‎MARGARET MATILDA HARDIE, [MRS ROBERT ALEXANDER HARDIE]‎

‎1925 ORIGINAL UNCOMMON EAST TO WEST MANUSCRIPT TRAVEL DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A NOTED METHODIST MISSIONARY'S WIFE ON A TRIP BACK HOME TO AMERICA WHERE THE WORK OF CHRISTIAN OUTREACH CONTINUES‎

‎SEOUL KOREA TO NEW YORK CITY. Very Good. 1925. On offer is a fascinating original 1925 - 1926 manuscript travel diary handwritten by Ontario Canada born Margaret Matilda Hardie nee Kelley 1863 - 1946 wife of Robert Alexander Hardie also born in Ontario 1865 - 1946 a renowned Southern Methodist medical missionary to Seoul Korea in the early 20th Century. The Hardie's contribution to Korea was noted in the book 'The Role of Robert Alexander Hardie in the Korean Great Revival and the Subsequent Development of Korean Protestant Christianity' by Chil-Sung Kim. Uniquely this travel diary dated December 23 1925 to June 11 1926 concerns the Hardie's 4 month furlough trip back to the USA from Korea via the western route through the Middle East and Europe and then some time in the USA. The wonderment of diaries written by the wives of important men is that the diary is in fact about Robert as much as Margaret. Historians and researchers of Christian outreach in Korea will find this book a dual treasure: an East to West travel diary and six weeks of the Hardie's work in the USA. In fact no sooner do they return than they meet at the Korea Club and after a brief rest Robert heads for Memphis on ministry work. The opening entry begins "We left Seoul on Dec. 23rd. A large crowd was at the station to see us off." The diary goes on to relate the Hardie's voyage to Hiroshima Japan and the train ride to Kobe where they board the SS Macedonia bound for Shanghai China. From there it's on to Singapore the Bay of Bengal Colombo in Ceylon Sri Lanka Aden the coast of Africa and the Red Sea the Suez Canal Port Said Egypt Jerusalem and Bethlehem in the Holy Land present-day Israel Athens Greece Naples Rome Pisa Florence Italy Paris France London England Edinburgh and Glasgow Scotland Belfast and Dublin Ireland and then back to London for the Atlantic Ocean crossing to New York where they arrive on April 28 1926 after a journey of just over four months. The remainder of the diary concerns the Hardies' travels and doings in the USA. The 6.25" x 4" diary book itself is of Japanese manufacture and comes in a slip sleeve. Substantial internal context clues clearly indicate that this journal was written by Cassandra Swasey Stevens 1818-1901. Cassandra was the descendant of two important early New Hampshire families. On her fathers side Cassandra was a descendent of Ebenezer Swasey and on her mothers side she was a descendant of Daniel Ladd. In 1846 Cassandra became the second wife of Ebenezer Stevens a prosperous local blacksmith and businessman. Mr. Stevens was a Colonel in the New Hampshire militia and also served as a Justice of the Peace. He was one of New Hampshires electors for Honest Abe Lincoln in the 1860 election. SEE BIO NOTES BELOW FOR MORE ON EBENEZERS BUSINESS MILITARY AND POLITICAL CAREER. The Stevens family lived in the village of Meredith in Belknap County New Hampshire. Cassandra S. Stevens and Ebenezer Stevens were parents to Alice S. Stevens 1849-1935. Ebenezer also had three children from his marriage to his first wife Therina Stevens nee Osgood who died in 1845. At least one of his children from that marriage Celestia lived with Cassandra and Ebenezer. Cassandra kept this diary from 1882 to 1885 when she was 64 to 67 years old. Entries are not made for every day but there is a flow to Cassandras writing and the effect is to give a very good overall sense of life in this northern corner of rural New England. In the opening pages she describes how this little book was made by her uncle. After her uncle passed away she took it and excising several of her uncles pages used it for herself: I have just taken this little blank book made and once used by my dead uncle Tim Ladd as a diary. I had cut out what he had written fearing it would some time meet the eye of those that do not love his memory as I do Mar 14 1882. The opening entries describe her intense worry for her adult daughter Alice who is in the late stages of pregnancy and references Alices husband Henry William Lincoln about whom she only refers to as Mr. Lincoln: Pleasant sunny day though cold and sleighing bad as usual at this season. Mr. Lincoln just called. Says all well at home. I shall feel so relieved when Alice gets through her confinement Mar 14 1882. She recounts an accident with her horse when returning from a visit to Alice: We have just returned from Alices. Went up after meeting. Very bad sleighing half bare ground and Billy fell down and broke the shafts and frightened me very much Mar 19 1882. Alice gives birth to a daughter named Mary Alice on March 23 1882 and Cassandra goes on to enjoy watching Mary Alice and her siblings grow up: Mr. Lincoln brought by Alice Eben her grandsonand dear baby Mary Alice down this afternoon. The first time the dear little one had been down. Cassandra her granddaughter one of Alices older children stayed down last night. It was the annual Rail Road meeting today May 29 1882. She recounts the deaths of many member of family and of the community and it is clear she is affected by these: Received a letter from Mary this morn saying that Mr. Stowell is very sick and the Dr. Feared the worst. Had advised sending for Alice. Oh dear! God help poor Celestia and the girlsHis brother Charles is with them which will be a good help and comfort to Celestia I think Feb 10 1883 BIO NOTE: Mr. Stowell refers to Edward Stowell who was the husband of Cassandras step-daughter Celestia. A day to remember. Mr. Stevens went to Laconia. Came home on the noon train about two o'clock. Mrs. Wiggin called and brought a Telegraph dispatch to him saying "Your brother hung himself today about noon." Fanny was the first to find him hanging in the barn and took him down herself. It had been barely 1/2 an hour since he was out of her sight. It must have been a sudden impulse for him as he ate his dinner and then just went down to the barn and done the awful deedSo much sickness all around us and so much death." Mar 15 1883. BIO NOTE: Paul Stevens was Ebenezers baby brother born in 1818. Fanny was one of his sisters. Cassandra is a staunch Republican which makes sense given her husbands political involvement see BIO NOTE below. She writes of her disappointment when Democrat Grover Cleveland gets elected President. Cassandras last entry recounts a visit from her daughter and grandchildren and also references her husband Col. Ebenezer Stevens: Mr. L. Alice and the children and Stella all came down to church today and stopped to supper. Cass was here came down yesterday. It was her grandfathers birthday 75 years old. She brought him a lamp shade and the other children sent him a cake. Celestia and Mary both sent him handkerchiefs and collars May 10 1885. This is an outstanding piece of local history. For a historian it is rich in detail of life in this small rural New Hampshire community in the late 1800s. It is also a superb resource for genealogists who are researching New England families. Her warmth shines through and her journal is easy pleasant reading. It is no surprise then that the University of New Hampshire has a substantial collection of Ebenezer and Cassandras diaries which cover years not covered by this diary. EBENEZER STEVENS 1810-1901 BIO NOTES: Ebenezer Stevens was an active Republican interested in militia matters. He became a colonel and a brigade and division inspector. He served three years as an elected selectman and held the commission of justice of the peace. He was a Presedential elector for Honest Abe Lincoln in 1860 and a selectman of Meredith New Hampshire during the Rebellion. A devout Baptist he was connected with the Free-Will Baptist Church as a trustee of the New Hampton seminary. He was one of the incorporators and served as president and treasurer of the Meredith Mechanic Association; one of the incorporators and trustees of the Meredith Village Savings-Bank; one of the directors of the Belknap County Bank Laconia and also a trustee of Laconia Savings-Bank. This journal is handmade using trimmed pages and having a cover made out of a larger sheet of heavier paper folded to form a cover. The pages were then stitched through the cover. It measures about 6.25 inches by 4 inches. The diary is in very good condition It contains 88 pages and is 100% complete. The handwriting is quite legible.; Manuscripts; 16mo 6" - 7" tall; 88 pages .</p> paperback‎

‎The Correspondence of Charles Darwin Volume 15 1867‎

‎Cambridge University Press. Very Good with no dust jacket. 2006. Hardcover. 052185931X . Tight square unmarked book in clean black cloth. ; 6.14 X 1.56 X 9.21 inches; 750 pages; During 1867 Darwin intensified lines of research that were to result in two important publications Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex and Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals. Darwin circulated a questionnaire on human expression asking his established contacts to pass it on to their acquaintances with the result that he began to receive letters from an even more diverse and far-flung network of correspondents than had previously been the case. Convinced that human descent was strongly influenced by sexual selection he also started to ask his correspondents about sexual differences in animals and birds. At the same time he was working on the proof-sheets of another major work Variation of Animals and Plants under Domestication while negotiating almost weekly with French German and Russian translators. . Woodsworth a founding member and leader of the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation forerunner of the New Democratic Party and member of Parliament was a social policy pioneer who promoted human welfare and rights over interests of property or finance. The essays in Human Welfare Rights and Social Activism explore the contemporary significance of Woodsworth's human rights framework by examining current social welfare objectives. Canadians continue to grapple with the enduring question of how to accommodate and reconcile social diversity and difference while articulating a common interest and advancing human rights both domestically and internationally. These interdisciplinary essays address such issues as globalization labour rights and law the gendered and racialized dimensions of transnational labour the relationship between human rights social programs and social rights and the emergent cultural politics of difference. Taken as a whole these essays pursue a careful consideration of the historical and contemporary exclusions to polity that occur around gender ethnicity class and race. . ‎Ezra Skow, Co I, 56th Regiment Infantry‎

‎1919 Diary of American Soldier from the 56th Infantry Ezra Skow Stationed in Occupied Germany following WWI Describing the Duties and Daily Life of a US Soldier‎

‎Coblenz Germany Benton Pa: Occupied Germany Coblenz Benton PA 56th Infantry. Good. 1919. Softcover. On offer is a superb pocket notebook kept by an American soldier in occupied Germany in the months immediately following World War One WW1. The author of this notebook is Ezra Skow. Little is known of Skow's early life. He was born in 1892 and enlisted in the U. S. Army in about September 1918 at the age of 25 or 26. Burial records in Benton PA indicate that he was attached to the 156th Infantry Regiment. However there was no 156th Infantry in the United States Order of Battle in WWI. In his notebook Skow records that he served in the 56th Infantry. This accords with the record of service of the 56th Infantry Regiment. The 56th Infantry Regiment was a regular infantry regiment in the United States Army. Its roots date back to the American Civil War where it served in the North's Army of the Potomac. It originated from personnel of the 17th Infantry Regiment in 1917 and fought in the region of Metz during World War I. In April 1919 a battalion of the 56th entered Metz as an honour guard for the Commanding General of the American Expeditionary Force John J. Pershing. Skow was married before joining the army. His wife Laura lived until 1987 passing away at the age of 93. Skow himself died in 1947 at the age of 57. His entries take the form of letters to his wife. They cover the period Jan 11 1919 through June 25 1919. In his diary Skow records several of the towns and cities in which his unit was stationed including Metz France Mulheim Metternich and other places in and around the city of Coblenz Germany. His entries speak about the day-to-day existence of a private soldier: "This is some place. Gee I wish I was home now. I would tell you a lot. The women are carrying their things on their back when they go to the store" Jan 13; ". I wrote you a letter tonight and send you the worlds clock too as I saw that today over at the city. And I was to see Charley Chaplin in the front line trenches and it was good. I would like to see you now. . I sit here at a Dutch table now writing notes and the Dutch man is reading the paper and his wife is talking out of the front window and you can see they are like but not quite as bad. Your Husband Ezra Skow xxxx" May 2; ". I was over to Coblenz today and wrote you a letter. And it is a fine day. I didn't do very much today. But believe me I would love to be home to loved you again. As I am getting tired of this life and will be able to tell you all about it when I get home . Your most lonely husband this side of the water. Ezra Skow" May 12. On June 4th he writes that he has learned his unit is going to be leaving the Coblenz area and hopefully heading home to the United States. In fact this is exactly what happened. By June 23rd he is in Fort Dix NJ and on the 25th he is out of the army. : ". I am out of the army now. Coming home to you dear." June 25. There are several other pages of note which include among other things the names and addresses of several other men - likely men he met and befriended. For a historian this is an outstanding piece of primary source material. It details the very ordinary day-to-day life of a soldier in WWI capturing his duties and his longing for home. For a regimental historian this fills in details of the history of their regiments. For a genealogist it offers some links to other Americans who served in that regiment. Measuring 5.25 inches by 3.5 inches this notebook contains 72 pages and is 85% complete. The book is in good condition. The binding and pages are intact. His handwriting is cramped but generally legible. ; Manuscripts; 24mo 5" - 6" tall; 72 pages; Keywords: handwritten manuscript document letter autograph writer hand written documents signed letters manuscripts historical holograph writers autographs personal memoir memorial antiquité contrat vélin document manuscrit papier antike brief pergament dokument manuskript papier oggetto d'antiquariato atto velina documento manoscritto carta antigüedad hecho vitela documento manuscrito papel 56th Infantry World War One US Army American soldier Occupied Germany . ‎United States: Northern American College Strip Club Art School Young Dreamer Goals. Fair with no dust jacket. 1989-1990. Hardcover. On offer is a quite revealing look inside the life of a self-aware young college student experiencing the challenges stepping out from the shadow of his home life. The diary which covers the time period from Aug 14 1989 to June 6 1990 measures 8 inches by 5.5 inches and contains 160 pages. It is 100% complete. The covers are in very good condition. The glue from the binding has dried and many of the pages are loose but all are intact. The writing is quite legible. The author of the diary is John Boggs. Casual research has discovered no additional biographical information on him. In 1989 he is attending an unnamed college in the northern United States. The entries detail his daily experiences. To say that daily life was a roller coaster would be an understatement. Although 18 years old his writing is articulate if profane. The reader is taken on a journey through Bogg's emotional ups and downs as much through his day-to-day activities. Boggs has a sardonic wit and his entries are introspective laced with liberal doses of black humour. For example: "All this useless shit is going to make my head explode. . This dump is supposed to help you find yourself but I'm getting more and more confused…" Oct 19 1989. Boggs has two roommates - Ralph and Baker. Although they get along sort of he definitely has a low opinion of their abilities: "Ralph and Baker don't have to do this keep a diary. Because they have a routine. Eat sleep go to Dixies a local strip bar read filthy comics and novels play music and games jack off for hours in the shithouse and have their work done for them. I wish I could organize like that." Oct 6 1989. His mood rises and falls in lockstep with his grades: "I'm so fucking happy that I actually did a happy dance with Ralph. I got straight A's all day." Aug 24 1989; "What the hell do these teachers know I spent hours of studying to get completely shit on! . I don't think I'll make it another 5 months.God! Why have you forsaken me" Dec 11 1989. In a matter of months he goes from meeting a girl to being madly in love with her to doubting her to finding her with another boy to despising her - a true adolescent roller coaster! ".I wish Rose was here. God I miss her even though she was a complete whore who fucked around with every geek jock motorhead and possibly professor in this lousy fucking college." Dec 7 1989; "I'm slowly going through denerdification." Mar 12 1990. At the end of his diary Boggs who has included many pen sketches in his diary states that he wants to find a cheap but good art college and study commercial art. Let's hope he 'found' himself in his art. For a social historian this is an excellent look inside the emotional world of a late adolescent who can write in an articulate albeit sarcastic manner. A blend of self-awareness black humour and the angst of adolescence make this a wonderful chronicle of a young man's steps into adulthood.; Manuscripts; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 160 pages; Keywords: handwritten manuscript document letter autograph writer hand written documents signed letters manuscripts historical holograph writers autographs personal memoir memorial antiquité contrat vélin document manuscrit papier antike brief pergament dokument manuskript papier oggetto d'antiquariato atto velina documento manoscritto carta antigüedad hecho vitela documento manuscrito papel College Experience American teenager Coming of age Americana 20th Century USA Social politics young dreamers young artist American Universities Northern United States Northern US Colleges academic integrity . ‎Mary Lipshultz‎

‎1933 Diary of a Young Los Angeles California Women Coming of Age During the Great Depression‎

‎Los Angeles: Earthquake. Good with no dust jacket. 1933. Softcover. On offer is a very personal account of a year in the life of a young woman living in Los Angeles in the midst of the Great Depression. The author of the diary is Mary Lipshultz. Casual research has not turned up any additional biographical date on her. She was living at home with her parents in Los Angeles California. Context suggests that she was in her late teens or very early twenties. In her diary Mary Lipshultz is totally consumed with her relationships with girlfriends and boyfriends. She has apparently graduated from high school. She spends most of her days doing various household tasks. Although her family does not appear to be wealthy they are comfortable and her father has regular work enabling both Mary and her mother to frequently go shopping. She does look for work but is generally unsuccessful: "In the morning I went to look for work alone but had no success" Feb 13; "I went down to Morries' store early to see about a job. He told me he didn't need me." Apr 15. Eventually she found work in Broadway's one of the premier department store chains of the time. Broadway's was later acquired by Federated Department Stores and stores were merged or re-branded as Macy's or Bloomingdales. "Francis and I went to work in the Broadway. I was scared. Worked at Draperies on the 7 th fl." July 17. Lipshultz grew up in the Great Depression. By 1933 it was firmly entrenched in the United States. Franklin Roosevelt became President and though hampered by the Dust Bowl began the process of rebuilding the American economy - a process that would last a decade until the United States entered WWII. She notes a 'bank holiday' which had everyone worried: "Today the Banks declared a legal holiday. Everyone worried" Mar 2. This entry was discussing the Emergency Banking Act one of FDR's first projects in the first 100 days of his presidency in an effort to address banking failures and other economic woes that gripped the country. As noted above Lipshultz was completely focused on personal and family matters in her diary. As one might expect from a girl her age social relationships were paramount: "Morrie Lerner called me and made a date with me for Monday night. Oh! Diary dear please make him like me! " Jan 12; "In the evening Lou came up unexpectedly. He gets sweeter all the time. We two act terrible. I'll have to try and cut it out. We're going a little too far" July 6; "In the afternoon Lee came up. She is as nice as ever & is making every effort to get together again. In the evening Lou came up and he asked me to go steady again. I won't ever go steady with him as we have too long to wait. I will probably change my mind a dozen times but we will see" July 22. Although almost exclusively focuses on her own personal experiences she does note some major external events. For example. She records the major Long Branch earthquake: "About 6 p. M. We had a terrible earthquake. . It kept shaking all the time and as Pa was at Murrietta Hot Springs we went to Fays. Nervous. We spent the night outside." Mar 10. The inauguration of Franklin Roosevelt on March 4th 1933 passes without comment. For a social historian this is an excellent window into the world of a young American girl in the depths of the Great Depression and through her eyes the wider community in which she lives. A researcher into Women's Studies would find this a terrific description of the life and expected roles of women at this period of time in America. This would all begin to change within a decade. Measuring 6.5 inches by 4.5 inches it contains 183 pages and is 100% complete. The covers are in good condition with signs of wear on the corners and the spine. The pages are in good condition and the hand writing is legible. ; Manuscripts; 16mo 6" - 7" tall; 183 pages; Keywords: Handwritten manuscript document letter autograph writer hand written documents signed letters manuscripts historical holograph writers autographs personal memoir memorial antiquité contrat vélin document manuscrit papier antike brief pergament dokument manuskript papier oggetto d'antiquariato atto velina documento manoscritto carta antigüedad hecho vitela documento manuscrito papel Great Depression Women's Studies Women's Experiences Teenage Girls 20th Century Americana Broadway's department store Macy's Bloomingdale's Long Branch Earthquake coming of age dating during the depression dating in America job search . ‎James Roger‎

‎1895-1915 Handwritten Diaries Chronicling Scotland to USA Immigration and the Subsequent Daily Life of a Politically and Religiously Involved Immigrant in New Hampshire USA‎

‎Edinburgh Scotland And New Hampshire Usa: United States Immigrant From Scotland SS Nebraska Voyage. Good. 1895-1915. Softcover. On offer is a set of three diaries of James Roger a British immigrant to the United States in the late 19th century. Roger was born in England in 1841. He was a clerk in Birmingham England and entered the railway service in 1866 becoming the station master at Rosslyn Castle near Edinburgh for 31 years. He was married in 1867 and he and his wife Margaret had six children. He was ordained an elder in the Established Church Presbyterian of Scotland in 1878 and elected a member of the General Assembly in 1896. He came to America in 1897 and settled in New Ipswich New Hampshire where he had a duck farm. He also served as a member of the school board a superintendent of the Congregational Sunday School and a deacon. He passed away in 1916 at the age of 75. There are three journals that he kept. The first one cover the time period from July 1st 1895 to Oct 6th 1897. It includes the daily log of his journey via steamship to the United States. The second journal is a pocket notebook that contains entries from the years 1902 until 1911. The third journal covers the year 1915. The first journal contains an account of his daily life in Scotland from July 1895 until Oct. 1897 The entries are brief many just one-line entries. The entries for each month are followed by a brief summary of the month: "Dull then fair. International boat race. Defender won by 9 minutes. Harvest cutting going on all around" Sept 7 1895; "In Roslin on the 14 th we had the unusual spectacle of a military funeral. Abram Pryde a volunteer was borne to his long home with all the pomp and parade attending a soldier's funeral. The Band playing "Land o the Leal" whilst his comrades marched with arms reversed and over his grave they fired their parting farewell" Oct 14 1895. He notes events that are happening in other parts of the British Empire: "The Ashanti Campaign came to a bloodless termination. King Prempeh surrendered on the arrival of the troops at Kumasi and has been brought to the Coast a prisoner" Jan 1896. On Oct 15th 1897 at 56 years of age Roger emigrated from Scotland to the United States with his wife and his six children. He describes in some detail their crossing on the steamer S. S. State of Nebraska ".My daughter the afternoon fell down the stairs of the companionway and hurt her ankle her mother turned sick at four. David was squeamish and poor Hamish who had suffered from asthma was very much exhausted. I was up all night amongst them…" Oct 1897. The second the diary continues from 1905 until 1911 and is an account of his daily activities including many references to his friends and family. There are many gaps in time between entries but overall they convey a sense of the daily pattern of his life: ".Went to depot and met Mt. Milne a Scotsman from Waverley Edinburgh. Left at 11: 47 for NY. Reached there at 3: 30. Took car to Ferry. Got tram to Oakdale 4: 35. Got there at 6 pm. Met by Sandy and Mary his son-in-law and grand daughter. Went to Masonic meeting" Oct 17 1910. The third diary covers the year 1915 and describes a good deal of New Hampshire political activity. These three journals offer a succinct description of daily life in Scotland and in New England. For a historian they offer details on daily life at that time in both locations. As he notes many friends and acquaintances they would be a valuable resource for genealogists A local historian would find the various discussions and motions listed in the third diary an interesting look at local politics in the early days of the 20th century. The first diary measures 7 inches x 4 inches and is in good condition though the cover shows some wear. It contains 184 pages and is 70% complete. The second and third diaries both measure 4 inches x 3 inches. They each contain 112 pages and are 70-75% complete. These diaries are also in good condition. ; Manuscripts; 32mo 4" - 5" tall; Keywords: HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUITÉ CONTRAT VÉLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGÜEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL Rosslyn Castle New Hampshire S. ‎Chief Engineers and Ship Masters‎

‎1938 Incredible Engineering Log Books of Three Merchant Vessels Sunk in World War Two by the Chief Italian Engineer: M. N. Cellina M. N. Fella and M. N. Rialto Includes Deck Logs and Mechanical Engineering Logs‎

‎Italy Costa Rica Libya Newfoundland: Società Italia Flotte Reuniti Italia Società Anonima Di Navigazione. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1938. Hardcover. On offer is an outstanding collection of three engineering log books of vessels sunk in World War Two WWII. The log books are those of three ships of the Italian merchant navy MN Cellina MN Fella and MN Rialto. In addition to the main or Deck Log maintained by the ship's Master a separate log was maintained by the Chief Engineer for the recording of all vital information about the ship's engines mechanical systems pressures operating temperatures etc. It may also contain technical drawings and specifications. The Chief Engineer had overall responsibility for the Engineering Department and reported directly to the Master or Captain. In 1938 the Italian merchant fleet numbered 1050 vessels grossing 3180000 tons. By comparison the British merchant fleet numbered 9050 ships grossing 20 150000 tons. In 1932 due to the depression and widespread unemployment of Italian ships the major Italian shipping companies were combined into one state-controlled syndicate under the name Società Italia Flotte Reuniti. By 1937 this syndicate had made rapid recovery and repaid the Government bonds which had supported it. It was then changed into a Limited Company under the name Italia Società Anonima di Navigazione. These three ships - Cellina Fella and Rialto were part of this syndicate. The ships plied the world's major shipping routes including the Mediterranean Atlantic and Pacific. In 1940 most Italian ships were requisitioned for military service and by 1945 few were left afloat. Among the losses were these three ships. M. N. CELLINA was built in 1926. She was seized as a prize by Britain at Gibralter in 1940. She was renamed EMPIRE SAILOR and sailed as part of the British Merchant Navy. In 1942 she was torpedoed and sunk off Cape Race Newfoundland with a loss of 22 lives. M. N. FELLA was built in 1926. In 1940 she was interned at Costa Rica. In 1941 to avoid her capture she was burnt by her crew. M. N. RIALTO was built in 1926. In 1941 she was torpedoed and sunk by British aircraft off the coast of Libya. Each of these log books contains detailed descriptions of the engineering aspects of the relevant ship. They are written in Italian. For the most part the pages are typed resulting in excellent readability. In addition to the notes there are engineering drawings of various components blueprints and performance graphs. They also contain photographs of each ship. The CELLINA's log book details her voyage in 1935 from Trieste Italy to Vancouver Canada The FELLA's log book contains a number of newspaper clippings including some full-page articles all of various aspects of the shipping business. Interestingly there are two pages of notes written in English regarding spare equipment These are an excellent reference pieces. Easily translated they give an authoritative picture of the engineering features of each of these ships. A naval historian would find these useful in filling in gaps in knowledge of these ships as their records were mostly lost when the ships themselves were lost. A naval architect or engineer would find these to be and excellent reference work as to how the engineering and mechanical systems were built and maintained in ships at this time. All three log books measure 11 inches x 8.5 inches. They are 148 pages plus inserts and can be considered 50% complete since entries are on one side of each page only. Covers bindings and pages are Good in all three log books. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 444 pages; Keywords: handwritten manuscript document letter autograph writer hand written documents signed letters manuscripts historical holograph writers autographs personal memoir memorial antiquité contrat vélin document manuscrit papier antike brief pergament dokument manuskript papier oggetto d'antiquariato atto velina documento manoscritto carta antigüedad hecho vitela documento manuscrito papel MN Cellina; MN Fella; MN Rialto; Empire Sailor; Società Italia Flotte Reuniti; Italian Merchant Marine; Merchant Ships Lost in WWII; Battle of the Atlantic; convoy system World War Two Naval Ships Second World War European Ships War Ships Battles Lost at Sea .
