1941-1942 Original Handwritten Diary Recording the Life of a Rural Michigan Woman in Her 60s As the United States Joins the Second World War
On offer is the 1941 to 1942 diary of 64-year-old Michigan resident Flora Coyne. This interesting notebook chronicles one woman's experiences in rural America during World War Two and includes an entry on the day Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. <br /><br />Coyne was born in 1876 and lived her life in rural Michigan. She passed away in 1947 at the age of 70. Her husband Patrick had passed away in 1936 five years before she wrote this diary. She had one son Basil. <br /><br />Coyne does not follow the dated entries in this diary but records her days using whatever space she requires. Her entries detail the daily comings and goings of her family and circle of friends. <br /><br />"Charley Mauley Basil & I drove to Harrison Mich to Conservation sale of land. E 1/4 of NW 1/4 of Sec 5-18-6 of Freeman Twp 83& 92/100 acres. All this time there was lots of snow in Clare Co. We got back to L George had dinner and Mauley left for Bannister" January 24 1941. "Got electric pump from Mr. Luce. New $34.95. Did usual work" July 24 1941. <br /><br />"Nice bright day. Cleaned up house. Baked cookies. Every one of deer hunters class was out in the woods. Bernard came about 7 PM. He came alone -- told us Mary was going home to . Mr. Dodge and Miller called in evening. Came up to Jeffrey's cottage to hunt deer. Told us about Peanut being so sick" November 15 1941. <br /><br />". Basil left for Pontiac. Shortly after they left we heard the news over the radio that Japan had attacked our islands of Hawaii and bombed Honolulu & Pearl Harbor killing many soldiers and wounding many others. As day advanced to nite more news of attacks on Pacific Islands and Philippines Islands also. In Washington our capital plans were being made to declare war on the Empire of Japan by Congress and our President Roosevelt" December 7 1941. <br /><br />This 5-year diary measures 5 inches by 4 inches and contains 365 pages. The covers are in fair condition showing some wear and weathering. The strap on the clasp is broken. The spine has broken but the covers remain attached as do all of the pages. The pages themselves are in good condition and the handwriting is legible. The diary spans from January 1941 to August 1942. Coyne did not write every day. <br /><br />This diary presents a straightforward account of daily life in rural Michigan as the United States enters into World War Two. The descriptions paint a clear picture of her daily routines and the names mentioned can serve as a cross-reference for genealogical research in Michigan. For a researcher in women's studies this book offers a good illustration of the social role that formed the experience of many women prior to WWII. hardcover

1900 CHARMING ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A WEST CENTRAL INDIANA WOMAN AT THE TURN OF THE CENTURY
LAFAYETTE INDIANA. Good. 1900. On offer is an interesting small diary/memo book written between Oct 1st 1900 and Feb 19th by Flora G Schilling an Indiana student. The memo book measures about 5 1/2 in by 2 3/4 in and was a promotional item put out by "Bert A. Drees Pharmacist" of Lafayette IN. With 30 pages it is in very good condition and 100% complete. The handwriting is quite legible. The heading of the first page note Class of 01 which would seem to confirm her status as a student. References on page 3 indicate that Schilling and her friends attended the annual Fall Carnival. The entries are sporadic in nature and some are undated. A notable entry in this little journal was: "Roosevelt came to the city. watching the Rough rider on Main Street." Oct 10 1900. This is a reference to the 1900 US Presidential election campaign where Theodore Roosevelt's was running as Vice-Presidential candidate. Most entries are of a chatty nature: "Frank and I went to dancing school Had a royal time" p10. "Preparing for examination in Astronomy." Dec 12 1900 "E. S. & I bidding V goodbye. Went downtown to to sample candy" pp15-16. "Sister M was in the room and had to study oh so hard I went to dance Monday night and had a swell time." Jan 7 1901. An interesting little notebook with an important historical reference - Wm. 1933 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT RELIC OF DEPRESSION ERA TENNESSEE AND A SADLY TYPICAL LOOK AT THE LIFE AND TIMES AND RACE RELATIONS OF THE DAY
SPRINGFIELD BARREN PLAINS TENNESSEE. Good. 1933. On offer is a very interesting manuscript diary handwritten by Florence E. Hughes who lived in or near Springfield Tennessee in 1933. We believe Florence was an African American woman though this is not stated categorically in the book there seems little doubt given the clues some activities etc. Florence was born on July 4th 1867. She married Walter S. Hughes in 1890 and had three children with rather interesting names; Golden R. Pearl M. and Jewel A. She talks of "traveling" to Springfield and living closer to Barren Plains which she writes about it as if it were home. Prolific but rather illiterate Florence details life and quite a few deaths from the area talks of barn dances tobacco growing shows coming into town a "Negro" trial that was held on their front lawn and much more for a full diary. Her husband was a blacksmith by trade and Florence designed several gravestones for her family and some local folks providing a very broad knowledge base of doings in the town. Here are some snippets: 1933 "January 1st Mary Olive Highsmith Jones will have her funeral at the Baptist Church here today. She died at her home in Murfreesboro Tenn. on Friday and brought here to her mother and father's Mr. and Mrs. P.M. Highsmith on Saturday and kept her there until today. Buried her in Springfield. A large crowd attended church. I was sick in bed and could not go so I was so sorry. Great deal of sickness here this winter." "January 3rd I am up today but not well. Mr. Morris is clearing the old brick house. Is moving everything he has today at the new house near Mt. Penson Church. We have lost a real neighbor and friend. Floral Park wishes them the best of wishes. Hope to have them come back. I mailed Ruby a pk this morning. I received a new year book from her. Mr. Clinard is moving to the Sommer's house today. I have been up all day. Charley Johnson was arrested this morning and carried to jail selling whiskey." "January 11th V. Strange and wife are moving near Guthrie Ky today. Sure wish them well and like to have them back some day. 3 o'clock still raining. I made a design for Bro Zoa and sister Ida's grave. Will carry them to the cemetery soon. 1930s Multi-Year Interwar Diary of a Middle Class Jewish New Yorker Age 16 Untouched by the Great Depression and Unaware of the Inequities of the Time
New York City Interwar NY: Interwar Years Great Depression New York City Teen. Good. 1930s. Hardcover. On offer is a well-kept Jewish middle class teenage girl's five-year diary from the 1930's in New York City. The author of the diary is Florence Heller. She lives in New York City and context suggests that she is 16 years of age when she begins it. Our informal research has not found any other additional biographical information about her. The diary covers the years 1933 and 1934 with several more entries scattered of the following 3 years. Her family is Jewish and as owners of a shop occupy a middle class position in the community. There are no references to the widespread economic woes of the Great Depression and her life seems insulated from its ravages. As you would expect it is chock full of the events and names of individuals that made up her busy adolescent life. "My birthday - terrible time - went shopping for a party - bought nothing. Sam Gottlieb called - had a good laugh" Jan 2 1933; "Got a call from Benny - he's bringing a friend along for Yetta - hope its someone nice . Yetta slept over. Benny brought Hal much to my disappointment - Benny is just about crazy over me - Saw Irving while walking with Benny - was a bad girl because I kissed too much" Feb 24 1933; "I wonder if I should go with Perry. I'll ask Lillie what to do"June 24 1933; "Yetta told me she met a nice fellow in nite school - I ought to go too - maybe I'll meet a nice fellow ." Oct 23 1933; "Closed store - Bob came in - said he didn't write because he was ill - I don't particularly care for Bob - We're going out tomorrow with Charlie and a girl" Jan 13 1934. The simple reference to the family having a 'colored girl' to do housekeeping hints at the racial and economic divisions in their society: "Francis the colored girl didn't come so I had to clean put on curtains & change bedding. After shower we had seder" Mar 30 1934. For a researcher into Women's Studies or a social historian this is an excellent window into the world of teenage girls during the inter-war years. The attitudes hinted at in this diary point to the type of traditional roles for women that would be steadily altered over her lifetime. Chautauqua Fredonia New York. Good with no dust jacket. 1911. Softcover. On offer is the sweet-as-pie diary of a bright and lovely young teenager the baby of her large family growing up on a farm in Chautauqua County New York in the early 20th century. Florence Lettie Slaght later Van Scoter 1897-1990 was the youngest of five daughters born to Charles S. Slaght 1854-1924. And Nellie Dewey 1862-1916. Charles worked as a tin-smith and the family resided in Fredonia Chautauqua County New York. In 1921 Florence married Walter David Van Scoter 1896-1974. Walter was a farmer and Florence worked as a school teacher in Fredonia. Florence keeps her diary during the 8th and 9th grades when she is 13 to 14 years old. She is a hardworking high-achieving student whose hobbies are limited by the amount of time she spends working on the family farm spending time with her family and working hard to achieve exceptional grades at school she records her grades in the memoranda section of her diary and she is an A student almost across the board. Florence is very close with her family. She writes frequently about her sisters whereabouts and activities. Her sisters are Mabel 1880-1956 Lola Etta 1884-1969 Alice Edna 1893-1976. She did have another older sister Alice Bula 1881-1890 who died well before she was born. Florences tidy writing descriptive daily entries make her seem older than her years. She notes highlights of her daily life in the Memoranda section of her diary providing some context to her daily entries. Some excerpts give the flavour of her writing: .Got up late and did a little sewing. Made a bag for my gym shoes. Mrs. Johnson Gustie Helen K and James were here to-night. Played pit. Had a sore throat when I went to bed Jan 7 1911. .Sore throat is much better. Did not go to church nor S. S. & Mable and Edna went. Mables birthday to-day. She is 31 years old. We gave her 1 dozen plates. I wrote to Lola
terrible wind tonight Jan 8 1911. Went to school. Gave a poem in assembly. Went for a walk in cemetery with Dorris Newjunes grandmother buried today. Mother very sick. Had Doctor Dodds. Dorris called in evening. Gustie called. Studied in evening April 3 1911. Stayed at home nearly all day. Stayed in store while Mabel washed. James went to Little Valley on early train. Very hot. I went to the Y. W. C. A. Social at the guild house. Had a grand time. Very busy July 3 1911. Froze ice cream with Father early. Are all going to Bear Lake. Edna still at Lolas. Madison Georgia. Good with no dust jacket. 1969. Hardcover. On offer is a 1969-1970 American diary from 71-year-old Florida Lamar Poullain Campbell Prior of Madison Georgia. Prior was the descendant of the Poullain and Lamar families who have called Georgia home since the early 1700s. Prior was born in Madison in 1898 and lived her life in that community. She married Walter Truman Prior and had a daughter named Florida C. Prior Jr. Prior passed away in 1991 at the age of 93. Although her name is not inscribed on the book context and the individuals named in her entries point to Priors identity. This diary was printed in 1925 but entries were sporadically made between 1969 and 1970. Prior's writing paints a detailed picture of life in the American South at this time. Personal relationships were very important to Prior and her entries are replete with references to family and friends. She also describes the social events that she participates in and the simple pleasures she experiences in her daily life. "Roy M. Prior passed away around 6: 00 AM. Today. He was my sweet and true friend. We will miss him. Ruth has stayed with us some during his illness and Flo & I have enjoyed being with her" April 11. "Today Florida C Prior Jr & Myself watched astronauts Neil Armstrong & Edwin Aldrin Jr. Walk on the moon & heard Pres. Nixon talk to them from Washington and heard their reply to him. UNBELIEVABLE" July 20. "Claire Stovall Inez W. Kroger Georgia Mallory Marguerite Little Helen de Beaugrine Fanny Harris & Ruth Attaway had lunch with me at Ye Olde Colonial Restaurant. We missed Martha Rhoades & Sara Knight who could not be with us. I enjoyed these sweet friends" July 25. "Mell Burgess Paine invited Flo & I to come to Decater for the day & to go to new S. DeKalb Richs. We took morning train for Atlanta -- first time I have been on this train in over 45 years. It was a great experience" August 20. "Elizabeth Cochran Prior & Roy Prior were married this afternoon at the Apalachee Baptist Church. Martha & Paul Rhoades went with Flo & me. It was very sweet" November 8. This small diary offers an interesting grouping of family and friendship links that can flesh out genealogical lines in this historic community and county in Georgia. 1889 ORIGINAL CHARMING MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A YOUNG BRITISH TEENAGER LIVING IN SWITZERLAND
LAUSANNE SWITZERLAND. Good. 1889. On offer is a small original and charming manuscript relic of one young British teenage girl named Florrie who travels to Switzerland in 1889. The book a birthday gift from Dudley her brother perhaps was received on January 28 1889. She began using it immediately and wrote in it every day until July 1st when entries come to a sudden end. Florrie writes about her day to day life: social visits tasks around the house lessons attending Church and Bible Class etc. The family may have been of Scottish descent as she regularly mentions the Scotch Church. She spends time with friends and family all of whom are named. Amusingly the person she spends most time with they see each other almost daily is only referred to as 'German girl.' Florrie wrote most of the diary in pencil and her writing requires patience due to the small size and Florrie's rather untidy writing but all entries can be made out. The 2½ x 3¼ inch book has gold silk covered boards and spine with floral decoration decorative gilt patterned endpapers pencil holder complete with original bone tipped pencil. Gilt to all page edges. Small label for stationers in Lausanne. 1923 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF A HARDWORKING UPSTATE NEW YORK FARMER WHO DETAILS THE POST WORLD WAR I RURAL LIFE OF A DAIRYMAN
HALIESBORO GOUVERNEUR ST LAWRENCE COUNTY NY. Very Good. 1923. Hardcover. On offer is an interesting post World War I 1923 manuscript relic of rural living and commerce in upstate New York being the handwritten diary of farmer Floyd F. Bigarel of Gouverneur New York St. Lawrence County. Floyd does not identify himself in the book but ephemera contained all bear his name and he celebrates his birth as census records find that he was born March 20th 1890 d. November 1971 thusly 33 years old at the writing and confirming ownership. Floyd does a good job detailing his life: he never fails to note the weather conditions his jobs for the day his personal entertainments visits personal appointments to Church or to the Hailesboro Democrat League meetings etc. etc. Sometimes however he leaves a very enigmatic note: "Stayed home today for a wonder." Researchers and historians will be happy with the details of his economy and commerce as he specifies the price of daily purchases whether expenses to the farm or a 10 cent loaf of bread for himself. He also fully names his contacts and friends and notes passings and news: "Viola Hall Farmer died today of Tuberculosis aged 37". It appears to be a busy dairy farm but of course he does much more; harvesting ice sells drinking water from well washing heffers cutting and hauling lumber having a wolf tooth removed from two horses using a milking machine for the first time and much much more. Identified as part of Father Tuck's "Little Darling" Series on the front cover. Raphael Tuck also issued this as part of several other series. "No. 1558" on cover. Printed on linen; first and last leaves pasted down on covers. A charming story based on the nursery rhyme about the three little kittens who lost their mittens. In Good Condition: edges are rubbed; cover is creased; back cover is stained; pages are somewhat soiled; color illustrations have left shadows on facing pages; minimal fraying to linen edges.
