‎PROCTER, Addison G‎

‎Lincoln and the Convention of 1860: An Address Before the Chicago Historical Society April 4 1918‎

‎Chicago: Chicago Historical Society 1918. Paperback. Small 4to. Stiff brown wrappers. 29pp. Frontispiece. Very good. Bit of slight edgewear and couple of small edge chips. Tight decent first edition of this address by the Emporia Kansas businessman born 1838 who at age 21 was the youngest delegate to this convention that nominated Abraham Lincoln for president. According to a biographical note concluding this essay "From 1861 to 1864 Mr. Procter was on a special mission to the Indian Territory a work demanding courage and discretion of a high order and which was especially appreciated by Secretary John P. Usher of Lincoln's cabinet." He later also attended the Republican conventions in 1912 and 1916. Accompanied by an Autograph Note Signed from Procter 1p 8" X 10" St. Joseph Michigan n.y. 1922 postal cancellation August 21. Addressed to "My Dear Mr. Hambrecht" George P. Hambrecht 1871-1943 noted Lincoln collector and founder of the Lincoln Fellowship of Wisconsin. Near fine. Original folds evident none weakened else remarkably clean and pristine. On lined notebook paper the elderly Procter carefully and laboriously pens a cordial note in vibrant blue fountain pen: "I have your letter of Aug 12th and note carefully all you say. I wait cheerfully for that paper 'till you return. I hope you may have a very pleasant trip and return a better American than ever if that is possible." Boldly signed. With original envelope addressed in Procter's hand. At Procter's death in 1925 he was apparently the last surviving delegate of the 1860 convention. MONAGHAN 2387. OAKLEAF 1130. ‎Jean Cocteau: A Life.‎

‎
Author Biography Arnaud Claude. Jean Cocteau: A Life. New Haven: Yale University Press 2016. First Printing of the First US Edition. A Fine tight copy in a Fine dust jacket. Unevenly respected easily hated almost always suspected of being inferior to his reputation Jean Cocteau has often been thought of as a jack-of-all-trades master of none. In this landmark biography Claude Arnaud thoroughly contests this characterization as he celebrates Cocteau's "fragile genius—a combination almost unlivable in art" but in his case so fertile. Arnaud narrates the life of this legendary French novelist poet playwright director filmmaker and designer who as a young man pretended to be a sort of a god but who died as a humble and exhausted craftsman. The author examines the nature of Cocteau's chameleon-like genius his romantic attachments his controversial politics and his intimate involvement with many of the century's leading artistic lights including Picasso Proust Hemingway Stravinsky and Tennessee Williams. 1019 pages with photographs.
Yale University Press, hardcover‎

‎Edith Margaret Libby‎

‎1935 Original Handwritten Diary by a College Student Spending a Busy Summer Working and Socializing in and around New York City‎

‎On offer is a wonderful diary by Edith Margaret Libby a college student spending the summer at her home in New Jersey and visiting New York during the Great Depression. Libby was a student at Central College in Fayette Missouri at the time of writing this diary. An inscription notes a second address in New Jersey across the river from New York City which appears to be Libby's home. It is likely that she is home on a summer break from college and her entries describe places and events in New York City.

She opens her journal noting a trip to see Les Miserables. In view of what was going to happen in a few short years she makes an interesting observation: "I'm glad I went. Its a picture to make one think and to be thankful that he doesn't live in an age of galleys and revolution tho we seem to have uprisings pretty close to the latter" July 23.

An entry on July 24 suggests that Libby was studying education with a plan to teach secondary school. "This morning I went to Columbia and got a library school catalogue. Their school sounds very good but it costs too much I'm afraid. Went to a class in the teaching of music appreciation in high schools."

The author describes some of the places she visited such as the Cathedral of St. John the Divine and the Art Museum. She also notes many of the comings and goings of her fellow students: "We dined out tonight walking down Broadway to 102nd st. To Old Algiers a very nice restaurant . . . We really enjoyed our meal there. And the food is delicious too. Its fun to eat out once in a while like that. I wish I could afford to do it oftener" July 24.

Libby had a job for the summer working as a maid. An earlier entry describes a letter she received from her college saying that she must give up either her scholarship or her student job as she can't have both. The pages flow in a detailed description of her daily life the people she interacts with and the many places she visits. She describes in detail a visit with family and friends to Palisades Park: "We all had a very large evening and a swell time. The only trouble was that it was too short. I'm glad that Norm went because that made it more fun for me. That boy is certainly good company. Butch is a lot of fun too but he is a little young yet" August 9.

The diary is recorded in a lined undated coil-top notebook. Measuring 5 inches by 4 inches it contains 178 pages and is 100 percent complete. The notebook is in very good condition and the handwriting is quite legible. This book provides a well-written engaging commentary on the daily life of Edith Margaret Libby. Full of rich detail it offers a social historian an excellent window into life in one of America's largest metropolitan areas during the Depression. hardcover‎

On offer is a fascinating diary written by a woman with a full social life in the United States during and immediately after the First World War. The author's name does not appear in the diary. Although her diary contains many gaps it still provides a clear picture of a woman who is actively engaged in her church in the Daughters of the American Revolution DAR and in many other aspects of life around her. The entries do not necessarily follow a chronological order but each is properly dated. The diary begins in 1917. "Florence gave me this book Christmas. Worn Out ' He . the gradual extension of federal government & lessening of state power" February 15 1923. This small 5-year diary measures 5.5 inches by 4.25 inches and contains 365 pages. It is about 15 to 20 percent complete. The front cover is detached and the back cover is only loosely attached. The binding is intact but the spine is damaged. The pages are intact and in good condition. The handwriting is legible. This diary offers a fine look into the life of an American woman during and after World War II and provides a wealth of detail regarding various social events of the time including DAR meetings and the names of individuals who attended. ; Manuscripts; 5.5" x 4.5"; 365 pages; Keywords: Mollie Cotton Smart; Marietta College; Daughters of the American Revolution; DAR; Frank Orren Lowden; AMERICANA; HANDWRITTEN; MANUSCRIPT; DOCUMENT; LETTER; AUTOGRAPH; WRITER; HAND WRITTEN; DOCUMENTS; SIGNED; LETTERS; MANUSCRIPTS; DIARY; DIARIES; JOURNALS; PERSONAL HISTORY; SOCIAL HISTORY; HISTORICAL; HOLOGRAPH; WRITERS; AUTOGRAPHS; PERSONAL; MEMOIR; MEMORIAL; ANTIQUITÉ CONTRAT; VÉLIN; DOCUMENT; MANUSCRIT; PAPIER ANTIKE; BRIEF; PERGAMENT; DOKUMENT; MANUSKRIPT; PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO; ATTO; VELINA; DOCUMENTO; MANOSCRITTO; CARTA ANTIGÜEDAD; HECHO; VITELA; DOCUMENTO; MANUSCRITO; PAPEL . hardcover‎
