so by the time I reached Park Shore - It's not for either - Scares me how my legs are so bad - Poured rain P.M ."Sept 15 1990. All-in-all this is a wonderful series of 'verbal snapshots' of a woman's long life in 20th century America. She often references people by their full names which can make this a valuable genealogical reference. Yuan a Chinese refugee in the years immediately following the rise of Mao Zedong and culminating in the Great Leap Forward an economic and social plan initiated by the Communist Party of China in 1958 to increase the economic prosperity of the country which resulted in tens of millions of Chinese citizens starving to death.<br /><br />Yuan was a civil servant who worked as a customs librarian in Shanghai when the Communist Party took over. Yuan eventually escaped to Taiwan where he worked as Librarian of the Customs Reference Library and later as a Senior Expert in the Ministry of Finance of Taiwan. <br /><br />His manuscript is dated 1958. However he notes that it was serialized in 1952 possibly as newspaper articles. The manuscript is titled "The Tale of a Chinese Refugee." It is unclear whether this manuscript was ever published in book form. Yuan did later publish a book entitled <i>Crossing the Rubicon: The Story of a Chinese Refugee Family</i> in 1980 which may be based in whole or in part on this manuscript. <br /><br />In the preface of this manuscript Yuan opens with: "This is a story of my life after the arrival of the Communists in Shanghai and of my struggle to rejoin the Government of China on Taiwan. It was originally written and published in 1952 as espisodes sic for readers in Taiwan. These separate articles are now rewritten into a complete story for presentation to our American friends as a human document and an indictment against Communism and also an admonition to the peoples in uncommitted countries and in the so-called 'neutral' countries." <br /><br />He goes on to say: "Written almost five years ago my observations on the Chinese Communists as I saw them with my own eyes have been proven by independent reports of mainland conditions that the free world has since then received. He was dressed in a threadbare suit without any marks or decorations with bare feet in cotton shoes. His worldly belongings were worth less than US$1.00 but this was the man who did more than anyone else to wreck a Service that had claimed world renown for nearly a century . . . When freedom was lost living ended and mere existence began. I also learned that freedom was not completely lost until one was denied knowledge of its existence or disabled to protest against its loss or fight for its recovery." <br /><br />The manuscript measures 8.5 inches by 11 inches. It consists of 163 single-sided typed onion-skin pages. The pages are bound with a string and the cover page is detached. Other than some chipping and wear marks on the edges the pages are in good condition. <br /><br />This is an impressive well-written document by an intelligent and thoughtful man. It provides a valuable detailed first-hand account of the harrowing experiences Yuan endured in his quest for freedom from the People's Republic of China. 1914 - 1916 SUPERB ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT REGIMENTAL RAMC DIARY AND SIGNIFICANT RECORD OF THE 6 DIVISION BRITISH ARMY MEDICAL CORPS' 17 MONTH DAY TO DAY GRIND AT THE FRONT HANDWRITTEN BY AN ENGLISH MAJOR WHO WOULD GO ON THE AUTHOR BOOKS ON HIS SERVICE
BRITAIN. Good. 1914. On offer is a simply outstanding first hand record of life on the front lines of WWI. All units in the British Army were required after 1907 to keep a Unit war diary. This is not a personal record but rather a unit record of information such as orders movements location activities casualties etc which can be used later for training purposes and as a starting point for a review of tactics - successful and otherwise. It also serves to to create a detailed historical record of each Unit for archival purposes. British Army Units have kept these from 1907 right up to the present day. The physical format is standardized. Inside a heavy card stock cover the loose leaf pages are secured with a metal clip. The faded letters of his name Unit RAMC and 6 Div can be read. Each page has a duplicate page that records a carbon copy. When turned in the original 'top' page of each page goes in the case of the British Army to the National Archives. The carbon copy usually stays with the Unit and goes into the Unit's archives. This War Diary was kept by Major Nathaniel John Rutherford a Major with the Royal Army Medical Corps attached to 6 Division British Army. Apparently instead of turning it in he retained it. It measures approximately 14 inches by 8 1/2 inches and its layout is landscape. There are approximately 260 pages - 200 detailing Unit activities and 60 blank. The Diary is in surprisingly good condition considering it was hauled through some of the most ferocious battles in WWI. It covers the time period from October 2nd 1914 when the Division took up positions at Serches France until March 7 1916 when Major Rutherford was transferred out. The Division was mobilized in Cork Ireland August 4th 1914 and within 11 days was embarked to England. After three weeks training they arrived in France. Almost immediately they were moved to the front and in the Battle of Aisne suffered 1482 casualties. Day by day line by line in some 3000 lines of detailed entries Rutherford records what is happening: "Arrived ADMS 3 rd Corps to arrange for encampment of medical officers" Oct 4 1914; " Sick and wounded evacuated to base" Oct 4 1914. Between Oct 13th and 19th the Division fought in the First Battle of Ypres suffering 4696 casualties. In his notes Rutherford records no new cases of Scarlet fever Oct 15th 1914. On the 6th of June 1915 the Division was back at Ypres where they suffered 10 938 casualties including victims of gas attacks. Rutherford refers directly to this: "Visited Fld Amb. 2 nd Army has reported through 6 Div that complete motor ambulance outfit arrives ABBEVILLE this evening. Informed Hd qtrs I want convoy at L' EBE FME and will distribute from there. Small party of chemical experts arrive at 18 Fld Amb tomorrow and will be attached to Infantry Bas for information of men in use of respirators ." June 6 1915. In the 'Remarks' column he records day by day the casualties: "Aug 12 1915 Casualties: Officers 7 4 wounded; OR Other Ranks 149 116 wounded Aug 13 1915 Casualties: Officers 5 2 wounded OR - 89 wounded 35 Aug 14 1915 Casualties: Officers 4 OR 124 wounded 69 Aug 21 1915 Casualties: Officers 1 wounded OR 66 64 sick 3365 Broughton 2/London Rgt TYPHOID FEVER". In the 17 months that Major Rutherford serves on the Western Front he is continually visiting frontline trenches field aid stations and field ambulance units. He is routinely under fire. As can be seen from the Aug 21 entry above in addition to the horrible wounds caused by combat he has to deal with outbreaks of very serious diseases. Untold hours of his time is taken with dealing with the logistics of a medical unit in the field - continual supply of dressing medicines water and chemicals to deal with the deadly gas attacks. His last entry is Mar 7th 1916: ". asked XIV Corp to request if army to delay my departure a few days 2/Army replies that I must proceed quickly". The War Diary does not record where he was transferred but informal research suggests it was to the Greek theatre of war. Nathanel John Crawford Rutherford 1874-1960 was a grandfather of Mike Rutherford a founding member and bass guitarist of Genesis band. He served as a doctor at the RAMS for over three decades and published two books about his war experiences - Soldiering With A Stethoscope an account about of work in a field hospital during Boer War and the First World War and Memories of an Army Surgeon. This is a rare and very valuable find. It is an unfiltered first-hand account of fighting at the front day in and day out for 17 months. The pamphlet is in Good condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The pamphlet cover has some light rippling edge wear and small nicks. The covers have noticeable generalized toning. The text pages are generally clean and bright and also have generalized toning. There is an ink stamped price on the front cover. " Ruth McGinnis stated playing pool at the aged 7 in her father's barbershop pool hall on South Main Street in Honesdale Pennsylvania. She was a prodigious player at a young age making a run of 47 at the age of about 10. She was the captain of the varsity basketball team that won the Pennsylvania state championship in 1928. McGinnis scored 36 points in one game and 341 across the 15 games in the series. In 1943 she completed training as a physical education teacher at Teachers' College. Whilst at Stroudsburg she participated in a number of sports including soccer golf softball and field hockey. She also served as a lifeguard and is said to have saved a man from drowning. McGinnis found it difficult to secure a teaching post after leaving Stroudsburg and joined a programme called "Better Billiards" organised by the National Billiards Council of America which sponsored McGinnis to visit pool halls and promote pool. The visits usually involved her giving a short talk demonstrating some trick shots and playing against representatives of the venue.
