‎ORIGINAL 1852 LONDON DIARY - THE DIARY/JOURNAL OF GEORGE BEAUFOY RN OWNER OF BEAUFOY VINEGAR FACTORY AND VICTORIAN ERA TYCOON OF ONE OF ENGLAND'S MOST IMPORTANT COMMODITIES‎

‎London England. Very Good. 1852. On offer is a prize 1852 diary and journal of George Beaufoy a prominent merchant in London England. This book which is in excellent condition is an outstanding description of his 2nd year running this already century-old family firm. The book is 10 in by 9 1/2 in. The paperboard cover and all pages are in excellent condition. There are 224 pages and the book is 100% complete. The handwriting is clearly written if somewhat difficult to read. George Beaufoy was born in 1796 and served in the Royal Navy from 1810 until 1851 retiring as a Lieutenant Commander. In 1852 he took over the family firm - Beaufoy Vinegar Factory. The firm was founded sometime before 1743 by his grandfather. George Beaufoy ran the firm from 1851 until his death in 1864. The firm which produced vinegar wine mineral water and cordials continued until 1932 when it merged with Sarson's Vinegars and several other firms to form British Vinegars Limited BVL. Through a number of mergers BVL today is part of the Japanese firm Mizkan Group the largest supplier of Japanese seasonings worldwide. The entries are a mix of personal and business notations. A number detail various social activities while others offer detailed information on business affairs & matters. "Took Anne to see Houses of Parliament and afterwards drove round Regents Park and home by Grosvenor Place" Mar 27 1852. "In afternoon went with Anne to the Zoological Gardens Regent Park and remained and hour & a half to hear the music. Was not aware until we are at the gardens that Saturday is Gala Day" May 27 1852 "Left South Lambeth about 1/2 past 11 arrived at Sheepshead about 4 or 1/4 before found all pretty well ." Jul11 1852 "Went to Sheepshead by Express. Walked on from Abington Arrived 12:40. Found Mary Jones and Miss Jonesat Sheepshead Latter to take leave she will sail of the 1st of September from Spithead ." Aug 20 1852. "Wm Christmas and sic old and good customer came over and said he should continue his custom for he could not get a better article and I said he should write to Mr. Wakely if he could tell him where to buy a better article than Beaufoy and I thank him" Sept 8 1852. Some notable entries include a correspondence with Field Marshall Arthur Wellesley 1st Duke of Wellington the leading military figure in Britain: "My Lord Duke I beg to return to you my sincere thanks for . Feb 6 1852. An entry on Jan 7th details will arrangements he made for his new wife Anne. The July 11 entry details his income tax declaration. It shows an annual income of £6000 equivalent today to £800000 or US$1 million. His entry also notes that he believes he paid too much! The Memoranda Section is filled with business references calculations and records. Records include purchases of various ingredients amounts paid to some staff monthly production runs of 'sweets' term used to describe wine and even Christmas presents. This diary presents an utterly fascinating detailed look at the daily life of a very successful businessman in mid-19th century London. It also gives a glimpse into some of the finances of a successful business operating across the country. ‎1842 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF A YOUNG CLERK AT THE FOREIGN DEPARTMENT WHO TEN YEARS LATER WAS APPOINTED AS HER MAJESTY'S JUDGE IN THE "HAVANA MIXED COMMISSION FOR THE SUPPRESSION OF THE SLAVE TRADE" AND WAS MURDERED WHILE IN SERVICE‎

‎London England. Very Good. 1842. This super original diary written by 24-year old George Canning Backhouse gives an excellent insight into a life of a young man from the upper-middle class starting his diplomatic career and living in London during the early Victorian era. His father John Backhouse 1784-1845 was a noted British politician who served as a Permanent Under-secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and who retired the same year when the diary was written. One of the first records is a memo regarding his father's papers. In 1838 George Canning graduated from the Christ Church College in Oxford and started working at the Secretary of State's Office as a clerk at the Foreign Department. The diary contains about 50 entries some mentioning his work at the office but mostly documenting his social life consisting of parties visits balls horse rides skating in High Park and Kensington Gardens attending cricket games. He was an active theatergoer and his diary contains names of actors and mentions many cultural events - he visits Lyceum and Drury Lane theaters pantomime in Covent Garden with William Payne who was known as "the king of pantomime" Van Amburgh's performance with wild animals he mentions Bouffe a French actor extremely popular at that time: "Dined with Turner at Windham and went with him to a French play last night - Bouffe wonderful in "Le Gamin de Paris" after which he made farewell adieux in verse". Another favorite activity of his was horse riding: "Rode in the morning to Lymm with Elizabeth who lost her stirrup and fell off when near home." On February 18th he lost his dog: "Walked with Catty in the Park with Brisk whom I lost by great carelessness when near home on our return: looked for Brisk on my way to the Office but could not find him. Went to the French play having a stall alongside with Blackburn - Very good". Backhouse refers to significant events like Prince of Wales christening and also mentions many names including clerks from the Foreign Department with whom he socializes and names of notable persons of that time like Under Secretary Addington Ashburton Stopford Lady Murray. It also contains some of his expenses including rent. On July 28th George's father with other family members sailed to Europe: "My father and all sailed from Blackwall by the "Rainbow" for Antwerp." and the archive includes a letter from John Backhouse written in Berne and dated September 20th and a bill for books on Italy bought from Henry George Bohn a prominent publisher and rare books dealer from London with a letter to George asking to settle accounts with Bohn: "Bohn is a man of such perfect respectability that you will get a correct answer if you ask for a statement of my account" The diary: a pocket-size book with leather cover Peacock's Historical Almanack for 1842. Text is faded at few pages. Otherwise in very good condition. Size: 2.8'x4.1 Letter from Berne dated September 20 1942: A leaf folded into an envelope and sealed with a black seal a copy of a bill for books on Italy with a letter with explanations on the other side.; The letter has tears on creases. ‎BROOKLYN NY. Good. 1935. On offer is a diary of a man living in the midst of the Great Depression in New York City. Measuring 6 inches by 4 inches the diary contains 365 pages plus memoranda. It is about 55% complete. The cover binding and pages are all in good condition. The handwriting is small but neat and readable. The author of the diary was George E. Applegate. He was born in New Mexico in 1913. His father Morrow Applegate was a sales representative for auto parts firms. Applegate passed away in 1980 at the age of 67. He had worked for 27 years at Bankers Trust Company in New York and moved to Santa Fe in 1972. He was actively involved in cultural and civic life of the city and in 1978 with his daughter Nancy purchased the oldest Santa Fe's bookstore Villagra. He was a president and treasurer for 30 years of Gilbert and Sullivan society of New York and a member of D'Oyly Carte Opera Trust. At the time of writing he was 21 years old living at home with his parents in New York City. Applegate was working at the Kings County Savings Bank in Brooklyn. The bank is long gone but its 4 story French Second Empire-style building remains having been designated a New York City landmark and been added to the National Register of Historic Places. His entries are filled with comments about his work and about his new role as a member of a Freemason Lodge. In fact the year opens with him involved in some controversy at the Lodge: ". Dad phoned Mr. Bowers to have me go to Anglo-Saxon Lodge which I did. Henry C. Turner installed their officers. Considered the offence" an act of subversion to the principals of Freemasonry". Jan 2; "Expected to work late tonight but had to get home to put on my tux for my first Lodge meeting as an officer. Left bank about 7 and Eppers objected saying I will have to bring tux in and dress there in the future. ." Jan3. He is very close to his grandmother and is quite affected when she passes away: "Rain! Stopped at grandma's on my way home. She's in bed for the first time quite sick. Was up yesterday. Asked if I got my raise yet and if I had come "for the last look". I couldn't keep smiling tears came into my eyes instead when she said she hopes I'll be a fine man. I am a "fine young man." She asked ma "Did the doctor tell you the time" "What time mother" "When I'm going to go" was her reply! I said "goodnight grandma" on leaving and she said "Goodnight George goodnight." Mother staying there again with them. Uncle George and Aunt Ella drove me home said tonight Anna is improving. I prayed as I have so often done that grandma may be spared much suffering if she actually has cancer which we all doubt. She has had no pain yet and hasn't lost much weight" Jan 14; "Right home for supper mother not here. To grandma's a little before 8. Met Uncle George and Aunt Ella coming out. "Well it's all over" they said. "She died at quarter past six." Went upstairs and saw her her jaw tied up her hands folded. Had been awake all night last night had a tough time and knew she was dying. Some of her remarks were heartbreaking. "So many nice things to do but it's too late now." "You're not afraid of death are you" She kissed mother Nan and Uncle G. and said "Goodbye" "forever" she added to Nan. They sat with her and held her hand right up until the end. Uncle George came back said Tanta Anna is worse and will not live through the night!." Jan 15; ". Eve. The funeral services……I was alone there for a while when the others went out to supper. Stood at Grandma's coffin and gazed at her in an attitude which I shall probably always remember…" Jan 17. His maternal grandmother Elizabeth Corlett Craigen and another family member Anna Stratmann Thomas died with one day difference. Elizabeth Craigen was a wife of George J. Craigen a president of Lennox and Craigen brick companies and an assistant chief clerk of the New York Tax Department. Anna was a daughter of a surgical instruments importer Ernst Stratmann a noted resident of Flatbush. George often expresses dislike for his job and is critical of some of his co-workers: "Mulreany phoned told me the details of the proposed trip. I decided to ask Mr. Klinck the idea was so wonderful! I did. He said I should ask Schmann's on the quiet. He has heard nothing further and said I should let dad and Koppff take care of matters. Asked Charlie while down in the vault and received a horribly cold answer. If there was a chance of any one having a Saturday off he'd ask for himself first! Others haven't had any vacation etc. Was thoroughly disgusted. After all the hours they make us work in this dump they act insulted if we want a Saturday morning off! Pouring out. Walked all the way to Lenox Road before getting a trolley so I was thoroughly drenched as well as being some damned disgusted" Feb 14. He notes outside events as these entries show: "Shortly after noon word came in that Wiley Post and Will Rogers had both been killed in an airplane crash in Alaska. Will Rogers will probably be remembered as a "typical" American who could poke fun at Statesmen and get away with it. His brief articles in the New York Times and his radio program and movies were always full of good clean humor and philosophy. ." Aug 10; "War Begins is the daily news headlines today. Now that the Ethiopian rainy season is over Italy is going ahead with her plans that may upset the entire world before she is finished. The threats of war have been in the air for several months and now it's on. I hope and pray we may never become involved in it ." Oct 3. What George probably never thinks about is that in a few short years he will be enlisted in the U.S. Army fighting in the largest war ever seen. This is a fine diary of a young man struggling to find his place in the world in the midst of a terrible depression. ‎Connecticut CT. Good. 1884. Full-Leather. On offer is an original 1884 handwritten diary of a needle peddler George E. Metcalf of Connecticut. George was once a teacher; now he crisscrosses Connecticut as he sells needles then oranges then stationery then back to needles. He zips across the state first on train or "the cars" but thinks nothing of walking ten or more miles between towns peddling his wares. He gets a letter from his wife in early January that their baby is sick so he takes the train home. One minute he's in Bristol then Glastonbury then Windsor Locks then New Haven then Poquonock then Branford then Cheshire and Southington. In March another baby is born. In April it appears his wife Alice has had enough and heads home to Middleton with the babies. In Bristol he stays in a traveler's home "thick with bedbugs." He sells in Waterbury and Millvale Guilford and Middletown. He visits the P.T. Barnum side shows in Hartford. George has an oyster breakfast at Branford and then goes oystering in Guilford on Long Island Sound. Then on to Saybrook and Deep River. Walked to East Lyme then over to New London. He notes that he has turned 31 and is just a peddler! He watches a Republican torchlight parade in New Britain Oct. 16 Democratic procession Oct. 23. On Nov. 26 he's selling stationery in Colchester and reports that he's made the most money today that he's ever made-- $6.48. He spends Christmas at home with his parents in Middleton. He receives a handkerchief for a gift. No more mention of wife or babies but he looks forward to better sales in 1885. Description: ~120 pp. 7.5 x 12 cm. ‎NEWPORT RHODE ISLAND TO BERGEN NORWAY et al 1935. On offer is a super archive of typed ship's logs and scrapbook regarding the noted schooner "The Mistress" dated 1935 - 1947. George E. Roosevelt President Teddy Roosevelt's nephew was Master and Navigator of the Mistress and while there are no ownership inscriptions or other identifiers it seems likely this scrapbook was compiled and written by Roosevelt. The Mistress was the former flagship of the New York Yacht Club built in Shelbourne Nova Scotia in 1930 for George Roosevelt. Designed by Sherman Hoyt she raced her way through the Depression and War years in Long Island Sound the bi-annual Newport to Bermuda Race and contests in Europe. The archive includes three original 1935 typed logs describing the tragic 1935 transatlantic Yacht Race from Newport - Bergen Norway. Each day of the race is mentioned in 10 pages of typed manuscript. Minor changes have been made inserted in pencil. Plus two original carbon copies of the same. This log mentions several tragic deaths aboard other yachts in this race. A 1931 original typed log of a trip from Newport R.I. on July 4 to July 23 1931 11 pages onboard The Mistress" with George E. Roosevelt Master. Plus one original carbon copy with minor changes inserted in pencil. Another rather interesting typed log or manuscript is a 1947 New York to Panama trip about a Navy vessel. This voyage was from March 31 to April. There is a great 12 x 10 x 6 inch photo of Newsman and officers on board the USS Wisconsin for the Fourth Naval Reserve Training cruise and is captioned. The log of the journey is attached. This includes daily notes and events with navy officers and newspaper reporters as well as the President of the Shell Oil Co. This log was typed on 12 pages on the reverse of each page is letter head from Harris Upham & Co- a famous brokerage firm dealing in securities. Here are some snippets: June 12 1935 Our cook deserves a few remarks. He is a Dane and admits an age of 51 but looks older. His performance during the two days of heavy weather was marvelous. Hot meals well cooked and promptly served greeted us each time we came below cold and wet. All this time cooking in galley without a breath of ventilation as we of course were battened down completely during the gale. He feels hurt if one does not eat a lot and will get anything asked for such as tea instead of coffee etc. Our skipper says this storm would be exceeded only by winter gales or tropical hurricanes. Our cook says that the beating he received was not deserved even by one who murdered his father and mother: and he says he never did that. June 21 1935 Long 27.20 The sun came out this afternoon and its warmth was most grateful. It soon went behind the clouds and our fingers on the wheel again became numb as they have been for day. Below decks we are warm and the food continues wonderful. our eggs are still good: the bread still fresh; rum ration served at times when tired and cold is far superior to whisky and brandy. Contrary to our course in 1931 we took ice with us this trip and the last of it melted away today and we had our last fresh meat today. Of our 320 gallons of water we have consumed only 100 so if conditions continue favorable water will be turned on in the toilet in three days. We so far have used only salt water for washing and bathing. One cup a piece a day for shaving has been allowance of fresh water. BIO NOTES: George Emlen Roosevelt 1887-1963 was a banker and philanthropist was a first cousin once-removed of U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt and one of the most prominent railroad financiers of his day involved in 14 railroad reorganizations. He also held directorships in several important companies including the Morgan-controlled Guaranty Trust Company the Chemical Bank and the Bank for Savings in New York. ‎STORMVILLE DUCHESS COUNTY NEW YORK. Good. 1898. On offer is an historical manuscript relic of Duchess County in New York State being the original handwritten diary of George F. Vickerman a 25 year old. The diary is dated 1898 which was the year of the Spanish American War and there is a fair bit of mentioned of the war by George though he didn't fight. From the daily entries he manages if not runs or owns a large seeming dairy creamery operation. There is much talk of going to Stormville many times on his "wheel" he also mentions going to Green Haven Poughquag Hughsonville Gay Head and Beckmanville. Local historians and researchers of the area will find a treasure trove of local details and genealogy as George never fails to mention names plus he talks about going to parties shows his work the war Odd Fellow parades and banquets and more. He also mentions a terrible accident that nearly cut a man in half. The man who died was William Knapp and for some reason they have to give affidavits and on a different occasion Mrs. Knapp and her lawyer go to where George is possibly his work and are looking for evidence. Then finally in December Ella his wife has a still born child and then she dies the next day. Here are some snippets: 1898 "January 11th Received letters from John Lee and Krooss a telegram. Aunt Lind R. Churned. Salt butter. Battleship Maine blowed up. Particulars later. L. And Mrs. B. played dominos against Van and I 5-4 our favor. Received 9 cans sour milk from J. M. Reppenhagen." "March 1st Cool and pleasant. Van Charles and I went to Gay Head to town meeting. Whole Democratic ticket was elected. I went to Newburg on 4:05 P.M. went to Middletown on 6:45. ‎Camrose Alberta Canada Canadian Prairies. Fair with no dust jacket. Hardcover. On offer is a fine example of a multi-year diary kept by a young man named George Granger in rural Alberta Canada during World War Two WWII. The author of the diary is George Beverley Granger b. 1927. He was the youngest of five children born to Barlow Clyde Granger 1889-1966 and Helen Marie Solien 1895-1973. He was raised and lived in Galahad Camrose Alberta. This diary originally belonged to his mother as she inscribed it with her name and made one brief entry on January 3 1943. George then crossed her name out written his own and written the rest of the diary in his large childlike hand. He kept the diary almost every day from 1943-1946 and was less consistent in 1947. There is very little information available on George Granger but we know he is around 16 when he begins his diary and 21 when it ends. This aligns with the early entries he makes about attending school. We also know from his mother's inscription that he lives in the village of Galahad. He works on a family farm and also ‘in town’ unloading freight at the railroad station. George's daily entries are generally brief but certainly until 1945 make continued veiled references to WWII. Mostly he comments on seeing ‘airplanes’ - groups of them most days. Another constant in his entries are the many movies that he sees. Some brief excerpts from the diary follow: “Fair and warm. Earned 30 cents. 3 airplanes. Didn’t go to school” Mar 17 1943. “Thawing. Got $1.10 today. 7 airplanes. Have $28.00 now” Mar 26 1943. “Fair and windy. Hauled out junk and got water. Our army invade France. Last train 4: 00. 3 airplanes” June 6 1944. As noted he lists the many movies that he saw and indeed his diary could be a catalogue of the most popular war-time movies then in circulation. “Show “Queen of the Yukon”.” Apr 3 1944. “Fair and mild. Worked. Show “Captain Eddie”” Sept 28 1946. Canada entered WWII in September 1939. The British government looked to its Commonwealth allies Canada Australia New Zealand and South Africa for assistance in training up the necessary air crews required to prosecute the war. Canada was an ideal location as it was the closest to Britain far from the combat front and had the vast space necessary for air training. In 1939 the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan BCATP signed and the program was rolled out in Canada. Between 1940 and 1945 some 151 schools had been established across Canada with a ground organization of 104113 men and women. By the end of the Second World War the BCATP had produced 131553 aircrew including pilots wireless operators air gunners and navigators for the Air Forces of Great Britain Australia Canada and New Zealand. A number of these schools / bases were located in Alberta one of the largest being in Edmonton Alberta. This would account for Granger’s almost daily sighting of planes. For a social historian this diary offers an excellent long-term look at life in rural a rural Prairie province in Canada during the war years of WWII. This five-year diary measures 6.0 inches by 4.25 inches and contains 365 pages. It is 100% complete. The cover is in good condition. However it has separated completely from the binding. ‎KANSAS CITY MO - ASIATIC-PACIFIC THEATER. Good. 1944. On offer is a super original manuscript diary and utterly fascinating eyewitness account of the island invasions of the U.S. military in the Pacific Theatre in WWII. There are 2 volumes in this collection. The first book measures 8 inches by 5 inches and contains 152 pages. This volume is only 5% complete - the completed pages do not contain text only pasted in photographs. In addition there are 9 loose photographs inside. The book is in good condition. The second volume measures 7.5 inches by 4 inches. It is bound at the top and in the military is known generally as a Field Message Pad or FMP. It contains 152 pages. It is 90% complete and has numerous photographs in addition to extensive entries covering the period May 1944 to Dec 1945. The back cover has separated but otherwise it is in good condition. The handwriting is clear and legible. George H. Laney was a 33 year old living in Kansas City MO. He was married and had 2 young children when he was drafted in Nov 1943. Assigned to the U.S. Navy he underwent a series of training programs over the next 6 months. On May 12th he reported on board LST 613 bound for the Pacific Theatre of war. LST stood for Landing Ship Tank. Built to transport tanks wheeled and tracked vehicles artillery and construction equipment LST's were designed to be beached to off-load their cargo. As described in his record LST's could also serve as troop carriers casualty evacuation vessels and prisoner of war transport ships. They had a range of 24000 miles. Unusually for a naval vessel they used high octane gasoline instead of diesel as fuel. Direct hits in combat were generally catastrophic. While slow and often challenging to maneuver they were a vital part of any sea-borne invasion. LST 613 served in the thick of the invasion of the Philippine Islands earning 5 battle stars or commendations. Laney records LST 613's journey from Seneca IL where she was laid down and launched to New Orleans via the Mississippi River. "Commissioning Day at Algiers Algiers Naval Base New Orleans LA. Mother and Dad came down from Huston to see me had a very nice visit. Called Louise long distance Liberty was good only I didn't have enough money Mother gave me $5 to get something to eat."May 19 1944. Over the next several pages he describes their passage through the Panama Canal and across the Pacific Ocean. Eventually they docked at Manus Island in Papua New Guinea. "At Manus . I saw Bob Hope Show. It was excellent. Participating were Hope Jerry Colongna Jerry Colonna actor and Bob Hope's famous sidekick Francis Langford Lanny Ross and Patricia Thompson a dancer. The show was wonderful better than anything else they could send us out here ."Aug 23 - Sept 4 1944. "Getting ready for the invasion of the Philippines" Oct 6 1944. "Leyte Invasion. Today is my 34th birthday and what a day I had was almost a nervous wreck. Jap suicide planes came over about all day. Couple LST's got hit by mortar fire. Large navy guns opened up all day and night on the island. I was glad to get the hell out of there. In returning to N.GNew Guinea LST 695 was torpedoed between Leyte and Palou ." Oct 20 1944. "Cruiser Nashville hit by suicide bombers in the straits between Mindanao and Negros."Dec 13 1944. "Mindanao Invasion D-Day 4 down and 2 assists We were hove to with a lot of other LSTs off shore when 20 or more Jap suicide bombers came over and attacked us. We were in the middle of the whole works and our boys shot down four of the bastards. Two LSTs 734-472 were hit by these suicide plains and set off high octane gasoline. The ships were abandoned about five minutes after the hit. Another LST was hit while we were on the beach. It was the most hellish day I have ever spent in my life but I wouldn't have missed it for anything. ." Dec 15 1944. In addition to his detailed descriptions of ship operations and combat Laney included a number of photographs in his book. The pictures are for the most part glued into place but some have come free enough to read the notations on the reverse. They include pictures of himself his shipmates annotated family members and what appear to be pictures of his wife Louise and his children. There are a number of other pictures of downed and wrecked Japanese fighters and bombers. Other pictures show the landscape and local native people. One appears to be a Japanese prisoner of war. On Nov 1st 1945 he disembarked LST 613 and began his journey home. His journal ends with this: "I was discharged and became a civilian. So this is the end of my career in the navy. Boarded the train for home. Arrived in KC at midnight. Louise and the gang was there to meet me." Dec 7 1945. For a military or naval historian this is a fabulous record. It is an eyewitness account of the critical invasions of the Philippines recounted by a person who was there in the thick of it. It is a detailed well-written account. Historians and researchers can use this primary material for direct evidence and to cross-reference other sources. For a writer it is an inspirational story of a young man who left family and home to serve his country with not a word of complaint. The photographs especially of fellow crew mates destroyed warplanes and local inhabitants give an air of immediacy that brings his words to life. ‎KOHIMA IMPHAL INDIA. Good. 1941. On offer is a substantial archive of manuscript diaries letters documents photographs and ephemera handwritten and accumulated by George Kerr of Aikenhead Road Gorbals Glasgow who served in India Burma and Germany in the Royal Armoured Corps during the Second World War. There are over 160 pieces in this grouping beginning with his call up to the Armoured Corps at Catterick in 1941 and following Kerr to India where he served with the 26th Hussars and 3rd Carabiners and in various tanks including the Grant and the Sherman. The 3rd Carabiners served in their M3 tanks at Kohima and Imphal; "B" Squadron in particular was in heavy fighting up the steep slopes at Imphal - Kerr was "B" squadron as there are two handwritten chits for "Disposition of Armament" for Tank 25814 'Balmoral'; it was common practice for all tanks in a squadron to be given call signs with the initial letter of that squadron. The chits mention both 75mm and 37mm ammunition which corresponds with the M3 tank. His theatre-made 14th Army patch is included. The archive includes: two "Jotter" notepads used as a diary during his long troopship voyage from England via South Africa to arrival in Bombay and the first week or so in India; a small leather pocketbook contains names and addresses of dozens of other tankers and soldiers clearly friends and comrades of Kerr a few girls mixed in as well as a list of letters he has written to each; photos believed to be of Kerr two in the 14th Army slouch hat; a letter certificate for "His Britannic Majesty's Transport X5" crossing the equator; there are 15 letters to Kerr some immediately postwar from what appears to be a girlfriend in Prince Albert Saskatchewan whom research suggest he married and moved to Canada; ENSA programs handwritten songs poem and comedy routines by Kerr for entertainment "smokers" in India; ticket stubs from India and also Germany Luneburg theatre; three 3 "Airgraph" letters sent to Kerr while in the 26th Hussars in "Prohibited Area Colaba India"; an apparently silver pin with Chinese characters pinback broken; a "Health Memoranda for British Soldiers in the Tropics" covering topics such as VD malaria sandfly fever worms and somewhat surprisingly denouncing cigarette smoking - but pipes are OK!; two 2 prewar sports annuals from Strathbungo School Pollokshaws; Indian railway chits including overnight berths three SEAC South East Asia Command Military Newspapers from 1945; an intriguing billfold wallet taken from a Japanese soldier. It is a rather cheaply made accordion folder with garish cover featuring Tiger Balm advertising. The interior is lined or made from documents in English but referring to identity of Malayans which we suspect that this "wallet" is something that the Japanese soldier picked up or bought in Malaya possibly after the fall of Singapore. In the sections of the wallet are several photos showing a Japanese couple in wedding clothes photo from a studio in Amoy China a very western-looking Japanese young man in plus-four pants with kanji on the reverse an attractive woman in kimono an older couple parents and three men in uniform one navy two army. There is also a business card in Japanese. Also in the wallet is a selection of Chinese and Japanese paper money including Occupation money from the Philippines and other places. One photo of the Japanese men in uniform has a pencil note on the back apparently in Kerr's writing: "This Jap never saw the rising sun set" and has the address of a trooper in Manchester. ‎1914 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY BY THE COMMANDER OF THE FAMED AND NOTORIOUS HMS AGINCOURT FROM DETERMINED MOBILIZATION TO THE DANGEROUS NORTH SEA‎

‎HMS AGINCOURT THE NORTH SEA. Very Good. 1914. On offer is a superb relic of World War I and British naval history being a manuscript diary kept by the Commander of the Royal Navy's famed dreadnought the 'HMS Agincourt' at the beginning of WWI during her assignment as part of the British Grand Fleet in the North Sea engaging the German Kaiserliche Marine's High Seas Fleet. This diary begins July 29th with a call to mobilize and then there is the immediate outbreak of the war in August 1914 through to December 1914 very neatly written in ink with one photograph some sketches cruising orders and newspaper cuttings. This important historical first hand account was handwritten by George Napier Tomlin RN Rear Admiral 1875 - 1947 gives first hand content and detailed insight into the workings of the British Grand Fleet and documents the confusion that existed in the immediate days after the war broke out on August 5th 1914. Tomlin's original assignment as he notes on the 30th is aboard the HMS Majestic. Tomlin writes regarding the appointment as one: 'which I look upon as an insult. If there is to be a fight I want to be in a fighting ship & not in one recovered from a scrap heap'. Excitingly his assignment changes and he is one of the first aboard a newly 'commandeered' Turkish ship renamed Agincourt. Collectors and historians of the First World War will also delight knowing that diaries unlike letters were not censored. The British had concentrated their Fleet at Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands and 'HMS Agincourt' was sailing back and forth to the Bight of Heligoland to engage the Kaiser's Fleet. Much can be learned about life aboard a British warship as the journal is replete with details about navigational positions fleet details officers' names and positions courts martial administered etc. Much anxiety existed about German submarines and mines and Tomlin's drawings elaborate on mines in the North Sea as well as the British Fortification with wire nets of the Harbour of Buncrana Ireland. Frequent reference is made to the C in C Commander in Charge Jellicoe who had his headquarters on the 'HMS Iron Duke'. The diary also shows the concerns about Zeppelins and mentions their appearance. Visits aboard the 'HMS Agincourt' by 1st Lord Winston Churchill were recorded on September 17 while the ship was anchored at Loch Ewe in Scotland. Finally Tomlin mentions the sinking of various British and German ships among them the German U-18 and the German Battle Cruiser 'SMS Scharnhorst' by British Ships off the Falkland Islands where the famous German Admiral Graf Spee met his fate. Political Background: In 1904 in response to the build-up of the German Kaiserliche Marine's High Seas Fleet it was decided that a northern base was needed to control the entrances to the North Sea. Originally Rosyth was considered for the base and then Invergordon at Cromarty Firth but construction in both places was delayed leaving them largely unfortified by the time of the First World War. Scapa Flow was used many times for exercises in the years leading up to the war. When the time came for the fleet to move to a northern station Scapa Flow was chosen for the main base of the British Grand Fleet even though it was also unfortified. John Rushworth Jellicoe admiral of the Grand Fleet was constantly nervous about potential submarine or destroyer attacks on Scapa Flow and the base was reinforced with minefields artillery and concrete barriers starting in 1914. These fears were borne out when German U-boats twice attacked British ships in Scapa Flow though the attacks themselves did no damage. The first by U-18 took place in November 1914; but the sub was rammed by a trawler searching for submarines while it was trying to enter Scapa Flow causing the submarine to flee and then sink. 12mo 100 pages. ‎1935 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF ONE MAN'S DESPERATE DEPRESSION ERA JOB AT ONE OF THE MOST REMOTE PLACES IN AMERICA‎

‎CAPE SARICHEF ALASKA. Good. 1935. On offer is an interesting original 1935 manuscript diary handwritten by a hard working single young man named George R. Wilson we believe who lived somewhere near Saginaw or Flint Michigan but whose diary reveals an utterly unique experience of working at one of the most remote jobs on the planet. Rather sparsely written with about one third of the diary having entries George wrote of his attempts to find work in 1935 at the height of the Depression Era and the temporary jobs he managed to get. He worked for the Michigan Unemployment Census the Emerging Relief Administration the Durant Hotel as a house detective the Federal Housing Administration and had other odd jobs. He carefully noted in the diary the number of hours he worked and the salary he earned. But it is George's good fortune to receive a job offer July 4th when he received a letter from Ketchikan asking if he would accept a position as 2nd assistant at the Scotch Gap Lighthouse in Alaska at a salary of $1560. per annum. The Cape Sarichef Light was the most western in the Northern hemisphere as well as the most isolated. The station closed from Dec 1st to March 1st because the Bering Sea was frozen. Because of the isolation civilians who worked there were given a full year vacation after 3 years of duty and the Coast Guard members were rotated after one year. In 1933 it was said that one of the keepers had a breakdown because of the isolation. Only a few trappers could get through to the station in the harsh winter months. On July 17 the author notes 'July 17 Rec'd letter from Ketchikan stating I had been nominated for 2nd ass't at Cape Sarichef also finger print form.' On July 28 the author left Flint MI for Bellingham Washington where he boarded the SS "North King" for Cape Sarichef on August 1. He made many stops along the way and noted these and the route in his diary. He occasionally worked loading canned salmon on the ship. On Aug 6th he was given the oath of office by the Captain of the tender "Hemlock". While anchored off Kodiak the author made the following entry: 'Aug 14.Anchored off Kodiak at 6:00 AM. Tied up at cannery about 1:00 PM. Visited Russian Orthodox Church. Kodiak was settled about 1774. Talked with Charles Madsen noted hunter game warden and guide. A Kodiac bear was killed 5 miles from Kodiak which was 13 1/2 ft long and weighed 2255 lb. A bear killed by Madsen was 5 ft around the neck. The way we came to Kodiak is about 1700 miles from Bellingham.' After a trip of three weeks the author arrived at Cape Sarichef on August 21st: Left Scotch Gap at 11:30 AM and reached Cape Sarichef about 1:30 PM. A.I. Sutherland keeper George C Francis 1st Asst. We are in Lat 54 35' 50" and long. 164 56' 02". This light was built in 1903. It is a 3rd order light gas mantle and is 185 ft above high tide. Lee Harpole was keeper leaving today. Sutherland gets $1800 and Francis $1620. After his arrival at Cape Sarichef the author made occasional short entries. He wrote of: the arrival of the mail boat "Star" on various days; receiving a mackinaw and other clothing he had ordered; visits from two trappers in the area Fred Webber and Exel Samuelson; seeing caribou once seeing 62 at one time; trapping foxes; closing the station at midnight on Nov 30th not to reopen until Mar 1; picking up mail at Scotch Gap; a few daily activities - getting hair cut washing taking pictures eating lbs of flaxseed; On Dec 29 the author made the following entry: Began misty rain about 3 PM.
