BUCHAREST ROMANIA. Very Good. 1999. On offer is a recent diary written in 1999 of an American missionarys trip to preach in Romania. The author is a Baptist from North Carolina and speaks Romanian fluently. The diary is written almost completely in English. It begins in November 17 1999: Be ready. Some of this will be written in Romanian.My plane ride to Bucharest was a good one. When I arrived in Buc. at OJP. I had to wait 4 hours for my luggage. Ghita said someone would me me at OJP and take me to the train station. That was not the case. Eventually I made it to the station and waited 4 hours for my train most of which I spent outside in a large covered area. It was very cold - about -5° or 30°F and I was prepared for 22°C or 70°F per Ghitas instructions. My train ride was overnight in a sleeper car. It was the bumpiest ride of my life. In Romania he soon begins travelling through the country preaching. Last night we preached in a church in Varadia which is a village with a creek that is used as a road. The church as freezing b/c the deacon lit the fire 2 hours late. What an experience! For supper we had sausage and head cheese made from a fresh killed hog. This morning we preached in Carbonari.Tonight we will be at Stiepari to preach at a church w/ about 115 people. Tomorrow I will visit the high school and then be back in Timioara on Monday night. In addition to writing about preaching to the Romanian people the author writes often of the food he eats and the kindness customs and eccentricities of the Romanian people. He stays often with a woman named Maria who is the sister-in-law of a friend back home: I am not sure that Maria is a Christian. This makes things tough to deal with at times. The other night I wanted to sue the phone which I said I had a phone card and she began telling me that I was supposed to give her money for staying there electricity food etc. Well this is right for me to give her money but not for her to demand it.I would rather her give her house for and expect nothing. This way the money I give is a gift - a thank you for allowing me to stay in the home.Do for others expecting nothing in Return. When you get something act as if it was not expected - Do things from the heart not out of personal gain. He also writes of the upcoming millennium and that it will be interesting to see what Y2K brings. Y2K experts have listed Romania as one of the countries they think will suffer the most. He also watches a game between an American team Crossfire a sports ministream team based in Asheville NC and a team from Timioara. I was able to sit w/ two Mormon friends I met one in Bucharest. I have been praying for the HS to work on his heart and show him the light. This is a good time for that - he has heard Crossfire present the gospel 2x and he is homesick. He also quotes some bible verses at length and does some time interpreting what he believes they mean. Most days he spends preaching at churches or joining Romanian Christian youth groups for bible study. On one of his last days in Romania he gets into a conflict with some locals who scam him out of some money: The conductor of my car said I needed to pay for the extra luggage. I refused b/c I already bought 2 tickets which makes my cabin 1st class by myself. He wasnt going to let me on but than he did BTW: all this time I am praying. Then the smecher con-man said I need to either purchase an extra baggage billet or buy him or his friends 3 of them a beer. I didnt buy them but gave the money so I wouldn't have any trouble. This is a part of Romania I despise. He spends the last few pages reflecting on his trip in Romania and quoting and interpreting the bible. This young man really pours his heart out for his love of God and the importance of his religious message. The book is a total of 108 handwritten pages out of a 160-page or so book. The diary is written in a Sainsbury Reporters Notebook. The pages turn from top to bottom not left to right. The size is roughly 8 x 5 inches. The pages are in good condition and all still attached to the ring binding. No wear or tear or discoloration. One or two pages are folded up and can be easily unfolded. The handwriting is clean and legible throughout in blue and black ink. 1911 SENSATIONAL SIGNIFICANT ORIGINAL TYPED MANUSCRIPT LOG BOOK DETAILING THE CALIFORNIA CONDUCTOR'S EXCURSION: A SUPERB UNIQUE PIECE OF AMERICAN RAILROADIANA BY AND FOR ULTIMATE TRAIN TRAVEL ENTHUSIASTS
NEW ORLEANS WASHINGTON DC NEW YORK USA. Very Good. 1911. On offer is a rare and absolutely outstanding train log detailing a nearly 10000 mile journey around the United States. The log book measures 11 inches by 8 inches and contains 60 typewritten pages. The heavy paper cover has a small tear but otherwise the journal is in excellent condition. E.M. Martin is the author of the California Conductor's Excursion or A Trip of 9800 Miles. The journal was written immediately following this 1911 odyssey. In 1911 between May 2nd and June 6th 110 railroad conductors from California boarded a California Conductors Special and embarked on an epic journey around the United States. The conductors were travelling with their wives and were members of El Capitan division No 115 of the Order of Railway Conductors ORC a labour union representing train conductors in the United States their destination was ORC National Convention held in Jacksonville in May 1911. In that month they would pass through 27 states and 2 foreign countries covering some 9800 miles. The Special consisted of an Observation Car a Dining Car 4 Sleeping Cars and 1 Baggage Car. Altogether they would travel on tracks owned by 17 different railroad companies. Some of the entries are quite terse: "Los Angeles May 6 Arrived here 7:30 A.M. and made a 25 min stop. Seven of us took an automobile ride through the principal parts of the city." Other entries are much more extensive such those for New Orleans Washington D.C. and New York City. "New Orleans May 6 Arrived here 8:30 A.M. . A crowd of us hired a sightseeing auto and saw the principal points of interest. The longest street also the principal street is called Canal St. It is four miles long. The highest part of the city is three feet below the level of the sea. We saw the Post Office building the cornerstone of which Henry Clay laid Liberty Monument and the Old St. Louis Hotel. . Don Pedro Emperor of Brazil was once its guest. Henry Clay was banqueted here on one occasion at a cost of $20000. Ex President McKinley was banqueted here on his first visit to New Orleans while Governor or Ohio. . While the Hotel was used as the State Capital Gen Phil Sheridan during the troublesome period of reconstruction drove out the Legislature in session at the point of the bayonet. ."; "Washington May 11 . we had no time to lose as the reception at the White House was from five to six. From the reception hall we were ushered out upon the lawn in single file in the President's private grounds where we were presented to the President and Mrs. Taft who stood upon the lawn waiting to welcome us. One of the guards served Mrs. Taft and she drank with us. . After luncheon the waiters passed cigars to the men . While being served the President sat upon a lawn seat talking ." He describes in detail the rooms they visited in the White House as well as other places of interest in the city. They spent several days in New York City and toured extensively. Martin has a sharp eye for detail as this example illustrates: ". One of the main parlours is trimmed in dark Spanish Oak with tapestry panels. The ceiling is decorated with beautiful paintings. In the Louis XVI Dining Room the wainscoting and pilasters are of Circassian walnut enclosing panels of golden silk tapestry." His descriptions in many cases conjure up images of old sepia-coloured photographs: "El Paso May 4th. Here in El Paso we saw for the first time a street car water wagon. We saw the big smelter and the old adobe houses where the Mexicans lived. Between two and three thousand 'insurrectos' were camped just across the river. The hillsides sand gulches were lined with their camps which were very poor. Red Mexican blankets were seen all over the hillsides. Some of the men were bathing in the river; others were washing their clothes. They all seemed very poorly clad. .". Thousands of Mexicans flew to El Paso and the United States following the Mexican Revolution in 1910 which started with insurrection of several states in northern Mexico. It started the first large wave of Mexican immigration into the United States. "Detroit May 24th. . Visited Garhartts Glove and Overall Factory. Here we saw them cut fifty-four pair of overalls at one time with an electric cutter. The head cutter gets from $25 to $35 per week. Workers at the machines get $10 a week. They work by the piece. ." The journey finished back in San Francisco at 7:00 A.M. on June 6th. This is a rare and superb look at life communities all around the United States at one moment in time. Historians and geographers will find in it a goldmine of information and observations. Martin is a very good writer and a keen observer. This Journal can serve as an excellent benchmark for any number of comparisons whether historical geographic the Salton Sea for example economic or social. IRON MINNESOTA MN. Very Good. 1933. On offer is an outstanding archive of seven 7 original manuscript diaries one 1 autograph book 16 vacation photos from 1953 and other ephemera. The diaries were handwritten by Mary Elizabeth Kendall b. March 5th 1919 Iron Minnesota. Researchers and collectors of the area or of women's of gender studies of the era will find an interesting grouping with dates taking the reader from watching Mary evolve from a cowboy crazy kid to a University of Minnesota graduate to a middle aged family woman librarian hospital volunteer and basic salt of the earth American woman. From the outset we find she is such a charming and engaging young lady who details what life was like for a teen-age girl during the Great Depression. She loved her movies and movie actors and bought all the latest star magazines she loved reading westerns and considered herself somewhat of a cowgirl and listened to "Uncle Sam's Forest Rangers" radio show along with Hopalong Cassidy and Buck Rogers; she calls herself "Cowboy crazy." She belonged to the "Lone Wolf Tribe" and was always receiving different things in the mail from them. She owned a "Cutex Miniature Manicure Set" and an "Orphan Annie Shake-up mug" and couldn't wait until the new Sears Roebuck catalogue came out. She also collected cereal box tops grew "Depression Flowers" and entered all the latest contests. During her college years she receives a bachelor degree in science at the University of Minnesota. Most of the ephemeral items are from her college years. Here are snippets: 1933 "January 7th Went to town with mother this morning. Bought a notebook for pictures of movie stars. The "men of the family" sawed wood. Went to a movie called "The All American." It was neat. Richard Arlen was the hero and Gloria Stuart was the heroine." "February 19th Got 16 in the General Science test! The passing score was about 20!! There is one question in the test that we didn't mark yet so 16 isn't my real score. Took my makeup algebra test after school. Entered a contest by sending a limerick. Hope I win. Fed my goldfish." "March 5th Today is my birthday and I'm fourteen years old!!!!!!! Yesterday mother gave me a dollar for a present. I'm going to subscribe to a magazine. These are pretty hard times now. Yesterday the Virginia banks closed." "March 11th Went to town with mother and Boots. Went to the movie "Sherlock Holmes". It was great. It showed the time when Holmes killed professor Moriarty. Clive Brooke played the title role. I'm fixing over a silk dress that one of my aunts sent. All I do is raise the belt. Listened to the KMOX County Fair. I like Wyoming Jack best." "April 13th Easter vacation began today. I don't see how the vault can be so safe. Went to "The Kid from Spain" starring Eddie Cantor. Pretty good. Fed my goldfish." "June 16th Went up town with mother. Filled in some more entries for the hog naming contest. Bought the first ice cream cone I've had this year. Received my Buck Rogers book. It's great. Heard the last Buck Rogers program on the radio. Wish it wasn't the last. Fed my fish." "July 4th Someone stole 6 or 7 of our chickens last night or this morning. We think we know who did it. Went to the fourth of July picnic for the Farmer's Club. I was in Johnson's car. For lunch we had ice cream cake lemonade and sandwiches. Don bought a tube of toothpaste for me. I'm going to use it for that contest. Didn't add anything to my "Depression Flowers" today. There are some "flowers" on the bottom of the dish now. A California man whistled for us. He was wonderful. Miss Sheldon whistled with him." "October 10th Had an assembly. I got on the honor roll. My average was 93.9 Got our report cards at noon. Melba failed in two subjects. I got 90 on my essay on Honesty for Character Education. Full; 8. 1927 Autograph book full of handwritten signatures. BIO NOTES: Mary was born on March 5th 1919 to Hugh F. and Bessie Kendall. She had four older brothers; Hugh Donald Richard and John. Casual research informs that Mary's brother Richard became a geologist for the Standard Oil Company in California and later was sent to work in Africa. There are a few of his report cards in this lot but all of the diaries and other pieces of ephemera belonged to Mary. BOSTON CAMBRIDGE MASSACHUSETTS MASS. Very Good. 1928. On offer is a super manuscript relic of medical education at the Harvard Medical School in the 1930s. The notebooks 2 are compiled by Dr. Jacob J. Longacre M.D. 1907 - 1976 while a student. There are copious notes and hand drawn illustrations charts in the hand of a young man who would become a nationally renowned clef palate and facial surgery specialist who practiced in the Cincinnati Ohio area. BdM CAMP MOOSBURG GERMANY. Very Good. 1941. On offer is an original historically significant manuscript relic of Nazi Germany and Adolf Hitler's use and manipulation of German women being a 1941 and 1942 diary and journal of a Bund Deutsche Madel BdM League of German Girls or League of German Maidens in English at Camp Moosburg in southern Germany. The journal records nine 9 girls from July 10th to September 4th 1941 and ten 10 girls from July 12th to September 3rd 1942. Included in the group was the Jungmadel Fuhrer or Leader of the Jungmadel. In the earliest index of attendees they are marked as all from Coburg Germany a noted town several hundred kilometers to the north of Camp Moosburg. Almost all of the same girls return in 1942 with at least one new 'madel'. The book was obviously a cherished journal with many flourishes: calligraphic headings and poems photographs handmade shadow art some dry flora and drawings. The book appears hand made with three 3 text blocks bound with a canvas cloth over boards with leather tips on the front cover alone. 121 pages 6 X 8.5 inch. Overall VG. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND: 1. BdM Camps were critical to Hitler's rise to power. One online source quotes Kurt Gruber the director of the movement saying: the Hitler Youth "a new youth movement of young social-revolutionary minded Germans" trained to risk their own lives if necessary to free Germany from "the shackles of Capitalists and the enemies of the German race." Also known as 'The League of German Maidens' or 'League of German Girls' the BdM was the female branch of the Nazi party youth movement the Hitler Youth. It was the only female youth organization in Nazi Germany. Also: "BdM.a very heavy emphasis on competition. Just about every task no matter how big or small was turned into an individual team or unit competition. This included boys and girls sports the quality of singing during propaganda marches and Winter Aid collections. Boys and girls were kept constantly busy. The Nazis took advantage of the natural enthusiasm of young people their craving for action and desire for peer approval hoping ultimately each young person would come to regard his or her HJ or BDM unit as a home away from home or perhaps as their real home." 2. The League of German Girls or League of German Maidens was the female branch of the overall Nazi party youth movement the Hitler Youth. It was the only female youth organization in Nazi Germany besides the RAD camp girls and boys. At first the League consisted of two sections: the Jungmadel or Young Girls League for girls ages 10 to 14 and the League proper for girls ages 14 to 18. In 1938 a third section was introduced the Belief and Beauty Society Werk Glaube und Sch"nheit which was voluntary and open to girls between the ages of 17 and 21. Sport was an important section into the movement to educate girls within the National Socialist belief system and to train them for their roles in German society: perfect healthy wife mother and homemaker. Their Home Evenings revolved about domestic training but Saturdays involved strenuous outdoor training. Some of the girl's work even drew harsh criticism from Nazi party leaders such as Heinrich Himmler who felt that these activities were not befitting young girls. Himmler stated in a speech at Bad Toelz: "When I see these girls marching around with their nicely packed backpacks - it's enough to make me sick." The outbreak of war altered the role of the girls as soon as they turned 18. They helped the war effort in many ways. The older girls volunteered as nurses' aides at hospitals or to help at train stations where wounded soldiers or refugees needed a hand. Often the sports training and other activities of the League stayed. BOSTON MASSACHUSETTS MASS MA. Very Good. 1928. On offer is an absolutely super original 1928 diary handwritten by Amelia Maria Ely Howe who was the wife of noted Boston surgeon Dr. Walter C. Howe who would die in 1931. The diary offers up an amazing intimate look into the life of a prominent and wealthy family during the 1920s. This diary offers up some amazing historical reading including many high society events such as the theatre fancy dinners traveling and several social functions around Boston; most taking place at some of the prominent "hot spots" during the 1920s. She also talks about their annual trip to their summer cabin in Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia. Right before they leave for Canada their daughter Emily leaves on an ocean voyage to Europe before returning home for her "Debutante coming out party" which took place on November 16 1928. Emily eventually marries a surgeon by the name of George Aaron Marks. Frederick their son had Epilepsy because on several occasions Amelia mentions his "Attacks" or "Sickness" which sometimes last for an hour. There are also several newspaper clippings pasted inside an one photo of a man standing by a car with a long fur coat on. She also mentions on different occasions that her husband is working on writing a prescription book. Here are snippets: 1928 "January 13th To Ritz Carlton with Mary Guild and Mrs. Humphries to hear Louis Brownfield talk on "How Characters in Fiction are Born." Then to tea at Brittany Coffee Shop. Hew was graduated from Phillips Andover Academy from Amherst College class of 94 and Harvard medical School 98. He was a member of Alpha Delta Phi. He had been engaged in practice in Boston since 1902. In the World War he was a reserve medical officer. He was on the visiting surgical staff of the Boston City Hospital for fourteen years and for seven years on the staff of the Boston Dispensary. He married Miss Amelia Ely daughter of Judge Frederick D. Ely of Dedham in 1906. Dr. Howe was a member of the4 American College of Surgeons the American Medical Association Massachusetts Medical Society New England Surgical Society Boston Surgical Society Natural History Society and the Harvard Club." AROUND THE WORLD. Very Good. 1935. Full-Leather. On offer is the super beautifully printed diary specifically for the British Medical Association World Tour of 1935. This official diary was owned by Sir William Willcox as evidenced by the personal letters and other related ephemera in the book's pouch. The book contains the itinerary for every day of the tour with information and maps relating to places visited as well as all the travel and dining arrangements and travel tips given in detail. Space meant for the purpose and other blank spaces are used by the author many many pages of handwritten entries relating to the voyage the crew the other doctors and medical related observations and traded words of wisdom from other practitioners. Here are some biographical notes based on an online review of a biography of Sir William: The Detective-Physician: the Life and Work of Sir William Willcox by PHILIP H.A. WILLCOX London Heinemann Medical Books 1970 pp. xiv 332 illus. £3.50. In this book Dr. Philip Willcox has described the life and work of his father Sir William Willcox K.C.I.E. C.B. C.M.G. M.D. F.R.C.P. who was physician to St. Mary's Hospital from 1907 to 1935 and an expert forensic adviser to the Home Office from 1904 to 1941. It is much more than a work of filial piety. It describes a brilliant career she like of which is no longer to be seen in the modern world. As Dr. Willcox writesin his introduction: 'Here was the case of a man who without outside influence or financial support in his youth at first earned his living as a schoolmaster paid for his own medical education at St. Mary's Hospital at a time when there were no state sponsored scholarships qualified as a doctor became a Home Office pathologist and analyst consultant physician and lecturer in several subjects at his medical school.' Before the first world war Sir William Willcox gave evidence in twenty-five trialsfor murder or manslaughter including those of Crippen Steinie Morrison and Seddon. After the war he gave evidence in other famous trials and throughout the whole of these periods he was on the consultant staff of St. Mary's Hospital treating patients and teaching students and also running a large private practice in the West End of London. His retirement from the staff of St. Mary's was marked by a packed and emotional final ward-round about which the Dean the late Lord Moran wrote: 'What everybody thinks was shown by the turnout. I have never seen anything like it.'Sir William Willcox was born at Melton Mowbray in 1870 and throughout his life he indulged in the hobbies of a country squire: hunting hacking and shooting. In the sunset of his life I myself remember shooting with him when he was on a visit to my parents in Buckinghamshire. Sir William Wilcox first took a degree in chemistry and then taught chemistry for four years in a private school becoming a Fellow of the Institute of Chemistry. Clearly these years laid the foundation of his great knowledge of toxicology. He did not begin to study medicine until the age of twenty-five and he qualified with brilliant Honours in the London M.B. at the age of thirty. Soon Willcox joined the distinguished line of Home Office pathologists-Sir Thomas Stevenson Pepper Luff Webster-and in his turn he trained Spilsbury and Roche Lynch. It is interesting to record that all of Willcox's distinguished honours from the State were won on war service in World War I. He served with the Gallipoli expedition and in Mesopotamia where he made a great contribution to the recovery of the British Army from the early disasters of the campaign. Everyone who is immunised with TAB vaccine as I myself am each year should remember that this was pioneered by Willcox and Sir Robert Archibald. In 1918 General Sir Alfred Keogh the great Director-General of Army Medical Services in World War I who was honoured with the Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath a very singular honour for a medical man wrote to Willcox and cast his mind forward to the post-war period: 'To you and to me the great interest is of course the question of the national health its relation to national efficiency to housing to poverty and the relation of industrialism thereto. I have some-but not very stronghopes that the medical profession will come to realise that its part in these great questions is bigger than they have been in the habit of imagining. But we have to get away from the ideas that are so prevalent if not voiced that we are merely technical advisers and cannot like other professions produce leaders of men. I see little signthat "Public Health" is really recognised to be that which it is. All the talk is of sick benefit clubs halfcrowns for the practitioner and so on. The great things are forgotten.' Sir William Willcox was one of the first to be concerned about the problem of barbiturate addiction and in 1926 while engaged on this topic we find him writing: 'The BMA representatives are very obstinate and very difficult to deal with.' Plus Ca change plw c'est la meme chose. Sir William Wilcox lived in considerable style in Welbeck Street in the house where he had his private consulting rooms. He kept horses and rode every morning in Rotten Row. I remember a very senior general practitioner in the country just after World War II bemoaning the decline in standards of dress. He remarked that consultants now come to consultations in the country in small fast cars and wearing tweed jackets whereas Sir William Willcox used to be driven down from London by his chauffeur in a Rolls Royce car and wore a morning coat and top hat and 'the patients were very pleased to pay a guinea a mile for that'. Dr. Willcox has rightly eschewed any temptation to sensationalize the narrative of his father's great work in forensic medicine and in dealing with drug addiction. The facts stand on their own and the life and work of Sir William Willcox make fascinating reading. Unfortunately the book is somewhat marred by a considerable number of printing errors for example 'tetronal' is wrongly spelt on page 255 and Norman Kerr's name is wrongly spelt twice on page 284. What has happened to the proofreaders that all publishers used to employ But this small imperfection does not diminish the great interest of this biography and Dr. Willcox is to be warmly congratulated on it. Sebastopol Sonoma Redwood City California. Very Good. 1901. Interesting turn of the century California diaries penned by Reverend Charles C. Kirtland. 1901 1903 and 1908 are present and a careful reading provides many interesting insights into the Reverend and the religious politics of the west coast. In 1901 Mr. Kirtland has tipped in a small number of newspaper clippings detailing his surprise resignation at the beginning of June and he proudly asserts on September 8th - "My first Sunday as pastor of the Sonoma Church morning text 1 Cor 3:9 evening text Matt 25:16." Only a week later - "Morning text 2 Sam 3:28 This was a memorial service in memory of our late martyred president McKinley. The pulpit was tastefully draped in black and a large flag." He returns to Sebastopol the following week to aid in further Memorial services for the President. Other snippets: "The subject of our prayer meeting: What Can I do for My Pastor attendance 8." Pretty disappointing I'll bet as the annual Church meeting convenes with 57 people!. The Reverend while not writing every day rarely fails to mention his sermons and the text he reads. He is fond of missionary sermons. Refers to seeing Booker T. Washington at the Mechanic Pavilion: "He could not make himself heard in the rear of the building. He is undoubtably the greatest man of his race a practical leader of his people." "A social was given in the church parlors - in spite of rain about 80 attended. Music and a farce by way of entertainment after which the young people played games." "Mrs. Dr. Rich who gave birth to a son last night is very low and not expected to live. Tonight's report a little better." Sadly as so often the case in these pioneering times the son died a few months later but Mrs. Rich survivied. "Little Jennie Hewgett who has been sick for about 10 weeks died this morning. She was a sweet child. 10 years old a member of our Sunday School." "Began a new testament study of the religion of Jesus - only idea is begin with the study of his earliest writings." Mr. Kirtland was also a man used to using his hands and feet. The diaries discuss vacations; one climbing Mt. Shasta always fishing hiking and packing up horses with provisions to head for camp. There is also a fair bit of contact from other preachers and reverends inviting Kirtland to preach in their churches this leads to Kirtland writing others to cover his pulpit. This archive will be a treasure trove for area historians and genealogists - there are hundreds of local names mentioned as to births deaths and marriages. All meetings and visits have the participants named. Super detail. England Germany France. Very Good. 1822. On offer is a Georgian era travel journal/diary dated from June 20th 1822 to September 6th 1823. Our traveller while unidentified by the illegible signature the writer is undoubtedly the father or grandfather of famed musician and musical agent Robert Whyte from whose estate this book was apart of; and as the writer makes extensive notes and observations on this his 4th visit to Germany Paris and London in well over 80 pages his identity may yet be revealed or confirmed upon further research. Daily entries get easier as one gets used to the author's scrawl. Illness seems to have dogged our diarist alot on this trip. Besides the illegible name on the front that we can not make out along with the title "Journal Pt 4 My 3rd Journey to Germany in June 1822". Research will no doubt yield many many details from this determined writer. Overall the book 8.25 x 6.5 inches is in very good condition save for some light general signs of ageing to the boards with the pages being very good save for some edges being a little ragged. The spine is nice and tight. Würzburg Germany. Very Good. 1940. On offer is an extraordinary original manuscript German home front diary handwritten by the young daughter perhaps 18 or 19 of an officer who would soon become a Colonel-General and one of the Nazi elite. Research suggests that this man may have been Hermann Breith or Josef Harpe but local researchers will certainly have enough clues to be certain in the future. Collectors and historians will agree as to the utter uniqueness of this World War II home front diary. Beginning March 24th 1940 and ending on June 19th 1944 when the woman is drafted into a FLAK Anti-Aircraft unit. The book's upbeat floral pattern of the small square journal hardly belies the backdrop of the horrible War years and the suffering the likes of her father perpetrated. Entries range from the banal to the historic: March 17th 1942 she records: "Father is promoted to General Oberst". A later entry notes when her father is ordered to Hitler's Headquarters and many many more references to life within the 'military life'. Her last entry records being drafted into anti-aircraft service as increasingly elite layers of society were eventually stripped of their status and forced to participate in the War and many such women were near the end. She mentions dating a pilot wearing a Spanish Cross denoting service in the Luftwaffe. These people obviously lead a very elite life. Lots of political discussion and we read of the Nazis sending agents to give political classes and much more. It has entries for almost every day with 100 pages filled in front and back. Here are some snippets: "My Diary" from Easter 1940" March 24 1940 "Easter! Daddy is on vacation! Coffee with lots of Easter eggs. Purzi shot a duck. Laid in the lounge chair in the sun. In the afternoon we played board games. Dad showed pictures from the Front. In the evening we sat and chatted." May 10 "War has begun in Holland Belgium and Luxemburg. German troops marched into these countries. Germany will definitely win!" May 17 "Did train station service" - Provided soldiers with tea from 4:30 - 8 pm." May 21 "Train station service from 4 - 8 pm." May 29 "Went into the city and sent my soldier a package by field postal service." June 5 "Had to stay in bed. Big victory at Dünkirchen. Bells were ringing flags were waved. Dad was made general of the Panzers!" June 6 " Fever is gone but had to stay in bed anyway." June 7 "Was allowed out of bed but not quite feeling well yet." June 10 "Back to school today. Italy declared war on France today. Narvik Norway ultimately subdued by the Germans. A great victory day!" June 13 "2:30 - 9:30 Train station service Served coffee to 3 troop transports. The mountain hunters were very nice." June 14 "German troops have entered Paris! Got a letter from my soldier from the field." June 17 "France wants a ceasefire. Heard a special broadcast announcement in the city. Bought a birthday gift for Mom in the city." June 22 "Ceasefire signed" June 24 "Ceasefire signed by Italy in the evening. At 7:35 in the evening the German "Reichsregierung" learned of the armistice. 6 hours at later at 1:35 am there was a ceasefire. Experienced the solemn moment at night by the radio. Bells ringing "Now Thank We All Our God." June 25 "School holiday - went with my class to visit the wounded." July 1 "Last vacation day. It was a wonderful vacation. The war in Russia is proceeding very successfully." 12 Sept 1940 "Wrote to dad in the afternoon. Gila had night-shift and there met Oberleutnant Baumann Stukka-flyer with a golden Spanish cross EKI-I." Spanish crosses awarded to veterans of the Spanish Civil war from July 1936 - April 1939. Oct 28 "Air-raid alarm. Not in school because of a cold." Nov 13 "In the evening there was a very interesting presentation about the German colonists in Brazil with slides at the Academy." On March 31st she describes going to see an opera La Traviata - "fantastic music" and when they returned to the hotel suddenly her father was standing before them. He departed early in the morning on April 2nd. April 4 "Travel to the R.A.D. Arrived at 5 pm at the camp in Krautheim." April 5 "Sewed tags into clothing. The girls are very nice. Letters from Mom and Jochen." April 6 "Proclamation by the Führer. War with Yugoslavia has begun. Wrote to Mom. The first Sunday in the camp. Wrote to Dad." April 9 "5 important things during political schooling!

At night we returned to camp and had a beautiful supper served by the leaders feminine." April 5 "Got up at 5:50 again. As of today we will have 8 hours external duties. In the afternoon the section leader female from the district came for inspection. Big excitement in the camp! In the evening Mr. Greusch the examiner checked our blankets. A big trouble box! Received letters from Mom and Wilma." April 7 "Cleaned garden tools early. Listened to a newspaper report. Sang a lot of canons rounds. During the external duty in the afternoon the Colonel Field Master from and asked me how I like it. After I heard that Molotow in Russia is deposed. Wrote to Dad." May 13 "Hess landed in Scotland! Great excitement!" June 22 "A pity! Toiled in the kitchen the whole Sunday! Russia declared war against us. A difficult struggle is looming for us. Wrote Mom a letter. June 26 "Early 6:52 am departure for holidays. Wonderful! Arrived in W. Würzburg at lunch time. Evening with Gila Hellwig and Lieutenant Mark in Charlott. Very nice." July 2 "Back in camp. Assigned to garden duty. In the evening we played the grammophone. July 3 "In the evening a serenade by 10 soldiers. We all listened on the balcony." July 4 Big fight in the camp. Heavy duty lecture." February 19 1942 "Early in the morning the news came on the radio that Dad was honoured with the oakleaf by the Führer. Wrote immediately to Dad. Got a letter from Hilde B." February 21 "In the night a air-raid alarm. Cleaned the operating room until 1 am. During the alarm the doctor performed a c-section." March 3 "Dad became Colonel-General." April 1 She has returned home: "In the morning for the first time in a long time I slept in. Unpacked my suitcase. In the evening sat cozily and told of my adventures over red wine and cookies. Dad told about Russia. After three hours there was an air-raid alarm." Jan 30 1942 "The Führer spoke at 5 pm. The last time I worked in Susi's room. Wrote to Mom. Big Fight with Mrs. Doctor about the serving of dinner. Mr. Doctor has been drafted." July 1 1942 "Special announcement at 10 in the evening: Sevastopol has fallen. The strongest fortress in the world was defeated by our soldiers. Colonel General v. Manstein is promoted to General Field Marshal. Field-Marshal General" December 20 1942 "Dad arrived from Russia. Mom picked him up at the train station. Very joyful reunion." February 1 1942 "In the afternoon the rumour runs wild in the lecture hall that the "nurses aid exam will already be at the end of March! On offer is a handwritten manuscript 1897 diary whose unidentified author has overwritten the printed dates using the book for an extended trip in May 1897. The book is a maroon leather 3-1/2" x 5" flip book style with gilt edges. The diary begins with the handwritten date May 5th 1897. The writer a young man as evidenced by entries of shaving one morning and comments wherein he notes that he is unmarried and without children. details a cross-country trip by train from Buffalo NY to California and back again. The first entry reads: "Left Bfo 6 pm on ORC Special Shenandoah No looks like 55 or 5. Have ME Murphy for partner. Had supper between Dunkirk and Erie. Badges passed to all on board after we left Erie. A very nice party on train. Exchanging cards. Presented everyone on train with bouquets. Changed engines at Dunkirk. Erie & Cleveland. Retired 11:50 pm." Other interesting snippets: "Saw graves of 4 where stage was held up
killed three and then was killed; went bathing 3 of us inc one from Australia and from New Zealand; A total of 24 leaves providing 48 pages of entries with each page nearly completely filled. A very detailed account the author tells of card games descriptions of other passengers sightseeing notes dinner observations and much more. There is also a fair bit of 'California comparisons' in that the wirter spends a fair bit of time observing and commenting on the differences one sees in California and especially regarding the 'gals'. One entry where the author attends a fancy ball at a hotel he comments that it "was quite a jam with dresses the likes of which one has never seen." A very interesting travel journal from the perspective of a western New York man. 1967 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DAIRY OF ONE YOUNG MAN'S SERVICE AS AN ELECTRICIAN'S MATE ABOARD THE STORIED USS RICHARD B. ANDERSON IN VIETNAM
USS RICHARD B. ANDERSON VIETNAM MEKONG DELTA. Very Good. 1967. On offer is an interesting manuscript 1967 Vietnam War diary handwritten by an unknown Electrician's Mate while serving on the USS Richard B. Anderson from April 29th 1967 through to September 4th 1967. Intriguingly the next day's date is written but there are no further entries. The book over its 140 or so entries details life on a hard working ship from "routine" shipboard life as well as touching personal notes regarding his wife and birth of his son plus the horrors of war: he writes of a pilot who was shot down thirty miles south of Hanoi and how the VC quickly surrounded him and basically used him as "bait" as they knew rescue attempts would be made. Unfortunately the entire crew of Big Mother 67 was lost in an attempted rescue. The ship was involved with Search and Rescue SAR operations and had just refuelled the ill-fated chopper. FROM WIKIPEDIA: Richard B. Anderson earned four battle stars for service during the Korean War and eleven during tours off Vietnam. She was awarded the Secretary of the Navy's Meritorious Unit Commendation three times in addition to the Humanitarian Service Medal and her personnel earned the Combat Action Ribbon five times. 1900 - 1902 1916 - 1918 PAIR 2 OF DETAILED LOGBOOKS FROM THE LIFE OF COMMODORE HARRY PHELPS FIRST AS AN OFFICER ON THE USS CINCINNATI IN THE CARIBBEAN AND LATER AS A RETIRED CITIZEN LIVING A SIMPLE LIFE IN NORTH CAROLINA
ABOARD THE USS CINCINNATI SOUTHPORT N. CAROLINA 1900. On offer are two exceptional and detailed logbooks and journals from Harry Phelps a Lieutenant then Commodore in the United States Navy around the turn of the 20th century. The first book dates from 1900 and covers the period from October 1900 to November 1902. The second diary covers the period from 1916 to 1918 although the cover says 1906. The two diaries are filled to the brim with writing about his life career and day-to-day activities. His writing is very simple stating in a matter-of-fact way the details of his day. For example: Saturday October 13th 1900. We line out at half past seven have breakfast soon after eight and I go to the office by nine and am busy until noon when I go up to luncheon on my while. It is raining so I go back by the cars. I got to the carpenters shop to fix some shelving and work in the office from two to four when I walk home. I put up two shelves in our room and then shave and dress for dinner. After that I have a smoke and just before eight go with Ely to the National Theater to see Lord and Lady Algy which is very good in general. Home at half past eleven. I make some cocoa and we have supper and a smoke and turn in at half past twelve. At the time of the first book Phelps is living in Washington D.C. and working at the Judge Advocate Generals Office. He spends most days working there though he does not go into specifics of the work he is doing there. He is also quite fond of spending time on the weekends at a carpentry shop where he fixes clocks builds furniture and reads the paper. It seems to be his weekend get away. At the end of 1901 Phelps travels to New York to recommission the USS Cincinnati after extensive repairs were done on it at the New York Navy Yard. We go to the commandants and repast and I meet the clipper M. Jean.and go over to the C dock where the ship is then secured and go on board and at two-forty-five we put the Cincinnati in commission. I go up in the yard to get some instruments and things return by four and look up the dynamo rooms and some other things and at half past five go over to the Columbia. Each page consists of two long columns for the day however Phelps does not abide by the dates in the diary but instead crosses them out and writes the dates himself. In February the ship goes out to sea: I line out at quarter past seven reach the ship by eight have breakfast and then write until half past nine.after breakfast I read a bit and play cards until half past four when I get word we're going to sea so I get out the charts and instruments. At half past five I go shower by six have dinner and then sit and talk with my medic until eleven oclock when I turn in. From May 1902-January 1903 the USS Cincinnati protected American citizens and property in the Caribbean during political disturbances at Haiti Santo Domingo and Panama and brought relief supplies to Martinique after the devastating eruption of Mount Pelee. On the way down to the Caribbean the USS Cincinnati passes a ship carrying Prince Henry of Prussia: .shave and dress have chow and then go to quarters at nine and give a salute as the President passes with Prince Henry to the launch of the yacht. The event that Prince Henry is going to attend is the launching of Kaiser Wilhelm II's new yacht "Meteor III" christened by Miss Alice Roosevelt at Shooters Island in New York City. On the way down the Cincinnati stops at the Port of Charleston: I turn out at seven oclock and find Easter Sunday a beautiful day.have chow and at half past eight we get underway and start into the Port of Charleston with a pilot anchoring at ten oclock. I am busy until noon getting various papers up and cleaning away the electric plant up at which I finish after breakfast. He spends about a week and a half in Charleston doing various activities reading writing playing cards visiting with people he knows in the city etc. The ship makes stops in Haiti St. Vincent and the Grenadines St. Lucia Martinique Santo Domingo and Panama. In Martinique Phelps observes: We approach the island at Chateau Belair then we close around the north east and south coast to port. The whole northern part is completely devastated by the volcanic eruption towns and in fact the entire country being completely buried by the mud and ashes. After breakfast I have a smoke lie down until four fix up some notices to mariners and then go on deck. We are under way at five and stand out around the western side of the Island. I get a departure at six.I go up and change the course a bit and pilot the ship to an anchorage off Port Castries where we anchor at eleven oclock. By the middle of June 1902 the ship is patrolling off the coast of Venezuela and Curacao then it heads back towards the end of the year to patrol more of the Caribbean islands such as Haiti. The first journal ends in San Juan Puerto Rico on November 27th 1902. Though the cover of the 2nd book states 1906. next book starts on March 28 1916 in Southport North Carolina. Phelps is by this time retired from the Navy and his life is considerably more consistent. His days consist of reading the paper visiting his daughter playing cards with friends going to the movies working on his home and other rather normal activities of a retired older man. The days are still written in an almost identical style to the ones from 10 years before. A typical day reads similar to this: Monday April 10 1916. I turn out at eight oclock make fire and read a bit then put fibre seat in one of our chairs.by noon play some cards and at noon go for the mail and return for dinner read until half past three start pump on small latch and go to post office return and secure pump and talk until five.have supper.read a bit go to the movies with My Marnie stop by Jimis.read to half past eleven and turn in at twelve oclock. The book goes until October 22 1918. Phelps would die at the end of 1919 in an automobile accident. Both books are in good condition. The front cover from both of the books is detached. The 1902 book is missing its spine leather while the 1916 book has one with significant wear. The pages within both books are still in good condition showing only limited foxing or age-toning. The handwriting is legible and easily readable in black ink throughout both books only occasionally showing fading or bleeding through the other side. In the first possibly Phelps has written in the coordinates next to different dates that the USS Cincinnati was at sea. It provides some very interesting contexts to the words written during those days. Background: USS Cincinnati C-7 was a protected cruiser and the lead ship of the Cincinnati-class cruiser for the United States Navy. She was launched on 10 November 1892 by New York Navy Yard; sponsored by Miss S. Mosby; and commissioned on 16 June 1894 Captain Henry Glass in command. She was the second ship to be named after Cincinnati Ohio. From May 1902-January 1903 Cincinnati protected American citizens and property in the Caribbean during political disturbances at Haiti Santo Domingo and Panama and brought relief supplies to Martinique after the devastating eruption of Mount Pelee; Harry Phelps was an officer in the United States Navy and a member of the United States Naval Academy Class of 1880. The Harry Phelps Papers span Phelps' thirty-six year naval career covering from 1877 to 1913 and consist primarily of letters written by Phelps to his mother encompassing Phelps' time as a midshipman at the United States Naval Academy his work with various survey teams and his time at the Judge Advocate General office in Washington D.C.; From the Wilmington Morning Star: News has reached the city of the death in Norfolk of Commodore Harry Phelps well known here and in Southport. Commodore Phelps from what can be learned was killed in an automobile accident. His remains were sent to Oregon for interment'. We surmise Irene might be a Nafziger as she mentions Grandma Nafziger. There was a Henry Nafziger in Davenport during this time. Irene a clerk and a teacher rarely misses a day and relates the mundane day to day duties and chores but also she shares her feelings to her diary. The diary is in decent shape but is coming off the binding and has some staining. On offer is a superb original Depression era manuscript diary handwritten by an optimistic pious down-to-earth Southern California woman who entirely fills a 4-day at a glance diary. Of particular note to historians and researchers of the era besides the day to day workings of busy family and their struggle to work and live will be the political commentary she writes. Here is a sample: "It is appalling to see how many socialists and communists organizations there are in the US - how many ministers and college men are among them - how radical they are - how atheistic and blasphemous many of them are and how supine our Government is about it - rather how much the administration is doing to encourage communism and socialism. Surely we are close to a revolution - if not a bloody one - a real departure from our form of gov. Only God can save us." Far and away from a 'standard' diary the unidentified author proves to be a charming erudite All American woman with a keen eye and an awareness of the politics and events occurring in her beloved country during the Depression and pre Word War II United States of America. Siebert Library of the North American Indian Sales of 1999 had three works by Jones but not this one. <br/><br/>Kehkewaguonaby was a Mississauga Ojibwa Chief British father Ojibwa mother who converted to Wesleyan Methodism and was ordained a minister. These are the first journals kept by a Canadian native. He became the first native missionary to the Ojibwa and with his brother John was the first translator of books of the Bible into Ojibwa and Chippewa. He was also photographed in his native regalia circa 1844-46 - thus the earliest known photograph of a North American Indian. Sabin 36591. MGM / UA. Very Good. Octavo fine in white plastic case. <br/><br/>Jerry Maren was the Lollipop Kid part of the Lollipop Guild with the Munchkins in the film "The Wizard of Oz". A versatile performer he went on the perform as Little Oscar for the Oscar Mayer meat company and as Mayor McCheese and The Hamburglar for McDonalds Corp. He also had a walk-on in a "Seinfeld" episode. Maren was the last surviving cast member from the 1939 film. This photograph is boldly signed " Jerry / Maren / Lollipop / Kid " in black ink and undersigned by Marcella Krienzler who was married to Emil Kranzler one of the village Munchkins. Also signed by Mary Ellen St. Aubin co-owner of The Midget Club in Chicago with her Munchkin husband Parnell First Trumpeter Karl Slover; Townswoman/dancer Margaret Pellegrini and Anna Mrs. Frank Cucksey Mitchell Note: likely signed after Emil's death in 1993 at a convention at the OzCot in Chesterton Indiana.
