This is another paragraph From Publishers Weekly: Bourke The Burning of Bridget Cleary writes a sensitive biography of writer Brennan who came to the U.S. from Ireland as a teenager her father was the first Irish ambassador to the U.S. and in 1949 in her early 30s joined the New Yorker to write about women's fashion. Tiny fiercely intelligent and impeccably groomed Brennan was cherished by her colleagues. William Maxwell a close friend edited her stories--mainly fictionalized accounts of her Irish childhood which he greatly admired--for the magazine. She also wrote a Talk of the Town column under the pseudonym The Long-Winded Lady. Yet behind the archly sophisticated persona Bourke writes was a fragile alienated woman who following a failed marriage to fellow writer St. Clair McKelway drifted into an eccentric middle age and serious mental breakdown before leaving the New Yorker. She died in an obscure nursing home in 1993. "Burnet's</strong></em> vacations were spent chiefly in Hamilton where the duchess engaged him in putting in order all the papers relating to her father's and uncle's political careers. Lauderdale who had his own reasons for anxiety as to the light which might be cast upon transactions in which he had himself been engaged no sooner heard of this than he sent for Burnet to come to court that he might give him all the informa¬tion in his power. The 'Memoirs of the Dukes of Hamilton' Burnet's first historical work was published in 1676 actually 1677. His investigations led in a curious way to a reconciliation between Hamilton and the court. Among the papers which he ex¬amined were found undoubted claims of the family upon the crown for satisfaction of which Hamilton consented to concur in the court measures. This was 1671". DNB In Burnet's Preface to "Memoirs" he states one of the reasons for undertak¬ing this work saying "And particularly I wondered to find James Duke of Hamilton represented to the World with such foul and base Characters as if he had been a Monster both for Ingratitude and Treachery though he had laid down his Life for the King and involved his Estate in vast Debts for His Service. It seemed to me the great¬est Injustice in the world that one who served his Prince and his Country so long and so faithfully and sealed all with his blood should not only be deprived of the Honour due to his Memory but that a company of ignorant and impudent Slanders should do what they could to attaint his Blood and Family by the black Imputations they have cast on him and that this should pass current without any Vindications." 1855 Original Handwritten Notebook and Relic of Yale Scholarship by a Prominent 19th Century American Academic
Yale University Olivet College. Good with no dust jacket. 1855. Hardcover. On offer is a terrific collection of early writings from John Haskell Hewitt a leading early American classical scholar. This 1855 journal is a series of reflections on sermons and lectures that Hewitt attended as a student at Yale University: "The theme was the duties of life in relation to divine providence. The speaker divided the subject into 3 general heads. 1st What is understood by Providence. Secondly Duty of Consenting to that Providence. Thirdly Duty of Submitting to that Providence" pp. 18-19. "There are in every science certain rudiments of first principles on which all others depend and from which others proceed. In every concern it is well to keep in view the rudiments. In the Legislature the Constitution is looked to in Navigation the compass. The same is true in Religion. There are certain fundamental principles in this which must be regards" pp. 28-29. His loose-leaf notes date at least until the late 1870s. Some are on the letterhead of Olivet College showing him as Acting President which date then to 1877 at the earliest when he was so appointed. They cover a wide range of subjects. Many appear to be notes for talks or lectures. "A History as has been shown is philosophy teaching by example . First Colonial Congress in NY Oct 7 1765 9 Colonies 28 delegates Agreed on Declaration of Rights." One group of notes has a page dedicated to each of several American states many referring to the early history of the relevant state especially vis-a-vis independence. Hewitt was born in 1835. He entered Yale University in 1855 the year this journal was kept. After his graduation Hewitt stayed at Yale serving as a librarian there. In 1865 he accepted a teaching position in Olivet College in Michigan. In 1882 the president of Williams College in Massachusetts and a friend of Hewitts from Yale Franklin Carter offered Hewitt a prestigious professorship in ancient languages. Hewitt accepted serving Williams College in various capacities for the rest of his life. He became Professor Emeritus in 1909. He passed away in 1920 at the age of 85. This small notebook measures 6.25 inches by 7.5 inches and contains 50 pages. It is about 90 percent complete. The cover is in good condition as are the binding and pages. The handwriting is legible. Accompanying this notebook is a collection of some 108 pages of loose-leaf notes. For an historian this is an outstanding look into the thinking and writing of a man recognized as a leading scholar in 19th century America. In the afternoon I took my skates and going onto the ice at the foot of Grove Street I put on my skates and skated down as far as the Colts Freight Depot. Finding the wind trying to my eyes I stayed but a short time. There were a great many persons on the ice. Several boys were pushing girls upon sleds. There were some ladies skating. My nephew skated down to Wetherfield Cove near the Prison and back. Wednesday February 16th The paper contained an account of the arrest of Dr. Louis P. Brockett formerly of the firm of Brockett & Hutchinson of this city for forgery to a large amount. Monday March 14th In the morning manservant John refused to do some work which he was told to do and I gave him notice to leave. A secretary we believe who employs shorthand throughout the 95% filled diary which makes for very intriguing reading. While she is rather open in regular cursive one can only imagine some of her perhaps more intimate entries and more cutting comments she is sometimes catty. We also learn she went on picnics the different plays she's in taking lessons a fellow she likes named Billy a man asking her to go to the beach sometime and her telling him off life with her parents and that she plays basketball and goes to the gymnasium regularly for theatrical rehearsals. Talented enough at piano she gives lessons her first love is the stage and she tries out for a number over the year; when she finds out her part she is outraged: 'Went to see Mr. Earnest and he gave me the part of a Negro mammy ah

Miss Gerz in general is not a happy person though for the most part though she is surrounded by friends has dates goes to nice restaurants and sees shows and does get parts in productions. She suffers from headaches feels low and bemoans her luck: 'No one called. Guess our phone has forgotten how to ring.' Eeyore has nothing on Emma Gerz. She has a large circle of friends through clubs and such and there appears to be a big connection with the German community as most of the people she mentions have Germanic last names. She moves about Los Angeles almost daily as she attends 'Masquerade' exercises climbing Figueroa hill gives piano lessons going to the Wallis Dramatic School and much much more. Fascinating look at this intriguing young woman's life in Los Angeles with the back drop of the early motion picture business happening all around her. 1925-1926 Letters from a Globetrotter Volume 1 Written for Members of the Round-The-World Society: Real Letters with Stamps Postmarks and Cancels
Arctic Europe North Africa: Round-The-World Society. Very Good. 1925. Full-Leather. On offer is an amazing vintage book of letters from 1925 to 1926. One of only a handful still in circulation "Letters from a Globetrotter" is a travelogue in the form of a series of subscription letters written by Elmer D. Raymond founder and president of the Round-the-World Society. Included in the book are approximately 150 pages describing Raymond's voyages photo plates a fold-out map of the world and approximately 140 real stamps all with postmarks dated 1925 and 1926. The return address of the letters is the Round-The-World Society in New York NY. There are more than 45 letters contained within this book each addressed to Mrs. Harriet H. Hale of New Haven Connecticut. The letters include stamps with postmarks and cancels on the front some letters with one stamp and some with up to five or ten and about three pages of typed text inside. Every letter is titled eg "ON THE TRAIL OF BARENTS" and includes a location at the top before the greeting of "Dear Friend: -" In addition to the typed letters there is a sketch of a ship by Raymond himself and some 16 black and white plates with photographs capturing images from the various locations Raymond visited. The first 13 letters are not numbered but the 14th is labelled XXVII. All the letters that follow are similarly labelled with Roman numerals in sequence. Some appear to be missing--for example the numbers skip from XXX to XXXIII. The travelogue begins at the North Cape Norway where Raymond describes seeing Europe from where he sits: "There beyond the thick dull curtain of fog lies the most interesting and colorful continent of the world Europe." The author states that this is the first of his Arctic letters. He goes on to write from Greenland Bear Island Spitzbergen and the North Pole. Next he sails to Antwerp and visits various locations in Germany France and Monaco. Then he moves on to North Africa where he describes places including Tunisia Algeria and Morocco. The descriptions are colorful and entertaining and provide an interesting look at these various communities through the eyes of a man who is likely American or English. He writes of a visit to Ruisseau des Singes in Algeria saying "Some of the monkeys get so bold as to put their hands into our pockets searching for hidden peanuts. One of them finds a shiny coin and steals it. He climbs a tree and sits on a branch. Fingering the coin he examines it carefully." The letters conclude with a flight from Tangier to Gibraltar and a trip into Spain where the letters end with letter number LXIV: "A Bullfight in Seville". The leatherette two-hole binder measures 6" x 9". The screw posts used for binding are missing but could easily be replaced. There is some general wear to the leather. The letters map plates and stamps within are in great condition. This well-written detailed collection of letters paints a vivid picture of one mans travels from Norway to the North Pole and south to North Africa. The photo plates give us a beautiful visual of what Raymond describes with words. For a collector there is a wealth of stamps mailed to the United States from numerous fascinating locations. This is one of two volumes of "Letters from a Globetrotter" in our collection. A good only copy with wear to the spine tips bumping to the lower board corners and some dots of brown to the bottom of the front board. Interior is clean and unmarked other than the ghost of a previous bookstore price erased at the top of the ffep. The book opens widely at the half title page but the binding is solid as are the hinges. The unclipped jacket is much better - clean and bright with minimal edgewear. 282 pp. indexed black and white photo gathering at the center. PARIS FRANCE. Good. 1928. On offer is a charming original manuscript dairy handwritten by a young British we believe woman in Paris France employed to teach English at the Lycee April 21st to August 22nd 1928. While the author's name is unknown even a casual read reveals the woman as each day is a complete daily record of everything she did from when she woke up until she went to bed including details of her duties where she went lessons and daily duties what she wore and even some 'insider' school politics or drama etc. making for a fascinating very detailed account of her experience at the Lycee in Paris. But much more than that the writer is an enthusiastic tourist too doing the French experience to the ultimate in her free time and describing it all in sparkling narrative. Historians and researchers of Paris in 1928 will acknowledge that the City of Light was at the epicentre of critical literature and art and the ascending star of post World War I Europe. The 7 x almost 5 inch leather notebook has some wear and top and bottom spine loss to the covers and the occasional marking where she kept flowers between the pages and some pages are loose but all complete. 1938 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A GREAT FALLS MONTANA SINGLE DAD WHO WORKS HARD TEACHING HIS SON THE MANLY ARTS OF SHOOTING HUNTING TREATING SKINS AND READING BOOKS
GREAT FALLS MONTANA MT. Very Good. 1938. On offer is an interesting original 1938 manuscript diary handwritten by an unidentified man living with his son Bob in Great Falls Montana. While the author is unknown there are many clues that would undoubtedly allow local researchers to learn his identity. His birthday is on January 21st and a casual reading suggests he is a widower or divorced as there are many mentions of his son but never a mother. A woman named Sue sees the boy a fair bit but her role is never detailed. He and son Bob 11 years old on April 2nd spend many of their free times hunting working on cowhides trips to the Falls hunting bullets at the Sand Hills target shooting and more. They are prodigious hunters and spend time dressing their kills and prepping or storing for food. Besides the everyday labours of rural living the writer has a job perhaps with a food or farm co-op as he mentions a call from the Spokane office and being asked to sell all their wheat he also calls on his tenants which we believe refers to tenant farmers. A very dedicated father inside the home too. He reads to Bob nearly daily to help him prepare for book reports goes to the library with him and attends church run father and son banquets. A dry wit runs throughout the diary: he hurts his hand burning brush and reminds himself to not play with fire. He also can descend into poor form mentioning playing Chinese Checkers in a not so kind manner. The diary also details a three week summer trip to the state of Washington staying around the Seattle area. Here are some snippets: 1938 "January 3rd Not too much in the lSue of work this day. Pascal getting ready for a trip to California. He decided to leave tonight. Cleaned a small turkey which had been hanging in the cold room since December 19th when I returned from Valier with 23 of them. It didn't smell too good. Hope it tastes better. Will see tomorrow night. Bob went out to the Christmas tree fire they had a swell one. I played old Sal for awhile. I've chased gums and so to bed." "February 7th There was a little snow not much. Temperature hangs around zero. This walking busSuess is rather hard on the dogs and my left from knee to ankle are sore. Too bad I don't have the ambition to make myself walk about half the time. Shoveled the walk but didn't' do any great job just made a path." "March 27th Almost finished raking the lawn but still a lot of wind today. RMA and I went up on hill where the old well rig used to be and had a swell tumble weed fire in the coulee to the east. We figured out how to get the car up on the high butte to the northeast and drove up there. It was too windy to have much fun rolling rocks." "April 3rd Nice day. Did some work on the yard and built a fence to keep people off the back lawn. We went for a ride in the afternoon. RMA Ray and Margie were quite busy in their meetings of the "Bloody Three" which is a three way organization they have formed. Guess it is from reading Tom Sawyer but suppose it's good for them and don't think they will commit too many murders before they think of something else." "April 10th RaSued some in the morning. We overslept and RMA missed going to Sunday School. Spaded the bed by the side of the house and cleaned the one in front. Went for a ride in the afternoon and passed by the pistol range where we picked up a swell mess of bullets. Two policemen were shooting." "May 26th Pretty warm today 81 degrees. Pascal and Hattie went to Big Fork to bring back MaxSue whose school will be out tomorrow. They expect to get home Saturday night. I went out North to Marm's also saw Fiedler and brought in a load of pastes. In the evening we went out for a little ride to see the ACM tulips; they were real pretty." "June 10th Pascal went to Big Sandy to pick up Fred Bydeley who came that far with Skie. They got back here about five. We went on the picnic to Big Falls to celebrate school being out for the year. It was nice there and we drove on down to Morony Dam and then back home. Came on back down town and visited with Fred tell about 10:30." "July 10th & 11th Went up to Johnson's for dinner a darn good meal but of course we were late. There was a little hail storm there in the afternoon. Left there at 6:30 and went to Glacier Park station where we got a cabin for the night

It was swell digging got the limit. Father's wife passed away at 10:30 A.M. We cleaned clams and watched the chicks but didn't bother them any. Left at 3:10 P. M. went down to Jim's six miles beyond Tumwater. Had a little visit with him and brought Emma back to Forks. Got there at 10:15 P.M. Prims arrived in Great Falls today at noon. Original Handwritten Pair of 1922 Travel Diaries Granting a Remarkable Look Into the Post-WWI World of Art and Upper-Class Travel in Europe
On offer are two heavily illustrated travel diaries dating only a few years after World War I. The 1922 notebooks detail in word and illustration a trip through Italy and France. The writer is unknown but context suggests he is a well-educated Englishman with a good knowledge of the arts. <br /><br />The books consist of descriptions of the many places visited by the author and the artistic pieces he saw. These include for the most part paintings and sculptures. <br /><br />"It was a lovely day so we decided to go to Padua. It was very cold going over in the boat but we found a sheltered nook. It was very interesting going along the Brenta with its 17th and 18th century villas . . . And at Stra the magnificent palaces instead of villas of the Pissani. An enormous estate with many gates in it through which one could catch vistas of beautiful trees and small houses . . . Marie was disappointed in the Giotti frescos--they have been so painted over" April 24. <br /><br />A century earlier the Pissani family had to sell their estate to Napoleon as a result of huge gambling losses. <br /><br />"Saw Cristoforo Martiri Late Gothic Facade . . . Inside has a curios painted ceiling and in one chapel that of the Contarini is Tintorettos Presenta . One of his more pleasing things. In the door is his Last Judgment and the Worship of the Golden Calf" April 26. <br /><br />At the end of April the author leaves Italy for Paris. Most of the entries like those quoted above provide detailed descriptions of various places the diarist visits. What brings the narrative to life are the dozens of cards and photographs affixed to many of the pages. Some are postcards while others appear to be streetscapes that were cut out from contemporary magazines. Still others are photographs most in black and white. The author is clearly an individual of some wealth and certainly taste. What is remarkable is that this journey takes place approximately three years following the end of the incredibly destructive WWI. In fact the war is never really mentioned yet its scars would have been in plain view to the author.<br /><br />The two notebooks each measure 8 inches by 6 inches. They both contain 80 pages and are 100% complete. The diaries show the wear of nearly a century. The covers are intact as are the pages but there is wear on the corners and chipping on pages throughout. The handwriting is quite legible. <br /><br />Historians will find value in the rich detail of these notebooks. The photographs of street scenes bring this long-gone world to life. The contrast of the general destruction of the war years and some of the most magnificent art works of Western civilization is striking. Ex reference library copies with pictorial bookmarks on pastedowns handwritten numbers on reverse of title page. Gorgeous Wonderfully Detailed Original Handwritten 1917 Travel Diary by the Wife of a Former Rhode Island Supreme Court Chief Justice
On offer is a fine journal by Rosabelle Matteson chronicling a cross-continent automobile trip she took in the early 20th century.<br /><br />Rosabelle Matteson was married to Charles Matteson who had been Associate Justice of the Rhode Island State Supreme Court from 1875 to 1891 and Chief Justice of the Rhode Island Supreme Court from 1891 to 1900. Following Charles Matteson's retirement the couple commenced a series of travels that took them across the United States and to Europe. Belle Matteson passed away in 1920 and her husband five years later in 1925. <br /><br />This diary chronicles a 1917 road trip across the United States and back. Belle and Charles were accompanied by two female friends. The entries are succinct and well-written each entry taking up only a page. The author notes places they stayed distances covered and incidentals such as hotel costs. This is followed by a rich description of the day's events. <br /><br />"New York / Hotel Theresa 124-128 St. And 7th Av. / Room two beds 4.00 both / 189 miles" May 10 1917. <br /><br />While in New York City on May 10 Rosabelle notes the presence of General Joseph Joffre Commander in Chief of the Army of France who visited New York that month: "Streets most elaborately dressed with bunting in honor of the French Commissioners. Joffre at head" May 11 1917. <br /><br />"Kansas City Bridge and Movies / Very pleasant this morning but more cyclone reports also floods in the direction we are going. Jennie and Eva went to the Automobile Club of Kansas City and were earnestly advised to wait still a little longer . . . Charles took me out to the soda fountain and back but ate nothing himself. Later Jennie and I had our hair done and still later Charles read a little from 'The Life of the Bee' which we commenced some days ago. Then dinner at the Savoy and some more movies. Excellent" June 6 1917. <br /><br />Their travels took them to the Grand Canyon and on to California. From there they journeyed north crossing into Canada to visit Victoria British Columbia. <br /><br />"This place makes a great impression the Parliament Houses being very pretentious and the Empress Hotel being large and grand too much so to compare with the otherwise unpretentious city. The population has been reduced from 60000 to 20000 through war conditions. Distressing" August 24 1917. <br /><br />The last entry is recorded on October 4 in Cleveland Ohio. <br /><br />The journal is comprised of 158 single-sided pages kept inside a silk-lined leather book jacket. The leather cover has hand-tooling designs and features a portrait of a woman. The leather cover shows signs of wear but is completely intact. The pages are in excellent condition and the handwriting is very neat. Interestingly some pages have letterhead belonging to the Supreme Court of Rhode Island.<br /><br />This is a superb travel journal. It covers an extensive amount of the United States at a time when such travel was uncommon. Automobiles and roads were still in their early stages of development. For a geographer this is an outstanding travelogue that highlights the many regions of the country. For a social historian Rosabelle Matteson's observations paint a quick sketch of life across the United States from the vast prairies to San Francisco's Chinatown. <br /><br />"I am much interested in these ranch ladies whom I meet" Belle writes "their lives have been so very different from my own" August 2 1917.<br /><br />The diary paints a vivid portrait of a long-vanished America. hardcover

1952 Original Handwritten Diary Account of an American Army Mp Who Witnesses the Bloody May Day Riots in Japan and Serves in the Korean War
On offer is a small diary where young American Army MP Charles A. White recorded his experiences in Korea during the war. <br /><br />White was from St. Louis Missouri. He enlisted in the United States army in 1948 and served in the 95th Military Police Battalion. This battalion was the largest most geographically dispersed military police battalion in the United States Army. The unit fell under the command of the 18th Military Police Brigade. The 95th was activated in June 1945 in Germany and operated until its inactivation in June 2014. It served in post-war Germany the Korean War the Vietnam War Iraq and Afghanistan. <br /><br />White's diary begins with him preparing to board the troop carrier USNS General Hugh J. Gaffey leaving from Fort Leonard Wood and bound for Korea. "Went aboard USNS Gen. Hugh J. Gaffey at 1300. Cold nasty day. Ship large nice. Sposed to be best troop ship. Pacific. Movies crowded. Food not bad. Weather warming. Do nothing today but police. Am enjoying trip a lot. Wish was in Navy. Ship 16000 tons. 608 feet 23 knots. Said to be in tail of hurricane. Weather worsening. Little sleep tonight almost tossed out top bunk. Still stormy; ships paper reports 60 foot waves still supposed in hurricane. Dependents topside. Certainly going first class" April 2. <br /><br />On April 14 the ship arrived in Japan. "Weather nasty. Word passed we have guard tomorrow for debarkation. Rainy. Passed Yokosuka dropped hook. Still raining cold. Guard debarked ship. Jap train to Camp Drake. Processed. First views of Japanese and buildings. Little wooden hovels and some US type buildings. People smile seem very friendly to US G. I.' s. Drake's buildings 450 ft. Long. Jap prep school. PX fabulous. Thru processing. Hope I get G. H. Q. Find M-1 for zero. Japanese are interesting bunch. All smiles and little bows. Beginning to realize a little of what people like about this place." <br /><br /> White's April 30th entry discusses the Bloody May Day riots for which he was present. By June he had arrived in Korea. "We pull CQ here every fifteen days and it gets rather tiresome after awhile. Have a lot of planes. Red and Yellow for air and ground attack several air alerts but no enemy planes. The Han Bridge is blocked out as is a great deal of the area surrounding it which makes it a glorious black target in the midst of the lited area in case of a possible raid. Won is supposedly sold legally at 6000 to the dollar but the value fluctuates with the time of the month near or far from payday on the black market and who buys it legally The usual range is from 7000 right after payday to maybe 110000 toward the end of the month. You are continually besieged by little boys who look to be about 7 but are probably nearer 17 who want to 'changyamung' or invite you to a 'Horahora' where they assure you the girls are all clean well educated and Japanese" June 9. <br /><br />Measuring approximately 2.5 inches by 5.75 inches the diary contains 52 pages and is approximately fifty percent complete. The cover and binding are in good condition as are the pages. The handwriting is legible. This is an excellent perspective of the Korean War seen through the eyes of an MP who was there on the ground. A military historian would find this valuable in cross-referencing other information. White's comments add a human note to this very grim war experience. hardcover

1905 Original Handwritten Diary by a Vermont Student Who Would Become the Matriarch of a Multigenerational British Columbia Lumber Dynasty
On offer is a fine diary by Bessie Townsend a young high school student turned teacher working at the turn of the 20th century in rural Vermont. <br /><br />Bessie Townsend kept this diary throughout 1905. At the time of writing she was completing high school at the Black River Academy located in Ludlow Vermont and embarking on a teaching career. The diary contains numerous short daily entries that describe life on the farm and at school: <br /><br />"About 30 pupils in school. Everyone has German measles" March 20. <br /><br />"Went to school. My eyes are bloodshot and my face rough and I don't feel well. Hope I shant have German measles" March 23. <br /><br />"Dr. Bates cleared me said I didn't have measles. I have got them all the same. Doused tonight" March 24. <br /><br />"Mama walked to Tyson to get her valise check. Rain tonight. Ma and I had a fight she don't hardly speak to me" July 18. <br /><br />"Washed and folded the clothes and got supper then Will took me to Tyson. I had offers from 4 schools. All give about $4.50 clear per week" August 21. <br /><br />"Like my school work but there isn't a decent scholar in school" September 5. <br /><br />"Awful day. Kids mean as dirt" October 31. <br /><br />"On the whole I think I have gone pretty well this year. I have graduated from B. R. A. Taught school with success. Did nothing I am ashamed of. Saved about as much money as I have spent. Passed teachers examination and made some of my clothes" Dec 31. <br /><br />This book measures 5 inches by 3.25 inches contains 60 pages plus memoranda and is 100 percent complete. The cloth cover is in fair condition: there are some stains and wear marks and the closure clasp is missing. The spine and binding of the book are intact though a few pages at the front have partially separated from the spine. All other pages are intact and in good condition and the handwriting is legible. <br /><br />Bessie Townsend was born in Windsor County Vermont in 1887. At some point after she completed this diary she married Henry Clemons Meeker of Connecticut and they moved to the town of Merritt in British Columbia Canada. In British Columbia Henry became manager of the Nicola Valley Pine Lumber Company. The company was an important institution in the community providing many jobs and even responsible for generating power for the town of Merritt. Bessie was active in her community as well and the local newspaper the Nicola Valley News often chronicled her appearance as host or guest at society events. Bessie and Henry had a large family and some of their children went to work in the family business. <br /><br />This is an outstanding diary written by a young woman who would in time help lay the foundation for a very successful and prosperous multi-generational family business. Her diary gives a clear idea of what life was like at the beginning of the 20th century in rural Vermont. Replete with names and places from Bessie's small Windsor County community it is an excellent resource for genealogical researchers. Anyone looking at the role of women at the turn of the century in America will find that Bessie paints a distinct picture of the social bounds with which women had to contend. hardcover

1926 Original Handwritten Diary of a Young Norfolk Man Who Provides an Entertaining Glimpse of Post-Wwi Life Mildly Inconvenienced by the United Kingdom General Strike and Scandalized by Local Theatre
King's Lynn Norfolk England. Good with no dust jacket. 1926. Hardcover. On offer is a detailed 1926 diary that belonged to a 23-year-old Englishman named John E. Gibson. Gibson was born in 1903 in London and lived and worked in King's Lynn a town in Norfolk at the time his diary was written. The authors engaging observations touch on many of the significant events of the year. "Went with Mum to the Theatre to see 'White Cargo' a story of life out in West Africa & the result of a white man marrying a black . . . The strongest language I've ever heard on a stage was used & one especially made everyone sit up & I was a bit flabbergasted myself: one said to another & it just fitted to a T 'poor bloody fool'" January 13 1926. Gibson references a May 2nd plane crash that occurred during an air show that featured stunt flying referred to at the time as "crazy flying." Included with the diary is a photocopy of a newspaper article that discusses the crash as well as a copy of a photograph that shows the plane itself. These were added later by an individual researching Gibson. "Yesterday afternoon an aeroplane that had been taking up people for flights crashed in the old cemetery. The pilot was killed" May 3 1926. The diary also chronicles the beginning of the 1926 United Kingdom general strike the largest industrial dispute in Britain's history: "At midnight last night all the coal miners came out on strike & the railway men have come out too. There were no trains running this morning & we therefore had no newspapers. My sister had to cycle to Walpole. Everybody seems excited & they all listen round wire-less broadcasters for news" May 4 1926. The diary measures 5 inches by 3.35 inches. It contains 365 pages and is 100 percent complete. The book itself has a red cover and was created by John Walker & Co. Ltd. And the preliminary pages of this Walker's Diary give information specific to 1926 such as the time of the rising and setting of the moon in London postal regulations and important dates such as English law sittings and university terms for Oxford Cambridge and Durham. The book is in excellent condition and the handwriting is quite legible. Included with the diary is a collection of extensive genealogical and biographical notes about Gibson and his family and copies of seven black-and-white photographs. The pages confirm Gibson's identity identify immediate family members and shed light on the circumstances of his life. Gibson's diary offers an excellent look at life in Norfolk England in the years following the First World War.
