1883 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT BOOK OF THEOLOGY THEOSOPHY PHILOSOPHY AND ESOTERICA HANDWRITTEN BY AN UNKNOWN RECHABITE
NOT IDENTIFIED. Fair. 1883. On offer is a most unusual and unique volume dating from late 19th century England. It measures about 4.5 inches by 3 inches. The volume contains 104 pages plus numerous Memoranda pages. The cover though worn is intact. The spine has broken and the binding is loose. However all pages are intact. Written in English Greek and Hebrew the handwriting is clear and legible. Some letters and words are written in a very decorative manner and an 'Engraver' style of font is used in many places. The author of the volume is unknown. There is a reference much later in the book to a William Green but no connection to the book can be clearly drawn. The book is a printed diary for the year 1884. It was printed in and used in England. However it was used more as a notebook to record prayers reflections and esoteric thoughts than as a daily diary. Entries are dated in 1884 and as late as 1895 without reference to the printed calendar pages in the book. "THOUGHTS Not a thought can I allow to disturb my peaceful brow! But should any such arise I'll conduct it to the Skies There to see that wondrous sight GOD the Everlasting Light" on Week 8. Some pages are written exclusively in Greek and others in Hebrew. One notation following a long entry in Greek reads: "Chemical elements with which on earth have been distinctly traced on the Sun"on Week 11. From context it seems that the writer is investigating aspects of astronomy as relates to his philosophic speculations: "line obtainable when placed at the focus of the telescope entirely hides the disc of the star" on Week 46. Another entry is an acrostic where in the first letter of each line spells out the title of the piece: "MRS TERNOUTH" Week 32. On Week 48 is written out a detailed Certificate of Candidate certifying that a 6 year old boy is healthy and a fit candidate for the Independent Order of Rechabites Tent# 2227. It is signed by a William Green. The Independent Order of Rechabites also known as the Salford Unity of Rechabites was a fraternal or 'friendly' organization founded in England in 1835. It was part of the overall growth of temperance societies that sprang up across England. It spread to Australia and the United States. It is still active today as The Rechabite Friendly Society as a mutual insurance company and financial services organization that specializes in ethical savings and investment products. Undoubtedly the Greek and Hebrew portions of the book would yield even more information. A student of the esoteric or researcher into esoteric philosophy or theosophy would find this an intriguing look into how these thoughts were developed and expressed. Considering that entries span a period of over 10 years this is a fairly consistent thought structure.; Manuscript; 32mo - over 4" - 5" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF; LATE 19TH CENTURY; 1880s; 1890s; PHILOSOPHY; THEOSOPHY; ESOTERIC WRITING; INTERNATIONAL ORDER OF RECHABITES; IOR; WILLIAM GREEN; SALFORD UNITY OF RECHABITES; 19TH CENTURY THOUGHT; HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS DIARY DIARIES JOURNALS PERSONAL HISTORY SOCIAL HISTORY HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUITÉ CONTRAT VÉLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGÜEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . unknown

1892 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY AN ALL AMERICAN TEENAGE BOY DETAILING HIS LIFE AND TIMES AND EVEN GREAT GRADES IN LATE 19th CENTURY CENTRAL MICHIGAN
FLUSHING MICHIGAN FLINT. Good. 1892. On offer is a very interesting diary from 1892 written by teenage boy living in rural America. The diary measures 5" by 3 1/2 inches and is very good condition. There are about 250 pages - 182 actual diary pages and 60 pages Memoranda Cash Accounts etc sections of the book. The diary portion is 100% complete and there are various entries in the Accounts and other memoranda sections Our writer remains unidentified throughout the diary. There is nothing specific enough to identify him. And it is a him - a 15 year old boy at the beginning of the year. He lived on a farm close to town. There are contextual clues that suggest this town is Flint MI as it is mentioned a number of times. He was religious in keeping his diary and through it we can see what life would be like for a mid-teens boy in rural/small town America just prior to the end of the 19th century. As can be expected there is a very predictable routine in his life. He attends school regularly 9th grade and obviously works had at his studies: ". I averaged 79 in Arithmetic 94 in Botany 87 in Grammar 90 in History 93 in Bookkeeping 95 in " June 17. He attends church virtually every Sunday and participates regularly in Sunday School. And through it all he does chores and enjoys the sorts of things a 16 yr old would enjoy. Here is a sampling of entries: "I attended school today. The 10th grade and Claude Ottaway and I of the 9th grade took our first lesson in Botany today. Will McPherson was to our house tonight selling stamps I bought one for $.01 I went skating after school tonight and after supper. ." Jan 5; "I attended school today . I went down town tonight after school and then came back and did my chores and went down to Gus' to supper. We all attended at our church tonight. I sang in the choir" Mar 1; "I went down town this morning and took a livery horse over to Holmes and Hattie to go to Flint with. Fred French rowed me across the river again. I attended school. I wrote a letter to Daisy this morning" June 1; "I cut weeds in the meadow this forenoon. This afternoon I cut weeds and brush. Frank Wilson and I robbed a bumble bee's nest. Mother wrote a letter in the meadow ." Aug 22; "I dug some on a well in the meadow. I got down to quicksand. Holmes and I dug this afternoon. Holmes bought the rocks for the well . Mrs. S. Baker was shot at" Aug3. Looking through the Accounts section one can get a real sense of the costs of everyday items. Here are some examples: "shoe repairs - 25 ¢ stamp - 1¢ hair cut 20¢ lead pencil 3¢ new shoes $3.30". A poignant entry is written in a child's hand on a blank Account page: "daddy died in 1932 He was 56 years old when he died Written by June 11 years old Born 1924". Through these entries a reader can get a glimpse of a lifestyle that is now long gone and has passed into the mythology of a 'golden age' for life in America. This would be an excellent resource for a social or economic historian especially of rural or small town America.; Manuscript; 32mo - over 4" - 5" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF; LATE 19TH CENTURY; GILDED AGE; BOYS GROWING UP IN RURAL AMERICA ALL AMERICAN BOYS PROGRESSIVE ERA; 1892 FLINT MI; FLUSHING MI; MICHIGAN; GENESEE COUNTY; GROWING UP IN THE 1890s LIFE IN RURAL AMERICA; AMERICAN TEENAGERS AT THE END OF THE 19TH CENTURY; YOUNG PEOPLE IN RURAL AMERICA; GROWING ON A FARM IN THE 19TH CENTURY; RURAL SCHOOLS IN 1890s; EDUCATION IN RURAL AMERICA; SCHOOL CHILDREN IN RURAL MICHIGAN YOUTH SOCIAL LIFE IN THE 1890s; ENTERTAINMENT IN RURAL AMERICA; LIFESTYLE OF THE 19TH CENTURY RURAL MICHIGAN; AMERICANA HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS DIARY DIARIES JOURNALS PERSONAL HISTORY SOCIAL HISTORY HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUITÉ CONTRAT VÉLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGÜEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . unknown

1908 - 1911 ORIGINAL CHATTY MANUSCRIPT DIARY HAND WRITTEN BY AN ERIE PENNSYLVANIA WOMAN WHO DOES A GREAT JOB DETAILING HER LIFE AND LOCAL EVENTS
ERIE PENNSYLVANIA. Fair. 1908. On offer is a chatty diary covering parts of 1908 1909 1910 and 1911. No one year is complete and entries often skip days or weeks. The front cover is missing and the back cover is only very loosely attached. The pages are sewn together. The righting is clear and legible. The writer lives in Erie PA an industrial manufacturing city that was a key link in the iron and steel industry on the Great Lakes. From context the writer appears to be a woman living with her husband and family. Her second entry notes the arrival of the 8 hour work day for telegraphers. The tone is chatty and entries include references to business personal and social life events: "The Erie strike has been declared settled and this is the day the old machinists were to return to work but none of them did. Dr. Burdette's class met tonight. Paul Huff has been taking treatment for increasing his speed in running a typewriter. This is Shrove Tues. Pancake social at Christ Church parish house this evening" Mar 3 1908. The entry for Saturday Nov 20th 1909 is typical of the talkative stream-of consciousness style of writing employed: "This was a fair day but not much sunshine. Didn't work this afternoon but Charlie and Lewie went back. In the afternoon I did a little varnishing work . using FW Devoe and Co's Oil Dark Oak Stain . the gasman came and read the meter .Esther went to the matinee of the Chicago Stock 'Genesee of the Hills' . Ma got a new hat today . we had cornmeal pancakes for supper . there were no turkeys on sale at the market . Dr. William H Crawford president of Allegheny College arrived from Europe this morning to straighten out the financial affairs of the College . Mr. Crawford will return to Rome in a short while to join his family who are spending the winter in that city . James Braggs was promoted from assistant baggagemaster to baggagemaster at the Erie station .the annual bazaar of Zion Church was held . mother and Mrs. Huff went to this sale and bought some german cookies ." Nov 20 1909. And so it goes. Factual event thoughts and gossip fill the pages: "The engagement of Theodore Roosevelt Jr. to Elinor Alexander of New York was announced several days ago. Mrs. Roosevelt has left for Africa with her daughter to meet her husband and return with him to the United States. ." Feb 15 1910. "Over half of the employees of the Pennsylvania Rapid Transit Co of that city have gone out on strike and several small riots occurred . " Feb 21. The entries end as abruptly as they began with an entry in July 1911: "Mrs Glancy made her usual appearance this morning. The price or cotton and cotton fabric has risen considerable of late and the reason is that a cotton trust has been originated" July 10 1911. A social historian would find this an interesting collection of facts and bits of corroborative information for life in this small Great Lakes industrial city in the years before WWI.; Manuscript; 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF ERIE PA INDUSTRIAL STRIFE IN PRE-WWI AMERICA PENNSYLVANIA ERIE COUNTY NORTH-EAST 20TH CENTURY 1900s 1910s PROGRESSIVE ERA ERIE RAILROAD STRIKE OF 1908 PENNSYLVANIA RAPID TRANSIT CO EARLY 20TH CENTURY WOMEN AND HOUSEWORK IN 1900S ECONOMY OF THE GREAT LAKES AREA IN THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY SOCIAL CONDITIONS IN EARLY 20TH CENTURY AMERICA ERIE COUNTY SOCIAL HISTORY AMERICANA HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS DIARY DIARIES JOURNALS PERSONAL HISTORY SOCIAL HISTORY HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUITÉ CONTRAT VÉLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGÜEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . unknown

1915 - 1931 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT JOURNAL DETAILING A TROVE OF GENEALOGICAL INFORMATION RELATING TO WATERLOO ONTARIO AND LANCASTER PENNSYLVANIA BY A VERY SOCIAL TORONTONIAN
Ontario Canada. Good. 1915. On offer is an interesting little diary/journal date from the turn of the 20th century in Toronto Canada. This paperback volume measures 6.75 inches by 4.25 inches. It contains 52 pages in week-per-page format plus several memoranda pages. The journal is approximately 40% complete. The book is in good condition and all pages are intact. The paper front cover has a small piece cut out of it. The handwriting is legible. The author of this journal is unknown. The journal is a typical week-per-page diary given out by companies to customers and clients. This diary was produced for and given out by McWilliam and Everist - Wholesale Commission Merchants in Toronto Canada. McWilliam and Everist were commission merchants in the wholesale fruit trade. Although the diary is dated 1899 entries were made in it from 1915 until 1931. It was not used as a diary but rather to record two groups of events: guests who visited the writer's home and marriages. The following are typical sample entries of the first group: "Russel Grove Martha Houser and John Dradge brought Annie and Veronica Webber and Nathan Martin & Oziah Berringer from Waterloo for dinner" Dec 24 1915; "Henry Hirsh and wife & Peter Hover and wife & Sidney Martin from Lancaster Co" Aug 14 1928. This would be Lancaster County PA in all likelihood as there is no Lancaster County in Ontario. Of particular interest and value are the second group of entries. These 8 pages contain approximately 50 undated notations about marriages: "Sarah Fretz marr Lawrence Hipple 1796 children Moses Mary Judith Margaret Sarah John Grubb married Mary High of Elgin Co". Elgin County is located in southwestern Ontario. "Esther Fretz daugh of Henry son of Weaver John married Chris Gayman his daugh Barbara married Henry Hinnsburger". For genealogists entries like this can be pure gold. They help connect different people and families and confirm relationships. Working with genealogist records and databases in Ontario it may be possible to draw much more detailed picture of relationships. From context it appears that a number of names are of Jewish or German background. Waterloo ON and Lancaster Co PA were both settled by Mennonites of German extraction and these communities have generally maintained good ancestral records. This volume would certainly be a very valuable reference for a researcher working in this area.; Manuscript; 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF; 19TH CENTURY; 1890S; 20TH CENTURY; 1910S; 1920S; 1930S; CANADA; ONTARIO; GENEALOGY; MCWILLIAMS & EVERIST; TORONTO; LANCASTER COUNTY PA; WATERLOO ONTARIO; GERMAN CANADIANS; PENNSYLVANIA GERMANS IN CANADA; MENNONITE SETTLERS IN ONTARIO; ONTARIO GERMANS GENEALOGY; CANADIANA; AMERICANA HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS DIARY DIARIES JOURNALS PERSONAL HISTORY SOCIAL HISTORY HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUITÉ CONTRAT VÉLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGÜEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . paperback

1924 CHARMING ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT TRAVEL DIARY OF AN IDYLLIC CAR TRIP UP AND DOWN THE EASTERN SEABOARD
UNITED STATES EASTERN SEABOARD. Good. 1924. On offer is a delightful account of an automobile trip up the eastern seaboard of the United States. This softcover journal contains 80 pages and is about 50% complete. The cover binding and pages are all in good condition. The handwriting is in pencil and ink and is quite legible. The author of this journal is unknown. Context suggests that the writer is a woman and that she travelling with friends. Context also suggests that both the car and driver are hired for the trip. Written in 1924 it chronicles an automobile trip taken from Miami FL to New York City over a period of two weeks. Each day's journey is very well described with the writer commenting on scenery interesting bits of information places they stayed and people they met. ". We had a room . in a pretty new home of Mr. And Mrs. Bassett delightful people. Mr. C recommended staying over a day and after breakfast he took us around the place - showing us jungle land which had been cleared & transformed into beautiful gardens". p 1; ". We have quite different scenery today - we have hills and valleys. Motored all day through the peach belt of Georgia. The orchards are beautiful - many in full bloom ." p 12; ". There was a good cement road to Salisbury NC a distance of 66 miles . arrived at the Ford Hotel in Salisbury at a quarter of 3 . Tow couples from Ohio stopped there for the night had come up from Florida one from Clearwater the other from Daytona." p 17; ". About 4 PM we crossed the line from NC to VA the hotel prices are driving many into camps nearly every town advertizes their free camp - we have passed many of them but I confess they do not appeal to me" p 25. Their journey ended in New York City: ". Crossed on the 23rd St ferry and arrived at Prince George Hotel around 3:25 . So brings us to our destination after a delightful trip of eighteen hundred miles all well and happy. . We feel we made no mistake in choosing Mr. Chandler and stand ready to recommend him highly" p. 32. This is a charming account of a road trip in the halcyon years immediately before the onset of the Great Depression. A geographer would thoroughly enjoy the descriptions of the passing landscapes and a social historian would likewise enjoy the perspectives shared by these obviously middle-class travellers as they journeyed north.; Manuscript; 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF; UNITED STATES; 1920S; 20TH CENTURY; ROARING TWENTIES; JAZZ AGE; EASTERN SEABOARD; EAST COAST AUTOMOBILE TRIP; TRAVEL JOURNALS; AUTOMOBILE TRAVEL IN 1920s; TRAVEL IN 1920s AMERICA; MIAMI FL; FLORIDA; NEW YORK; FROM MIAMI TO NEW YORK; CARS TRAVEL IN ROARING TWENTIES; AMERICAN LANDSCAPES IN 1920s; AMERICANA HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS DIARY DIARIES JOURNALS PERSONAL HISTORY SOCIAL HISTORY HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUITÉ CONTRAT VÉLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGÜEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . paperback

1928 ORIGINAL FAMILY TRIP DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A YOUNG WOMAN DESCRIBING AN IDYLLIC TIME OF FUN FRIENDS AND FROLICKING FROM NEW YORK TO SCOTLAND
UNITED STATES - SCOTLAND. Good. 1928. On offer is an interesting collection of loose-leaf notes that describe an Atlantic crossing in the heyday of the Roaring Twenties. This 'journal' consists of 38 handwritten pages on ships stationary. The pages are in good condition and the handwriting is quite legible. In size they measure 7.75 inches by 5.0 inches and are 100% complete. These loose-leaf pages were written by an unknown author. We only know her first name - Sadie. She refers to another woman Frances her father and a young boy/man named Tom Jr. accompanying her. In another place she refers to their group as their family. They are crossing the Atlantic Ocean on board RMS Tuscania. A number of pages carry a date in the month of July and a coloured postcard accompanying the manuscript depicts the Tuscania and carries a post mark dated July 1928. Shipboard life was a constant round of meals games and dancing. Card playing was a very popular way to pass the time: "A little cooler today but sea was very calm and smooth. Boat rides wonderfully - hardly a roll. Family all up for salt baths . Saw two enormous man-eating sharks this A.M. Their heads came out of the water. . " July 16; ". We stay up late at night12 or 1 o'clock have a 9 A.M. breakfast seems early tho in NY one does not think much about it. This is the lazy life. ." July 17; ". The family are all well and enjoying the sports - sleep in deck chairs and general fun. Dancing and cards in the evening. . " July 19. In September they make the return trip from England to the United States - this time on board SS Cameronia. The last 6 pages of her notes deal with that return trip. The last few days have been so full of things that I have not had time to write anything. Fri A.M. we left bridge of Allan for Glasgow. Sadie Frances and I came on 11 o'clock train. Tom Jr. Dad & Jack had come on earlier. ." Sept 8. The journal ends with them setting sail for home: "They put up the gangplank and we walked aboard. - yes - bound for the good old USA and home - one great trip ended. Sadie." This is a delightful description of one family's cross-Atlantic journey. They obviously were reasonably well-off. A social historian looking at how those who were more well-off lived in the days immediately preceding the Great Depression would find this an interesting relic.; Manuscript; 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF; 20TH CENTURY; 1920s; 20TH CENTURY; RMS TUSCANIA; SS CAMERONIA; ROARING TWENTIES; CRUISE LINERS; TRAVEL JOURNAL; CRUISE SHIPS; LUXURY CRUISES; CRUISE LINES; OCEAN TRAVEL; SEA TRAVEL; ENTERTAINMENT ON CRUISE SHIPS; TRANSATLANTIC TRIPS; ANCHOR LINE; CUNARD LINE STEAMSHIP COMPANIES IN 1920S; OCEAN LINERS; SOCIAL LIFE IN 1920s AMERICA; MARITIME HISTORY; TRAVEL IN THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY; AMERICANA HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS DIARY DIARIES JOURNALS PERSONAL HISTORY SOCIAL HISTORY HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUITÉ CONTRAT VÉLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGÜEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . unknown

1928 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY DETAILING AN ENGLISHMAN'S TRIP TO ARGENTINA TOURING RANCHES AND THE INTERIOR THEN BACK TO ENGLAND VIA SENEGAL
BRITAIN - ARGENTINA. Good. 1928. On offer is a unique British Legion diary dating from the years following WWI. This small volume measures 3.75 inches by 2.5 inches. It contains 365 pages plus memorandum pages. It is about 35% complete including memo pages. The leather cover is in good condition and all pages are intact. Given its small size the handwriting is dense but readable. The author is unknown. He keeps this diary record of his trip in 1928 from England to Argentina Senegal and back home on board a commercial cargo ship. Although there is no biographical information about him there are some clues about the writer. On March 8th 1928 he visited the Medical Appeals Board in Cardiff Wales. Earlier entries noted several visits to his doctor. He is likely a WWI veteran who is a member of the British Legion. British Legion membership at the time was restricted to veterans. His diary is a 1928 edition of the British Legion diary. An entry May 31 suggests that his home is Brookhill UK north of Brighton. His entries cover principally the time between March 14th and June 30th. On March 14th he reported on board SS Peterston bound for Uruguay and Argentina and they sailed on the 15th. His entries recount his experience on this trip. They left in a gale and experienced rough weather the first week: "Still rolling like hell. Was I sick and feeling awful. ." Mar 21. It has not been very hot yet. Nothing like the Red Sea. Always the Trade Wind. Temperature in Chart Room 80 o. Passed the half way mark." Mar 31. He arrived in Montevideo on Apr 13th. He tours some of the inland areas in the company of the ship's Captain. They then sailed to Rosairio Argentina up the Parana River. Although it is not specifically stated context suggests his ship is in Rosario to take on a load of processed meats from the Swift Canning Company and that he may be involved in the meat packing industry. Swift was and remains one of the largest meat processing companies in Argentina. After visiting the Swift plant he arranges to visit a large cattle ranch inland where he stayed for several days. He describes the cattle ranch in detail: ". Had the use of 2 horses every day and rode about the Estancia which is 6 miles square daily. There were 109 riding horses 100 draught over 3000 head of cattle and a lot of and some mules. The steers are very fine. and the draught horses of Percheron stock. The place has its own Smith and a Carpenter's shop. The house is like a very superior Indian Bungalow with their own Electric heating and mosquito-proof doors ." May 5. He returns to the ship and uses it as a base to tour the area. On My 24th he notes seeing the two Royal Navy destroyers HMS Amazon and HMS Ambuscade. He visits the English Club and golfs at the Hastingham Club. The ship left Rosario May 26th and visited Buenos Aires before departing for home via Dakar on the west coast of Africa. He describes the passage across the Atlantic and the few days they docked in Dakar. "Arrived off Dakar before daybreak. . The Peterston took on bunker coal from a hulk. . Nice town with eastern colouring like Egypt . a lot of French khaki clad whitehelmeted soldiers about. " June 16. On June 28th he arrived home: ". we eventually tied up stern to a quay in Victoria Dock at 2 A.M. Thank goodness we have arrived at last." June 26. His memoranda pages include other notes and observations such as graphic details about the process in the "Killing Sheds". This is an outstanding record of a sailing passage in the early 20th century. It is full of detailed descriptions of several major South American cities. It is an excellent resource for a historian and offers a window into the operations of one of the major food processing companies of the time.; Manuscript; 48mo - over 3" - 4" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF TRADE WITH ARGENTINA SAILING FROM BRITAIN TO ARGENTINA IN THE 1920s SS PETERSTON; SWIFT CANNING COMPANY; JBS ARGENTINA; MONTEVIDEO; ROSARIO; SANTA FE PROVINCE BUENOS AIRES; HMS AMAZON HMS AMBUSCADE; BRITISH LEGION TRAVEL JOURNALS SENEGAL ARGENTINA IN THE LATE 1920s CARGO SHIPS URUGUAY PARANA RIVER BROOKHILL UNITED KINGDOM CATTLE RANCHES IN ARGENTINA IN 1920S CATTLE RANCHING IN SOUTH AMERICA SOUTH AMERICAN CITIES IN THE 1920s FOOD PROCESSING COMPANIES IN THE 1920s HORSE BREEDING IN SOUTH AMERICA HORSES IN ARGENTINA IN THE 1920s HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS DIARY DIARIES JOURNALS PERSONAL HISTORY SOCIAL HISTORY HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUITÉ CONTRAT VÉLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGÜEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . hardcover

The author's name is not identified but from the context it is clear that she lives in the Indiana County in Pennsylvania studies at senior classes of the Indiana High School is a member of a school literary club her father is a dentist and she has an elder brother Norman. The diary provides an excellent picture of what life for a girl from a well-off family was like in a small Pennsylvania town in 1930s. She writes about her dreams and aspirations - she wants to teach children in poor district or teach ethics abroad and documents her everyday life. Her diary is full of details characteristic to those days including popular radio programs places; films and books people leisure activities that were extremely popular but almost forgotten now like Tom Thumb Golf and many more. She lists what she and her family did every day including what she ate and where they went. Her first entry is made on January 1 1931: "Amid magic music and humanity my New Year was ushered in at Camp Rest with Archie! I slept till 10:30 am had a huge half of a grapefruit for breakfast; brussel sprouts for lunch. Grind drill fill! Papa filled my three cavities. We drove out in the C.C. and saw some gay sled riders. Grandpa and Grandma were here for dinner; Grandpa told about New Year Eve at Richmond Va. during the Civil War. Papa and Mama went to see Streams and Rays; Norman had a date and I went to see the gala performance "Just imagine - 1980". C'est tout." "Just Imagine" was an American pre-code science fiction film by David Butler. Naturally school takes a large part of her records: "School wasn't so bad as we had no assignments. I gave a talk in Health class on "Physical Illiteracy". . after supper we listened to Amos and Andy and Thomas Lowell" Jan. 5. "Amos and Andy" was a favourite early evening radio show in 1930s America by Thomas Lowell preeminent journalist traveller and broadcaster. She seems intelligent and idealistic: "We got to talking about what I am going to do after I finish I.H.S. Indiana High School. I would like to teach forth grade or around there in a district of poor some Jews Greeks Italians Irish etc. children. I think I'd love that. But if I go to High Pallantin College this time for preparation for that would be unduly delayed" Jan.6. She is a member of Pandorean Literary Society - a club of High School girls well read and seems to be a rather good student: "Mrs. Mechler said my P.G.Plane Geometry problems were good. I prepared in Biology Study Hall a report on Woman of Rome. We pronounced in French and almost went mad. We discussed Emerson's essay on friendship in English. Some kids gave their reports on Cicero. I started to read The Kentucky Cardinal . It's by James Lane Allen and it's wonderful. Dr. Alexander here for prayer week stated that life is not goblet to be drained but rather a measure to be filled. Oh how the human heart can ache!" Jan. 9; "I read two short stories one called "Mixed Doubles" which inspired me to really become a decent tennis player this summer - square and calm. The other was "Sylvia . Winter Vacation" which inspired me to be liked for my real self and not for name riches or personal advantages."Jan. 14. And so it continues - she writes about her classes books she reads trips with the family dreams and her plans for future. The diary contains wealth of names of local residents teachers and students making it an excellent source of information for genealogists and local historians. There are many entries about school subjects lessons and assignments including how she felt about them which makes an interesting reading for historians of American education.; Manuscript; 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF UNITED STATES; PENNSYLVANIA; INDIANA. NOT IDENTIFIED
1960 SUPER ORIGINAL JOURNAL AND SCRAPBOOK DETAILING ONE MAN'S LOVE OF THE SEA AND THE SHIP'S THAT PLY THE OCEAN'S WATERS
NOT IDENTIFIED. Fair. 1960. On offer is an outstanding personal notebook/journal written by a sailor in the mid-20th Century. The soft cover notebook measures 7 inches by 4 inches. The cover has separated from the notebook and one page has come loose but the entire journal is complete. The pages show some discolouration from age. There are 112 pages un-numbered and it is approximately 90% complete. There are many pictures and articles glued into the notebook. Many of these illustrations date back to the early years of the 20th Century. The journal is entitled Sea Lore Vol II. The author is unknown. Referring to great sailing ships over 50 to 60 years context suggests that this notebook was likely written in the early 1960s by a man who loved the sea and sailing ships. There are much older newspaper clipping for example the Laura Ann Barnes aground in 1921. The journal is a fascinating look into the world of sailing in the late 19th and early 20th Century. The pages contain notes descriptions and stories as well as many drawing and photographs. The journal opens with a short description of SS Herzogin Cecilie. She was built for Norddeutscher Lloyd or North German shipping company. She was one of the fastest commercial sailing ships - the so-called windjammers - ever built. Eight times winner of Australia - Great Britain grain race she ran on the rocks at Sewer Mill Cove near Salcombe Dover England in the early morning of April 27 1936. She was bound for Ipswich to discharge a cargo of grain. Records show that she was hauled off the rocks but soon capsized and sank. He refers to John Vanderdecken also recorded as Hendrick Vanderdecken who was captain of a ship rounding Cape Good Hope in the middle of a fierce storm - "Story of Vanderdecken The Flying Dutchman" and then the author tells a version of the tale of this famous ghost ship. He lists 9 pages of ships including famous four-masted barques barquentines and schooners: "More Information About Captain Erikson's fleet of wind jammers". One line drawing is an excellent illustration of basic helm commands for a sailing ship. Another is a fine drawing showing how these great sailing ships used the prevailing winds to race across the oceans. On another page he notes his ideal ship: "My Ideal Ship 90 Tons Broad beamed deisel engine fore and aft sails". Another lists the crew of HMS Bounty who mutinied April 28th 1789. There are photographs and foldout illustrations cut out from newspapers and magazines of some of the great sailing ships of the late 19th and early 20th centuries such as Pamir Laura Ann Barnes Yankee Nantuckett and Christian Radich. The Christian Radich still sails today under a Norwegian flag. There are pages of definitions drawings of knots and illustrations of rigging. The author of this notebook truly loved the sea and it shines through. A historian or sailing enthusiast would find this a fascinating glimpse into the days of the great 3 and 4-masted sailing ships that plied the world's oceans. The lists of ships make an excellent cross-reference tool.; Manuscript; 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF MID-20TH CENTURY SAILING SHIPS SAILING IN THE LATE 19TH CENTURY SAILING IN THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY TEA CLIPPERS; GRAIN CLIPPERS; TALL SHIPS; WINDJAMMERS; SS HERZOGIN CECILIE; USS SEVEN SEAS; THE FLYING DUTCHMAN; CAPTAIN VAN DER DECKEN; PAMIR; LAURA ANN BARNES; YANKEE; NANTUCKETT; CHRISTIAN RADICH. Notes and Index by Lawrance Thompson and Arnold Grade
New Hampshire's Child: The Derry Journals of Lesley Frost - SIGNED
Albany NY: State University of New York Press 1969 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. DATED INSCRIBED & SIGNED BY AUTHOR. Inscribed & signed by author Frost who was the daughter of New Hampshire Poet Robert Frost. The journals offer a rare intimate look at Robert Frost as a deeply involved playful and indulgent father rather than the aloof artist often depicted in traditional biographies. Lesley's entries chronicle simple country pleasures-such as picking wild chestnuts sliding on frozen bogs and gathering flowers-revealing a childhood insulated from the darker personal tragedies that would later impact the Frost family. Typical book age wear including light fore edge foxing. Dust jacket has moderate to heavier wear. State University of New York Press hardcover
