‎Japan. Very Good. 1941. On offer is a super original unique manuscript relic of WWII Japanese war effort being a handwritten diary of Japanese newsman for the period from December 8 Japan time 1941 to the spring and summer of 1942 noting the major events including Pearl Harbor Midway Guadalcanal the Eastern Solomon Islands the beginnings of New Guinea campaign naval engagements with the USS Saratoga Yorktown North Carolina and more. The entries seem to end around late summer of 1942 and there is an interesting postmark in the volume for December 8th 1942 one year after Pearl Harbor. Since this was written during wartime in order to conserve paper the writer used inverted pages from an old office ledger. ‎ANNAPOLIS MARYLAND MD USA. Very Good. 1933. On offer is a super charming original 1933 - 1936 manuscript diary handwritten by a young United States Navy midshipman. Only 20 years old at the beginning of his writings in this 5 year book the author Saverio Filippone born May 23rd 1913; died 2005 Class of 1937 will go on to serve his country with distinction as a submarine commander in World War II and then remarkably again serve in both Korea ad Vietnam. The diary will be of particular interest to collectors and historians of naval life and education and the men and women attracted to life serving in the Navy will find an interesting and unusual narrative here in many ways. The diary is sporadically used in 1933 very much so in 1934 and 1935 and then less so in 1936 and is comprised of mostly personal entries typical of a young man such as parties girls travelling and of course the many entries that have to do with his cruises and academy related activities and education making for a fascinating look at what life was like as a midshipmen in the 30's at the naval academy especially as we know that this young man becomes a commander of distinction in serving his country. Readers may also be surprised at the level of intimacy Saverio shares with his diary especially regarding some of the women he has relationships with; he is unusually candid and revealing of his emotions for many men. Intriguingly the gift inscription states: "Saverio Filippone from the only one xmas '33". The book has a vinyl front cover with a Victorian illustration the book lacks the locking clasp part but is otherwise VG. BIO NOTES: Events related to this officer: Submarine USS Tarpon 175 19 Jun 1944 USS Tarpon Lt.Cdr. S. Filippone leaves base for her 11th war patrol. She was ordered to perform lifeguard duty in the Truk area. 8 Aug 1944 USS Tarpon Lt.Cdr. S. Filippone ended her 11th war patrol when she returns to base. 31 Aug 1944 USS Tarpon Lt.Cdr. S. Filippone leaves base for her 12th and final war patrol. Once again she was assigned to lifeguard duty in the Truk area. 14 Oct 1944 USS Tarpon Lt.Cdr. S. Filippone ended her 12th and final war patrol at Pearl Harbor. Tarpon was now assigned to training duties on the U.S. east coast. ‎1877 ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN DIARY AND LEDGER AUTHORED BY L. C. MERRY A DAIRY FARMER FROM FRENCH CREEK A SMALL TOWN IN CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY OFFERING INSIGHT INTO DAILY LIFE ON HIS FARM AND INTO THE LIFE OF LOCAL COMMUNITY‎

‎FRENCH CREEK N.Y. Very Good. 1877. On offer is a super original diary handwritten by a young farmer from French Creek a small town in the state of New York on the border with Pennsylvania. Based on the information found in the diary and in "The Historical Journal of More Family" it is most probable that the diary was written by Lucius Carleton Merry 1846 -1909 who arrived in French Creek in 1850s when his father purchased a large dairy farm there. The diary covers the full year of 1877 an entry made for each day. As most farmers' diaries it contains weather records and lists farming operations including plowing wood cutting sugar tapping apple picking etc. Cheese making was a seasonal activity on May 2nd he wrote: "Make the first cheese today" They were selling cheese and butter in Corry New York or North East not always successfully. At the start of the year Merry wrote down account balance for 1876: "Have been to Corry today settled up the balance of the cheese account and sent 60$ to Jamestown making 542$ in all this year". In addition to regular farm operations county residents were required to do road work each year: "Work on the road have 181/2 days to work this year. One of the often operations in winter was wood cutting and drawing which was not always safe. Merry reports three accidents during the year when people were killed: "Hut Richardson was hurt today so that he died. He was drawing logs and was hit on the head by the binder. Charley Kennedy and I sat up with the corpse." In spite of hard labour and financial problems - several entries are about his father looking for money to buy cows - his diary makes an impression of a very positive sociable person and conveys strong sense of community. He mentions a lot of people neighbours and relatives attending church meetings parties. On April 18th a rare occasion when they had no visitors and did not go out he writes: "Have been at home all day it has been the most lonesome day that I have had in a long time". Church is an important part of his life that he often mentions in the diary: "Go to church and Sunday school have a sermon for the benefit of Freedmen. I think it was the blackest that I ever heard" probably meaning a sermon written by Alexander G. Cummins in 1865. At the end of the diary there is a ledger detailing monthly expenses and income. The diary contains many names of French Creek residents and of residents of nearby towns and mentions many local events including elections: "This afternoon have been to caucus had lots of fun. Pa goes to Corry tonight to get one set of tickets printed.The Republican ticket was all elected". The book has a brown leather cover with flap closure. Name and location written with a pencil on the endpaper. The book is titled "Exelsior Diary 1877". Condition: Very good. Pencil is slightly faded at some places but the text is clear. ‎Toronto Ontario Canada New York Europe. Very Good. 1938. On offer is a super "Compositions" notebook style travel journal handwritten by one of six young we estimate very early twenties Canadian men traveling from Toronto Canada by car to New York and then on to England by ship and finally the rest of Europe. All of the fellows are identified save for the author; Bob and Hugh MacMillan Art Boddingtion John MacFarlane and Don Nulands. Though not every day is filled in they misplaced the book for a couple of early weeks the writer amongst them commences writing when they leave Toronto on May 23 1938 and continues to write until they arrive back in September the same year. Our writer seems to be a fine young man with a droll sense of humor keen eye for details and is able to detail his trip with clarity while making for a great read. We learn that they are Alpha Delta Phi fraternity brothers sail across on the 'Paris' a boring ship even for those in First Class like these boys met a pleasant Nazi in Dresden and for the most part they make a very 'touristy' and detailed tour and use their Alpha Delta relationships to a large degree. Many times they tour with professors and doctors while covering it seems every inch of England Germany and much of Holland . Given the year one may wonder if this young man had to return to Europe as a soldier just a year or so later. Fascinating look at a tourist group immediately prior to the War. ‎BUCHAREST ROMANIA. Very Good. 1999. On offer is a recent diary written in 1999 of an American missionary’s trip to preach in Romania. The author is a Baptist from North Carolina and speaks Romanian fluently. The diary is written almost completely in English. It begins in November 17 1999: “Be ready. Some of this will be written in Romanian.My plane ride to Bucharest was a good one. When I arrived in Buc. at OJP. I had to wait 4 hours for my luggage. Ghita said someone would me me at OJP and take me to the train station. That was not the case. Eventually I made it to the station and waited 4 hours for my train most of which I spent outside in a large covered area. It was very cold - about -5° or 30°F and I was prepared for 22°C or 70°F per Ghita’s instructions. My train ride was overnight in a ‘sleeper’ car. It was the bumpiest ride of my life.” In Romania he soon begins travelling through the country preaching. “Last night we preached in a church in Varadia which is a village with a creek that is used as a road. The church as freezing b/c the deacon lit the fire 2 hours late. What an experience! For supper we had sausage and head cheese made from a fresh killed hog. This morning we preached in Carbonari.Tonight we will be at Stiepari to preach at a church w/ about 115 people. Tomorrow I will visit the high school and then be back in Timioara on Monday night.” In addition to writing about preaching to the Romanian people the author writes often of the food he eats and the kindness customs and eccentricities of the Romanian people.” He stays often with a woman named Maria who is the sister-in-law of a friend back home: “I am not sure that Maria is a Christian. This makes things tough to deal with at times. The other night I wanted to sue the phone which I said I had a phone card and she began telling me that I was supposed to give her money for staying there electricity food etc. Well this is right for me to give her money but not for her to demand it.I would rather her give her house for and expect nothing. This way the money I give is a gift - a ‘thank you’ for allowing me to stay in the home.Do for others expecting nothing in Return. When you get something act as if it was not expected - Do things from the heart not out of personal gain.” He also writes of the upcoming millennium and that “it will be interesting to see what Y2K brings. Y2K experts have listed Romania as one of the countries they think will suffer the most.” He also watches a game between an American team Crossfire “a sports ministream team based in Asheville NC” and a team from Timioara. “I was able to sit w/ two Mormon friends I met one in Bucharest. I have been praying for the HS to work on his heart and show him the light. This is a good time for that - he has heard Crossfire present the gospel 2x and he is homesick.” He also quotes some bible verses at length and does some time interpreting what he believes they mean. Most days he spends preaching at churches or joining Romanian Christian youth groups for bible study. On one of his last days in Romania he gets into a conflict with some locals who scam him out of some money: “The conductor of my car said I needed to pay for the extra luggage. I refused b/c I already bought 2 tickets which makes my cabin 1st class by myself. He wasn’t going to let me on but than he did BTW: all this time I am praying. Then the smecher con-man said I need to either purchase an extra baggage billet or buy him or his friends 3 of them a beer. I didn’t buy them but gave the money so I wouldn't have any trouble. This is a part of Romania I despise. He spends the last few pages reflecting on his trip in Romania and quoting and interpreting the bible. This young man really pours his heart out for his love of God and the importance of his religious message. The book is a total of 108 handwritten pages out of a 160-page or so book. The diary is written in a “Sainsbury Reporters Notebook”. The pages turn from top to bottom not left to right. The size is roughly 8” x 5 inches. The pages are in good condition and all still attached to the ring binding. No wear or tear or discoloration. One or two pages are folded up and can be easily unfolded. The handwriting is clean and legible throughout in blue and black ink. ‎1911 SENSATIONAL SIGNIFICANT ORIGINAL TYPED MANUSCRIPT LOG BOOK DETAILING THE CALIFORNIA CONDUCTOR'S EXCURSION: A SUPERB UNIQUE PIECE OF AMERICAN RAILROADIANA BY AND FOR ULTIMATE TRAIN TRAVEL ENTHUSIASTS‎

‎NEW ORLEANS WASHINGTON DC NEW YORK USA. Very Good. 1911. On offer is a rare and absolutely outstanding train log detailing a nearly 10000 mile journey around the United States. The log book measures 11 inches by 8 inches and contains 60 typewritten pages. The heavy paper cover has a small tear but otherwise the journal is in excellent condition. E.M. Martin is the author of the California Conductor's Excursion or A Trip of 9800 Miles. The journal was written immediately following this 1911 odyssey. In 1911 between May 2nd and June 6th 110 railroad conductors from California boarded a California Conductors Special and embarked on an epic journey around the United States. The conductors were travelling with their wives and were members of El Capitan division No 115 of the Order of Railway Conductors ORC a labour union representing train conductors in the United States their destination was ORC National Convention held in Jacksonville in May 1911. In that month they would pass through 27 states and 2 foreign countries covering some 9800 miles. The Special consisted of an Observation Car a Dining Car 4 Sleeping Cars and 1 Baggage Car. Altogether they would travel on tracks owned by 17 different railroad companies. Some of the entries are quite terse: "Los Angeles May 6 Arrived here 7:30 A.M. and made a 25 min stop. Seven of us took an automobile ride through the principal parts of the city." Other entries are much more extensive such those for New Orleans Washington D.C. and New York City. "New Orleans May 6 Arrived here 8:30 A.M. . A crowd of us hired a sightseeing auto and saw the principal points of interest. The longest street also the principal street is called Canal St. It is four miles long. The highest part of the city is three feet below the level of the sea. We saw the Post Office building the cornerstone of which Henry Clay laid Liberty Monument and the Old St. Louis Hotel. . Don Pedro Emperor of Brazil was once its guest. Henry Clay was banqueted here on one occasion at a cost of $20000. Ex President McKinley was banqueted here on his first visit to New Orleans while Governor or Ohio. . While the Hotel was used as the State Capital Gen Phil Sheridan during the troublesome period of reconstruction drove out the Legislature in session at the point of the bayonet. ."; "Washington May 11 . we had no time to lose as the reception at the White House was from five to six. From the reception hall we were ushered out upon the lawn in single file in the President's private grounds where we were presented to the President and Mrs. Taft who stood upon the lawn waiting to welcome us. One of the guards served Mrs. Taft and she drank with us. . After luncheon the waiters passed cigars to the men . While being served the President sat upon a lawn seat talking ." He describes in detail the rooms they visited in the White House as well as other places of interest in the city. They spent several days in New York City and toured extensively. Martin has a sharp eye for detail as this example illustrates: ". One of the main parlours is trimmed in dark Spanish Oak with tapestry panels. The ceiling is decorated with beautiful paintings. In the Louis XVI Dining Room the wainscoting and pilasters are of Circassian walnut enclosing panels of golden silk tapestry." His descriptions in many cases conjure up images of old sepia-coloured photographs: "El Paso May 4th. Here in El Paso we saw for the first time a street car water wagon. We saw the big smelter and the old adobe houses where the Mexicans lived. Between two and three thousand 'insurrectos' were camped just across the river. The hillsides sand gulches were lined with their camps which were very poor. Red Mexican blankets were seen all over the hillsides. Some of the men were bathing in the river; others were washing their clothes. They all seemed very poorly clad. .". Thousands of Mexicans flew to El Paso and the United States following the Mexican Revolution in 1910 which started with insurrection of several states in northern Mexico. It started the first large wave of Mexican immigration into the United States. "Detroit May 24th. . Visited Garhartts Glove and Overall Factory. Here we saw them cut fifty-four pair of overalls at one time with an electric cutter. The head cutter gets from $25 to $35 per week. Workers at the machines get $10 a week. They work by the piece. ." The journey finished back in San Francisco at 7:00 A.M. on June 6th. This is a rare and superb look at life communities all around the United States at one moment in time. Historians and geographers will find in it a goldmine of information and observations. Martin is a very good writer and a keen observer. This Journal can serve as an excellent benchmark for any number of comparisons whether historical geographic the Salton Sea for example economic or social. ‎BOSTON MASSACHUSETTS MASS MA. Very Good. 1928. On offer is an absolutely super original 1928 diary handwritten by Amelia Maria Ely Howe who was the wife of noted Boston surgeon Dr. Walter C. Howe who would die in 1931. The diary offers up an amazing intimate look into the life of a prominent and wealthy family during the 1920s. This diary offers up some amazing historical reading including many high society events such as the theatre fancy dinners traveling and several social functions around Boston; most taking place at some of the prominent "hot spots" during the 1920s. She also talks about their annual trip to their summer cabin in Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia. Right before they leave for Canada their daughter Emily leaves on an ocean voyage to Europe before returning home for her "Debutante coming out party" which took place on November 16 1928. Emily eventually marries a surgeon by the name of George Aaron Marks. Frederick their son had Epilepsy because on several occasions Amelia mentions his "Attacks" or "Sickness" which sometimes last for an hour. There are also several newspaper clippings pasted inside an one photo of a man standing by a car with a long fur coat on. She also mentions on different occasions that her husband is working on writing a prescription book. Here are snippets: 1928 "January 13th To Ritz Carlton with Mary Guild and Mrs. Humphries to hear Louis Brownfield talk on "How Characters in Fiction are Born." Then to tea at Brittany Coffee Shop. Found Cliff Bragdon here when I got home. He got Joe and brought her back to dinner. E. Dinning at State Door with Pill Jimmie Cosgrove and Dorothy Buchard. Then to Staller to dance. W. Cliff Joe and I to Copley Theatre to see "Clean Hands." "February 4th Packing & sewing. Pill to lunch. Train for Springfield with E. Jo and Isabella Grandin arrived Springfield. Met by Wallace Backus Cliff & Jim Haig. Drove to Amherst. Lord Jeffery Inn. Rooms 26 and 27. Isabella in 107. Had tea in our rooms and dressed for dance. Dinner and dance in College hall. Another newspaper clipping on November 3rd reads: "Invitations have gone out from Dr. And Mrs. Walter Clarke Howe of 303 Beacon Street for a tea which they are to give on Friday Nov. 16 at the Algonquin Club in honor of their daughter Miss Emily Howe one of this season's debutantes. The hours are from four until seven and there will be dancing." "November 16th Emily's coming out tea at the Algonquin Club 4-7 a great success. Gerturde Harry and "Winks" Williston and Dr. And Mrs. Hoye came back here for cocktails and stayed to supper. Emily to dinner at Laura's and then to Cora Lefman's dance." "December 31st Gertrude and Mrs. Burrell here playing bridge with F. And me. Mrs. Burrell took the prize; a pack of cards. Had frozen fruit salad sandwiches choc. Cake and coffee. August 21st 1931 Dr. Walter Clarke Howe noted surgeon died suddenly tonight. He was born at Dedham fifty nine years ago son of Elijah and Julia Ann Hunt Howe. His family was of Colonial ancestry. Hew was graduated from Phillips Andover Academy from Amherst College class of 94 and Harvard medical School 98. He was a member of Alpha Delta Phi. He had been engaged in practice in Boston since 1902. In the World War he was a reserve medical officer. He was on the visiting surgical staff of the Boston City Hospital for fourteen years and for seven years on the staff of the Boston Dispensary. He married Miss Amelia Ely daughter of Judge Frederick D. Ely of Dedham in 1906. Dr. Howe was a member of the4 American College of Surgeons the American Medical Association Massachusetts Medical Society New England Surgical Society Boston Surgical Society Natural History Society and the Harvard Club." The diary is a good size measuring about 5" x 7 ½" and there is a stain on the outside spine and a small portion of the front cover but the pages are not affected and look great.
