University Press Urbana Ill-1965 First Edition. Cover in very good condition and mylar. Interior bright and clean and signature of Sherman Paul on the inside fly. Includes letter by Elena Wilson to J. Marshall thanking him for his recollection of Edmund Wilson in a 'Punch and Judy' performance. Second volume is the 1966 'second printing'. Cover present but with a surface scratch and back torn with tattered edges and toning with stains. A nice companion to the first edition. It is rare that we have such memorable duplicates. A rare book set plus letter.</p><p>Edmund Wilson 8 May 1895 – 12 June 1972 was an American writer and literary critic. Wilson was considered one of the preeminent American literary critics. Wilson was born in Red Bank New Jersey. His father Edmund Wilson Sr. was a lawyer and served as New Jersey Attorney General. From 1912 to 1916 he was educated at Princeton University after attending prep school at The Hill School where he served as the Editor-in-Chief of the school's literary magazine The Record. He began his professional writing career as a reporter for the New York Sun and served in the army during the First World War. Wilson was the managing editor of Vanity Fair in 1920 and 1921 and later served as Associate Editor of The New Republic and as a book reviewer for The New Yorker and The New York Review of Books. His works influenced novelists Upton Sinclair John Dos Passos Sinclair Lewis Floyd Dell and Theodore Dreiser. He wrote plays poems and novels but his greatest strength was literary criticism.</p><p>He played a recurring role throughout Edna St Vincent Millay's life from the time she was a foreign correspondent for Vanity Fair magazine 1921 to 1923 to the end of her life.</p><p>Axel's Castle: A Study in the Imaginative Literature of 1870-1930 1931 was a sweeping survey of Symbolism. It covered Arthur Rimbaud Auguste Villiers de l'Isle-Adam author of Axel W. B. Yeats Paul Valéry T. S. Eliot Marcel Proust James Joyce and Gertrude Stein.</p><p>In his landmark book To the Finland Station 1940 Wilson studied the course of European socialism from the 1824 discovery by Jules Michelet of the ideas of Vico culminating in the 1917 arrival of Lenin at the Finland Station of Saint Petersburg to lead the Bolshevik Revolution.</p><p>In a celebrated though error-riddled essay on the work of horror writer H.P. Lovecraft Tales of the Marvellous and the Ridiculous New Yorker November 1945; later collected in Classics and Commercials Wilson condemned Lovecraft's tales as 'hackwork'.</p><p>Wilson was interested in modern culture as a whole and many of his writings go beyond the realm of pure literary criticism. His early works are heavily influenced by the ideas of Freud and Marx reflecting his deep interest in their work.</p><p>Context and relationships</p><p>Wilson's critical works helped foster public appreciation for several novelists: Ernest Hemingway John Dos Passos William Faulkner F. Scott Fitzgerald and Vladimir Nabokov. He was instrumental in establishing the modern evaluation of the works of Dickens and Kipling.</p><p>He attended Princeton with Fitzgerald who referred to Wilson as his "intellectual conscience". After Fitzgerald's early death at the age of 44 from a heart attack in December 1940 Wilson edited two books by Fitzgerald The Last Tycoon and The Crack-Up for posthumous publication donating his editorial services to help Fitzgerald's family. Wilson was also a friend of Nabokov with whom Wilson corresponded extensively and whose writing Wilson introduced to Western audiences. However their friendship was marred by Wilson's cool reaction to Nabokov's Lolita and irretrievably damaged by Wilson's public criticism of what Wilson considered Nabokov's eccentric translation of Pushkin's Eugene Onegin.</p><p>Wilson had many marriages and affairs. His first wife was Mary Blair who had been in Eugene O'Neill's theatrical company. His second wife was Margaret Canby. After her death in a freak accident two years after their marriage Wilson wrote a long eulogy to her and said later that he felt guilt over having neglected her. From 1938 to 1946 he was married to Mary McCarthy who like Wilson was well-known for her literary criticism. She admired enormously Wilson's breadth and depth of intellect and they co-operated on numerous works. In an article in The New Yorker Louis Menand says "The marriage to McCarthy was a mistake that neither side wanted to be first to admit. When they fought he would retreat into his study and lock the door; she would set piles of paper on fire and try to push them under it." He wrote many letters to Anaïs Nin criticizing her for her surrealistic style as opposed to the realism that was then deemed correct writing and ended by asking for her hand saying he would "teach her to write" which she took as an insult. Except for a brief falling out following the publication of I Thought of Daisy in which Wilson portrayed Edna St Vincent Millay as Rita Cavanaugh Wilson and Millay remained friends throughout life. He later married Elena Mumm Thornton previously married to James Worth Thornton but continued to have extramarital relationships.</p><p>Cold War times</p><p>Wilson was also an outspoken critic of U.S. Cold War policies. He did not pay his USA federal income tax from 1946 to 1955 and was later investigated by the IRS. Opinions vary on his motives but he also failed to pay his state income taxes during this period which had little to do with the Cold War.</p><p>After a settlement Wilson received a $25000 fine rather than the original $69000 sought by the IRS perhaps due to his political connections to the Kennedy administration. He received no jail time. In his book The Cold War and the Income Tax: A Protest 1963 Wilson argued that as a result of competitive militarization against the Soviet Union the civil liberties of Americans were being paradoxically infringed under the guise of defense from Communism. For these reasons Wilson also opposed U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War.</p><p>Wilson's view of President Lyndon Johnson was decidedly negative. Historian Eric Goldman writes in his memoir The Tragedy of Lyndon Johnson that when Goldman on behalf of President Johnson invited Wilson to read from Wilson's writings at a White House Festival Of The Arts in 1965: "Wilson declined with a brusqueness that I never experienced before or after in the case of an invitation in the name of the President and First Lady."</p><p>From 1964 until 1965 he was a Fellow on the faculty in the Center for Advanced Studies at Wesleyan University.</p> Urbana Press hardcover‎

‎<p>A letter from Gordon Bennett the New York Herald to C. H. Meltzer a correspondent to cover the 4th Railroad Congress to be held in St. Petersburg on August 20th 1872 in which Bennett is going to vacation and show up. He is writing this letter from his Paris apartment at 190 Avenue des Champs Elysees.….This letter has some stains and edge tears and as you can see from the pictures it has some conservator's repairs as well. Tearing at the creases but does mention the possible interview with General Annenkoff see below for brief on Annenkoff. Folds present but a very nice letter. No information is available on the 4th Railroad Congress in St. Petersburg but none the less a rare and important railroad history document.despite its creases tears and stains. Photos are NOT included.</p><p>James Gordon Bennett Jr. May 10 1841 – May 14 1918 was publisher of the New York Herald founded by his father James Gordon Bennett Sr. who immigrated from Scotland. He was generally known as Gordon Bennett to distinguish him from his father.</p><p>Biography: Bennett was educated primarily in France. In 1866 the elder Bennett turned control of the Herald over to him. Bennett raised the paper's profile on the world stage when he provided the financial backing for the 1869 expedition by Henry Morton Stanley into Africa to find David Livingstone in exchange for the Herald having the exclusive account of Stanley's progress.</p><p>Bennett as did many of his social class indulged in the "good life": yachts opulent private railroad cars and lavish mansions. He was the youngest Commodore ever of the New York Yacht Club. In 1861 Bennett volunteered his newly-built schooner yacht Henrietta for the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service during the Civil War. He was commissioned "third lieutenant" viz. brevet second lieutenant of the U.S. Marine Revenue schooner Henrietta beginning in June 1861. She patrolled Long Island until February 1862 when she was sent to Port Royal South Carolina. On March 3 1862 Bennett commanding Henrietta was part of the fleet which captured Fernandina Florida. Bennett and the Henrietta returned to civilian life in New York in May 1862.</p><p>In 1866 he won the first trans-oceanic yacht race. The race was between three American yachts the Vesta the Fleetwing and the Henrietta. They started off of Sandy Hook New Jersey on 11 December 1866 amid high westerly winds and raced to The Needles the furthest westerly point on the Isle of Wight famous for its lighthouse. Bennett's Henrietta won with a time of 13 days 21 hours 55 minutes.</p><p>Julius LeBlanc Stewart Yachting on the Mediterranean 1896. Stewart painted a series of paintings aboard Bennet's yacht Namouna.</p><p>The 1906 Gordon Bennett Cup in Ballooning.</p><p>James Gordon Bennett Jr. However he often scandalized society with his flamboyant and sometimes erratic behavior. In 1877 he left New York for Europe after an incident that ended his engagement to socialite Caroline May. According to various accounts he arrived late and drunk to a party at the May family mansion then urinated into a fireplace some say grand piano in full view of his hosts.</p><p>Bennett's controversial reputation has been thought to have inspired in the United Kingdom the phrase "Gordon Bennett" as an expression of incredulity.</p><p>Settling in Paris he launched the Paris edition of the New York Herald titled The Paris Herald the forerunner of the International Herald Tribune. He backed George W. DeLong's voyage to the North Pole via the Bering Strait. The ill-fated expedition led to the deaths from starvation of DeLong and 19 of his crew a tragedy that only increased the paper's circulation.</p><p>He was a co-founder of the Commercial Cable Company a venture to break the Transatlantic cable monopoly held by Jay Gould.</p><p>Bennett returned to the United States and organized the first polo match in the United States at Dickel's Riding Academy at 39th Street and Fifth Avenue in New York City. He would help found the Westchester Polo Club in 1876 the first polo club in America. He established the Gordon Bennett Cup for international yachting and the Gordon Bennett Cup for automobile races. In 1906 he funded the Gordon Bennett Cup in ballooning Coupe Aéronautique Gordon Bennett which continues to this day. In 1909 Bennett offered a trophy for the fastest speed on a closed circuit for airplanes. The 1909 race in Rheims France was won by Glenn Curtiss for two circuits of a 10 km rectangular course at an average speed of 46.5 miles per hour 74.8 km/h. From 1896 to 1914 the champion of Paris USFSA football soccer received a trophy offered by Gordon Bennett.</p><p>In 1880 Bennett commissioned McKim Mead and White to design the Newport Casino in Newport RI.</p><p>He did not finally marry until he was 73. His wife was Maud Potter widow of George de Reuter son of Julius Paul Reuter founder of Reuters news agency. He died on May 14 1918 in Beaulieu-sur-Mer Alpes-Maritimes France.</p><p>Bennett is buried at the Cimetière de Passy. The nearby Stade de Roland Garros site of the French Open is on the Avenue Gordon Bennett. After his death the Herald was merged with its bitter rival the New York Tribune. Asteroid 305 Gordonia is named after him.</p><p>Mikhail Annenkov: General Mikhail Nikolayevich Annenkov Russian: ; formerly also transcribed Michael Nicolaivitch Annenkoff 1835 in St. Petersburg Russia - January 22 1899 in St. Petersburg Russia was a Russian nobleman author military officer and renowned engineer. An important figure in the history of the Russian conquest of Turkestan in the 19th Century he was Governor-General of the Transcaspian Region today's Turkmenistan.</p><p>General Annenkov was the builder of the strategic Transcaspian Railway in its initial stages through what is now Turkmenistan which made possible the bloody defeat of the Turkmen at Geok-Tepe in 1881. He was also involved in the planning of the Trans-Siberian railroad which was under construction at the time of his death. He also played a major role in the Pendjeh Crisis of 1885 when the UK and Russia nearly went to war. Education and Early Career Born into the wealthy Annenkoff family son of General Nicholas Annenkov Governor of Odessa and the southwestern provinces and aide-de-camp to the Emperor Michael studied at the Corps des Pages and was appointed general adjutant to the general staff of the Imperial Army at St. Petersburg. From 1864-1866 during the Polish uprising Michael earned a reputation as a competent commander and military tactician: by age 27 he had been made a Colonel of the Imperial Army and appointed Aide-de-Camp to Emperor Alexander III of Russia.</p><p>In the 1870s Michael served as Military Attaché to Germany during the Franco-Prussian War and then later to France. His writings on German military tactics during the war were widely read. By 1878 he had been appointed a Lieutenant-General of the Imperial Army. During the Russo-Turkish War 1877–1878 General Annenkoff was placed in charge of transportation learning the valuable skills that would later make him one of the most prominent engineers of his era.</p><p>Central Asia: In the 1880s General Annenkoff served on several campaigns in Central Asia most notably against the Turkmen population serving under General Mikhail Skobelev in the Merv campaign. In order to move troops and supplies he completed laying more than 1000 miles of track in less than three years 1885–1888 which brought him immediate engineering fame. He was honored by scientific bodies throughout Europe including being appointed a vice-president of the International Congress of Geography 1891. He later became a planner and chief promoter of the Trans-Siberian railroad.</p><p>General Annenkoff was also involved in the annexation of Emirate of Bukhara as a client state of the Czar. Upon the death of Emir Mozaffar al-Din in 1885 General Annenkoff marched into Bukhara and put Emir's younger son on the throne. The Russian troops that were left behind placed the Emirate of Bukhara under control of the Russian Empire.</p><p>Family: Most prominent of General Annenkoff's sisters were Madame Marie de Struve wife of Karl de Struve Russian Ambassador to Japan the United States and The Netherlands respectively8 Elizabeth princess Galitzine and Alexandra Vicomtesse de Vogüé wife of French critic and author Vicomte Eugene Melchior de Vogüé. In 1878 the Vicomte de Vogüé and Miss Alexandra N. Annenkova were married at the Winter Palace St. Petersburg. In 1883 General Annenkov married Dagmar von Oesterreich 19 years old. The marriage was dissolved in 1889.</p><p>General Michael N. Annenkoff died in 1899 reportedly from suicide. There was suspicion that he had misappropriated funds from the Trans Caspian Railway.9 At the time he was a member of the Imperial Military Council in St. Petersburg.</p>‎

‎1948 - 1949 Original Handwritten Diary by an Attentive but Homesick United States Air Force Pilot Brought over to Japan to Assist in the Administration of the Post-World War Two American Occupation of Japan‎

‎TOKYO HONSHU ISLAND AMERICAN OCCUPIED JAPAN. Very Good. 1948. On offer is a diary kept by United States Air Force Pilot on assignment to occupied Japan only a few years after the end of World War 2. The diary begins in September 1948 and continues till March 1949. The author’s name was Roland W. Myers a member of the 385th Bombardment Group/549th Bomb Squadron. Myers would stay in the Air Force from 1948 till 1964 retiring as a Major. Myers leaves his home and wife in San Rafael California and sails for Japan on the USAT ‘Hope’. On the ship he gets his assignment. “In my orders I am being sent to the 13th Air Depot Honshu Island Japan.” Arriving in Japan Myers is assigned to “‘Air Control’ man power section which is headed by Lt. Col. Greck who real seem like a nice guy though I don’t know much about it now. Anyhow I have a nice desk job with good possibilities.” In Japan Myers has a good bit of trouble adjusting and comments often on is observations of the Japanese people and their customs especially when it comes to his experiences at church. His job in Tokyo seems to be mostly filing and processing requests. Though being a trained Air Force pilot he does occasionally go on long flights around Japan. In November he is transferred to the Far East Air Force base in Tokyo. He writes “my job will be TI & E Troop Information and Education officer.” The job turns out to be quite a lot of work and he has a good deal of trouble at first. Myers keeps a somewhat detailed account of each and every single day. Occasionally it is little more than a sentence stating he worked and how it went but more often than not the entries contain a number of sentences about the day’s events who he met what he did at work how long and where he flew etc. He also writes that he acts as a Defense Council for soldiers being court martialled. In mid-January Myers writes the his wife and children will be sailing to Japan to join him permanently. When she arrives about two weeks later the diary ends: “March 5 1948. Met Doris on the Sultan. Quite a boat. This line finishes this story for my life begins again with her and the children’s arrival.” In the back of the book are monthly tallies of cash expenditures that show exactly what Myers brought in on income what he spent on food clothes pleasure dentist etc. and the balance at the end of the month. It seems that his goal was to save $5000. The cash accounts go beyond the scope of the diary entries themselves keeping stock of income and expenditures up until October 1953. There are also a few pages where Myers has recorded information about his flying habits. It shows the date aircraft flown station left from number of landings and time of flight. From 1948 to 1950 Myers flew dozens and dozens of times. The covers and spine are in good condition showing only small amounts of wear on the soft black leather binding. The book is approximately 250 pages long with roughly 90 pages of writing. The pages themselves are in good condition showing little wear or discoloration throughout. The handwriting is clear and legible throughout in a combination of blue and black ink and occasionally pencil which has not faded. OVERALL: VG. Text: “Sept. 4 1948. Left the most wonderful wife in the world at 8:35 A.M. Not too bad for I tried to arrange to get there at the last min so the good-by would not drag out. Got on a bus and went into San Francisco where we got on the ship at Fort Mason USAT HS ‘Hope’ is its name. Not too big a ship I am afraid to say. Our quarters are not too good. This ship is set up for Hospital patients and no room for luggage. Left the dock at 1200 noon. Had a fire drill at 1:00 and got under way about 2:00. The sea became choppy almost immediately. Had 2 good meals. Went to an outdoor show and finally to bed at 11:30 - Many sick. felt rather good 2 or 3 times but nothing happen so far. It really got rough tonight.”; “Sept. 19. ‎C1915 ORIGINAL GROUP of DOCUMENTS PERTAINING to the MILITARY SERVICE of a LANCE CORPORAL in the 5TH BATTALION of the CANADIAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE 2ND BRIGADE A. K. a "TUXFORD'S DANDIES" WHO WAS SERIOUSLY WOUNDED and SPENT over a YEAR AT MILITARY HOSPITA‎

‎Good. 1936. On offer is a collection of 19 historically significant documents pertaining to military service of Herbert Arscott including a war-time photo a booklet with handwritten notes an active service pay book and post-war correspondence from the Board of Pension Commissioners for Canada. These documents represent milestones of his wartime experience and also of many Canadians fighting in the Great War. As the majority of Canadian soldiers at that time Herbert Arscott was born in Britain in the town of Wellington and enlisted almost immediately after the war was declared. He served at the 5th battalion of the 2nd infantry brigade hailed from western Canada and known as "Tuxford's Dandies" after the name of its first commander. Arscott made a few notes of dates and locations in a small book titled "Diary and memoranda": on September 17th he arrived at Quebec spent two days in smaller camps on the 22nd started training at Valcartier a training base for over 32000 volunteers from across Canada who were formed into the Canadian Expeditionary Force and eight days later boarded the SS Laplandia the largest in the transport convoy of the 31 ships set to cross the Atlantics. They arrived in Plymouth on October 14th and in early November he already was in Bailleul in Northern France which is the last note in the diary. The diary also contains a poem from George Cary Eggleston's "Rebel's collection" starting: "I was frightened for a wind crept along the grass…" Arscott's battalion entered the war theater in February 2015 participating in the Second Battle of Ypres from April 15th to May 25th it is not mentioned if Arscott was involved in that battle but the documents show that in the middle of May he was wounded. It is clear from his pay book and passes that he spent spring and summer of 1916 at the Granville Canadian Special Hospital in Ramsgate a seaside town in Kent a photograph showing him in a wheelchair most likely was taken in front of that hospital and then in Folkestone - a note on his pass says: "Recuperation. Excused wearing puttees" because of the leg wound. While in England he probably got married - in 1915 he named as his next of kin Mrs. Arscott C. N who lived in West Indies but later a line was added in his pay book with the name and address of his wife in Surrey. In 1918 he returned to Canada where he was taken to the Civil Service for six months but since 1920 all correspondence was addressed to the U. S. first to Brooklyn and later to Ohio. The post-war documents cover the period until 1952 and are related to his pension and insurance policy. The collection includes the following documents: 1. A red booklet titled "Diary and memoranda for 1914-1915: information relating to the wealth and population of the nations engaged and the strengths of their respective Armies and Navies Armaments etc. ; published by the Union Bank of Canada Valcartier Military Camp Branch. Contains hand-written notes. 31 pages size: 3'2x6'; condition: good 2. A booklet titled: Canadian Expeditionary Force 2nd infantry brigade headquarters and 5th Battalion : nominal roll of officers non-commissioned officers and men issued with militia orders 1915 25 p. size: 8'2x13'; condition: creases loose slight tears on the cover3. Pay book for use on active service containing records for 1915 - 1917. Size: 3.5'x5'' condition: good regular wear slight tears at edges4.3 passes dated May June and August 19165. A photo of a man in a wheelchair in front of what looks like a military hospital size: 3.2'x3.2' 6. Discharge certificate from Canadian Expeditionary Force slightly soiled at creases7. Certificate of qualification for temporary employment from Civil Service Commission of Canada dated October 25 1918. Condition: tears at creases slightly soiled size: 7.5'x11'8. A printed letter from the Board of Pension Commissioners for Canada in London on a letterheaded paper dated December 6 1918 containing 2 pages size: 8'x13'9. A printed letter addressed to Paymaster Casualties in Toronto dated August 31 1918 and signed by a representative of the Whitby Military Hospital condition: good size 6.5'x8'10. Adjustment of pension from the Board of Pension Commissioners for Canada and Authority for pension payment dated February 20th 1920 addressed to Mr. Herbert Arscott in Brooklyn N. Y. 2 pages 8'x13'11. A booklet titled: Information of former members of the Canadian and British Forces resident in the United States of America published in Ottawa in 1921 16 pages size 6.6'x10'; condition: tears at edges and creases water stains.12. On offer is a super grouping of one 1 TLS typed letter signed one 1 ephemeral piece being a news-clipping and a compact library of five 5 books one signed others limited editions by the noted American journalist novelist essayist playwright and poet Christopher Morley. This is an ideal 'starter' archive or gift for a new Morley collector. Details: 1. Morley Christopher Typed Letter Signed. Written April 1 1953 a mere four years before his death in Roslyn Heights NY on Morley's letterhead with his New York City address hand-canceled in pencil. The letter to 'George' seemingly an old college and perhaps fraternity brother turning down his request for Morley's presence at an event. Some first names mentioned enticingly interesting but obscure. Many penciled corrections to the typescript mostly proofreader's marks by Morley and instances of his 'backing up' the carriage and typing over characters. Ends with the typed "Christopher Morley" hand-canceled and replaced by hand in pencil by "Chris." This is a chatty personal manuscript relic which collectors and researchers will happily note with fascination that he typed the letter yet could not leave it until he had corrected and personalized it. Tri-folded to fit in an envelope slight creasing at the left edge at one fold head corners slightly rolled slightly toned. Better than VG. 2. Morley Christopher newspaper clipping of Morley's column "The Bowling Green" from New York Evening Post November 10 1923. Twenty column inches of relentless satire and wit related to the "Transactions of the III Hours for Lunch Club." For example it opens with "It is recorded in the private minutes of the Three Hours for Lunch Club that the first stroke in the great campaign for Making New York and Philadelphia Love One Another was a plenary success. It is felt by the Club that the proud reticent yet inwardly tender and genteel bosom of the Oatmeal City was moved and stirred by the sudden foray of that daring band of kinspirits." Morley started this column in 1920 and it was a fixture in the Post for some time. Verso of the clipping extols the virtues of the Packard auto with its powerful "straight eight" engine. Clipping browned creased to fit into an envelope. VG. 3. Morley Christopher The Goldfish Under the Ice Elkin Mathews & Marrot 1929 Limited Edition Hardcover 8vo 8" - 9" tall 27 pp. VG/ VG. Offsetting next to hinge in the front and back offsetting and tiny foxing next to hinge on inside edge only of head and tail of covers. Scattered tiny very occasional foxing to pages. Dust jacket has slight wear at corners very slightly darkened at all edges. Price on inside front flap canceled in light ink. Morley's story the story of the Mistletoe family's dog Frisky the real Frisky owned by Louise Morley's daughter and the Mistletoe family replicating Morley's own family and his adventures on Christmas Eve. The Introduction tells that Morley asked Frisky what to write about and was told to write about "the goldfish." The book is divided into three parts: Part one about Frisky; Part two about the G. S. S. G. B. Go to Sleep as Soon as you Go to Bed club that the Mistletoes founded; Part three about Frisky building a fire on the ice to warm the the goldfish underneath. Who knew that a goldfish could shout Edition of 530 this being signed by Morley and number 44 of 500 for sale. Set in Monotype Veronese and printed by Robert MacLehose & Co. at the University Press Glasgow Scotland. This limited edition copyright 1929 but issued 1930 is actually "first thus" compared to the first appearance of the work in McCall's Magazine December 1928. Lee 172. Head of text block cut otherwise uncut with rough edges to pages endpapers slightly larger than text block. Tan illustrated paper on boards illustration matches the same on the dust jacket. Illustrated pastedowns and endpapers same graphic device as illustration on boards and DJ. Publisher Elkin Mathews and Marrot was known for publishing belles lettres and were accommodating with this work. This book being from the Woburn Books series of 18 short novels/novellas of 500 copies each for sale. A fun book from the ever-eclectic Morley VG in a VG dust jacket in mylar. 4. Morley Christopher Another Letter to Lord Chesterfield Ben Abramson 1945 1st Edition Booklet 16mo 6" - 7" tall 6 pp. F/ Spine tail very slightly bumped. Morley's satirical essay on the pleasure and need or smoking by the general public. Written and typeset in archaic English in the manner of a letter from Samuel Johnson. In fact the title page indicates authorship by Samuel Johnson and Christopher Morley which of course is impossible given the 'letter's' date of February 7 1945. Pages numbered 3 through 6 though the essay consists of only 4 printed pages. Wraps formed by a single sheet of textured stiff brown paper folded in quarters saddle stapled to the inside crease with no staples showing at the spine head edge trimmed else uncut. Silhouette presumably of Johnson to front cover. Stated first edition. Printed "for" Ben Abramson at the Argus Bookshop his own shop famed for Morley-ana and promotion of Steinbeck's early work. The date of 1945 locates the place of publishing as New York where he resumed business after moving there from Chicago. This copy absolutely clean and Near Fine condition. 5. Morley Christopher Friends Romans. The Ampersand Club 1940 Limited Edition Hardcover Small 8vo 7½" - 8" tall VG/ VG Book is sun-faded at the very edge of the spine tail and more so at the spine head. Dust jacket darkened along the spine tiny chips to head and tail of spine 1 1/2" closed tear from the spine tail proceeding up the front cover small light blue mark to front. Christopher Morley's speech at the 50th anniversary of the Minneapolis Public Library and the 5th anniversary of Morley's membership in The Ampersand Club he being the one who suggested the name of the club devoted to printing and the art of the book. The first publication of The Ampersand Club and this one being one of an edition of 535 copies. A rambling discourse on life but somehow tied together with a topical thread of books and the library. Author is well known for his books Parnassus on Wheels and The Haunted Book Shop along with dozens of other Printed devices in read at the head of each beginning chapter page. In thin blue cloth on boards title in printed panel to front printed panel to spine. Sharp corners clean. Conservatively Very Good condition and approaches Very Good . A still-attractive Very Good DJ in mylar. 6. Morley Christopher The Haunted Bookshop Doubleday Page & Company 1921 Hardcover 12mo 7" - 7½" tall 289 pp. VG/ Gilt dulled on spine head and tall of spine slightly rubbed. A bit of faintly-browned offsetting to pastedowns and endpapers. The follow-up novel to Morley's "Parnassus On Wheels." After settling down Helen McGill now Helen Mifflin and Roger Mifflin open the bookshop Parnassus At Home which of course is the haunted bookshop. Intrigue and mystery ensue along with books danger a dog and quirky protagonists. Red cloth on boards with gilt title to spine and Morley's initials to front cover. This title from Doubleday's uniform edition in 12mo. 19211918. A clean nice conservatively VG copy. 7. Told in the first person by Helen it's her adventure in independence idealism and literature. Charming and I usually avoid the word but charming in a good way. A humorous fast read that's the precursor to Morley's "The Haunted Bookshop." Red cloth on boards with gilt title to spine and Morley's initials to front cover. A very nice collector's-quality copy -- scarce in jacket. ".John Marsh graduated from Harvard in 1823. He was the first schoolmaster in Minnesota. He wrote a dictionary and a grammar of the Sioux language. He married a beautiful half-breed -- French and Indian -- and by her had a son whom he believed dead for many years ultimately to find him begging at his door unaware that he besought his own father. John Marsh was an Indian agent; some of his acts incited Indian wars; some of them terminated such wars. He traded furs ran a store into bankruptcy and then started on the long trek over the Santa Fe Trail to California. Without having studied medicine he acted as a doctor in Los Angeles in 1836 -- the first in California. He became a cattle baron participating in the revolutions which preceded California's entrance into the Union which he helped to effect. He discovered gold. He was finally murdered leaving a vast fortune hidden undiscovered to this day. John Marsh's life story is better than fiction. So also is the story of his time of the life on our Western frontier and in California before the days of '49."
