Vol.III front board is almost detached from the spine but still present. Each volume features 2 bookplates; the first a small circular plate depicts a kneeling camel beneath a Latin inscription; the second depicts an arm sheathed in armour holding three ears of corn beneath a Latin inscription. Full deep blue crushed morocco with gilt spine titles 5 raised bands gilt spine titles. Turn-ins gilt ruled with decorative corners also the interiors of the boards are done with a central vellum panel decorated in a design of red orange and green with gilt borders and floral motifs. Silk endpapers. This "Edition Magnifique" has a hand-painted title pg of colored paints on papyrus with the information that it was "bound especially for H. T. Goodwin by Dana Estes & Company Boston 1901." The numerous B&W plates are presented in three states on india paper plain wove and japon with tissue interleves each bearing the portrait title. Condition is all 12 volumes is VERY GOOD ; the morocco is not dry or cracking is still supple and good. A number of the covers have some very faint damp-spotting though not all and there is no spotting to any of the spines. The gilt is all bright. The bindings are all tight with no incipent cracking. Vols. 8 and 12 have a tiny nick to the spine head. Text is all uniformly excellent; bright and clean with no foxing or damage. A few blank end pgs may have some very minor foxing. Bio. Fine Bindings. ANNAPOLIS MARYLAND MD USA US NAVAL ACADEMY. Good. 1907. On offer is a super original 1907 manuscript diary handwritten by Annapolis Maryland Naval Academy student H. A. Leaphart who wrote of his studies drills classes and daily life from January through June 6th. Casual research reveals that Midshipman Leaphart died one month later at home in Missouri. As the obituary below makes clear Leaphart's diary is a record of his formidable academic improvement in achieving 13th in his class. Please see the obituary that follows. A native of Brookfield Missouri his father C.H. Leaphart a railroad engineer at times H.A. writes a line often full entries detailing fire and steam drills sword exercise dancing math and the manner of daily life amongst the other plebes and midshipmen. The 2 days to a page 2¾ x 5¾ inch leather diary about 80% full has some marks on covers some discoloration spine cracked at front pages of book but pages are intact. Overall G. OBIT. KANSAS CITY STAR: July 5. Midshipman H. A. Leapheart who died while at his home in Brookfield Mo. was a member of the last year third class at Annapolis and had just taken the examination for promotion into the second class for the coming year. Reports of the June examinations which have just reached the department from Rear Admiral Sands superintendent of the Naval academy show that on the examination Leapheart made a notable record jumping over the heads of a number of his fellow classmen and reaching thirteenth place on the list. Addresses to the company his correspondent was likely his relation Nathan Fuller Mathewson born: 7 Sep 1814 Warren RI Marriage: Susan Green Wightman about 1840 in Providence RI Died: 27 May 1901 Jeweler and partner from circa 1835 to 1848 with Bradford Allen in Providence RI as MATHEWSON & ALLEN listed in the 1836 city directory with a shop on the corner of Pine and Rhodes Streets regarding the state of his gold and silver trade dealings. He reports he has had almost no business in Mobile but frequently mentions he expects better in New Orleans. He also notes business dealings between Rhode Island New York and Charleston South Carolina too. Some small loss from opening at the seal and a mouse has done some nibbling. Overall G. NEW YORK NEW YORK ALABAMA 1903. On offer is an interesting modest group of 17 letters most typed and some manuscript written by Francis G. Caffey an Alabama native a lieutenant colonel during the Spanish-American war a successful attorney and later a US federal judge. The letters dated 1903 through 1905 are for the most part legal and case matters with clients while he practised in New York but had many dealings in his home state. We note several letters are to a former CSA officer. Seventeen documents are signed and overall VG. Very Good. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Manuscript. unknown

CAPTAIN THOMAS CLARKE
1810 ORIGINAL ENIGMATIC SHIP'S LOG BOOK OF AN UNUSUAL RUSSIA AND NORWAY TO RHODE ISLAND VOYAGE
ASEA ABOARD THE NARRAGANSETT. Good. 1851. On offer is a fascinating though enigmatic and curious 1810 manuscript ship's log of Captain Thomas Clarke's return voyage from Russia and Norway to Bristol Rhode Island on the ship "Narragansett". Dated September through December 1810 in many ways this is a typical 'Age of Sail' ship's log book classically filled with daily data required of all formal logs: weather winds sail settings navigational details and entries related to observations and events on and about the ship in this interesting and unusual east to wet trans-Atlantic voyage in an early 19th Century merchant vessel however it appears the book was started mid trip and begins at sea. Curiously someone after the voyage excised very neatly every other page of the journal leaving 26 otherwise well filled pages out of 44 pages in the remaining portion of the book. 'Jan 24 Virginia G. Walker 2 years old. 28 Mr. Lancaster died this morning. 30 The coldest morning that has been for twenty years.' Then: 'January 6 1834 my Father if living would be one hundred and 12 years old today.' 'Feb 9 My husband is 66 years old this day. Mary Anne fell and broke her collarbone.' 1934 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT LETTER HANDWRITTEN BY A GRAND MANAN NEW BRUNSWICKER WHO REGALES HIS FRIEND WITH TALES OF WHALES AND RUM RUNNING ROCKEFELLERS
NORTH HEAD GRAND MANAN 1934. On offer is a super original 1934 letter handwritten James S. Quinn from North Head Grand Manan New Brunswick Canada. A two page letter musing on a few subjects; half a dozen whales moving among fishing boats a fisherman ran his boat onto the back of one whale while another man fired a rifle into another as well as mentioning the loss of fishing nets and gear to whales. Most interest Quinn also mentions rumour that alleges that Mr. Rockefeller and Allan Moses were using Rockefeller's island as a liquor supply for the States. Undoubtedly he is referring to John S. Rockefeller who purchased Kent Island and was the grandson of oil magnate William Rockefeller. Horizontal and vertical fold creases present with many small to medium tears along the folds. Single page handwritten on both sides approximately 8 1/2 by 11 inches. On Grand Manan Watch Repair Depot letterhead. Some wrinkling general toning and fading to the piece. Overall G. In 1980 Diana graduated from Woodlands Junior Secondary School in Nanaimo British Columbia on Vancouver Island Canada. Her photo first appears on page 19 where she is recognized on the 1978-79 Arts Honour Roll. On page 121 in the Band section appears a gorgeous head-shot of a young Diana playing the saxophone beneath which appears the caption 'Diana!'. Michelle Krall Diana's younger sister appears on page 106. Finally Diana's graduation photo and write-up appear on page 58. Beside her photo we read "Diana Piano resembles her Dad. In her spare time she eats and sleeps. Her life ambition is to replace Oscar Peterson. 'Way to go Diana!'". Diana's current global superstardom is clearly no accident! This slim volume of 91 pages is the definitive study of Dickens's novel "The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club" in its serial form. Containing illustrations and an introduction by the famous bookman A. Edward Newton this copy is one of 440 numbered and signed by both Eckel Dickens' bibliographer and Newton. The present copy is number 52 . It is bound in the original pictorial green cloth mimicking the parts covers of the novel. Also present is the original onion skin wrapper which has several tears but is complete and the original box. The box is quite worn and is lacking the side panels of the pull off cover albeit cover is intact and decorated with the same illustrations that adorns the cover of the book. A very scarce piece of Pickwickiana and itself a valuable reference source. Podeschi H161. A fine copy in a good wrapper and extremely scarce though worn box. Limted/numbered/signed. Cloth. Original red 1/4 pigskin with corner tips on red cloth boards. Faint seal of Anchor Line printed on cover and catalogue of the library of the steamship Belgravia printed on both inside covers. This is number 73 of 85 books in the ship's library. Built at Glasgow by D.& W. Henderson in 1881 she was pressed into service to India. After about 40 sailings she struck rocks at Sheep's Cove about half-a-mile inside Black Point near Saint John on May 22 1896. Four tugs couldn't budge her. Passengers and cargo were put ashore and she was auctioned off where she sat. Captain Laird opined the cause to be misreading of the compass. - Saint John Globe. The photo shows worn edges and there is a previous owner's name as well as general hand soil. A loving portrait of the princess by her sister and a most exciting provenance. A welcome gift for any collector of royalty or marine history. 415 pp. with substantial index. John Murray hardcover
