ALBERT WILSON CONDON
1892 1893 ORIGINAL PAIR 2 OF MANUSCRIPT DIARIES HANDWRITTEN BY A TOBACCO MERCHANT AND OWNER OF THE FIRST 5 AND DIME IN FREDERICK MARYLAND
FREDERICK MARYLAND. Good. 1892. On offer are two 2 original 1892 and 1893 manuscript diaries and 90 ephemeral pieces handwritten and once belonging to Albert Wilson Condon of Frederick Maryland both diaries have his name engraved written and/or stamped on them. Albert March 30th 1874 - May 16th 1940 owned the first 5 & Dime in old downtown Frederick and became sole owner of the Condon Tobacco Store. In the 1892 diary from January 1st to January 15th he has written poems and sayings. Then his trip to Washington D.C. falls in the month of September which he writes about. But he also rewrites a summary of that trip on the first pages of the diary January 16th through February 17th 11 full pages. He talks of surprising his father at the Navy Yard. He tours the Treasury Department Washington Monument Arlington Cemetery Lycern Museum Medical Museum Georgetown a Panorama show of Gettysburg the Capitol and more. Then more poetry and sayings through to June 11th. Then there are 2 pages or 8 days worth that are blank and finally on June 20th his daily diary entries start and he writes full entries for every day after that. Albert also does a fair bit of traveling for the business to the towns surrounding Frederick and also to West Virginia. However the 1892 diary starts out with a trip to Washington D.C. and then in the 1893 diary he attends the Chicago World's Fair but only writes "At Fair." Those are the only days that don't have full entries in the 1893 diary and they are from October 8th to the 26th of October. Otherwise the 1893 diary has a full handwritten entry for every day of the year. Albert does a super job detailing the local and current events and his thoughts: Lizzie Borden axe murder Democratic Conventions the hanging of 4 black men for the murder of a Dr. Hill the Ford Theatre in Washington D.C. collapsing killing many the suicide of a young woman in town and so much more. It's interesting too that on November 25th 1892 he writes "Stopped using tobacco" and yet he runs and owns a tobacco store. Germen men start for the front but will get left
Today this town Frederick is all a stir as to who will be nominated on the Democratic ballot for President. Tyler Davis and Lay Magill are extremely excited. On this day the Democrats nominated their President who will not be elected. Mr. Cleveland was nominated this morning about 3 o'clock in the midst of an exciting mob during a severe thunder storm in which the lightening was extremely vivid
.Was an exciting day in Frederick as it was the day after the nomination of Cleveland and a ratification meeting was held at City Hall. Mckaig J. E. R. Wood Lay Magell and Fred _____ being the speakers." "June 30th On this day I left for my first trip to Sharpsburg. Went by the way of Boonsboro. Took in the cemetery of Antietam and S. Mountain which is a beautiful site to look upon." "July 5th I arrived in Frederick early in the morning of this day and left at half past five for my mountain trip. Did not find many of the merchants home. Stopped for the night at Foxville." "July 14th Was cloudy nearly all day. Played centerfield in a game of ball between the East side clerks and a picked nine consisting of the Catholic Union Fast Mail and Bentstown Bards. Result score 13 14 favor Picked Nine." "August 8th & 9th I started on a trip in W. Virginia. Went by way of Feagaville Jefferson Petersville Knoxville Weaverton and Sandyhook to Harpers Ferry. Staid there all night. Went over to Island Park to a picnic there was a circus there
.Left Harpers Ferry at 11 o'clock and went by the way of Camp Hill Bolivar and Halltown to Charlestown to Hotel Carter. Staid there over night and had a good time. Also had good sales in that town." "August 12th Left Martinsburg and went by way of Shepherds Town. Crossed the river at that place into Maryland and got a negro to drive to Sharpsburg as I was very sick but felt better toward night. Had diarrhea and cramps together." "August 19th I met Mr. Brink a man who had crossed the Atlantic 8 times and had been all over the U.S. Left Germantown and came by the way of Boyds Buck Lodge Shidell Camus Hayatts Town and Urbana to Frederick. It was very dusty and I was feeling badly when I got home." "September 7th & 8th Left the Carter house and started for Middleway. This was the night that the great fight between Sullivan and Corbett was to take place for the championship of the world. Awoke in the morning only to find the Sullivan man feeling quite sore as Corbett had come out victorious in the 21st round. I went as far as Martinsburg. Attended a play at the opera house." "September 17th & 18th Went to Washington D.C. on the 6:05 train. Arrived in that place a little after 8 o'clock. Went straight to the navy Yard and found father there. Went through all the different shops there and down on the wharf
After breakfast father and I walked out in Arlington Cemetery and there saw Uncle Henry Condon's grave. He died in 1864. Also saw several other monuments and things of interest." "September 26th Arrived in Frederick on the 6:45 getting here about 7. Was kept quite busy all day putting and shipping goods and quite sleepy today. Got out my accounts for Ridgeville and made preparations for an early start." "October 3rd & 4th I started for W. Va. and got as far as Harpers Ferry until night. There I found Price from Washington and Conrad from Baltimore. Had quite a nice time in that place
.Left H. Ferry about ten o'clock and went down to the river and from there to Charlestown. Saw the large Cleveland Stevenson and Wilson. Charles Young took my whip in Charlestown." "October 11th 12th & 14th Tuesday the first day of the Grand Frederick fair. It was quite lively in town that day. Saw some people from Charlestown that I knew. It was a delightful day. Went to see the Wild West show at night
.There was an unusual large crowd in town for the second day of the fair. I remained at the store all day. Saw a great many people who I knew. Everything passed off quietly with but one or two fights
This was the last day of the fair and it was largely attended and there was a great deal of fighting going on. Four broke out anew in Gambril's Mill at night. I went to see the Pearl of Savoy played by Stanton Redding." "October 20th Left Tyler's and come by the way of Emmitsburg to Frederick. There was a large Democratic meeting in town that night and parade and fireworks were immense. Senator Thomas F. Bayard of N.Y. spoke to a large audience." "October 31st I was so stiff and sore from riding on Sunday that I could scarcely navigate. I started on my W. Va. trip and reached Harpers Ferry by night. The mountains in the Linden County side of the river were all in fire." "November 1st Y. Murphy drove me up in Bolivar Monday night to look at the fire. We had quite a nice time. I reached Charlestown Tuesday night. Had a fine time with E. C. Grubbs. Political affairs were ablaze in that town." "December 31st The last day of the year. I remained in Frederick all day. Bought a pair of ice skates. It snowed late in the evening and at night. Mr. Rice come home from his West Virginia trip. Mr. Davis is celebrating the last day of 1892." 1893 "January 13th I went to Burkittsville in the sleigh. It was a fine day and the sleighing was good. I had a very good time with Pfiefer girls. Four negros were hanged at Chestertown for the murder of Dr. Hill. I went to the hall at night. Fast mail." The following information in an article about Frank Brown who was the Governor of Maryland from 1892-1896: "The second of these instances was Governor Brown's commutation of the sentences of four Negro youths who had been scheduled to hang for the murder of Dr. Hill of Chestertown. Feeling ran high against the accused men. Brown had to exercise great secrecy in his investigation so that his intervention in the case might not result in further violence. Governor Brown not only visited the boys in person but he also examined the evidence exhaustively. Then he sent a State oyster boat secretly at night to Chestertown to take the four prisoners aboard and bring them to Baltimore. Finally he commuted their sentences. For a time residents of the Eastern Shore were bitter against the Governor for his interference and threatened to lynch the four Negroes. Better judgment however prevailed and the four men responsible for the crime were later apprehended and hanged" "February 7th Was quite cool. I staid in town. Mr. Rice was down to Rockville. At night I went to select dance given by the Rose Bud club and danced with Miss Conner. It was the first time I ever danced." "March 8th I started in my Mt. trip along with Mr. Smith. The roads were very bad and in some places the snow was drifted as high as the top of the wagon. I got as far as Foxville the first night. Had a fine time with the boys hustling dice 27 cts." "March 20th Was a fairly good day. I started in my W. Va trip and got as far as Harpers Ferry and then stopped for the night. There was a chicken fight there and a lot of fellows from Ferry and Martinsburg was there betting on the fight and gambling." "April 17th I started in my West Virginia trip. It was a nice day. I went by the way of Petersville Knoxville Weaverton and Sandy Hook and arrived at H. Ferry about 2 o'clock. Stopped at the Conner Hotel business was very good." "April 28th Was a beautiful day. Fore Paws Circus was in town. The town was flooded with people from the country. I went to see the circus in the evening. Took May. Saw the American Revolution which was as fine as silk. There was lots of people in town from down around home." "May 12th I stained the bath tub for Mrs. Pope. Went over it twice. Mr. Pope notified me that I could keep in the look out for another job as he could not afford to keep two men on the road. Put up 10000 cigs in the afternoon." "June 7th was a nice cool day. I drove from home to Frederick. The firemen had their large demonstration and there was one of the largest and best parades that was ever in Frederick. Their being from forty five to fifty five companies in line." "June 9th Was a clear warm day. I staid in town all day. The town was dead as all the firemen had pretty well left. The Ford's Theatre building in Washington collapsed and there was about 28 or 30 persons killed and 100 or more injured." "June 14th Charles Baker was in town. I staid around the store all day. Had very little to do. At night Roddy came home. I went around to the Y.M.C.A. rooms and listened to a debate subject whether the Electric Rail road from Frederick to Midddletown would be a profit to Frederick. Harry Stone left for Baltimore." "June 24th I staid around the store all day and put up some goods. Roddy left in the 9:15 train to go up home so I was all alone. I read the papers. Miss Lizzie Borden was acquitted in June 20 of the murder of her father and mother. Was a clear day." "July 4th I celebrated the fourth by going out to Black Rock with a crowd of 10 couples of us in a four horse buggy and spending the day pleasantly swinging jumping grape vines playing croquet ball and cards and other amusements." "July 27th Miss Lizzie Borden confirmed she killed her father and step mother at Fall River Mass. It was a pleasant day. The crops in general are all suffering terribly for the want of rain. I staid at the store all day. At night I went around to C.H." "August 10th Was emancipation day. There was a very large crowd of colored people in town. Was a clear and warm day. I went down to Mt. Airy in the four o'clock train. Had a good time at camp. Staid over night with Raymond Runkles in their tent." "August 18th Miss Nettie Moberly committed suicide by shooting herself in the mouth with a 42 caliber revolver. I staid at home all day and worked in the store. Salso picked the pears in the yard. We filled the case with an assortment of pipes." "September 11th I stared in my Ridge trip and found business quite dull. I took dinner at darkey's. It rained very hard during the evening. At Germantown. I reached Cedar Grove about eight o'clock. Received a letter from E. Page." "October 4th I staid around the store all day. Got out my W. Va. accounts and then put up goods and waited on the general trade. It rained nearly all day. I ordered my ticket for Chicago. Business was very good. We had a fair day at the store." "November 23rd I staid around the store and put up goods all day. At night I went up to the Rose Bud dance and danced until 2 o'clock and then took Miss Wilson home. The dance proved very unsatisfactory to a great many." "December 1st I left town and started for Sharpsburg. I reached Boonsboro by dinner time and took dinner at Kirk's Hotel. I saw a man there who had convulsions from drinking too much whiskey. I got to Sharpsburg about 3 o'clock." The ephemera includes receipts tax documents small broadsides memoranda's obituaries advertising cards newspaper clippings United States Express Company papers US Post office papers and so much more. He large number of ephemeral items add a depth to the narrative that researchers and historians will appreciate. They include: Thomas E. Pope Sunday School cards brochures and tobacco business cards Pope was a tobacco dealer too and Albert may have worked for Pope in the beginning Dr. T.S. Eaden Dentist The Daily and Weekly Examiner Newspaper R.A. Kemp Edison Mimeograph J. E. Price & Co. George A. Gilbert Dealer in boots shoes hats caps trunks and carpet bags The Fredrick City Manufacturing Co. The Atlantic Refinery Company Lowenstein Tailors A. C. McCardell Confectioners and more. The newspaper articles are mostly about events that happened in Frederick or the surrounding areas and in fact many of them coincide with his entries in the diaries. One very sad article in one of the clippings was about a young unnamed immigrant girl traveling on the trains and when she tried to jump from one car to another while they were passing she fell and was killed. Each of the wallets/diaries measure about 3 ¾" x 7 ½". Dégagnac France Lot. Very Good. 1555. On offer is a fascinating handwritten medieval French manuscript book earliest date 1555 with entries through 1597 in original blindstamped calf with small Fleur-de-lis. This stunning book has approximately 300 pages of handwritten entries being a register of acts properties transactions loans personal notes and journal entries the majority concerning Marc-Antoine Hébrart a noted merchant in the village of Dégagnac in Lot in south-western France. Most certainly Jewish it is evident that the Hebrart family was one of the largest land-holding families in the area. "In 1504 and 1505 the two "headmen" of the village Antoine Hebrart and Pierre Peysson together accounted for 15 percent of the land of the village" Ref: By Le Roy Emmanuel and Ladurie John Day The Peasants of Languedoc . A pencil annotation indicates that Marc Hébrard was of Jewish origin. A fairly cursory examination of the manuscript lends no additional support to this assertion but it is possible given the history of the Jews of neighboring Languedoc and the fact that some Jews remained in France under Christian-like assumed names after their expulsion in 1306. The generic 'Marc-Antoine' is cited as a Jewish name in Sara Uckelman's "Jewish Given Names Found in "Les Noms Des Israélites en France." "In the month of March 1857 I was advised by my friends to buy a lot and build a house what I did I bought a lot on Barnstable Street from Mr I. M. James for the sum of three hundred fifty dollars payable $50 cash and the balance in two years at the rate of 12 percent interest and as I had no money for building a house I was obliged to borrow fifty dollars from Mr James Langlois at 10 percent and sixty from Mr John Langlois
." So begins this fascinating mid 19th century financial diary and journal of account of money owed and money earned - but so much more given the personality of the writer! This 7 ¼" x 6" account book was written and kept by Joseph Du Four a blacksmith by trade who was born in 1836 on the Island of Guernsey and who came to America in 1854 finally settling in Racine Wisconsin on November 26 1855. ref: History of the First Methodist Episcopal Church-Racine Wisconsin; by E W Leach. 1912 Joseph borrowed and earned money from many different people some of them well known in local history during the 6 years covered in this book 1857-1861. Among those listed are: James Langlois John Langlois Mr Bradley Mr Hood Mr Pugh Pendleton Boutwell Turbush Gallienne James Graham Peter Nelson John Lunn Lawrence Paul and Peter Du Four John Robilliard J G Williams Osborne Osgood. He did blacksmith work for: Tomlinson Hurlbut Osbourne Peirce Blake Fountain Doolitte Bay W L Utley Millet Griffiths Phelps Morgan Conroe Hart etc. There are several pages of expenses where he lists items purchased along with prices. He suffered from "piles" as he bought "one bottle of Dr Libbys Pile Ointment" for $1.00. Thirty nine of the pages are written on the others are blank. The blank front free endpaper reads: "Memoranda 1857" and contains the ornate signature of Joseph Du Four with flourishes. The verso of that page reads: "Racine Wisconsin" and the next blank endpaper contains a doodle in fountain pen of a pair of birds. Marbled boards and black leather spine. Tight very good condition throughout. "All this do I owe and have nothing to pay it except the hope that God will bless my labours and that by little and little I shall be able to pay it". Sensational archive of handwritten diaries centered around the Brubaker family of Lancaster County Pennsylvania. Twenty 20 books comprised of sixteen 16 handwritten diaries three 3 small notebooks and one 1 published book with manuscript notes. The diaries are dated 1914 1916 1917 1917 1918 1919 1920 1921 1922 1923 1923 1924 1926 1927 and 1927. On average the books are 80% full. There are four authors: J. Henry Brubaker has written 12 diaries and most certainly 2 of the 3 notebooks. His wife Anna has written one notebook in her maiden name Groff and daughters Anna Ethel 3 and Susan Violet 1. The Brubakers appear to have been prominent rural business people in the farm supply business. A huge family as evidenced by the copious genealogical notes for the Lancaster County area as the notebooks specifically and the diaries are a wealth of family names and the connections. Sensational 1895-1903 Original Handwritten Diary Collection Rich with Detail about Franklin Delano Roosevelt's Years At Groton School from the Perspective of His Closest Friend
GROTON MASSACHUSETTS HYDE PARK CHICAGO. Good. 1895. Full-Leather. On offer is an extraordinary collection of diaries that give incredible insight into young Franklin Delano Roosevelts years at Groton--one of the most exclusive preparatory schools in the United States at the time--from the perspective of his closest schoolmate James Lippincott Goodwin. In these six diaries a young J. L. Goodwin chronicles his daily life from 1895 to 1898 and 1903 and features a cast of characters whose family legacies live on to this day. Classmates mentioned include Robert Rutherford "Colonel" McCormick who went on to become owner and publisher of the Chicago Tribune; J. R. "Tadd" Roosevelt Jr. nephew to both FDR and Colonel John Jacob "Jack" Astor IV; Lathrop "Jake" Brown who was FDRs roommate at Harvard and who would go on to become a member of the U. S. House of Representatives; and most significantly Franklin Delano Roosevelt who became 32nd president of the United States and who along with Winston Churchill would lead the free world through its darkest days in WWII. Goodwin himself was also part of a well-connected family. His father owned a railroad and two insurance companies and was the cousin of American financier J. P. Morgan. Goodwins brother Philip was one of the architects of New Yorks Museum of Modern Art. J. L. Goodwin and FDR were both new to Groton School in 1896 and these outsiders became fast friends as they adjusted to student life. Both boys were prolific writers and FDR mentions Goodwin in his letters home. Similarly FDR appears often in Goodwins diary entries. For example: "Passed with Riggs and Franklin Roosevelt during our time after school but it was very disagreeable on account of the ground being so wet" May 3 1897. "This is a legal holiday being Lincolns Birthday. Mrs. Roosevelt is visiting came up today" February 12 1898. "Franklin Roosevelt was down from Harvard. Saw him at the fence a while" May 18 1903. J. L. Goodwin graduated from Groton in 1900 and Yale in 1905. He later pursued a Masters in Forestry and was a noted conservationist and pioneering forester. Although the diaries do not bear his name there are ample contextual clues to determine that they were indeed kept by Goodwin. His collected papers reside in the James L Goodwin collection at Yale University. In this archive there are six personal diaries of J. L. Goodwin: 1 1895: 5.75" x 3.5" 122 pages 100% complete good condition. 2 1896: 5.75" x 3.5" 183 pages 80% complete good condition. 3 1897: 5.75" x 3.5" 183 pages 70% complete good condition. 4 1897: 8.75" x 4.5" 198 pages 50% complete fair condition. This diary was kept at the same time as the other 1897 diary. Some entries overlap but it contains entries that were not entered in the 5.75" x 3.5" 1897 diary. 5 1898: 5.75" x 3.5" 365 pages 75% complete good condition. 6 1903: 5.75" x 3.5" 365 pages 85% complete good condition. Also included in this archive is a first edition copy of the 1947 book "F. D. R. His Personal Letters: Early Years." It is the first in a 3-volume series collated and published by FDR's son Elliott. Many of these letters were written by FDR from Groton School at the same time as J. L. Goodwin was writing his diaries and the volumes are a wonderful complement to each other. On offer is a super original unique manuscript relic of WWII Japanese war effort being a handwritten diary of Japanese newsman for the period from December 8 Japan time 1941 to the spring and summer of 1942 noting the major events including Pearl Harbor Midway Guadalcanal the Eastern Solomon Islands the beginnings of New Guinea campaign naval engagements with the USS Saratoga Yorktown North Carolina and more. The entries seem to end around late summer of 1942 and there is an interesting postmark in the volume for December 8th 1942 one year after Pearl Harbor. Since this was written during wartime in order to conserve paper the writer used inverted pages from an old office ledger. On offer is an interesting and unique 1921 manuscript diary handwritten primarily by Rose Saba and sometimes we believe by her husband Saleem N. Saba. The free end paper states their names and 'Now in Zahlah Syria Former Res. Toronto Ont. Canada.' We note that Zahlah is part of Lebanon today. Entries are for the most part in English but there are entries in Arabic which we believe Saleem wrote. Rose writes many interesting entries which range from Saleem's travels throughout to Beirut Damascus and her own doings at home from the mundane such as ironing meals visits and news from home. We also note that they are a Christian family as they frequently go to church. The diary was located in Toronto and we hypothesize that they moved back from Syria at some point. Historians and researchers of early independent Syria and Lebanon will no doubt find this diary an interesting and unique travel relic of the times. ANNAPOLIS MARYLAND MD USA. Very Good. 1933. On offer is a super charming original 1933 - 1936 manuscript diary handwritten by a young United States Navy midshipman. Only 20 years old at the beginning of his writings in this 5 year book the author Saverio Filippone born May 23rd 1913; died 2005 Class of 1937 will go on to serve his country with distinction as a submarine commander in World War II and then remarkably again serve in both Korea ad Vietnam. The diary will be of particular interest to collectors and historians of naval life and education and the men and women attracted to life serving in the Navy will find an interesting and unusual narrative here in many ways. The diary is sporadically used in 1933 very much so in 1934 and 1935 and then less so in 1936 and is comprised of mostly personal entries typical of a young man such as parties girls travelling and of course the many entries that have to do with his cruises and academy related activities and education making for a fascinating look at what life was like as a midshipmen in the 30's at the naval academy especially as we know that this young man becomes a commander of distinction in serving his country. Readers may also be surprised at the level of intimacy Saverio shares with his diary especially regarding some of the women he has relationships with; he is unusually candid and revealing of his emotions for many men. Intriguingly the gift inscription states: "Saverio Filippone from the only one xmas '33". The book has a vinyl front cover with a Victorian illustration the book lacks the locking clasp part but is otherwise VG. BIO NOTES: Events related to this officer: Submarine USS Tarpon 175 19 Jun 1944 USS Tarpon Lt.Cdr. S. Filippone leaves base for her 11th war patrol. She was ordered to perform lifeguard duty in the Truk area. 8 Aug 1944 USS Tarpon Lt.Cdr. S. Filippone ended her 11th war patrol when she returns to base. 31 Aug 1944 USS Tarpon Lt.Cdr. S. Filippone leaves base for her 12th and final war patrol. Once again she was assigned to lifeguard duty in the Truk area. 14 Oct 1944 USS Tarpon Lt.Cdr. S. Filippone ended her 12th and final war patrol at Pearl Harbor. Tarpon was now assigned to training duties on the U.S. east coast. TORONTO ONTARIO ON ROSTOV RUSSIA. Very Good. 1911. On offer is a remarkable original 1911 handwritten manuscript diary by a young Jewish boy named Aaron Glassberg later Aaron Glassberg Volpe living in Toronto Canada. All the more remarkable is the clear articulate and fluent manner this 16 year old who born in Rostov Russia in 1895 writes after having only lived in Canada for 5 years. Our writer is a smart tough mannered kid who experiences a young raw Toronto. Anti-semitism is a reality of the time and the city and this young Zionist is not a stranger to it. He so identifies with his Jewishness he identifies all his contacts by religion either by fact or intuition. He talks of many meetings of the Zionist Club. His family rents rooms and he bitterly complains of the sweet talking tenant who absconded owing $10. From Elizabeth Street near Kensington Market he travels across town daily to attend Jarvis Collegiate. Collectors and historians of early 20th century Toronto would be hard pressed to find a more explicit look at the times than this journal. On a biographical note the author goes on to become a chemist pharmacist and successful business man and doctor who was the patriarch of a family of doctors. A full length photograph of the young Glassberg is pasted to the fep. Along with the diary a large 6 x 7 inch journal style book are a large number of ephemera pieces from 1906 through 1969 relating to Aaron Glassberg and his family. S.S. OCEANIC CHICAGO ILLINOIS BOSTON MASS. Very Good. 1900. Leather. On offer are two handwritten manuscript diaries written by George Dresser Smith of Chicago Illinois. In the first diary a lovely journal style leather notebook George identifies himself on the fep. We believe he is a young man perhaps mid teens traveling with his family from New York City on August 18th 1900 on the steamer Oceanic. George details a very comprehensive 'classic' European tour for two full months but the writing ends abruptly on October 18th 1900 the date being handwritten but nothing else on this day and the rest of the book is blank. The second diary is a cheap notebook style paper cover journal. Unnamed and undated the handwriting is most certainly the same yet more mature. George at this point in his life is working/mentoring/studying with Dr. Addison Dr. Talbot and Dr. Broadhead in and around Boston but they seem to make many trips back and forth to New York. It appears that the doctors are Reverends and from Sunday April 6th through Wednesday May 21st George works lives and studies among them. Research suggests this journal may be penned in 1913 having the correct correlation of day to date. Further research may bear more precise information. Here is a snippet: "Pleasant and warm day. Went down to boat to go to island of Marcolm where the inhabitants had made no progress for 200 years. They wore bright colors and wooden shoes. All home made and lived in small houses with no chimneys." "When we arrived we took a carriage and went to the church of St Ursula where we saw the bones and sculls of the 7000 vergins who went to Rome and were killed on their way back besides some beautiful glass windows

1877 ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN DIARY AND LEDGER AUTHORED BY L. C. MERRY A DAIRY FARMER FROM FRENCH CREEK A SMALL TOWN IN CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY OFFERING INSIGHT INTO DAILY LIFE ON HIS FARM AND INTO THE LIFE OF LOCAL COMMUNITY
FRENCH CREEK N.Y. Very Good. 1877. On offer is a super original diary handwritten by a young farmer from French Creek a small town in the state of New York on the border with Pennsylvania. Based on the information found in the diary and in "The Historical Journal of More Family" it is most probable that the diary was written by Lucius Carleton Merry 1846 -1909 who arrived in French Creek in 1850s when his father purchased a large dairy farm there. The diary covers the full year of 1877 an entry made for each day. As most farmers' diaries it contains weather records and lists farming operations including plowing wood cutting sugar tapping apple picking etc. Cheese making was a seasonal activity on May 2nd he wrote: "Make the first cheese today" They were selling cheese and butter in Corry New York or North East not always successfully. At the start of the year Merry wrote down account balance for 1876: "Have been to Corry today settled up the balance of the cheese account and sent 60$ to Jamestown making 542$ in all this year". In addition to regular farm operations county residents were required to do road work each year: "Work on the road have 181/2 days to work this year. One of the often operations in winter was wood cutting and drawing which was not always safe. Merry reports three accidents during the year when people were killed: "Hut Richardson was hurt today so that he died. He was drawing logs and was hit on the head by the binder. Charley Kennedy and I sat up with the corpse." In spite of hard labour and financial problems - several entries are about his father looking for money to buy cows - his diary makes an impression of a very positive sociable person and conveys strong sense of community. He mentions a lot of people neighbours and relatives attending church meetings parties. On April 18th a rare occasion when they had no visitors and did not go out he writes: "Have been at home all day it has been the most lonesome day that I have had in a long time". Church is an important part of his life that he often mentions in the diary: "Go to church and Sunday school have a sermon for the benefit of Freedmen. I think it was the blackest that I ever heard" probably meaning a sermon written by Alexander G. Cummins in 1865. At the end of the diary there is a ledger detailing monthly expenses and income. The diary contains many names of French Creek residents and of residents of nearby towns and mentions many local events including elections: "This afternoon have been to caucus had lots of fun. Pa goes to Corry tonight to get one set of tickets printed.The Republican ticket was all elected". The book has a brown leather cover with flap closure. Name and location written with a pencil on the endpaper. The book is titled "Exelsior Diary 1877". Condition: Very good. Pencil is slightly faded at some places but the text is clear. 1938 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT TRAVEL DIARY - SIX ALPHA DELTA PHI BROTHERS ON THE ROAD TO NEW YORK AND THEN OFF TO PRE-WAR EUROPE
Toronto Ontario Canada New York Europe. Very Good. 1938. On offer is a super "Compositions" notebook style travel journal handwritten by one of six young we estimate very early twenties Canadian men traveling from Toronto Canada by car to New York and then on to England by ship and finally the rest of Europe. All of the fellows are identified save for the author; Bob and Hugh MacMillan Art Boddingtion John MacFarlane and Don Nulands. Though not every day is filled in they misplaced the book for a couple of early weeks the writer amongst them commences writing when they leave Toronto on May 23 1938 and continues to write until they arrive back in September the same year. Our writer seems to be a fine young man with a droll sense of humor keen eye for details and is able to detail his trip with clarity while making for a great read. We learn that they are Alpha Delta Phi fraternity brothers sail across on the 'Paris' a boring ship even for those in First Class like these boys met a pleasant Nazi in Dresden and for the most part they make a very 'touristy' and detailed tour and use their Alpha Delta relationships to a large degree. Many times they tour with professors and doctors while covering it seems every inch of England Germany and much of Holland . Given the year one may wonder if this young man had to return to Europe as a soldier just a year or so later. Fascinating look at a tourist group immediately prior to the War.
