GEORGE NAPIER TOMLIN, RN REAR ADMIRAL
1914 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY BY THE COMMANDER OF THE FAMED AND NOTORIOUS HMS AGINCOURT FROM DETERMINED MOBILIZATION TO THE DANGEROUS NORTH SEA
HMS AGINCOURT THE NORTH SEA. Very Good. 1914. On offer is a superb relic of World War I and British naval history being a manuscript diary kept by the Commander of the Royal Navy's famed dreadnought the 'HMS Agincourt' at the beginning of WWI during her assignment as part of the British Grand Fleet in the North Sea engaging the German Kaiserliche Marine's High Seas Fleet. This diary begins July 29th with a call to mobilize and then there is the immediate outbreak of the war in August 1914 through to December 1914 very neatly written in ink with one photograph some sketches cruising orders and newspaper cuttings. This important historical first hand account was handwritten by George Napier Tomlin RN Rear Admiral 1875 - 1947 gives first hand content and detailed insight into the workings of the British Grand Fleet and documents the confusion that existed in the immediate days after the war broke out on August 5th 1914. Tomlin's original assignment as he notes on the 30th is aboard the HMS Majestic. Tomlin writes regarding the appointment as one: 'which I look upon as an insult. If there is to be a fight I want to be in a fighting ship & not in one recovered from a scrap heap'. Excitingly his assignment changes and he is one of the first aboard a newly 'commandeered' Turkish ship renamed Agincourt. Collectors and historians of the First World War will also delight knowing that diaries unlike letters were not censored. The British had concentrated their Fleet at Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands and 'HMS Agincourt' was sailing back and forth to the Bight of Heligoland to engage the Kaiser's Fleet. Much can be learned about life aboard a British warship as the journal is replete with details about navigational positions fleet details officers' names and positions courts martial administered etc. Much anxiety existed about German submarines and mines and Tomlin's drawings elaborate on mines in the North Sea as well as the British Fortification with wire nets of the Harbour of Buncrana Ireland. Frequent reference is made to the C in C Commander in Charge Jellicoe who had his headquarters on the 'HMS Iron Duke'. The diary also shows the concerns about Zeppelins and mentions their appearance. Visits aboard the 'HMS Agincourt' by 1st Lord Winston Churchill were recorded on September 17 while the ship was anchored at Loch Ewe in Scotland. Finally Tomlin mentions the sinking of various British and German ships among them the German U-18 and the German Battle Cruiser 'SMS Scharnhorst' by British Ships off the Falkland Islands where the famous German Admiral Graf Spee met his fate. Political Background: In 1904 in response to the build-up of the German Kaiserliche Marine's High Seas Fleet it was decided that a northern base was needed to control the entrances to the North Sea. Originally Rosyth was considered for the base and then Invergordon at Cromarty Firth but construction in both places was delayed leaving them largely unfortified by the time of the First World War. Scapa Flow was used many times for exercises in the years leading up to the war. When the time came for the fleet to move to a northern station Scapa Flow was chosen for the main base of the British Grand Fleet even though it was also unfortified. John Rushworth Jellicoe admiral of the Grand Fleet was constantly nervous about potential submarine or destroyer attacks on Scapa Flow and the base was reinforced with minefields artillery and concrete barriers starting in 1914. These fears were borne out when German U-boats twice attacked British ships in Scapa Flow though the attacks themselves did no damage. The first by U-18 took place in November 1914; but the sub was rammed by a trawler searching for submarines while it was trying to enter Scapa Flow causing the submarine to flee and then sink. 12mo 100 pages. GEORGE R WILSON
1914 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF ONE FAMILY'S TIME SPENT ON THE EASTERN SHORE OF PUGET SOUND MANNING THE WEST POINT LIGHT STATION
WEST POINT LIGHT STATION PUGET SOUND WASHINGTON. Very Good. 1914. On offer is an interesting original 1914 manuscript diary handwritten by George R. Wilson father to Cliff and Ralph husband to May and the lighthouse keeper at the West Point Light Station or the Discovery Park Lighthouse a 23 foot high lighthouse located at West Point which juts out into Puget Sound near Fort Lawton and Seattle at the northern most extent of Elliott Bay. It was opened in November of 1881 with a fourth-order Fresnel lens and was the first manned light station on the Sound and was illuminated with kerosene lamp until 1926. The full 360 page diary details the daily life of this family from the mundane chores mail sent and received visitors raising chickens and ducks selling the eggs and occasionally the meat to supplement George's salary which varied month to month but averaged around $58 dollars a month. Life at a lighthouse could be very quiet but storms and occasional events are al recorded such as when the body of a person identified as "Shaw" was pulled from the sea at the "Point" what Wilson calls the lighthouse throughout this diary on Wednesday Jan. 21 shows that it was not all relaxation and boredom. On Jan. 23 Wilson met with "Mr. Beck on Swiftsure Lightship" which was the last light station established along the Washington coast. HISTORICAL NOTES: Fort Lawton was a U.S. Army post located in the Magnolia neighborhood of Seattle. Most of the property was turned over to the city of Seattle and dedicated as Discovery Park in 1973. Fort Lawton officially closed on September 14 2011. Lightship 83 also called Swiftsure was built for the U.S. Lighthouse Service as the Blunts Reef California lightship. She is the oldest surviving example of an American lightship with its original marine steam engine. She weathered severe storms and heavy damage from ramming by a steam schooner during her first six years of service. She later rescued 155 survivors from a stranded coastal steamer. Sails were used to help keep her on station in the early year. Wilson and family received a lot of newspapers magazines and catalogues from many different parts of the country during their stay at West Point. On Feb. 20th the architect and a carpenter visited the lighthouse for repairs. The family had the use of a motor launch which they used to visit Seattle and Ballard annexed in 1909 by Seattle on occasion. Most of their travel was for pleasure; the purchasing of supplies was done by hired car. George kept meticulous accounts of all sales and expenses in this diary as well as the weather. The rear of the book has printed address pages with 50 or so names and addresses. The diary also accounts for every penny that the family spent while serving at this lighthouse. Wilson's service at West Point ended on Aug. 15th 1914 with an entry reading "Mr. Otto Hins came P.M. to relieve me and we met him at Ballard with launch and took him to Point." Wilson and family then took the Great Northern Railroad to Traverse City Michigan to their new life. The diary is bound in canvas backed tan cloth wraps and has printed calendars postage weights and measures and other useful information. GEORGE R WILSON
1935 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF ONE MAN'S DESPERATE DEPRESSION ERA JOB AT ONE OF THE MOST REMOTE PLACES IN AMERICA
CAPE SARICHEF ALASKA. Good. 1935. On offer is an interesting original 1935 manuscript diary handwritten by a hard working single young man named George R. Wilson we believe who lived somewhere near Saginaw or Flint Michigan but whose diary reveals an utterly unique experience of working at one of the most remote jobs on the planet. Rather sparsely written with about one third of the diary having entries George wrote of his attempts to find work in 1935 at the height of the Depression Era and the temporary jobs he managed to get. He worked for the Michigan Unemployment Census the Emerging Relief Administration the Durant Hotel as a house detective the Federal Housing Administration and had other odd jobs. He carefully noted in the diary the number of hours he worked and the salary he earned. But it is George's good fortune to receive a job offer July 4th when he received a letter from Ketchikan asking if he would accept a position as 2nd assistant at the Scotch Gap Lighthouse in Alaska at a salary of $1560. per annum. The Cape Sarichef Light was the most western in the Northern hemisphere as well as the most isolated. The station closed from Dec 1st to March 1st because the Bering Sea was frozen. Because of the isolation civilians who worked there were given a full year vacation after 3 years of duty and the Coast Guard members were rotated after one year. In 1933 it was said that one of the keepers had a breakdown because of the isolation. Only a few trappers could get through to the station in the harsh winter months. On July 17 the author notes 'July 17 Rec'd letter from Ketchikan stating I had been nominated for 2nd ass't at Cape Sarichef also finger print form.' On July 28 the author left Flint MI for Bellingham Washington where he boarded the SS "North King" for Cape Sarichef on August 1. He made many stops along the way and noted these and the route in his diary. He occasionally worked loading canned salmon on the ship. On Aug 6th he was given the oath of office by the Captain of the tender "Hemlock". While anchored off Kodiak the author made the following entry: 'Aug 14.Anchored off Kodiak at 6:00 AM. Tied up at cannery about 1:00 PM. Visited Russian Orthodox Church. Kodiak was settled about 1774. Talked with Charles Madsen noted hunter game warden and guide. A Kodiac bear was killed 5 miles from Kodiak which was 13 1/2 ft long and weighed 2255 lb. A bear killed by Madsen was 5 ft around the neck. The way we came to Kodiak is about 1700 miles from Bellingham.' After a trip of three weeks the author arrived at Cape Sarichef on August 21st: Left Scotch Gap at 11:30 AM and reached Cape Sarichef about 1:30 PM. A.I. Sutherland keeper George C Francis 1st Asst. We are in Lat 54 35' 50" and long. 164 56' 02". This light was built in 1903. It is a 3rd order light gas mantle and is 185 ft above high tide. Lee Harpole was keeper leaving today. Sutherland gets $1800 and Francis $1620. After his arrival at Cape Sarichef the author made occasional short entries. He wrote of: the arrival of the mail boat "Star" on various days; receiving a mackinaw and other clothing he had ordered; visits from two trappers in the area Fred Webber and Exel Samuelson; seeing caribou once seeing 62 at one time; trapping foxes; closing the station at midnight on Nov 30th not to reopen until Mar 1; picking up mail at Scotch Gap; a few daily activities - getting hair cut washing taking pictures eating lbs of flaxseed; On Dec 29 the author made the following entry: Began misty rain about 3 PM. Sent following night let. to May: "Everything fine. No mail out since September. Your mail received". Cost - $2.21.' Overall G.; Manuscript; 32mo - over 4" - 5" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF GEORGE R. GEORGE VERNON PORTER, USN
1920 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DECK LOG AND SCRAPBOOK OF A YOUNG NAVY SEAMAN ABOARD A RENOWNED AND ONE DAY LEGENDARY BUT ILL FATED DESTROYER - THE USS BORIE
ABOARD THE USS BORIE. Good. 1920. On offer is a sensational privately-kept deck log and scrapbook of the USS BORIE DD-215 compiled by 20 year old sailor George Vernon Porter. It was kept from the time of the ship's commissioning in 1920 launched 1919 all the way through the end of this sailor's tour on the ship in 1921. The BORIE had an incredible history. Starting in 1920 she conducted a round the world cruise punctuated by fighting in the Black Sea during the Russian Civil War.Then she travelled and served in China During WWII she distinguished herself in near hand-to-hand combat with U-405. History records that the combatants were so close a knife thrown by a BORIE crew member killed a German U-boat sailor. Her Commanding Officer earned the Navy Cross for their brave actions which resulted in the eventual sinking of both U-405 and BORIE. The sailor who kept this log was one of the original crew and kept nearly day-by-day notes on the location and employment of the ship. We note a typed letter signed by his father dated April 1918 giving permission for his 17 year old son to enlist in the Navy. He mentions that being a former past Commander of the Spanish War Veterans he would appreciate any consideration. Adding great depth to the breadth of this log are the copious amounts of artwork he drew and sometimes tipped in including period cartoons scenes he saw during their time overseas and more. He additionally kept well over 100 "scraps" ranging from newspaper clippings to postcards to foreign paperwork and more! Some of the documents are very uncommon and include original Russian Civil War documents official passes etc. many from places and times no longer in existence. Whitehall New York Wentworth New Hampshire. Good with no dust jacket. 1882. Cloth. Some diaries we read are so sad that your heart really goes out to them; well this is one of those diaries. Our author George W. Bennett at the time this diary is written 1882 lives in Whitehall New York and is a very sick young man. He's 29 and has moved there from Wentworth New Hampshire and has a job selling "machines". What kind of machines one is not quite sure but they are big but small enough to load several in a wagon for his selling trips. He also has a very sick mother back in New Hampshire and at one point makes it back just in time to tend to her right before she dies. In his diary he's constantly saying how low he is and how he wishes to go home but alas he has to work just to survive. He also takes a break from selling his "machines" and heads off to work at Lake George taking care of the boats for the tourists to use. It is a very interesting piece of Americana full of densely written entries. Here are some snippets: "I am most sick. It snows hard. I've got no sleigh so I stay at home. GEORGE W GUILD
1845 - 1850 HANDWRITTEN FIRST HAND MANUSCRIPT OF THE MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR AND LEDGER OF A BUSY PROVIDENCE RHODE ISLAND MERCHANT AND JUSTICE OF THE PEACE
Providence Rhode Island RI. Good. 1845. On offer is a remarkable historic handwritten manuscript relic of Rhode Island's involvement in the Mexican War and regional commerce being the journal and ledger of George W. Guild who was a soldier in the Mexican War a merchant and a Justice of the Peace in Providence Rhode Island. This 266 page hand numbered book was used from 1845 - 1850 as a ledger for Mr. Guild's prosperous business. He tended to do most of his invoices notes sales and orders on the right side of the open book. The left side was saved for other notes relating to store operations. It is here on these mostly blank pages than George Guild wrote his Mexican War travels and adventures very soon upon his return from service. There are about a dozen pages of written narrative detailing travel vessels conditions battles brothers-in-arms etc and then more pages of point form notes possible chapter headings etc. It seems without doubt that Guild is documenting his immediate memories with an intent to later flesh out for either a book or memoir. A noted dated 1850 in the book confirms this as Guild makes mention of the cost of publishing 100 copies of a 100 page book at a cost of $1.00 per book. Students of the time period will know that when Congress declared war against Mexico on May 13 1846 volunteers in large numbers enlisted to fight against her. About this period the movement of General Taylor or "Old Rough and Ready" as his men called him from Corpus Christi to the relief of Fort Brown on the Rio Grande River was the theme of general conversation throughout the state. Meetings were called by the commanders of the various military companies after the battles of "Palo Alto" and "Resaca-de-la-Palma" for the purpose of offering their services to the government. The act passed by Congress to increase the strength of the army by adding ten additional regiments to be enlisted for the war defined the "quota" of Rhode Island to be one company of infantry. Now there were four companies in process of organization at this time but only one could be mustered into service. In January 1847 the Legislature of Rhode Island made an appropriation of $2500.00 for volunteers for the Mexican War. To Captain Joseph S. Pitman and Lieutenant John S. Slocum was assigned the duty of preparing the company intended for the field. The Second-Lieutenancy was subsequently filled by the appointment of John Glackin of Woonsocket R. I. George W. Guild was appointed First Sergeant. Frequent changes were made in the "non-commissioned" officers as their various qualifications developed. The following is the "roster" after entering the valley of Mexico. His narrative is first hand and well expressed. This was a fascinating time in Rhode Island history and this rare journal is a unique first hand original relic of that time. George W Howe
1890s ARCHIVE OF THREE 3 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARIES BY AMERICAN CIVIL WAR VETERAN RAILROAD BOOSTER AND PROMINENT MEMBER OF A MICHIGAN COMMUNITY
On offer is a group of three diaries containing a treasure trove of local residents and organizations written by George W. Howe a veteran of the American Civil War and prominent member of his local community. <br /><br />The diaries are dated 1894 1895 and 1897 and measure 5.75 inches by 3.5 inches 7 inches by 3.25 inches and 7 inches by 3.25 inches respectively. All diaries are in good condition contain 365 pages plus memoranda and are 100 percent complete. <br /><br />Howe was born in 1844 and following the Civil War lived his life in Port Huron Michigan. He passed away in 1936 at age 91 or 92. Records show that he was married and his diary makes reference to a girl May and a boy Barlow. Interestingly Howe's 1894 diary is recorded in a notebook printed for 1889. Inside he stroked out the date each day and substituted the correct date for 1894 using a small calendar he pasted into the front cover. <br /><br />There is a record of Howe owning a newspaper prior to the Civil War but following the war it seems that he was deeply engaged in getting the railroad built between Port Huron and East Saginaw and up into Michigan's Thumb. He not only created subscription papers for gathering financial support for the proposed railway he also helped get information posted to the local newspaper and participated in the survey crew between Fort Gratiot and Lexington. <br /><br />Howe has a number of journal entries detailing loans and mortgages suggesting that this was part of his business activities. In fact his diaries are chock full of many many business transactions ranging from these loans to construction and repair activities and property rentals: <br /><br />"$70 interest due to M F Charleton to back interest. Mrs. Belle of mortgage $1034.13 Nov 13/94 Interest 8%" May 13 1894.<br /><br />"Barlow being at home AH thinks we can get on without Henry. He is willn to pay R E French bal of $4.00. Leaves bal of $1.23 I gave R E French ck for $4.10 bal leaves $1.13 I gave R E French 20¢ or 50¢ and got Old balance claimed of $3.80" September 22 1894. "Rent of Chalmers House by Rogers: April $1.50 Pd / May $1.50 Pd / June $1.50 Pd / July $1.50 Pd / $4.50 Cr $4.00 / Bal due Aug 1st / 50¢ settled later" September 11 1897. <br /><br />During the American Civil War Howe served in the 29th Michigan Infantry Regiment. When he mustered out he held the rank of 1st Sergeant. Following the war a number of organizations were formed to assist veterans and enable them to maintain contact with each other. Among these was the Grand Army of the Republic GAR which would grow to become the largest and most influential of such fraternal organizations. It also rapidly became entwined with partisan politics effectively becoming associated with the Republican party. Howe was very active in the GAR and the GAR's successor organization the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War named their Port Huron branch after him George W Howe Camp #9. <br /><br />He attended the 1897 National Encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic in Buffalo and includes some newspaper clippings of the event: <br /><br />"Took in the Parade of veterans and ex-prisoners of war most have seen tough times battle-scarred . . . I saw corks pulled freely liquor was being again in order. They had comfortable quarters and berths" August 24 1897. <br /><br />Howe was active in the American Republican Party and included in the 1896 diary is a form recording the votes in the Republican primary election in the Eight Ward showing the vote results of each candidate. No mention however of how he came into possession of them. <br /><br />". . . At Primary from 4:00 to close. Not much show for Bliss" July 30 1896. <br /><br />In addition to the GAR and the Republican Party Howe was active in several other community organizations such as the Masonic Lodge and a local fishing club. Through these various groups he had wide contacts in the community. Hundreds of local names are mentioned in his pages. For a local historian the pages of these diaries are a goldmine of information. The many named contacts would provide any genealogist excellent threads to follow in constructing family relationships.<br /><br />Keywords: George w. GEORGE W OLIPHANT
1918 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT WWI DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY AN INTREPID SAILOR DETAILING A FRAUGHT FILLED CROSSING OF THE ATLANTIC
ASEA ABOARD THE USS MOCCASIN. Good. 1918. On offer is a super original ship board manuscript diary handwritten by as inscribed 'George W. Oliphant S. S. Moccasin for formerly the German passenger liner "Prinz Joachim." Father: Charles H. Oliphant 169 Danforth St. Portland Maine." George does a great job as a diarist if a little sporadic at times bringing the action aboard ship to startling reality in his descriptive entries. The page a day style diary has 100 or so entries most of those dated February 7th through April 26th with few other entries before and after starts upon enlistment but before he can join he is trying to get some kind of license and having to go through the courts to do so. Likely regarding his rating in the Navy. The diary goes a long way to show the danger and at times dire hours for the ships and men at sea who served in support of the fighting elements and the people suffering the War in Europe. To that end this ship was a refrigerated cargo ship delivering frozen food to Bordeaux France and the very first trip out there is trouble for the crew and ship which while makes for exciting reading the reality for these brave sailors near fatal. Here are some snippets: 1918 "January 18th Called on Inspectors who agreed to give me my license. My argument evidently worked." "January 30th Went to New York and enrolled as officer in Naval Reserve as Ensign. Ordered uniform and returned on night train." "February 7th Called on Mr. _____and with whom had lunch. Advised him that I could not consider Montpelier job without notifying firm. Decided to drop entire matter until my return from war
Took three o'clock for NY. Arriving late. Staid at Saint George Brooklyn
.Reported for duty at 4:30 P.M. at N. A. K. to Captain Beckwith. Moved to Hunt's for night and went to theatre with them where we saw Wm Gillette." "February 16th Called on Bowman and advised him that for T.'s sake an my families I would drop the matter about the license tho I felt that I should in justice to myself clear my name of any imputation of impropriety in case such an opinion had been given credence by the Bureau owing to Wilson's jealousy and circulation of false stories about my school. Went out with York of Coast Trans. Line with whom I hope to go across
." "February 17th Called on Capt. Thompson and among other things insisted either that he tell Cap. Beckwith of the status of my license or that I do so. He said I might be disenrolled. I told him that I would prefer to be disenrolled to holding a commission under my misunderstanding as to my qualifications. He finally agreed to tell B. himself tomorrow. I advised him that I intended to carry my appeal to Kedfried which he seemed glad to hear." "February 20th 9:00 A.M. Reported on board S. S. Moccasin Captain Powers commanding and then took 24 hours liberty. Went to Anderson and ordered coat. That night with Em. To Kenney's Vaudeville and home to Hunt's at 2 A.M." "February 25th & 26th Mr. Sullivan Executive officer Lieut reported and assigned to me duties of assistant to Executive
.Stood 24 hour watch 12 P.M. S. S. Moccasin went into commission. John A. Meagler Ensign reported for duty from USS Jupiter Trenton N. J." "March 4th On duty all day rigging booms etc. etc. 4:10 P.M. Called Police Headquarters reg. theft of pitcher and having found finger prints on saloon rail. Detective appeared an hour later but could do nothing. 8 P.M. Lieut. Goodphile came aboard finger print expert from Police Headquarters and "fixed" prints which were to be photographed tomorrow. Stood watch of Meagler from 6-12 midnight sick. Rain snow warm." "March 11th 9:20 A.M. got under way 4 tugs assisting for trial trip to adjust compasses etc. Stood out 5 miles E. of Ambrose Channel L. S. I was on duty on bridge from 9:20 to 4:30 when we docked South side pier 6 Bush G Terminal. Hit telegraph on head first time after watching old man. Evening Murdock and I took in sights. Flying sign "S" and recognition signal." "March 23rd 1:30 P.M. We left Bush Docks about 9:30 and made way for Ambrose Ch. L. V. the pt. of departure for the convoy to consist of 39 vessels. Formation made at 4 o'clock beautiful day cool but clear. 39 vessels in 6 columns stretching for miles with cruiser De Monies in lead of No. 3. Col. and we 2nd in No. 2 Col. Frenchman leading F'chman dropped out leaving us in lead. Captain gave me 4 to 8 watch Murdock 1 -4 Hennesey and Ryan 8-12." "March 26th On duty at 4 A.M. All alone on the bridge of a 7000 ton ship and the Atlantic for so far as we could tell not a ship was near us. Weather cleared and at 5 I discerned two lights one forward one aft. Whether tramps or neutrals or part of convoy I could not tell. Called old man. Held course and at 5:30 the clouds lifted and scattered all over horizon 20 miles away. I picked up 12 ships. A welcome sight. I took my first sight for Longitude and came within 4 miles of old ____." In the morning 20 ships were with them but they also discovered a leak and had to work hard to repair it. Said it was 15 feet below water line and this is when all the excitement begins. "March 30th Water gaining. A seam is also spreading and you hear the water rushing in and falling in that below. An awful sound to one who realizes its seriousness. A storm might prove fatal to the safety of the ship. Captain suggested the Azores as a possibility." EDITOR'S NOTES: The Captain asked him to keep quiet about the seriousness of the leak but it was very distressing and the storm was getting worse. And he's still standing watch alone. They find out in the morning that they are now 3 miles off course and still in danger he writes: "Wind howling shrieking seas up to bridge 33 feet not a ship in sight. I went to supper when half way there we took a terrific roll 50 degrees and I was thrown clear of my chair for 15 feet hitting the dining table on my back in middle of room. As I passed made a grab for Exec's chair which came up by the roots. I landed on my shoulder beyond the table with another injury than a smashed thumb which the doc. fixed up. Just as I was returning to the bridge a boy came running up from engine room for doctor
." A 300 pound structure tore loose and flew across the engine room floor hurting several men and one was yelling that all the life boats were breaking loose. One man came near to going overboard. He says "We worked four hours griping in boats forty cowards shuddering and praying and 15 men doing the work." He goes on to say that the seas were enormous and towered above the bridge 15 feet. Says "It was the most awful experience of my life. I have seen storms and seas but none that compared with this." Finally on April 5th the wind dies down and they meet up with their convoy but not before they end up in the "Submarine Zone" with two messages received "War Warnings." "April 6th Nothing of note today tho the constant vigil and increasing strain is telling on everyone. The least bit of good news by wireless and there is good news only by comparison
." "April 7th The Des Moines still missing and in the heart of danger zone 300 miles from land. No lights for two nights no wireless no news." The next day he gets called to the bridge to send an SOS because the ship Cadillac was torpedoed and needs help. Thirty three ships now remained in the convoy. "April 14th The Cadillac ___to be one of our own convoy. Tanker whose position was first in sixth column. She was in sight of Northern ships in convoy when torpedoed and her guns were seen and heard working. 6 P.M. eight more destroyers joined us and by dark there were a total of ten circling around us shooting at their target suddenly stopping ready to blast off here or there whenever she might detect anything suspicious. They were like bloodhounds use to the wind poised ready to spring sniffing and listening for prey. Great stuff." The 4 x 6 inch diary is overall G. HISTORICAL NOTES: "USS Moccasin ID-1322 was a United States Navy refrigerated cargo ship in commission from 1918-1919. She was the third ship to carry her name. Moccasin was built as the German commercial passenger-cargo ship SS Prinz Joachim in 1903 at Flensburg Germany by Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft for the Hamburg America Line. When the United States entered World War I on the side of the Allied in April 1917 the United States Government seized her and placed her under the control of the United States Shipping Board for use during World War I. Renamed SS Moccasin she entered service as an American civilian cargo ship. Late in 1917 the United States Army chartered her. The U.S. Navy acquired Moccasin at New York City on 19 February 1918 for World War I use as a refrigerated cargo ship. She was assigned the naval registry Identification Number Id. No. 1322 and commissioned as USS Moccasin on 26 February 1918. SERVICE HISTORY: Assigned to the Naval Overseas Transportation Service Moccasin departed New York City on 14 March 1918 with a convoy for Europe arriving at Bordeaux France on 13 April to unload her cargo of frozen food. Moccasin continued to operate as a refrigerator ship making crossAtlantic runs to Europe from New York until she decommissioned on 2 June 1919. She was transferred to the United States Shipping Board the same day. She returned to commercial service as SS Moccasin later in her career being renamed SS Porto Rico."; Manuscript; 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF GEORGE W.
