In questo libro c'è molto: c'è la rappresentazione di importanti momenti della storia civile e privata dell'Italia tra le due guerre, c'è il difficile e aspro secondo dopoguerra, c'è l'attenzione minuta alle mode, alle abitudini e alle smanie di certa aristocrazia siciliana e internazionale, c'è la ricostruzione attraverso la memoria di numerosi protagonisti di episodi che finiscono col ricomporre le tessere di quel tempo, c'è perfino l'ammirazione del narratore per i personaggi intervistati, tutti amici, parenti, conoscenti, tutti di alto livello sociale.

Tra la fine dell'Ottocento e gli inizi del nuovo secolo, all'emigrazione economica si sovrappose e si mischiò anche quella politica e in particolare quella dei socialisti e degli anarchici in fuga dall'Italia di Crispi. Tra le diverse diaspore italiane, quella degli anarchici ebbe un ruolo del tutto particolare, caratterizzata da un'elevata mobilità circolare fatta, oltre che di militanti, anche di giornali, riviste, fogli unici e, con essi, editori, pubblicisti e redattori. È all'interno di questo contesto che si posiziona la figura di Roberto D'Angiò che potremmo definire come una sorta di «redattore errante». La sua attività politica ed editoriale infatti si sviluppa tra Italia, Egitto, Inghilterra, Uruguay e Argentina esprimendosi in italiano, spagnolo e francese, anche perché «pur cambiando l'idioma si parlava lo stesso linguaggio». Un segmento dell'esperienza dell'emigrazione politica di fine secolo che va ad aggiungersi ad un quadro storicamente complesso che privilegia un approccio transnazionale allo studio delle migrazioni e dei movimenti politici.
